Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CRR) presents a promising approach to convert greenhouse gases into high-value chemicals but faces the challenges of high overpotential, low selectivity, and sluggish kinetics. Herein, a typical electrochemically active bacterium, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, is directly pyrolyzed to prepare a phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped carbon catalyst with iron-nitrogen sites (P-Fe/NC) for CO2 to CO. The optimized catalyst exhibits a superior CRR performance with a CO Faradaic efficiency of 94% at 320 mV overpotential. A Tafel slope of 95 mV dec-1 and remarkable stability have been achieved. The kinetic isotope effect measurements and experimental analysis reveal that the introduction of P atoms accelerates the water dissociation and assists in the proton transfer to Fe-N4 centers for the subsequent intermediate protonation process, thus promoting the CRR kinetics. Further, a Zn-CO2 battery with P-Fe/NC-1000 cathode provides a maximum power density of 1.32 mW cm-2 and long-term durability for 30 h.
