Abstract:Sustainable processes for purifying water, capturing carbon, producing biofuels, operating fuel cells, and performing energy-efficient industrial separations will require next-generation membranes. Solvent-less fabrication for membranes not only eliminates potential environmental issues with organic solvents, but also solves the swelling problems that occur with delicate polymer substrates. Furthermore, the activation procedures often required for synthesizing microporous materials such as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be reduced when solvent-less vapor-phase approaches are employed. This perspective covers several vacuum deposition processes, including initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD), initiated plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (iPECVD), solvent-less vapor deposition followed by in situ polymerization (SLIP), atomic layer deposition (ALD), and molecular layer deposition (MLD). These solvent-less vapor-phase methods are powerful in creating ultrathin selective layers for thin-film composite membranes and advantageous in conformally coating nanoscale pores for the precise modification of pore size and internal functionalities. The resulting membranes have shown promising performance for gas separation, nanofiltration, desalination, and water/oil separation. Further development of novel membrane materials and the scaling up of high-throughput reactors for solvent-less vapor-phase processes are necessary in order to make a real impact on the chemical industry in the future.

Abstract:Polymeric membranes have been applied in industrial gas separations for decades. Competing technologies, such as cryogenic distillation and sorption processes, require the gases to be either condensed or thermally regenerated from the sorbents. In contrast, membrane gas separation does not involve phase transition, representing the potential for a more energy efficient and eco-friendly separation process. However, the overall energy consumption by membrane gas separation is highly dependent on the quality of the membrane employed for the separation process. With the goal of reducing the energy input needed for creating the transmembrane pressure difference, numerous bulk polymers have been investigated. However, less effort has been devoted to processing polymers into ultrathin membranes and investigating their gas permeation properties, which can be quite different from their bulk counterparts. This review summarizes recent advances in fabricating ultrathin gas-selective polymeric membranes. Several classes of ultrathin polymeric membranes are highlighted: microporous polymers, facilitated transport polymeric membranes, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposited polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs), polyamides and other commercial polymers. The application of gas-selective polymeric membranes beyond gas separation is also included as a meaningful extension to this review.

Abstract:Membrane separation using hollow fiber membrane has become one of the emerging technologies which underwent rapid development for various applications during the past few decades. A further improvement and development of the membrane technology is required for satisfying the current needs of environmental protection, rational use of resources and special separation under harsh conditions. A new solvent-free or solvent-poor process alternative may have great potential to compete with traditional processes. In this regard, sustainable processes and environment-friendly preparation techniques have been developed in making high-performance hollow fiber membranes recently. This article provides an overview of recent progresses on common preparation method of polymeric hollow fiber membranes from the view of environmental protection and health safety. Recent advances in fabrication techniques of hollow fiber membranes from the green and sustainable perspective, especially by melt/solution integrated homogeneous-reinforcement method, homogeneous braid reinforced hollow fiber membrane, melt spinning-stretching interfacial phase separation method, and nanofibers-covered hollow fiber membrane via continuous electrospinning have been introduced in detail. The review ends with several recommendations for future research and development on hollow fiber membranes.

Abstract:Chemical separation technologies such as water purification , gas separation, and solvent recovery have increasingly adopted membrane-based methods for their efficiency and adaptability. However, the cost and environmental consequences of traditional membrane synthesis, including the use of fossil-based polymers and toxic solvents are hindering their scaleup and large-scale adoption. Recognizing this, efforts to replace polymers with sustainable biopolymers and recycle/upcycle waste polymers are underway. Furthermore, the need to replace toxic solvents, such as hexane, with green alternatives, like deep eutectic solvents (DES), is being realized. Although the efficacy of using sustainable alternatives to membrane materials are reviewed in some studies, a comprehensive review that unifies these approaches has been lacking. This review aims to fill this gap by presenting a detailed analysis of sustainable membrane technologies, examining the use of bio-based polymers, green solvents, recycled waste materials, and natural additives. The work emphasizes the vast application potential of these environmentally responsible alternatives across various separation processes and highlights innovative techniques for waste valorization in membrane synthesis. While showcasing prospects, the review also identifies persistent challenges, particularly the dependency on fossil-based inputs. By presenting an integrated perspective on the development and implementation of green membranes, this study is expected to guide future research in the field and contribute to promoting the circular economy and achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract:Solute purification, solvent recovery, solvent separation in organic solvents are more and more widely used in the chemical industries, pharmaceuticals and food processing. Fast and efficient separations can be realized using membrane separation technology. Materials with strong organic solvent resistance for membrane preparation have attracted growing research interest and have been regarded as a necessary approach for various environmental and energy-related separations. Kinds of novel polymers, metal/covalent-organic framework, carbon materials, polymers of intrinsic microporosity and conjugated microporous polymers provide possibilities and solutions to prepare organic solvent resistant membranes. In view of the tremendous progress made over the past few years, it is valuable to summarize the recent developments timely and systematically in this multidisciplinary field, from which researchers can forecast trends in the future. In this review, we firstly introduced advanced membrane separation technologies, including pervaporation, organic solvent ultrafiltration, organic solvent nanofiltration, organic solvent reverse osmosis and organic solvent forward osmosis. Then we highlighted novel membrane materials and preparations in recent years and introduced the applications in the dyes separation, petroleum industry, food processing, pharmaceuticals, separation of organic solvents and wastewater treatment. Lastly, some unsolved problems and challenges at the scientific and technical level related to perspectives are discussed, prompting the further development of next-generation organic solvent resistant membranes.

Abstract:When considering energy consumption and environmental issues, solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) based on polymeric materials emerges as a process for substituting conventional separation processes of organic solutions, such as distillation, which consume high amounts of energy. Because SRNF does not involve phase transition, this process can potentially decrease the energy consumption and solvent waste and increase the yield of active components. Such improvements could significantly benefit a number of fields, such as pharmaceutical manufacturing and catalysis recovery, among others. Therefore, SRNF has gained a lot of attention since the recent introduction of solvent-stable polymeric materials in the manufacture of nanofiltration membranes. The membrane materials and the membrane structures depending on the fabrication methods determine the separation performance of polymeric SRNF membranes. Therefore, this article gives a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-art technologies of generating membrane materials and corresponding fabrication methods for SRNF membranes made from polymeric materials expected to provide the most benefit. The transport mechanisms and the corresponding models of SRNF membranes in organic media are also reviewed to better understand the mass transfer process. Various SRNF applications, such as in pharmaceutical and catalyst, among others, are also discussed. Finally, the difficulties and future research directions to overcome the challenges faced by SRNF processes are proposed. C

Abstract:Membrane-based liquid filtration systems are key process engineering platforms for the chemical industry, particularly for solvent intensive processes. While they are used in a large scale for desalination, in water treatment, and in the food industry, polymeric membranes are mostly fabricated from solutions in organic solvents with concerning toxicity. Herein, we report a green fabrication method using decanoic acid as an alternative green solvent. The low vapor pressure, relative to common organic solvents, reduces the toxicity and the harm to the environment. The decanoic acid was used to dissolve trimesoyl chloride and reacted with polyethylenimine in the aqueous solution via an interfacial polymer reaction to produce a thin film composite membrane. The resultant membrane had high permeances for water (∼52 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) and organic solvents (16 to 124 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) and selectivity in the nanofiltration range. Therefore, our method of membrane preparation can offer an excellent and green platform for molecular separations for the chemical and biochemistry industry.Green fabrication method using decanoic acid as an alternative green solvent for thin-film composite membrane via interfacial reaction.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The development of polymer materials and polymer membrane fabrication techniques in recent years greatly elevates the importance and feasibility of organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) technology, while challenges from different perspectives still hinder the wider applications of polymer based OSN membranes. This article reviews the OSN membrane research specifically from the perspective of polymer membrane materials, starting by recapping the recent progress of polymer based integrally skinned asymmetric (ISA) and thin film composite (TFC) OSN membranes. Comparing to commercially available polyimide ISA membranes and polyamide TFC membranes, multiple categories of emerging polymer materials result in membranes with much improved permselectivity for highly efficient molecular separation. In view of adopting OSN membranes for engineering applications, this review also summarizes some key challenges unique to polymer membranes including material swelling, physical aging and membrane compaction, and recent efforts to overcome them. The future research direction and application prospects of polymer OSN membranes are briefly discussed in the latter part of the article, noting that improved membrane formation control and crosslinking strategies, and the development of emerging polymer membrane materials is at high necessity to break through the application constraints of OSN in terms of permselectivity and performance stability.

Abstract:Synthetic polymer membranes are widely used in many applications, including, among others, water purification, protein separation, and medicine. However, the use of existing polymer membranes faces major challenges, such as the trade-off between permeability and selectivity, membrane fouling, and poor mechanical strength. To address these problems the authors have focused their research on surface/interfacial tailoring and the structure-property relationship of polymer membranes used in liquid separation systems. Progress has been made as follows: (1) a methodology for membrane surface functionalization and nanofiltration (NF) membrane preparation based on mussel-inspired catecholic chemistry was proposed and established; (2) a class of mechanically robust and environmentally-responsive composite membranes with hydrogel pore-filled in rigid macroporous supports was designed and developed; (3) a methodology for surface tailoring and antifouling modification of polymer membranes based on amphiphilic copolymers was created and the scientific implications for amphiphilic polymer membranes elaborated; (4) an adsorption membrane with both filtration and adsorption functions was designed and developed to achieve rapid removal of trace micropollutants, including heavy metal ions, organic dyes, plasticizer, antibiotics, and others. This mini-review briefly summarizes this work.

Abstract:Herein, this paper details a comprehensive review on the biopolymeric membrane applications in micropollutants’ removal from wastewater. As such, the implications of utilising non-biodegradable membrane materials are outlined. In comparison, considerations on the concept of utilising nanostructured biodegradable polymeric membranes are also outlined. Such biodegradable polymers under considerations include biopolymers-derived cellulose and carrageenan. The advantages of these biopolymer materials include renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness when compared to non-biodegradable polymers. The modifications of the biopolymeric membranes were also deliberated in detail. This included the utilisation of cellulose as matrix support for nanomaterials. Furthermore, attention towards the recent advances on using nanofillers towards the stabilisation and enhancement of biopolymeric membrane performances towards organic contaminants removal. It was noted that most of the biopolymeric membrane applications focused on organic dyes (methyl blue, Congo red, azo dyes), crude oil, hexane, and pharmaceutical chemicals such as tetracycline. However, more studies should be dedicated towards emerging pollutants such as micropollutants. The biopolymeric membrane performances such as rejection capabilities, fouling resistance, and water permeability properties were also outlined.

Interfacial Polymerization Using Biobased Solvents and Their Application As Desalination and Organic Solvent Nanofiltration Membranes

Abstract:Thin-film composite membranes are widely regarded as more sustainable technologies for desalination and organic solvent nanofiltration. However, the process of fabricating these membranes is not. This is because nhexane, a toxic and hazardous solvent, or other fossil-derived oily solvents are used as the organic phase to fabricate polyamide selective layers of such membranes. Here we replaced fossil-derived solvents with benign, bio-renewable solvents that possess better environmental, health and safety metrics - cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF). A fully aromatic polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membrane fabricated via CPME demonstrated a higher NaCl rejection (97.8%), while the same membrane fabricated using n-hexane only presented 92.4% rejection. Meanwhile a semi-aromatic polyamide TFC membrane fabricated with 2-MeTHF showed an ethanol permeance of 9.87 L m- 2 h-1 bar-1 and 97.1% RB rejection, 3.7-fold higher than the TFC fabricated using n-hexane. This demonstrated the feasibility and advantages of replacing toxic and hazardous solvents that have long been the standard solvents used in membrane fabrication, with benign alternatives. This work could potentially improve the sustainability of membrane fabrication.

Abstract:Globally, environmental challenges have been recognised as a matter of concern. Among these challenges are the reduced availability and quality of drinking water, and greenhouse gases that give rise to change in climate by entrapping heat, which result in respirational illness from smog and air pollution. Globally, the rate of demand for the use of freshwater has outgrown the rate of population increase; as the rapid growth in town and cities place a huge pressure on neighbouring water resources. Besides, the rapid growth in anthropogenic activities, such as the generation of energy and its conveyance, release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, warming the planet. Polymer nanocomposite has played a significant role in finding solutions to current environmental problems. It has found interest due to its high potential for the reduction of gas emission, and elimination of pollutants, heavy metals, dyes, and oil in wastewater. The revolution of integrating developed novel nanomaterials such as nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers and activated carbon, in polymers, have instigated revitalizing and favourable inventive nanotechnologies for the treatment of wastewater and gas separation. This review discusses the effective employment of polymer nanocomposites for environmental utilizations. Polymer nanocomposite membranes for wastewater treatment and gas separation were reviewed together with their mechanisms. The use of polymer nanocomposites as an adsorbent for toxic metals ions removal and an adsorbent for dye removal were also discussed, together with the mechanism of the adsorption process. Patents in the utilization of innovative polymeric nanocomposite membranes for environmental utilizations were discussed.

Abstract:Over the past decades, much attention has been paid to develope novel approaches towards water treatment, in particular the membrane filtration, to deal with the severe environmental crisis. One of the research foci is the organic-inorganic composite membranes for their advantages from both polymers and inorganics. In this review, we focus on the composite porous membranes and outline the advances in this field. In recent years, numerous of methods have been developed to fabricate such membranes, including blending, in situ generation, surface modification, atomic layer deposition, and biomineralization. The membranes can be categorized into two models according to the distribution of inorganics in the membrane: the embedding model and enveloping model. In addition, we summarize the practical applications of organic-inorganic composite membranes in antifouling and anti-bacterial uses, oil/water separation, catalysis, absorption, battery separator and enzyme immobilization. We suggest the "enveloping model" a better choice to construct the novel organic-inorganic composite membranes with high performance for its high surface mineral coverage.
A novel green solvent alternative for polymeric membrane preparation via nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS)

Abstract:The membrane market has grown rapidly over the past several decades, supported by continuous improvements in membrane performance, module and process design, and fouling control. However, such growth will be unsustainable with current membrane fabrication methods that employ significant amounts of toxic solvents (e.g., N-methylpyrrolidone, dimethylacetamide, and dimethylformamide), thereby producing billions of liters of contaminated wastewater each year. A possible solution is to identify greener alternatives with appropriate properties that are compatible with conventional polymers. In this work, we employed a novel green solvent, Rhodiasolv PolarClean®, that is less toxic than current solvents and eco-friendly, while exhibiting the necessary properties to be employed as a solvent for membrane preparation via the nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Rhodiasolv PolarClean® has been successfully applied to membrane preparation for water desalination and reclamation by ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) with conventional polymers, including polysulfone (PSF), polyethersulfone (PES), and cellulose acetate (CA). The UF membranes prepared from PES/Pluronic F127 and PSF/polyvinylpyrrolidone exhibited pure water permeabilities greater than 314.5 ± 57.8 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and tensile strength 3.78 ± 0.12 MPa with BSA rejection of 98.1 ± 0.4%. Cellulose acetate membrane used for NF applications demonstrated pure water permeability of 1.5 ± 0.25 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 with NaCl and MgCl2 rejection of 85.1 ± 5.7% and 93.2 ± 4.7%, respectively. The performance of the prepared membranes was competitive with current state-of-the-art membranes across all applications, indicating immediate applicability to improving the sustainability of membrane fabrication processes.

Abstract:Fluoropolymers usually have high mechanical strength and excellent chemical stability and thus have been employed for the last several decades as materials for membrane separation processes, typically in water purification and energy applications such as microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), fuel cells, battery separators, etc. Recently, new membrane operations such as membrane distillation (MD), membrane crystallization (MCr), membrane emulsification (ME) and membrane contactors (MC) have become popular. A much stronger understanding of the basic properties of the materials utilized is required for adopting the appropriate membrane and for finding the relationship among material properties, membrane morphology and the transport phenomena in the membranes. This review presents the structures and properties of fluoropolymers for membranes, the preparation and modification methods of fluoropolymer membranes, and their applications. Recent progress in the development of novel fluoropolymers for membranes and their fabrication and modification methods are reported as well.

Abstract:Large-scale membrane fabrication currently relies on the use of traditional solvents, such as N,N-dimethylacetamide, 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, and dimethylformamide. These solvents are toxic, slowly biodegradable, and combustible, posing risks to human health and the environment, and requiring careful safety procedures. Replacing traditional solvents with green solvents while maintaining or improving the membrane performance is a challenging task at the forefront of research and development in the field of membrane technology. We employed a novel green solvent, methyl-5-(dimethylamino)-2-methyl-5-oxopentanoate (Rhodiasolv PolarClean), to prepare high-performance poly(vinyl chloride) ultrafiltration membranes. This green solvent was used to completely replace toxic solvents during membrane fabrication, for the first time. The effects of polymer concentration, addition of amphiphilic copolymer poly(vinyl chloride)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate concentration, and use of a nonwoven polyethylene terephthalate fabric as support layer were investigated systematically. The membrane fabricated with 8% PVC, 5% PVC-g-PEGMA, and nonwoven PET fabrics as support layer showed the best overall performance, presenting small and narrowly distributed membrane pores, high surface porosity, smooth surface, ultrahigh pure water permeability coefficients of >5000 L m–2 h–1 bar–1, high sodium alginate rejection of nearly 98%, and flux recovery ratio of 57%. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using green solvent to increase the sustainability and effectiveness of membrane processes.

Abstract:The vast majority of industrial chemical synthesis occurs in organic solution. Solute concentration and solvent recovery consume ~50% of the energy required to produce chemicals and pose problems that are as relevant as the synthesis process itself. Separation and purification processes often involve a phase change and, as such, they are highly energy-intensive. However, novel, energy-efficient technologies based on polymer membranes are emerging as a viable alternative to thermal processes. Despite organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) could revolutionize the chemical, petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical industry, its development is still in its infancy for two reasons: (i) the lack of fundamental knowledge of elemental transport phenomena in OSN membranes, and (ii) the instability of traditional polymer materials in chemically challenging environments. While the latter issue has been partially solved, the former was not addressed at all. Moreover, the few data available about solute and solvent transport in OSN membranes are often interpreted using inappropriate theoretical tools, which contributes to the spread of misleading conclusions in the literature. In this review we provide the state of the art of organic solvent nanofiltration using polymeric membranes. First, theoretical models useful to interpret experimental data are discussed and some misleading conclusions commonly reported in the literature are highlighted. Then, currently available materials are reviewed. Finally, materials that could revolutionize OSN in the future are identified. Among the possible applications of OSN, isomers separation could open a new era in chemical engineering and polymer science in the years to come.

Abstract:Conventional polymers, endowed with specific functionalities, are extensively utilized for filtering and extracting a diverse set of chemicals, notably metals, from solutions. The main structure of a polymer is an integral part for designing an efficient separating system. However, its chemical functionality further contributes to the selectivity, fabrication process, and resulting product morphology. One example would be a membrane that can be employed to selectively remove a targeted metal ion or chemical from a solution, leaving behind the useful components of the solution. Such membranes or products are highly sought after for purifying polluted water contaminated with toxic and heavy metals. An efficient water-purifying membrane must fulfill several requirements, including a specific morphology attained by the material with a specific chemical functionality and facile fabrication for integration into a purifying module Therefore, the selection of an appropriate polymer and its functionalization become crucial and determining steps. This review highlights the attempts made in functionalizing various polymers (including natural ones) or copolymers with chemical groups decisive for membranes to act as water purifiers. Among these recently developed membrane systems, some of the materials incorporating other macromolecules, e.g., MOFs, COFs, and graphene, have displayed their competence for water treatment. Furthermore, it also summarizes the self-assembly and resulting morphology of the membrane materials as critical for driving the purification mechanism. This comprehensive overview aims to provide readers with a concise and conclusive understanding of these materials for water purification, as well as elucidating further perspectives and challenges.
