Abstract:The clay-organic interactions in marine sediments and mudstones have long been concerned and play key roles in preservation of organic matter (OM). As chemically active mineral, smectite could transform into illite naturally, however, how this process affects stability and cycle of OM remains unclear. Here, we find that solid acidity varies greatly in terms of amount, type, and strength during illitization. The amount and strength of Brønsted (B) acid sites are enhanced markedly and interlayer space remains expandable in randomly interstratified illite/smectite, which enables immediate contact of active acid sites and adsorbed OM. In this case, the promotion of clay minerals on OM evolution would be greatly enhanced. Different from the traditional views on the effects of clay-OM interactions on organic carbon cycle, which include adsorptive protection and desorption, a new notion of clay mineral reactor is proposed which allows in-situ decomposition or degradation of OM.
