Abstract:The rapid development of wireless technology plays extremely important roles in monitoring and control related applications nowadays. This special issue aims at bringing together state-of-the-art contributions of wireless monitoring, control, actuator coordination as well as their co-designs. It is shown in this proposal that there are a number of potential contributors, as well as reviewers, with original research results to this special issue, and the guest editors are capable of managing the special issue. In recent years, the demand for wireless communications in many monitoring and control applications has grown tremendously, such as military, aerospace, industrial, commercial, environmental, and health monitoring, etc. Some new technologies like Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Mobile Robots, and Bluetooth have already made significant contribution to data acquisition. At the same time, there arise some new challenges to guarantee a highly reliable, accurate and fault-tolerant process. It is a critical issue to develop innovative approaches to deal with multi-variable, multi-space problem domains (detection, identification, tracking, data fusion, energy-efficiency, and fault-tolerant framework) as well as practical implementation in wireless monitoring and control application. Emerging wireless technology for monitoring and control, data fusion in monitoring and control, cooperative signal and information processing in wireless monitoring and control, fault (Event)-detection, identification and tracking, network coverage algorithm for wireless monitoring, power and topology control in wireless networks, closed-loop framework for wireless monitoring and control, protocols for wireless monitoring, coordination and control, integration of monitoring and control for wireless networks, controller design for wireless monitoring network based system, developments and novel applications for wireless monitoring and control, mobile Robots for monitoring and control, etc. There were 80 paper submissions to this special issue. The submissions covered the various aspects of wireless monitoring and control. Unfortunately, due to limited space and volume, only 16 papers could be selected and included in this special issue, which represents an acceptance rate of 20%. Let us briefly introduce the 16 accepted papers as follows. The first paper in this special issue, authored by Lu et al., presents a set of localized AP access control algorithms, some of which have performance guarantee in terms of approximation ratio. The second paper, authored by Das et al., presents two solutions to the minimum query region connected cover problem to cope with both transient faults. The third paper, authored by Díaz et al., considers the problem of reporting events to a central location in a multihop wireless sensor network where the sensor nodes turn off their radio transceivers periodically. The next paper, authored by Mišić et al., models one possible balancing mechanism between transmission and sensing activities in cognitive personal area networks. The fifth paper, authored by Xiang et al., studies the problem of distributed virtual backbone construction in sensor networks. The sixth paper, authored by Xiong et al., aims at state-of-the-art self-stabilizing flocking control of wireless mobile robots with memory corruption. The seventh paper, authored by Jurdak et al., presents the open-source Octopus, a protocol-independent tool that provides live information about the network topology and sensor data. The eighth paper, authored by Li et al., proposes a pervasive architecture to integrate wireless mesh networks and robot swarm networks to build a robot swarm communication network. The next paper, authored by Yu et al., considers the discrete-time H2 output tracking control of wireless networked control systems where the time delays are modeled as Markov chains. The tenth paper, authored by Xiao et al., focuses on centralized algorithms to adopt effective monitor and control mechanism to do the scheduling and channel assignment in WiMAX Mesh networks. The eleventh paper, authored by Yu et al., proposes a sleeping management scheme to control the network topology and to reduce the energy consumption. The next paper, authored by Shah et al., proposes an integrated cluster-based coordination and routing framework for WSAN to ensure reliable action with efficient energy consumption. The thirteenth paper, authored by ElBatt et al., proposes the concept of cross-layer set-based routing to incorporate wireless interference into the routing decision and circumvent problem complexity. The fourteenth paper, authored by Yang et al., proposes sensor scheduling mechanisms such that the monitored area is continuously covered by each sensing component and the set of active nodes are connected. The fifteenth paper, authored by Raghavendra et al., presents a network-monitoring framework that includes a multi-tiered method of data collection. The sixteenth paper, authored by Liang et al., summarizes a standardized process and conduct experiments for industrial wireless network technologies of WIA-PA, which is an international specification of industrial wireless networks for process automation. In summary, all 16 papers included in this special issue have discussed wireless monitoring and control and related applications, and can serve as very useful references to the community.
