Abstract:Special microstructure enables auxetic properties and enhanced strength for metamaterials. Therefore, in this study, a novel elliptical anti-chiral auxetic (EAA) structure is constructed by substituting elliptical walls for the oblique walls of the criss-cross anti-chiral auxetic (CAA) structure. The EAA structure's in-plane quasi-static compression behavior is examined using theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, which is validated by the quasi-static compression test. According to the modeling and experimental data, the EAA structure will deform in stages that include approaching, flattening, and collapsing, corresponding to the two-plateau stresses and densification stages of the stress-strain curve. Theoretical prediction formulas of the two plateau stresses of the EAA structure are deduced and optimized. The modified theoretical, numerical, and experimental results show good agreements. Furthermore, geometry also has a significant impact on auxetic characteristics and two-plateau stresses. The increased two-plateau stresses and decreased auxetic effect both result from the lower semi-axis length ratio. Moreover, the introduction of the elliptical arc-shaped cell wall improves the deformation symmetry, leading to second plateau stress of the EAA structure that is 82.8% greater than the CAA structure at an effective strain of 0.45.
