Abstract:Using the resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) resin as carbon source, core-shell structured carbon-coated zinc oxide (ZnO@RFC) was synthesized by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) assisted in-situ polymerization followed with carbonization process. The results showed that the ZnO particles were uniformly coated by an amorphous carbon layer. The excellent structural stability and high electrochemical performance depend it to be designed into carbon shell with a tunable thickness up to 14.4 nm, resulting in the ZnO@RFC anode delivers initial discharge specific capacity of 543 mAh g(-1) and optimized 125 cycle life with capacity retention of 97.5% for Zn/Ni secondary batteries. And the effects of the thickness of carbon shell on electrochemical performance, corrosion and hydrogen evolution reaction are fully investigated. The results indicate that the carbon shell not only improves the electrical conductivity between ZnO particles but also increases the stability of ZnO in electrolyte. Solid-Phase Synthesis of ZnO@Bi 2 O 3 Core–Shell Composites for Long-Life NiZn Batteries

Abstract:In this work, core-shell ZnO@Bi2O3 composites are fabricated by a solid-phase method. SEM, TEM, and element mapping images confirm the uniform distribution of Bi2O3 film over the surface of ZnO particles. The formation mechanism is proposed. In addition, the electrochemical performance of core–shell ZnO@Bi2O3 composites is measured with the help of CV and EIS, and the optimal reaction parameters are obtained. Furthermore, the optimized ZnO@Bi2O3 with 3 wt % Bi2O3 as anode materials is used for the NiZn battery, which has delivered a high energy density of 177.23 W h kg–1 and outstanding cycle stability up to 3400 cycles. The Bi2O3 layer suppresses hydrogen evolution and effectively mitigates the migration of Zn(OH)4 2–, dendrite formation, and passivation of zinc anode due to substance effect and as ion sieve. We propose that this is a facile and easy synthetic method that can be scaled and may provide guidance for the synthesis of other core–shell structures.

Abstract:A core-shell hybrid of ZnO and nitrogen-doped carbon (ZnO@C:N) is designed as a long-cycling anode for LIBs. The ZnO@C:N hybrid has a high initial capacity of 1116 mA h g-1 and a reversible capacity of 608 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles at 0.1 A g-1. The unique core-shell structure, high conductivity due to nitrogen doping, and uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formed in the electrode are revealed to result in the remarkable electrochemical performances of the ZnO@C:N electrodes.
Zinc-induced phase reconstruction of cobalt-nickel double hydroxide cathodes for high-stability and high-rate nickel-zinc batteries

Abstract:Nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries have received extensive attention in the field of energy storage. However, the unsatisfactory durability greatly impedes their wider commercial application. Herein, a novel and efficient zinc induced phase reconstruction method was reported to boost the electrochemical stability of cobalt-nickel double hydroxide (CoNi-DH) cathode materials for developing high-stability and high-rate Ni-Zn batteries. The inherent mechanism for this phase reconstruction method to achieve the improvement of electrochemical stability was systematically investigated and clarified in this work by combining theoretical calculations and experimental tests. The research results confirmed that the zinc-induced phase reconstruction can produce a new phase of Zn2Co3(OH)(10)center dot 2H(2)O in the mixed-phase of CoNi-DH without sacrificing its hierarchical micro-nano structure. This Zn2Co3(OH)(10)center dot & nbsp;2H(2)O phase has a much smaller shrinkage of the lattice spacing of host layers during the redox reaction relative to the pure Co(OH)(2) phase, thereby it can inhibit structural damage during the charge-discharge cycle. In addition, the retained hierarchical micro-nano structure can ensure good capacity output. Therefore, the as-fabricated mixed hydroxide electrode and Ni-Zn battery achieve remarkable improvement in the cycling life and exhibit superior rate performance. Moreover, the resultant mixed hydroxide electrode displays good application in the flexible quasi-solid-state Ni-Zn battery.
Ultrasound-induced elevation of interlayer spacing and conductivity of CoNi hydroxides for high-performance Ni-Zn batteries

Abstract:Nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries hold a lot of promise for energy storage thanks to their high output volt-age, plentiful Zn supply, and low toxicity. Achieving the facile preparation of high-performance cathodes at ambient temperature remains a challenge, it is however essential for practical applications. Here, in the present study, an efficient ultrasound-assisted one-step fabrication of CoNi double hydroxide (UA-CoNi DH) microspheres at room temperature that performs well as a cathode for Ni-Zn batteries was proposed. This designed ultrasound-assisted method induces the formation of metal double hydroxide with an elevation of interlayer spacing and bulk conductivity while maintaining the structure features of CoNi DH prepared without ultrasound assistance. As a result, the UA-CoNi DH as an electrode mate-rial displays highly enhanced electrochemical properties relative to CoNi DH prepared without ultrasound assistance. Benefitting from the improved performance of our UA-CoNi DH electrode, the Ni-Zn battery with UA-CoNi DH as the cathode (UA-CoNi DH//Zn) delivers a good specific capacity (202.36 mAh/g) and rate performance (70.49% capacity maintained at a 10-fold higher current), presenting more than 71.61% and 21.99% improvement relative to the CoNi DH//Zn battery, respectively. This work offers guidelines for constructing high-performance Ni-Zn battery cathodes in an open environment. Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) based on Zn/MnO2 are highly attractive owing to their low cost, safety, environmental benignity, and elemental abundance. However, the MnO2 cathode is still insufficiently reversible at a high energy density and under long-life cycling owing to its dissolution–redeposition and low electronic conductivity. In this study, core–shell-structured SP@PDA-d-δ-MnO2 with consecutive super p cores and an evenly distributed δ-MnO2 shell was designed and prepared. SP@PDA-d-δ-MnO2, as a cathode material for aqueous ZIBs, shows a high specific capacity, moderate rate, and cycling properties in a 2.0 M ZnSO4 aqueous electrolyte. We determined that the continuously connected conductive carbon inside MnO2 facilitates electron conduction in the cathode material and provides a conductive matrix for the electrodeposition of Mn2+, which contribute to the performance of aqueous ZIBs.

Abstract:In this study, the nano-sized ZnO/Bi2O3 composites were synthesized with the zinc-bismuth bimetallic-MOFs as the precursor for the first time. The metal ions were homogeneously anchored on the self-assembled precursor with a structure of hollow sphere. The results showed that the obtained ZnO presented a typical structure of hexagonal prismatic and an even distribution of element Zn and Bi was realized. Utilized as anode materials of Zn/Ni battery, the composites displays an ultra-high average discharge capacity of 630 mAh g−1 at 1 C and longer cycle life than the unmodified pure ZnO.
High Stability Hypha-Like Core-Shell Nanostructure by In Situ Induced Phase Inversion for Zinc Metal Batteries

Abstract:Nanomaterials are widely used in many fields for their unique physical and chemical properties and especially demonstrate irreplaceability in energy storage systems. In this paper, a novel composite of copper sulfide with hypha-like core-shell nano-structure is synthesized by in situ phase inversion method, which serves as high stability negative electrode materials of zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). The unique structure facilitates efficient electron and ion transport, enhances the kinetics of electrochemical reactions, and effectively suppresses the undesired expansion and decomposition of transition metal compounds. As a result, the half battery exhibits high specific capacity (250.2 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), reliable rate performance, and cycle stability (98.3 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 500 cycles). Additionally, when assembled with ZnxMnO2 positive to form a full battery, it demonstrates good cycling capacity at an intermediate current density of 2 A g-1, while maintaining excellent structural stability over 5,000 cycles (61% retention).

Abstract:The graphical abstract illustrates a novel nanostructuring approach to address challenges of the Zn anode in Zn‐alkaline secondary batteries. Carbon‐coated ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO@C) mitigate concerns such as Zn dendrites, self‐corrosion, and passivation. Nanoscale ZnO particles effectively prevent passivation, while the carbon shell slows down the dissolution of zincate, which limits the anode performance of uncoated nanoparticles. While alkaline Zn batteries, like traditional rechargeable aqueous batteries, boast an advantage in terms of energy density, their progress has been hampered by concerns related to the anode. These concerns include issues like Zn dendrites, self‐corrosion, passivation, shape change, and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To tackle these challenges, we have introduced a nanostructuring approach for the anode, employing carbon‐coated ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO@C) as the active material. In this study, we synthesized ZnO@C nanoparticles in an environmentally sustainable and scalable manner to address passivation and dissolution issues jointly. Nanoscale ZnO particles effectively prevent passivation, while carbon shell slows down the dissolution of zincate. The Zn anode exhibits a significant performance boost when compared to Zn foil and bare ZnO nanoparticles, even when subjected to demanding conditions (without the use of ZnO‐saturated electrolyte). This rechargeable Zn anode marks a significant step toward the realization of practical, high‐energy rechargeable aqueous batteries, such as Zn‐air batteries.

Porous ZnO Nanosphere Inherently Encapsulated in Carbon Framework as a High-Performance Anode For Ni-Zn Secondary Batteries

Abstract:Nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) secondary battery that is environmentally friendly and inexpensive has been regarded as a promising rechargeable battery system. However, the generation of deformation and dendrites of the traditional zinc anode during the cycling can cause capacity degradation and impede its practical application. Herein, we design a hierarchical ZnO nanosphere coated with an inherently derived ZIF-8 porous carbon shell (ZnO@CZIF-8) using a simple controllable method. The conductive carbon shell and porous ZnO core can provide more active sites, allow the fast transfer of electrons, and buffer the volume expansion of the electrode effectively. Benefiting from the synergistic effect amid the inherently ZIF-8-derived carbon shell and ZnO core, ZnO@CZIF-8 nanospheres exhibit a satisfying capacity of 316 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 after 50 cycles and an outstanding rate capacity when acting as the anode for a Ni-Zn secondary battery with merchant agglomerative Ni(OH)2 as the cathode. These results imply that the ZnO@CZIF-8 nanosphere is a hopeful anode for a high-energy Ni-Zn secondary battery.
Highly (002)-oriented ZnO in ZnO-N-C microflakes coating layer for stable zinc anode in zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable alkaline zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are widely used in small electronic devices with high theoretical energy density, low cost, and environmentally friendly. However, Zn anode will emerge dendrite growth and corrosion problems during cycling and seriously affect the cycle life of the batteries. Thereby, a new ZnO-N-C microflake was synthesized as a protection layer for Zn anode by hydrothermal methods and subsequent calcination processes in this work. The ZnO with more preferred crystal plane (002) in the ZnO-N-C-600 microflakes can provide uniform charge distribution to induce the uniform deposition of Zn 2+ . And the strong interaction among each component in the ZnO-N-C can accelerate the electron transport to inhibit the violent growth of dendrites and further improve reversibility of Zn 2+ plating/stripping. The Zn@ZnO-N-C-600 assembled symmetric battery achieves a stable 800 h cycling with a low polarization voltage (70 mV) at 0.5 mA cm −2 , while the bare zinc symmetric battery has a cycle life of less than 170 h. Zn@ZnO-N-C -600 used as anode in alkaline zinc–air batteries shows comparable electrochemical performance. This work provides a broad application prospect for the development of a stable Zn anode for rechargeable zinc–air batteries.

Effect of material composition on the performance for ZnO@C/Bi as Zn anode

Abstract:Inhibiting dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution corrosion play a key role in improving the anode performance of zinc secondary batteries. ZnO@C/Bi composites with a unique core–shell structure were fabricated, in which the porous carbon coating acted as an ion sieve to inhibit dendrite growth, while the embedded Bi alleviated the hydrogen evolution corrosion of the anode due to its high hydrogen evolution overpotential. Although the design of carbon coating embedded with Bi improves the performance of zinc anode, the Bi content and carbon coating thickness still have great influence on the performance. According to the results, the corrosion current density decreases from 20.55 to 15.13 mA cm −2 and increases to 17.22 mA cm −2 with increasing Bi content (from 4.14 to 5.66 wt% and to 8.01 wt%), and the best corrosion resistance is obtained for ZnO@C/Bi with 5.66 wt% Bi content. Likewise, when the coating layer thickens from 2.28 to 5.48 nm and then to 14.26 nm, the average discharge-specific capacity increases from 586.87 to 591.59 mAh g −1 and to 634.96 mAh g −1 , and the cycle life increases from 110 to more than 200 cycles. After the coating layer continues to increase to 20.38 nm, the average specific capacity decreases to 587.68 mAh g −1 . Consequently, the obtained ZnO@C/Bi with the optimal material composition (5.66 wt% for Bi content, 14.26 nm for carbon coating thickness) shows excellent electrochemical performance with a capacity retention rate of 95.79% (631.3 mAh g −1 ) after 230 cycles.

Abstract:Sn6O4(OH)4-coated ZnO was successfully prepared by homogeneous precipitation technique based on the hydrolyzation of SnCl2. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrograph and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed that Sn6O4(OH)4 was coated on the surface of ZnO particle. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDS) of Sn6O4(OH)4-coated ZnO showed that the content of coating was about 7wt%. The electrochemical performance of Sn6O4(OH)4-coated ZnO was investigated by charge/discharge method and slow rate cyclic voltammogram. Compared with pure ZnO and ZnO intermingled with SnO2, Sn6O4(OH)4-coated ZnO showed the largest discharge capacity (557mAhg−1), the most stable midpoint discharge voltage, the lowest fading rate and charge plateau voltage. XRD pattern of discharged Zn electrode showed that the coating changed irreversibly into Sn and always existed as the form of Sn.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have been regarded as promising candidates for advanced energy storage devices due to their high capacity and safety. However, they usually suffer from dendrite growth and side reactions, which severely destabilize the electrode/electrolyte interface and undermine the electrochemical performance. Herein, we report ZnO nanorod-decorated Zn anodes using a facile in situ hydrothermal method. The reactions and evolution at the anode–electrolyte interface are systematically investigated. Various characterization techniques suggest that ZnO transforms into a Zn-ion conductive Zn4SO4(OH)6·4H2O (ZHS·4H2O) interphase, which enables uniform Zn deposition and suppresses dendrite growth. In addition, this passivated interphase can prevent the electrolyte from direct contact with the Zn anode and inhibit side reactions, effectively improving the coulombic efficiency (CE) and the utilization of anodes. Therefore, the Zn-ZnO anodes in the symmetric cells display a low voltage hysteresis (46 mV) and long-term cycling stability at 5 mA cm–2, a lower Zn deposition barrier, and a high Zn plating/stripping CE of 99.7%. Importantly, the Zn-ZnO//MnO2 full cells show a fairly high specific capacity of 580 mAh g–1 and superior cycling stability with 154% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 50 mA g–1 and 105% capacity retention after 800 cycles at 500 mA g–1.

Abstract:For aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) with aqueous electrolyte and zinc metal anode, the advantages of high safety, low cost and environmental friendliness make them promising systems for energy storage. However, the problems of dendrite growth derived from non-uniform zinc deposition, hydrogen evolution and corrosion during cycling seriously affect the reliability of the battery and limit its service life. In this work, nanoporous coatings composed of niobium pentoxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) are designed to modify zinc anode to achieve uniform zinc deposition. The effect of Nb 2 O 5 coatings on the deposition behavior is analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and in situ optical microscopy, which show that Nb 2 O 5 coatings can regulate zinc ion deposition, uniformize the charge distribution, limit the irregular 2-dimensional (2D) diffusion of zinc ions, and inhibit the dendrite growth. Zn|Zn symmetric battery and Zn|Ti battery tests show that Nb 2 O 5 -coating Zn anodes (Nb 2 O 5 @Zn) can achieve lower polarization voltage, higher Coulombic efficiency and more excellent cycle stability even under an ultra-high current density of 20 mA cm −2 . With Nb 2 O 5 @Zn anodes, Zn//MnO 2 and Zn//V 2 O 5 batteries exhibit higher cycle stability and rate performance, verifying that the Nb 2 O 5 coating strategy is a facile and efficient way to long-life and deeply rechargeable AZIBs.

Free-Standing Electrode of Core–Shell-Structured NiO@Co 3 S 4 for High-Performance Hybrid Zn–Co/Air Batteries

Abstract:Hybrid Zn batteries, which couple two electrochemical reactions in one cell, attract research interests owing to the combination of high energy density and energy efficiency, and the electrode material is usually focused on metal oxides, such as nickel and cobalt oxides, which are restricted by the poor electric conductivity and limited cycling stability. In this work, a free-standing NiO@Co3S4 electrode with a core–shell structure is successfully fabricated and used in a hybrid Zn battery for the first time. As a result of the high electric conductivity of metal sulfides, synergistic effects between NiO and Co3S4, and unique core–shell structure, this electrode exhibits improved performance in both pseudocapacitance and oxygen electrocatalysis compared to the pristine Co3O4 electrode. A hybrid Zn–Co/air battery with this electrode delivers the discharge voltage plateaus of 1.75 and 1.28 V and charge voltage plateaus of 1.80 and 1.95 V at the current density of 1 mA cm–2, which correspond to the Zn–Co and Zn–air reactions, respectively. Moreover, it operates for 100 cycles at 2 mA cm–2 with stable voltages of over 200 h. This work fabricates a high-performance electrode for hybrid Zn batteries and provides a promising design strategy for electrochemical storage materials.

Abstract:Porous ZnMn2O4 microspheres were prepared via a facile co-precipitation method followed by calcination at various temperatures and evaluated as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The sample prepared at 600 degrees C outperformed the other samples in terms of electrochemical performance with high reversible capacity, high-rate capability, and excellent cycling performance. The capacity of the sample remained as high as 999 mAh g(-1) at a current rate of 100 mA g(-1) after 50 cycles- one of the best ever reported for ZnMn2O4-based materials. A high reversible capacity of 400 mAh g(-1) was retainable at a current density of 2000 mA g(-1) after 2500 cycles. A novel electrochemical reaction mechanism of ZnMn2O4 anodes was established and investigated at length. The Mn3O4 observed during the charge process was largely responsible for the enhanced performance, as confirmed by x- ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The relatively large surface area, abundant porosity, large ion exchange space, and strong mechanical stability of the porous connected 3D framework were responsible for the unique oxidation/ reduction Mn2+-> Mn3+ process we observed.
Free-Standing Electrode of Core–Shell-Structured NiO@Co3S4 for High-Performance Hybrid Zn–Co/Air Batteries

Abstract:Hybrid Zn batteries, which couple two electrochemical reactions in one cell, attract research interests owing to the combination of high energy density and energy efficiency, and the electrode material is usually focused on metal oxides, such as nickel and cobalt oxides, which are restricted by the poor electric conductivity and limited cycling stability. In this work, a free-standing NiO@Co3S4 electrode with a core-shell structure is successfully fabricated and used in a hybrid Zn battery for the first time. As a result of the high electric conductivity of metal sulfides, synergistic effects between NiO and Co3S4, and unique core-shell structure, this electrode exhibits improved performance in both pseudocapacitance and oxygen electrocatalysis compared to the pristine Co3S4 electrode. A hybrid Zn-Co/air battery with this electrode delivers the discharge voltage plateaus of 1.75 and 1.28 V and charge voltage plateaus of 1.80 and 1.95 V at the current density of 1 mA cm(-2), which correspond to the Zn-Co and Zn-air reactions, respectively. Moreover, it operates for 100 cycles at 2 mA cm(-2) with stable voltages of over 200 h. This work fabricates a high-performance electrode for hybrid Zn batteries and provides a promising design strategy for electrochemical storage materials.
Arrays of Hierarchical Zincophilic Nanorods with Trapping‐and‐Leveling Deposition for Ultrastable Zn Metal Anodes

Abstract:A novel core–shell nanorod array host is developed to stabilize the zinc anode. The inner zincophilic Cu5Zn8 alloy and hierarchical topological structure allow a trapping‐and‐leveling Zn deposition process to homogenize interfacial ionic fluxes and reduce local current densities. The array host circumvents the adverse hydrogen evolution reactions and dendrite growth, ultimately endowing the long‐term operation of zinc‐ion batteries. Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (ZIBs) are highly promising for large‐scale sustainable energy storage applications, but there remain serious problems such as Zn dendrites and side reactions that limit the cycling performance. Herein, arrays of core–shell nanorods on Cu foam are developed to stabilize zinc anodes, which have a hierarchical topological structure consisting of N‐doped carbon layers embedded with a zincophilic component of Cu5Zn8 alloy (Cu5Zn8@NC). It is found that the inner Cu5Zn8 alloys have minimized nucleation barriers and act as preferred nucleation sites, and the hierarchical arrays provide the protective layers to further accommodate the high‐capacity plating Zn, leading to a trapping‐and‐leveling process of Zn deposition. The as‐obtained Zn layers play an important role in homogenizing the interfacial ionic fluxes and reducing the local current densities. As a result, the optimized Cu5Zn8@NC host yields a superb Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% over 5000 plating/stripping cycles, and the corresponding symmetric cell delivers an ultralong dendrite‐free cycle life of 7000 h with a low overpotential of 16.5 mV at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2. The ZIB assembled with the zinc anode and a V2O5 cathode exhibits long‐term charging/discharging cycles as well, up to 89.2% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are received the extensive attention due to their high-safety, huge cost competitiveness, and eco-friendliness. However, they are still limited by advanced cathode materials in terms of cycle stability and energy density. Herein, hierarchical α-MnO 2 @La x Mn 1-x O 2-δ (α-MnO 2 @LMO) core–shell nanostructures are developed to improve the electrochemical performance of AZIBs. In this structure, the internal hollow nanotubes mechanically support the external La x Mn 1-x O 2-δ nanosheets, forming a porous, open, and robust electrode architecture. Benefiting from unique structure, the α-MnO 2 @LMO cathode exhibits good initial specific capacity (240 mAh g −1 ) and cyclic stability. Moreover, the α-MnO 2 @LMO cathode delivers a specific capacity of 115 mAh g −1 with 90% of the initial capacity after 1500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . The electrochemical dynamics test, charge–discharge mechanism study and phase and structure evolution analysis show that the formation of core–shell structure not only enhance the structural stability of MnO 2 , alleviate the dissolution of Mn, and improve the transport kinetics of Zn 2+ , but also inhibit the irreversible ZnMn 2 O 4 produced in the process of repeated H + and Zn 2+ co insertion/extraction. This study intends to provide an alternative method for the next generation cathode materials for AZIB.
