Abstract:As atmospheric secondary pollution, surface ozone (O 3 ) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution have become pressing and difficult atmospheric environmental issues for megacities with dense population, intense industrialization, and urbanization. As a consequence, the combined mitigation of O 3 and PM 2.5 pollution is imperative and strongly requires the cocontrol of their precursor emissions. However, it is challenging to obtain simultaneous mitigation without proper guidance, and reducing only a single type of precursor is not desirable. Quantifying the contribution of their precursor emissions to O 3 and PM 2.5 concentrations is quite necessary for the co-pollution control. In this study, we explore the crucial impact factors of O 3 and PM 2.5 co-mitigation by analyzing the adjoint sensitivities of their precursors from all source sectors over the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in China using the GEOS-Chem adjoint model and propose an effective emission co-control strategy based on the sensitivity spatial information and sensitivity prioritizations of their precursors. The mitigation effects of multiple emission control scenarios are compared, and the proposed emission co-control strategy shows the superior performance in the entire region. In addition, the results show that the role of NH 3 emission reduction for the improvement of PM 2.5 pollution is essential and should be considered in the mitigation strategy.
