Abstract:Ultrafast optical switch based on plasmonic nanostructures has large application potentials in optical logic circuits and optical communication systems. Integration of plasmonic optical switching devices with optical fibers is a breakthrough for realizing practical applications in long-range optical data transmission or communication techniques. Here, the incorporation of plasmonic optical switch devices onto the end facets of optical fibers is reported, so that the switched optical signals are generated by interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and plasmonic nanostructures on one end of the fiber, and are delivered via the fiber waveguide to the other end for detection or decoding. "Quenching" of localized surface plasmon in the gold nanowires by its interaction with band-edge modulation in gold through strong optical excitation is the responsible photophysics. This work accomplishes for the first time the implementation of ultrafast plasmonic optical switch device on optical fiber tips for logic data transmission.

Abstract:Plasmonic structures possess rich physics related to the sensitivity of plasmon resonance to the change in the environmental dielectric constant, the enhanced light scattering and optical extinction, and the local field enhancement enabled strong light-matter interactions, which have been applied in refractive-index sensors, optical feedback in various micro- or nano-cavity lasers, surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy, and high-sensitivity molecular detection. However, ultrafast optical response is another important aspect of plasmons, which can be utilized to achieve switching of optical signals in different spectral bands. These optical switching designs are very important for applications in optical logic circuits and optical communication system. In this review, we summarize a series of reports on ultrafast plasmonic optical switches, where we focus our discussions on the structural and device designs, instead of on their physics. By categorizing the designs of optical switches into different groups by their featured performances, we intend to propose the development trend and the commonly interested mechanisms of such ultrafast optical switches. We hope this review will supply helpful concepts and technical approaches for further development and new applications of ultrafast optical switching devices.

Abstract:We report a demonstration of an ultrafast all-optical switching with unique light control effects. The all-optical switching consists of a gold film with asymmetric split rings and a silica substrate. The device effectively controls the transmission and absorption of continuous pulses in the communication band (1200-1800 nm) and short pulses with a pulse duration of 80 fs by using the interaction of two coherent beams on nano-metamaterials with a thickness of only 50 nm. The metamaterial can achieve more than 90 % output control under continuous light irradiation. When the pulse duration is 80 fs, the switching contrast ratio is greater than 3 : 1 and the modulation bandwidth is greater than 12.5 THz. Switching time can be on the order of femtosecond. This paper provides a new structure for ultra-high speed optical data processing components in coherent networks.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are widely used in photonics because of their profound electro-optic properties. However, the slow switching speeds (milliseconds) and the fluid nature of liquid crystals restrict their potential use in integrated photonics. In this work, polymer-stabilized liquid crystals are utilized as the functional material to improve the response time with a polymer network that helps pre-orientate the liquid crystal. Additionally, plasmonic slot structures are simultaneously employed to minimize the switch voltage by confining the optical field within the electrode spacing at subwavelength scales. Thanks to the large overlap of the optical and electric fields, the scattering states of the polymer-stabilized liquid crystal can be effectively manipulated to modulate the loss of the propagating wave, resulting in strong optical attenuation in the integrated photonic platform. Specifically, a plasmonic enhanced polymer-stabilized liquid crystal photonic device for operation at 1550 nm, which has a length of only 10 mu m and shows an extinction ratio of 0.38 dB mu m-1, with a power consumption of less than 6 mu W and a response time approximate to 20 mu s, resulting in a figure-of-merit of 0.012 mW. A scheme of on-chip integrated optical attenuators for plasmonic slot waveguide-enhanced electro-optical properties of polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film is proposed. This prototype reduces the response time and improves the modulation efficiency of the liquid crystal-based integrated photonic device, resulting in a compact and energy-efficient platform for on-chip optical modulation. image

Abstract:We report a picosecond and low-power all-optical switch with multiple operating wavelengths in integrated photonic circuits, on-chip-triggered by a control light. The sample configuration combines the advantages of plasmonics and photonics, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures used as core units interconnected by ultralow-loss dielectric slot waveguides. A large nonlinearity enhancement is obtained based on resonant excitation, local field effect, and field enhancement effect, while fast response is maintained by intermolecular energy transfer. A fast response of 63 ps and ultralow control light intensity of 450 kW/cm(2) are achieved.

Abstract:Ultrafast all-optical switching in metals can be an efficient way for high-speed active photonic devices. However, with the improvement in modulation speed, typically by reducing the optical switching pulse width from picoseconds to femtoseconds, the nonlinear optical response of the metal will decrease significantly, which hinders the realization of the sufficient modulation depth at femtosecond optical control. Here, by combining two optical nonlinear enhancement effects of surface plasmon polaritons, including their extreme sensitivity to refractive index change and their capability to induce strong localized optical fields, we have achieved an ∼50-times enhancement in the modulation depth simultaneously with a switching time of ∼75-fs. Such enhancement was found to be independent of the control intensity, which sets a basis for the future application of femtosecond switching at a minimum power.

Abstract:Ultra-small all-optical switches are of importance in highly integrated optical communication and computing networks. However, the weak nonlinear light-matter interactions in natural materials present an enormous challenge to realize efficiently switching for the ultra-short interaction lengths. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a submicron bidirectional all-optical plasmonic switch with an asymmetric T-shape single slit. Sharp asymmetric spectra as well as significant field enhancements (about 18 times that in the conventional slit case) occur in the symmetry-breaking structure. Consequently, both of the surface plasmon polaritons propagating in the opposite directions on the metal surface are all-optically controlled inversely at the same time with the on/off switching ratios of >6 dB for the device lateral dimension of <1 μm. Moreover, in such a submicron structure, the coupling of free-space light and the on-chip bidirectional switching are integrated together. This submicron bidirectional all-optical switch may find important applications in the highly integrated plasmonic circuits.

Abstract:VO2 has been widely used in optical modulation devices due to its large change in permittivity across its first-order metal–semiconductor phase transition. People have proved that VO2’s phase transition can be driven by plasmonic hot-electron injection, providing a new approach to realizing ultrafast all-optical devices with a low pump fluence. Here, we report on ultrafast VO2 all-optical modulation with a dramatically low pump fluence utilizing the composite structure of a self-supported VO2 film on a gold nanoshell grating. Plasmonic hot electrons in the gold excited by femtosecond pulses are injected into the VO2 film and trigger its phase transition, reducing the pump fluence threshold for the structural transformation to only 147.8 μJ/cm2. With a pump fluence above this threshold, ultrafast phase transition can be triggered within 1 ps, and a high modulation depth of 50% can be achieved. Moreover, an ultrafast modulation with an on–off time of 650 fs can also be achieved using a pump fluence below the threshold. This work may explore new applications of plasmonic hot-electron-driven phase transition in optical modulation devices and configurable devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) are often regarded as the collective oscillations of charge carriers localized at the dielectric-metal interface that display an ultrafast response upon light excitation. The recent developments in the fabrication and characterization of plasmonic nanostructures have stimulated continuous effects in the search for their potential applications in the photonic fields. Concentrating on the role of plasmonics in photonics, this review covers recent advances in ultrafast plasmonic materials with prime focus on all-optical switching. Fundamental phenomena of plasmonic light-matter interaction and plasmon dynamics are discussed by elaborating on the ultrafast processes unraveled by both experimental and theoretical methods, along with a comprehensive illustration of leveraging ultrafast plasmonics all-optical switching and pulse laser generation with a focus on device design and performance. This review is concluded with a brief highlight of the current progress and the potential future directions ultrafast plasmonics.

Abstract:All-optical switches have attracted attention because they can potentially overcome the speed limitation of electric switches. However, ultrafast, energy-efficient all-optical switches have been challenging to realize due to the intrinsically small optical nonlinearity in existing materials. As a solution, we propose graphene-loaded deep-subwavelength plasmonic waveguides (30 nm x 20 nm). Thanks to extreme light confinement, we have significantly enhanced optical nonlinear absorption in graphene, and achieved ultrafast all-optical switching with a switching energy of 35 fJ and a switching time of 260 fs. The switching energy is four orders of magnitudes smaller than that in previous graphene-based devices and is the smallest value ever reported for any all-optical switch operating at a few picoseconds or less. This device can be efficiently connected to conventional Si waveguides and employed in Si photonic integrated circuits. We believe that this graphene-based device will pave the way towards on-chip ultrafast and energy-efficient photonic processing.

High-contrast and Fast Electrochromic Switching Enabled by Plasmonics

Abstract:With vibrant colours and simple, room-temperature processing methods, electrochromic polymers have attracted attention as active materials for flexible, low-power-consuming devices. However, slow switching speeds in devices realized to date, as well as the complexity of having to combine several distinct polymers to achieve a full-colour gamut, have limited electrochromic materials to niche applications. Here we achieve fast, high-contrast electrochromic switching by significantly enhancing the interaction of light-propagating as deep-subwavelength-confined surface plasmon polaritons through arrays of metallic nanoslits, with an electrochromic polymer-present as an ultra-thin coating on the slit sidewalls. The switchable configuration retains the short temporal charge-diffusion characteristics of thin electrochromic films, while maintaining the high optical contrast associated with thicker electrochromic coatings. We further demonstrate that by controlling the pitch of the nanoslit arrays, it is possible to achieve a full-colour response with high contrast and fast switching speeds, while relying on just one electrochromic polymer.

Abstract:The pursuit of high-speed and on-chip optical communication systems has promoted extensive exploration of all-optical control of light-matter interactions via nonlinear optical processes. Here, we have numerically investigated the ultrafast dynamic switching of optical response using tunable hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) which consists of five pairs of alternating layers of indium tin oxide (ITO) and SiO2. The nonlinearity of the HMM is analyzed by the ultrafast dynamics of the hot electrons in the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) ITO. Our approach allows large and broad all-optical modulation of the effective permittivity and topology of the HMM on the femtosecond time-scale. Based on the proposed HMM platform, we have shown considerable tunability in the extinction ratio and Purcell enhancement under various pump fluence. In addition, we have achieved all-optical control of the coupling strength through depositing plasmonic resonators on the HMM platform. A significant tuning of the coupled resonance is observed by changing pump fluence, which leads to a switching time within 213 fs at a specific wavelength with a relative modulation depth more than 15 dB. Ultrafast Dynamics of Strong Near‐Field Coupled Localized and Delocalized Surface Plasmons

Abstract:Transient dynamics of strongly coupled plasmons in a multilayer metal nanostructure are investigated using pump–probe spectroscopy. Particle plasmon has strong near‐field coupling with film plasmons to produce dipolar and high‐order hybrid modes. The high‐order mode decays more slowly than the dipole one but shows a similar redshift behavior under on‐ and off‐resonance excitation, which can be exploited for ultrafast and ultrahigh‐efficient optical switching. This paper reports transient dynamics of strong near‐field coupling behavior of plasmons in a multilayer metal nanostructure that enables ultrahigh‐efficient optical switching. Particle plasmon on the top array units couples with localized/delocalized plasmons on the bottom Au film to produce dipolar and high‐order hybrid modes with nearly suppressed reflection. The mode coupling can be tuned from near‐field to far‐field regime readily mediated by the spacer thickness. The dipolar mode inherits the high dispersive property of the delocalized plasmon, but the higher‐order one shows limited dispersion. Transient spectroscopy illustrates both hybrid modes have a picosecond timescale redshift under on‐ and off‐resonance excitation. However, the higher‐order mode exhibits a longer decay lifetime than the dipolar one because of resonance characteristics and cavity properties. An ultrafast optical switching effect with a response time of τ = 3.2 ps and an ultrahigh efficiency of 5100 mOD mJ−1 cm2 is achieved under an extremely low pump fluence.

Abstract:On-chip-triggered all-optical switching is a key component of ultrahigh-speed and ultrawide-band information processing chips. This switching technique, the operating states of which are triggered by a remote control light, paves the way for the realization of cascaded and complicated logic processing circuits and quantum solid chips. Here, a strategy is reported to realize on-chip remotely-triggered, ultralow-power, ultrafast, and nanoscale all-optical switching with high switching efficiency in integrated photonic circuits. It is based on control-light induced dynamic modulation of the coupling properties of two remotely-coupled silicon photonic crystal nanocavities, and extremely large optical nonlinearity enhancement associated with epsilon-near-zero multi-component nanocomposite achieved through dispersion engineering. Compared with previous reports of on-chip direct-triggered all-optical switching, the threshold control intensity, 560 kW/cm(2), is reduced by four orders of magnitude, while maintaining ultrafast switching time of 15 ps. This not only provides a strategy to construct photonic materials with ultrafast and large third-order nonlinearity, but also offers an on-chip platform for the fundamental study of nonlinear optics.
Optically implemented deep terahertz switch based on perovskite film and electromagnetically induced transparency metasurface

Abstract:Switches employing optically controlled dynamic tunable metasurface are crucial for the development of next-generation universal integrated terahertz components and systems. A deep switch that combines the nonlinear absorption properties of perovskite films with a novel dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonant metasurface is proposed. Our experimental results demonstrated that the terahertz (THz) switch achieved an excellent transmittance modulation depth as large as 95.66 %. In addition, it blocked 97.15 % of the incident waves in the 0.9 THz bandwidth in the off state, and it exhibited a transmittance of 69.6 % at 0.60 THz in the on state. Moreover, the dual harmonic oscillator model, near-field and current distributions showed that deep modulation of the active dual EIT switch was primarily caused by suppression of the bright-mode of the split ring resonators. This study offers valuable insights into the development of ultrafast THz switches, THz communication, and intelligent metasurfaces.

Ultrafast Surface Plasmonic Switch in Non-Plasmonic Metals

Abstract:We demonstrate that ultrafast carrier excitation can drastically affect electronic structures and induce brief surface plasmonic response in non-plasmonic metals, potentially creating a plasmonic switch. Using first-principles molecular dynamics and Kubo-Greenwood formalism for laser-excited tungsten we show that carrier heating mobilizes d electrons into collective inter and intraband transitions leading to a sign flip in the imaginary optical conductivity, activating plasmonic properties for the initial non-plasmonic phase. The drive for the optical evolution can be visualized as an increasingly damped quasi-resonance at visible frequencies for pumping carriers across a chemical potential located in a d-band pseudo-gap with energy-dependent degree of occupation. The subsequent evolution of optical indices for the excited material is confirmed by time-resolved ultrafast ellipsometry. The large optical tunability extends the existence spectral domain of surface plasmons in ranges typically claimed in laser self-organized nanostructuring. Non-equilibrium heating is thus a strong factor for engineering optical control of evanescent excitation waves, particularly important in laser nanostructuring strategies.
