Abstract:Perovskite crystallization and morphology are two essential factors to the photoelectric performances of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A 3D metal-organic assembly [In-2(phen)(3)Cl-6]CH(3)CN2H(2)O (In2) is introduced for the first time into lead iodide precursor to modify the quality of a perovskite thin film through a two-step sequential deposition method. As a result, both the lead iodide and perovskite exhibit improved crystallization and modified morphology. The optimized film presents less trap states and is thus in favor of the charge transfer as well as charge collection. Consequently, open circuit voltage (V-oc) and fill factor obviously show enhancements from 0.99 to 1.04V and from 0.66 to 0.71, respectively, yielding a significant increase in a power conversion efficiency from 15.41% to 17.15%. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic property of In2 can increase the moisture resistance of the perovskite, which offers a simple and effective method to improve the stability of PSCs.

Abstract:Homogenously hexagonal prismatic AgBiS2 nanocrystals with sizes of about 7.6 nm have been synthesized by the selective absorption of oleylamine and anisotropic growth in a mixed solvent system. Quantum dot-sensitized solar cells with the as-prepared AgBiS2 nanocrystals as counterelectrode materials showed a conversion efficiency of 2.09% compared with that of Pt (1.73%).

Abstract:AgBiS2 nanocrystals have recently emerged as a RoHS compliant material for photovoltaics. This heavy-metal-free ternary chalcogenide can be prepared from earth-abundant precursors, is solution-processable and presents a high absorption coefficient as well as a suitable bandgap for solar cell applications. However, the full potential of AgBiS2 nanocrystals is yet to be realised; the highest efficiencies reported so far used very thin (∼35 nm) absorbing layers due to the limited carrier transport and trap-assisted recombination that hinder the performance of thicker layers. In this work we implement a synthetic route to obtain larger size colloidal AgBiS2 nanocrystals, which in turn allows to fabricate thin film solar cells with higher mobility and reduced trap-assisted recombination, resulting in a power conversion efficiency of 6.4%, due to a photocurrent increase of 4 mA/cm2 compared to prior reports. We conclude by discussing on the main current challenges underpinning the photovoltaic performance of this material as well as strategies to further reduce the voltage and photocurrent losses.

Disorder improves nanophotonic light trapping in thin-film solar cells

Abstract:We present a systematic experimental study on the impact of disorder in advanced nanophotonic light-trapping concepts of thin-film solar cells. Thin-film solar cells made of hydrogenated amorphous silicon were prepared on imprint-textured glass superstrates. For periodically textured superstrates of periods below 500 nm, the nanophotonic light-trapping effect is already superior to state-of-the-art randomly textured front contacts. The nanophotonic light-trapping effect can be associated to light coupling to leaky waveguide modes causing resonances in the external quantum efficiency of only a few nanometer widths for wavelengths longer than 500 nm. With increasing disorder of the nanotextured front contact, these resonances broaden and their relative altitude decreases. Moreover, overall the external quantum efficiency, i.e., the light-trapping effect, increases incrementally with increasing disorder. Thereby, our study is a systematic experimental proof that disorder is conceptually an advantage for nanophotonic light-trapping concepts employing grating couplers in thin-film solar cells. The result is relevant for the large field of research on nanophotonic light trapping in thin-film solar cells which currently investigates and prototypes a number of new concepts including disordered periodic and quasi periodic textures.

Abstract:Energetic disorder is one of the major impediments that limit the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Nevertheless, achieving a favorable nanoscale morphology that restricts the density of states proves to be challenging, especially in the state-of-the-art non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) systems. Here, we incorporate 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene (TMB) as a solid additive to restrict the energetic disorder and achieve outstanding efficiencies of OSCs. The results suggest that TMB possesses intense electrostatic interaction with the terminal groups of NFAs to facilitate direct face-to-face packing. During the film formation, TMB works as a bridge to connect adjacent NFAs, and a controlled π-π stacking distance can be obtained after its subsequent volatilization. The optimized morphology limits energetics disorder, which further enhances exciton delocalization and inhibits non-radiative energy loss. Consequently, TMB-incorporated binary devices based on PBDB-TF:eC9 and ternary devices based on PBDB-TF:eC9:HDO-4Cl record high efficiencies of 18.61% and 19.30%, respectively. This work provides new insights into morphology optimizations and offers inspiration for new approaches to improve OSC performance.

Abstract:AgBiS2 nanocrystals (NCs) are nontoxic, lead-free, and near-infrared absorbing materials. Eco-friendly solar cells were constructed using interdigitated layers of ZnO nanowires (NWs) and AgBiS2 NCs, with the aim of elongating the otherwise short carrier diffusion length of the AgBiS2 NC assembly. AgBiS2 NCs were uniformly infiltrated into the ZnO NW layers using a low-cost and easily scalable dip coating method. The resulting ZnO NW/AgBiS2 NC interdigitated structures provided efficient carrier pathways in constructed nanowire solar cells (NWSCs), composed of a transparent electrode/ZnO NW/AgBiS2 NC interdigitated layer/P3HT hole transport layer/Au. The photocurrent external quantum efficiency (EQE) in the visible to near-infrared regions was enhanced compared to those of the control solar cells made with ZnO/AgBiS2 tandem layered structures. The maximum EQE for the NWSCs reached 82% in the visible region, which is higher than the EQE values previously reported for solar cells fabricated with ZnO/AgBiS2 NCs. Abstract:CuSbS2 has been considered as a promising photovoltaic absorber material, due to its earth abundant and environmentally friendly constituents. However, the electron affinity and similar radius of cations bring heavy atomic disorders in CuSbS2 film, limiting its photovoltaic performance. Herein, we report an efficient way to reduce disorders by introducing Ag atom into CuSbS2 crystal structure. The crystal structure and chemical analysis confirm that Ag occupies the Cu position in the as-prepared films by the spray pyrolysis. The absorption spectra combined with photoluminescence measurement indicate that Ag-substituted CuSbS2 films have fewer recombination centers. The density functional theory calculation result reveals that Ag-substituted CuSbS2 has a more stable crystal structure, and the formation energy of the primary point defects obviously increases. Therefore, Ag-substituted CuSbS2 photovoltaic device shows asignificantly improved power conversion efficiency from 0.73% to 2.48%.

Abstract:Efficient charge‐carrier transport is critical to the success of emergent semiconductors in photovoltaic applications. So far, disorder has been considered detrimental for charge‐carrier transport, lowering mobilities and causing fast recombination. This work demonstrates that, when properly engineered, cation disorder in a multinary chalcogenide semiconductor can considerably enhance the charge‐carrier mobility and extend the charge‐carrier lifetime. Here, the properties of AgBiS2 nanocrystals (NCs) are explored where Ag and Bi cation‐ordering can be modified via thermal‐annealing. Local Ag‐rich and Bi‐rich domains formed during hot‐injection synthesis are transformed to induce homogeneous disorder (random Ag‐Bi distribution). Such cation engineering results in a six‐fold increase in the charge‐carrier mobility, reaching ∼2.7 cm2V−1s−1 in AgBiS2 NC thin films. It is further demonstrated that homogeneous cation disorder reduces charge‐carrier localisation, a hallmark of charge‐carrier transport recently observed in silver‐bismuth semiconductors. This work proposes that cation‐disorder engineering flattens the disordered electronic landscape, removing tail states that would otherwise exacerbate Anderson localisation of small polaronic states. Together, these findings unravel how cation‐disorder engineering in multinary semiconductors can enhance the efficiency of renewable energy applications. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aenm.202000453">2000453</a>, Weili Yu, Chunlei Guo and co‐workers demonstrate that by combining the space‐limiting technique and the anti‐temperature crystallization method, millimeter sized MAPbI3 perovskite monocrystals with thickness from tens of nanometers to micrometers can be fabricated. Solar cells based on the 300 nm thick perovskite monocrystal are prepared, which show 3% enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to their polycrystalline counterparts. This work provides a scalable way to synthesize high quality perovskite crystals with less grains and grain boundaries, is believed a key step to develop perovskite single crystal solar cells with high performance.

Abstract:Compared with industrial thick crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells, thin c-Si cells have unique advantages of greater cost effectiveness and cell flexibility, representing a future technology trend. However, its present efficiency is far behind that of conventional thick c-Si solar cells. To improve the efficiency, it is necessary to consider and implement advanced designs. We report a strategy of optimizing cell designs to significantly improve the efficiency of a 20 mu m-thick thin c-Si solar cell. Compared with the reference, the short-circuit current density is increased from 34.3 to 38.2 mA / cm(2), the open circuit voltage is boosted from 632 to 684 mV, and the fill factor presents an improvement from 76.2% to 80.8%, resulting in an absolute efficiency gain of 4.6% from 16.5% to 21.1%. Abstract:CuPbSbS3 (bournonite) has emerged as a promising light-absorbing material for thin-film solar cells due to its attractive photophysical properties. The crystallinity of CuPbSbS3 films is a main challenge of achieving high power conversion efficiency. Herein, we perform a series of optimization strategies to enhance the crystallinity of CuPbSbS3 films, including adjusting the annealing temperature and reducing the carbon residue. The optimized CuPbSbS3 film acquires an enhanced crystallinity, and an optimal solar cell device based on it achieves a power conversion efficiency of 2.65% with good stability. Abstract:Metal halide perovskite single crystals have become emerging candidates for photovoltaic applications due to their better optoelectronic properties and higher stability than their polycrystalline thin-film counterparts. However, in contrast to the rapid enhancement of power conversion efficiency (PCE), the operational stability of single-crystal perovskite solar cells (PSCs) remains far lagging behind. Herein, it is discovered that widely investigated 20 μm-thick single-crystal PSCs show poor operational stability, which is assigned to low crystal quality of these thin single crystals. Subsequently, the crystal quality of formamidinium0.55methylammonium0.45 lead triiodide (FA0.55MA0.45PbI3) thin single crystals are optimized by adjusting the ion diffusion velocity in confined space, leading to lower trap density, larger ion migration activation energy, and reduced light-induced degradation of material properties. As a result, stable single-crystal PSCs with no efficiency degradation after 330 h of continuous operation at the maximum power point under 1 sun illumination are achieved. Moreover, thickness-dependent device efficiency discloses an ultralong carrier transport length of 200 μm in FA0.55MA0.45PbI3 thin single crystals, which is instructive for developing lateral-structure solar cells.

Abstract:Ultrathin photovoltaic technology has great potential to improve efficiency and reduce costs. However, achieving optical thickness requires an effective light capture strategy. In this study, for GaAs thin film solar cells with an active layer thickness of 500nm, we adopt a combination strategy of front-end ITO/Ag/ITO transparent electrodes and back-end photonic crystals. By employing Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation, we verify that ITO/Ag/ITO transparent electrodes and AlGaAs photonic crystals can effectively enhance the light harvesting capacity of cells. The proposed cell structure has a spectral absorption rate (SAR) of 0.9781 in the visible wavelength range. To further optimize the photovoltaic performance parameters, we optimize the doping concentration of the pn junction in the cell. Finally, the short circuit current density (Jsc), open circuit voltage (Voc), fill factor (FF) and photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of GaAs thin film solar cells are successfully increased to 31.10mA/cm2, 1.28V, 88.18% and 35.12%, respectively. This provides crucial experimental validation and theoretical guidance for the advancement of ultra-thin photovoltaic technology.

Abstract:Compared to conjugated polymers, small‐molecule organic semiconductors present negligible batch‐to‐batch variations, but presently provide comparatively low power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in small‐molecular organic solar cells (SM‐OSCs), mainly due to suboptimal nanomorphology. Achieving precise control of the nanomorphology remains challenging. Here, two new small‐molecular donors H13 and H14 , created by fluorine and chlorine substitution of the original donor molecule H11 , are presented that exhibit a similar or higher degree of crystallinity/aggregation and improved open‐circuit voltage with IDIC‐4F as acceptor. Due to kinetic and thermodynamic reasons, H13 ‐based blend films possess relatively unfavorable molecular packing and morphology. In contrast, annealed H14 ‐based blends exhibit favorable characteristics, i.e., the highest degree of aggregation with the smallest paracrystalline π–π distortions and a nanomorphology with relatively pure domains, all of which enable generating and collecting charges more efficiently. As a result, blends with H13 give a similar PCE (10.3%) as those made with H11 (10.4%), while annealed H14 ‐based SM‐OSCs have a significantly higher PCE (12.1%). Presently this represents the highest efficiency for SM‐OSCs using IDIC‐4F as acceptor. The results demonstrate that precise control of phase separation can be achieved by fine‐tuning the molecular structure and film formation conditions, improving PCE and providing guidance for morphology design.

Abstract:Eco-friendly nanocrystals have attracted worldwide attention in recently years due to the ultrahigh absorption coefficient, broad absorbance range and non-toxic atoms of heavy metals e.g., lead and cadmium. With these benefits, the photovoltaic performance of eco-friendly nanocrystal solar cells (AgBiS2) has reached over 9% and exhibited great potential in the field of nanocrystal solar cells. In this review, we overviewed the synthesis, ligand exchange, device structure and stability of eco-friendly solar cells with the aim to advancing commercial applications. Firstly, we discussed the synthesis methods of eco-friendly nanocrystals and highlighted the key elements for high-quality nanocrystals. Thereafter, ligand exchange strategies were overviewed to further enhance the performance of AgBiS2 solar cells. Subsequently, we focused on device structure and presented an in-depth discussion on the photovoltaic stability to balance the performance and stability of AgBiS2 solar cells. Finally, the remaining challenges and our insights are proposed to further advance the development of eco-friendly solar cells based on AgBiS2 nanocrystals.
