Abstract:Nitrogen (N) transformations could be complicated during swine wastewater (SWW) storage. This study aimed to characterise the soluble organic N (SON) and investigate N transformations during SWW storage. Amide compounds were identified as a component of SON in SWW. It was found that the SON including urea increased significantly with the storage time, and 202.6 mg/L of SON increased in the stored SWW after 180 d of storage. The water DNA content increased significantly with the storage time, indicating that the microbes kept growing during SWW storage. Only a few species belonging to the denitrifiers, ammonia-oxidisers, and methane-producers (such as Thauera sp., Anaerovorax sp ., Nitrosomonas sp., and Paenibacillus sp. ) exhibited high abundances in the anaerobic ammonia-rich SWW, and an evident shift in the bacterial community was detected during SWW storage. The gene profile revealed that the activities of ammonia assimilation, amino transfer, amino acid transport, and carbamoyl phosphate synthesis were consistently high or moderate in the SWW throughout storage, which could explain the transformation of NH 4 -N into organic N. Accumulation of SON during storage could significantly affect soil properties and crop growth as SWW is applied as manure or irrigation water.
