Abstract:This Special Issue is dedicated to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at Nanjing University. The aim is to present a picture of materials research at Nanjing University and stimulate more collaborations between Nanjing University and institutions around the world. Established in 1902, Nanjing University (sometimes Nanking University) is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. Maintaining good momentum in teaching, research, social service, as well as cultural inheritance and innovation, the university perennially ranks as one of the top academic institutions in China. In 1998, it became a member of the elite C9 League of Chinese universities. In 2017, it was accredited as a Class A institution in the Double First-Class University Plan, a government initiative to cultivate an elite group of Chinese universities into world-class institutions. These distinctions provide Nanjing University with the opportunity to develop into a highly competitive first-rate university in China, Asia, and worldwide. Today, Nanjing University has two main campuses: Xianlin Campus and Gulou Campus, with 31 schools, 1 national laboratory, 7 national key laboratories, and 9 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education. Over 13 243 undergraduates, 19 902 graduate students, and 3378 international students are studying at Nanjing University. Meanwhile, the university has assembled a faculty team made up of the most accomplished scholars in China, including 28 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 10 national distinguished teachers. CEAS at Nanjing University was founded in December 2009, in line with the successful practice of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, based on the advantageous disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials, and microelectronics in Nanjing University. By condensing, crossing, and fusing these prior disciplines, CEAS covers multidisciplinary research on science and engineering and develops innovative solutions to tackle major societal challenges. Currently, CEAS focuses on four cutting-edge engineering disciplines and national strategic priorities, with each focus area corresponding to an academic department, namely materials science and engineering (MSE), quantum electronics and optical engineering, biomedical engineering (BME), and energy science and engineering (ESE). In 2019, a new 60 000 m2 world-class building (Figure 1) for research and education opened to house the academic departments and research centers, embodying CEAS';s global vision and forward-looking plan. Materials science and advanced engineering is a comprehensive interdisciplinary field, living in a collaborative space of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. Besides CEAS, materials research is distributed in several other schools at Nanjing University, including the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Physics, and the School of Electronic Science and Engineering (ESE). There are also several research platforms to support materials research and development, including the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures, the State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry, the Key Laboratory of Mesoscopic Chemistry, the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Artificial Functional Materials, the Jiangsu Research Center for Optical Communication System and Network Engineering, the International Research Center for Quantum Information and Photonics Technology, etc. On the 10th anniversary of the founding of CEAS at Nanjing University, we are delighted to present here a collection of 13 Reviews and 9 Progress Reports. Taken together, the 22 articles in this special issue provide a dynamic picture of recent research activities and achievements in materials research at Nanjing University. The authors are mainly faculty members from CEAS, but not exclusively. Contributions from the faculty members in the School of Physics, Chemistry, and ESE are included as well to show the integrated collaborative environment at Nanjing University. In the field of energy materials and batteries, Haoshen Zhou et al. (article number 1903790) present an overview of recent research and progress in Li–CO2 and Na–CO2 batteries, including crucial reaction mechanisms on cathodes, catalyst design, electrolyte selection, and anode protection. Jia Zhu et al. (article number 1907392) summarize the recent progress in the development of tin halide and mixed lead–tin halide perovskite solar cells, including methods, composition, additives, and monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells. Huigang Zhang et al. (article number 1903808) focus on the latest progress of electrodeposition technologies in fabricating lithium-based batteries. Zheng Hu et al. (article number 1904177) present the up-to-date synthetic strategies of carbon-based nanocages, the utilization of their unique porous structure and morphology for the construction of composites with foreign active species, and their applications toward advanced energy storage and conversion. Junjie Zhu et al. (article number 1903796) highlight the research progress of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction coupling with a photoanode/bioanode from the perspective of improving the energy utilization efficiency of the whole reaction system. In the field of optical materials, Yanqing Lu et al. (article number 1903665) discuss the recent research and development in liquid-crystal-mediated geometric phase planar optics and provide an outlook regarding potential prospects. Xiaopeng Hu et al. (article number 1903775) highlight recent research and development in nonlinear beam shaping in domain-engineered ferroelectric crystals. Mu Wang et al. (article number 1904646) highlight some recent developments in realizing broadband electromagnetic metamaterials via dispersion compensation, nonresonant effects, and a number of tradeoff approaches. Shuming Wang et al. (article number 1904935) briefly review the recent progress in chromatic-dispersion manipulation based on metasurfaces. Ting Xu et al. (article number 1903787) highlight recent research and development in morphology engineering of photonic metamaterial absorbers, and related interdisciplinary applications. In the field of artificial functional materials, Yanfeng Chen et al. (article number 1903639) review the state-of-the-art developments in the field of complex non-Hermitian physics, focusing on parity-time symmetric optics and photonics. Yong Hu et al. (article number 1904337) summarize recent advances regarding strategies harnessing nanoplatforms to conquer multiple barriers possessed by tumors and cancer cells. Di Wu et al. (article number 1904123) review recent progress of ferroelectric-tunnel-junction devices with an emphasis on the modulation of potential barriers. Feng Miao et al. (article number 1903800) review recent research and development of high-performance device applications based on van der Waals heterostructures and discuss a few key challenges and opportunities for the future development of multifunctional and high-performance devices. Jinglin Zuo et al. (article number 1903762) highlight recent research and development in self-healing polymers based on coordination bonds. Junming Liu et al. (article number 1904508) present a comprehensive summary of the recent progress in the physics and multifunctionalities of the well-known Jeff = 1/2 antiferromagnet Sr2IrO4. Jun Xu et al. (article number 1903945) give a comprehensive review on the important topic of planar growth of semiconducting nanowires for integration and applications. Fengqi Song et al. (article number 1904593) review the development process and the recent progress in realization of exotic quantized transport such as the quantum Hall effect and the quantum anomalous Hall effect based on topological insulator materials. In the field of advanced material characterizations, Peng Wang et al. (article number 1903747) review the recent research and development of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for understanding fundamental problems in all-solid-state lithium batteries. Yu Deng et al. (article number 1906105) highlight recent research and development regarding in situ mechanical TEM/STEM techniques. In the field of optoelectronics, Xinran Wang et al. (article number 1902039) discuss the recent developments made on high-performance graphene hybrid photodetectors especially in the context of new materials, device designs, integration with Si platforms, and flexible optoelectronics. Bin Liu et al. (article number 1904354) present their recent progress in the field of III-nitrides-based optoelectronic devices, including efficient hybrid micro/nano-LEDs, low-threshold nanolasers, and high-gain UV avalanche photodiodes. Drawing on the talents of faculties across the university, as well as the generous support and help from our friends in China and abroad, Nanjing University will produce not only world-class knowledge and technologies, but nurture students and scholars with a global view and competence, who can meet the major challenges and opportunities posed by an increasingly globalized society as well.
