Abstract:This study investigates the mechanism of AIE in the solid state through supramolecular metal-organic frameworks and mechanoluminescent materials for the first time. Herein, four novel differently substituted Schiff base building blocks, SB1-SB4, exhibit typical AIE properties with various fluorescence emissions from yellow to green. SB1-SB4 are linked through C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonding interactions to construct supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs): namely, SMOFSB1-SMOFSB4. Particularly, among these SMOFs, SMOFSB3 is observed to have micropores in the 3D supramolecular structure and exhibits mechanoluminescent properties (grinding). An emission turn-on mechanism occurs with destruction of micropores by grinding and blockage of intramolecular rotations of the methyl and acetonitrile in the micropores, resulting in emission turn-on in SMOFSB3. Single-crystal X-ray structures, powder X-ray diffraction, emission spectra at room temperature, temperature-dependent emission spectra, DFT calculations, and a charge separation hypothesis well demonstrate the emission turn-on mechanism, which is consistent with the mechanism of AIE. More importantly, the molecules demonstrated potential application for press-jet printing.

Abstract:Integrating aggregation‐induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) into designable metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant attention as it enables tunable materials with exceptional luminescence. This review provides a comprehensive summary and analysis of the luminescence mechanism and design principle of AIE MOFs, and highlights the state‐of‐the‐art progresses of their applications in chemical sensing, bioimaging, and disease therapy. Aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) materials exhibit remarkable emission in the aggregated or solid state while demonstrating minimal emission in dilute solutions. In contrast to conventional luminescent materials, AIE luminogens (AIEgens) offer several advantages in the aggregate state, including high quantum yield, excellent photostability, and low background signals, making them highly promising for diverse applications. Integrating AIEgens into designable metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) enables tunable and well‐ordered AIE materials, allowing for precise control over photophysical properties and deeper exploration of AIE mechanisms. Numerous AIE MOFs have been constructed and investigated, and several reviews focus on their structure design and applications in sensing and bioimaging. This review highlights the state‐of‐the‐art advancements in AIE MOFs, including mechanisms, design strategies, and applications in chemical sensing, bioimaging, and disease therapy. The challenges associated with practical applications of AIE MOFs are also addressed, with an emphasis on their large‐scale production involved interdisciplinary collaboration. This comprehensive review aims at guiding further development of AIE MOFs and promoting their practical applications in analysis, healthcare, and other luminescence related fields.

Abstract:Fluorogens with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) are a unique type of luminescent materials for sensing and imaging applications. The integration of AIE characteristics into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) structure is an emerging research field that has greatly advanced the optical properties of MOFs. This Review mainly focuses on the development of AIE MOFs with highlights on materials development and their applications in analytical and biomedical fields. The first part discusses the structure design for AIE MOF from the perspective of linkers, metal nodes, and heterogeneous composites. The second part summarizes the major mechanisms on the property modulation of AIE MOFs in response to different stimuli based on fluorescence quenching, in-situ restriction of intramolecular motion, and framework deformation switches. The outlook elaborates on the potential of AIE MOFs, which have opened a new dimension in luminescent material development.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Development of new aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminogens has been a hot research topic because they thoroughly solve the notorious aggregation-caused quenching effect confronted in conventional fluorogens and their promising applications in, for example, organic light-emitting diodes, chemo-and biosensors and bioimaging. Many AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have been prepared but most of them are silole, tetraphenylethene, distyrylanthracene, and their derivatives. In this work, based on the skeleton of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP), a new AIEgen, named TPP-PDCV, is generated by functionalizing TPP with malonitrile group. TPP-PDCV can serve as a sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting hydrogen sulfide with high speciality and low detection limit of down to 0.5 x 10(-6) m. The mechanism for such detection is fully investigated and deciphered. Unlike most reported mechanochromic AIEgens, which undergo turn-off or -on emission or emission bathochromic shift in the presence of external stimuli, TPP-PDCV exhibits an abnormal and reversible mechanochromism with hypsochromic effect. These indicate that TPP-PDCV possesses a huge potential for high-tech applications through rational modification of TPP core.

Abstract:It is extremely significant and desirable to integrate the fascinating properties of mechanochromism and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in one simple molecule. Herein, pyrene-based aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) with mechanofluorochromic (MFC) properties solve the traditionally existing aggregation- caused quenching (ACQ) challenge. Three cyanoethylene-functionalized pyrene-based derivatives were designed and synthesized. All compounds exhibit remarkable aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) activity by a 3-20 times enhancement in mixed H2O/THF 2 O/THF solutions. More importantly, high fluorescence efficiency was recorded in the solid state, especially for the luminogen 2c , with more than 200 times observed increased efficiency from 0.3% in solution to 69.8% in the solid state. Meanwhile, excellent mechanochromism properties and reversibility against the grinding treatment was systematically investigated. The excellent fatigue resistance properties are a necessity for potential applications in the field of anti-counterfeiting fluorescent inks and for the encryption of security information.

Abstract:The research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has drawn increasing interests in the past decade. With the efforts scientists paid, a variety of AIE systems have been developed, among which the tetraphenylethelene and silole derivatives are the most studied. Development of new AIE systems could further enrich the AIE molecules and promote the development of AIE area. In this communication, we prepared a new AIE system based on 1,2,4,6-tetraphenylpyridinium ions according to the restriction of intramolecular rotation mechanism. These molecules could be facilely synthesized via one-step and one-pot reaction. The ionic AIE-active molecules could find wide application in sensing and optoelectronic areas.

Abstract:Luminescent lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) draw great interest due to their promising luminescent properties and wide applications in sensor design. In this work, a europium-organic framework (DPQ-Eu) has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions based on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ligand 4, 4′-(quinoxaline-2, 3-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2DPQ). Structural analyses show that DPQ-Eu adopts the monoclinic C2/c space group and forms a 3, 6-connected 2D porous network with a topological symbol of {42·6}2{44·69·82}. The formation of DPQ-Eu contributes an absolute quantum efficiency of 21.49% compared with that of the AIE ligand H2DPQ (0.02%) mainly due to the coordination-induced emission, providing DPQ-Eu with a great potential of being a luminescent sensor. Fluorescent investigations show that DPQ-Eu has a selective and sensitive response to Fe3+ and Hg2+ among various metal ions by ratiometric emission changes of the decreased emission at 415 nm and increased emission at 676 nm, with the detection limits of 25.99 and 39.70 nM and good reusability (5 times). The sensing behaviors probably can be ascribed to the promoted antenna effect from the ligand to the Eu(III) center by the coordination of Fe3+/Hg2+ to the quinoxaline moiety. For anion sensing, DPQ-Eu can respond to Cr2O7 2– by emission quenching at both 415 and 676 nm with a detection limit of 9.88 nM and 5 times reusability, probably associated with the energy competing absorption and reduced energy transfer from the ligand to the Eu(III) center. In addition, DPQ-Eu shows ratiometric emission changes to CN– by the emission enhancement and decrease at 415 and 676 nm, respectively, with a detection limit of 8.19 nM and five-run recycling tests, probably corresponding to the inhibition of energy transfer from the ligand to the Eu(III) center caused by the binding interactions between the CN– and Eu(III) nodes.

Abstract:Aggregation‐induced emission‐based luminogens (AIEgens) have aroused enormous interest due to their unique high fluorescence in a condensed state. To further explore their potential applications, such as chemical monitoring, immobilization of AIE molecules has been widely studied with a variety of supports. Crystalline porous materials, such as metal‐organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, hydrogen‐bonded organic framework, and organic cages, demonstrate well‐controlled structures, large surface areas, and promising stabilities, thus providing a perfect platform for AIE agents loading. Outstanding chemical sensing performances are achieved based on these AIE‐active crystalline porous materials, such as high sensitivity, short response time, selective identification, and high recyclability, which provide a new alternative to readily detect various hazardous molecules. Furthermore, precise structures of AIEgen‐based crystalline porous materials offer an easy way to investigate detection mechanisms. This mini‐review will provide a brief overview of AIEgen‐based crystalline porous materials for detection and then address how to improve sensing performances remarkably.

Abstract:The past two decades have witnessed significant advances in the field of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Luminescent materials with AIE characteristics (AIEgens) are of great importance because they can show enhanced and improved properties for different high-tech applications. Metal ions are vital for all living species. In the recent years, the AIE platform has been widely adopted in the design and synthesis of metal ion-responsive luminescent probes because of its excellent photophysical properties such as microenvironment sensitivity, high signal-to-noise ratio, high photostability, high emission efficiency in the aggregated state, and large Stokes' shift. In this review, we present an overview of the design principles of metal ion responsive AIEgens that can be generated using a modular approach. We have summarized the typical examples of metal ion responsive AIEgens, and their sensing mechanisms developed from 2005 to 2020.

Abstract:Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a unique photophysical phenomenon observed for some specific fluorophores, which are faintly or non-emissive in solution but become highly emissive in solid and aggregated states. In the cases of fluorescent probes, AIE active molecules possess some unparallel advantages over their classical counterparts. On one hand, it allows more AIE active molecules to bind to the target analyte, without worrying about the aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching; thus favors fluorescence detection. On the other hand, the feature of drastic enhancement in fluorescence intensity associating with an aggregation event can be used as a method of quantitative detection. In this paper, a series of representative AIE molecules are demonstrated; their applications as biological probes in sensing of protein, DNA, G4, and chiral amines are highlighted; their working principles and features of these molecules are described. Finally, a brief outlook on the design of new AIE-active molecules and the application of AIE-molecules in relevant fields is forwarded.

Abstract:In recent years, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have gained significant attention and have been developed for various applications in different fields including biomedical research, chemical analysis, optoelectronic devices, materials science, and nanotechnology. AIE is a unique luminescence phenomenon, and AIEgens are fluorescent moieties with relatively twisted structures that can overcome the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. Additionally, AIEgens offer advantages such as non-washing properties, deep tissue penetration, minimal damage to biological structures, high signal-to-noise ratio, and excellent photostability. Fluorescent probes with AIE characteristics exhibit high sensitivity, short response time, simple operation, real-time detection capability, high selectivity, and excellent biocompatibility. As a result, they have been widely applied in cellular imaging, luminescent sensing, detection of physiological abnormalities in the human body, as well as early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This review provides a comprehensive summary and discussion of the progress over the past four years regarding the detection of metal ions, small chemical molecules, biomacromolecules, microbes, and cells based on AIE materials, along with discussing their potential applications and future development prospects.

Abstract:By incorporating an anthracene moiety into a framework, a multiresponsive luminescent metal-organic framework (1) has been synthesized, which exhibits both direct chemiluminescence (CL) and dual tunable photoluminescence. By utilizing the CL, 1 has been explored as a selective visual sensor for hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, 1 also exhibits tunable fluorescence response toward different analytes. For electron-rich aromatics, "turn-on" and "turnoff" responses can be simply switched by varying the excitation wavelength. For nitroaromatics, 1 exhibits novel linear quantitative quenching response. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experiments have been carried out to study the unique fluorescence response. The multiple luminescence properties and dual tunable sensing response indicate that incorporating anthracene moieties into frameworks should be a promising strategy to develop unprecedented luminescent materials with remarkable sensing properties.

Abstract:An aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active fluorescent chemosensor based on a tetraphenylethene (WE) unit has been successfully designed and synthesized. Interestingly, the luminogen could detect Zn2+ selectively in a THE solution with the detection limit of 1.24 x 10(-6) mol L-1. Meanwhile, the luminogen could also detect Hg2+ selectively in a THE-water mixture with the water content of 90%, and the detection limit was 2.55 x 10(-9) mol L-1. Furthermore, the solid-state mechanochromic fluorescence behavior of the luminogen was investigated systematically. Indeed, the AIE-active luminogen also exhibited reversible mechanofluorochromic phenomenon involving fluorescent color change from blue to green, and powder X-ray diffraction results indicated that the switchable morphology conversion between crystalline and amorphous states was responsible for this mechanochromism phenomenon. Abstract:Since the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was coined by Ben Zhong Tang in 2001, AIE has grown into a new cutting-edge interdisciplinary research field and received intensive interests from both the academia and the industry. On this basis, AIE concept has been successfully introduced and applied in the area of coordination-driven self-assembly, which has resulted in many new and interesting AIE active metal-organic coordination complexes. In this chapter, we will describe recent progress on the AIE active metal-organic coordination species. The synthetic strategy to integrate AIEgens with different types of metal-organic coordination structures including metallacycles, metallacages, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) will be discussed. Besides, the properties of the AIE active metal-organic coordination complexes and their applications in fluorescence sensors, cell imaging and theranostics, and light-emitting materials, etc. will be also comprehensively surveyed. The purpose of this chapter is to provide the fundamental understanding on the structure-property-application relationships of AIE active metal-organic coordination architectures and provide some insight into the rational design of such molecules/materials with desirable properties in the future.

Abstract:The discovery of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon in many classes of organic molecules has revolutionized our understanding of the photoluminescence properties of materials. These breakthroughs have opened up new possibilities for real-life applications and state-of-the-art technologies. AIE luminogens (AIEgens) have emerged as highly useful tools, effectively overcoming the limitations of conventional aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) luminogens. They find applications in various fields such as biomedical uses, optoelectronics, stimuli-responsive materials, and chemosensing. In particular, the development of highly sensitive and selective AIE fluorescent probes has significantly complemented conventional instrumental analysis methods, offering low-cost, convenient, and rapid detection of target analytes. With intensive research efforts in this area, a wide range of small molecule analytes, including biologically important molecules, drug molecules, volatile organic compounds, and explosives, can now be detected. This review aims to provide an overview of the progress made in the development of AIE-based organic small molecule probes over the past five years.

Abstract:Fluorescence sensing can not only identify a target substrate qualitatively but also achieve the purpose of quantitative detection through the change of the fluorescence signal. It has the advantages of immense sensitivity, rapid response, and excellent selectivity. The proposed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) concept solves the problem of the fluorescence of traditional fluorescent molecules becoming weak or quenched in high concentration or aggregated state conditions. Schiff base fluorescent probes have the advantages of simple synthesis, low toxicity, and easy design. They are often used for the detection of various substances. In this review we cover late developments in Schiff base compounds with AIE characteristics working as fluorescence sensors.
Restriction of Intramolecular Vibration in Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens: Applications in Multifunctional Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Butterfly-like molecules of oxacalix[2]arene[2]pyrazine (OAP) are reported, which exhibit the typical characteristics of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) via the restriction of intramolecular vibration (RIV) mechanism. Unlike any of the reported RIV-type AIE molecules, the synthetic procedures of which are complicated and have associated high costs, OAP AIEgens can be synthesized in a facile manner by a one-step catalyst-free reaction using commercially available materials. Notably, OAP AIEgens are ideal ligands for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their built-in pyrazine coordination sites. OAP-based MOFs exhibit multiple potential applications in reversible gas response, encrypted information storage, and construction of white light-emitting devices. This work builds on RIV-type AIEgens, offers additional selections of bridging ligands for constructing luminescent MOFs and provides a visualized prototype to understand the effect of the RIV process on the luminescence properties of MOFs.
Aggregation-Induced Emission-Responsive Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract:Although many studies on luminescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported for chemical sensing applications, it has yet to be realized in MOFs the precise linearity control over photophysical characteristics and sensing sensitivity at the molecular level for a fundamental understanding of the structure–property relationships. Here we demonstrate the first example of aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-responsive MOFs with precise linearity control of photophysics and chemical sensing. We employ a multivariate strategy to tune the number of AIE molecular rotors (dynamic phenyl rings) in a MOF system by varying the ratio of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based organic linker, leading to highly tunable photophysical characteristics (e.g., maximum emission peak, quantum yield, and optical band gap) featuring linear correlations with linker content. Importantly, the sensing sensitivity of these dynamic MOFs can be enhanced by increasing the number of AIE molecular rotors with perfect linearity control, as systematically investigated by fluorescence responsive to temperature, viscosity, guest molecular size, as well as theoretical calculations. Our study shows that the sensing sensitivity of the AIE-responsive MOF in this study (termed as NUS-13-100%) is better than those of our previously reported materials. Significantly, the observed linear relationship between emission intensity and molecular weight of polystyrene as the analyte suggests that such AIE-responsive MOFs could be used as molecular sensors for fluorescence-based determination of polymer molecular weight. Eventually, the optical sensing device containing NUS-13-100% shows a perfect linearity response with high sensitivity for the detection of trace toxic benzene vapor.
