Abstract:In two experiments, we tested whether environmental self-identity and group-identity can be strengthened by manipulations at a personal and a group level; namely, reminding participants of their own/their group’s past pro-environmental behaviour, and providing feedback of them/their group being environmental-friendly. We also tested whether environmental self- and group-identity could, in turn, motivate actual food recycling behaviour (Study 1, N = 171) and pro-environmental intentions (Study 2, N = 243). As hypothesised, interventions targeting environmental self-identity motivated recycling and pro-environmental intentions via self-identity. In addition, we found partial support for our hypothesis that interventions targeting environmental group-identity also stimulated environmental outcomes via group-identity: this effect was less consistent. Interestingly, our findings showed that when we manipulated environmental group-identity only, environmental self-identity became stronger as well. No evidence supported an additive effect; that is, strengthening both environmental identities did not lead to stronger pro-environmental intentions compared to strengthening one of the identities. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
