Abstract:The applications of carbon-based supercapacitors have been limited by their low energy storage density owing to their limited active storage sites. To overcome this limitation, amine-enriched porous carbon electrodes have been fabricated by the electrostatic fusion of amine-functionalized single-crystalline graphene quantum dots (GQDs) within conductive, vertically ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays as the collectors. The carbon films deliver ultrahigh specific capacitance (400-595 F g(-1)) even beyond the theoretical upper limit of single-layer graphene by inducing a high concentration of active amine moieties at edge. Symmetrical GQD supercapacitors in H2SO4 electrolyte offer energy density up to 21.8 Wh kg(-1) and retain 90% of the initial capacitance after 10000 cyclic voltammetry tests. The results show that amine-enriched GQDs can function as a new kind of highly active, solution-processable, and low-cost pseudocapacitive materials applicable to high-performance supercapacitors. Sprinkling MnFe2O4 Quantum Dots on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Sheets: the Formation Mechanism and Application for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs)/graphene composites are interesting as promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because they can well integrate the complementary features of QDs and graphene. Herein, we demonstrate a MnFe2O4 QDs/nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) material prepared by a controllable solvothermal synthesis, in which ultra-small MnFe2O4 QDs are uniformly anchored on NG surfaces. First-principles calculations elucidate that the oxygen-containing groups of graphene oxide play a crucial role in generating such a structure, and a ferrite octahedral skeleton is firstly formed followed by Mn atom insertion. Powdery MnFe2O4 QDs/NG exhibits a high specific capacitance of 517 F g(-2) within a negative potential window (-1 approximate to 0 V) in KOH electrolyte. When the lower cut off voltage is extended to -1.2 V, the specific capacitance can be increased to 905 F g(-1). And the condensed MnFe2O4 QDs@NG electrode (forming a similar structure to pitaya slices) with an astonishing loading mass of 18 mg cm(-2) can achieve high areal and volumetric capacitances (5.3 F cm(-2) and 277.6 F cm(-3)). Moreover, carbon encapsulation is favorable for the improvement of rate and cycling performance, allowing a satisfactory capacitance of 150 F g(-1) even at 200 A g(-1) as well as a superior lifetime up to 65000 cycles. These results make such materials competitive with supercapacitor electrodes and may speed up the development of QD-based electrodes for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Conventional graphene powder materials exhibit ultralow density characteristics, severely restricting their practical application. For addressing this issue, we propose a facile but efficient strategy for optimization of the graphene packing structure. Through the electrostatic orientation effect of K+ ions, a highly regular and compact graphene assembly with a high density is fabricated, at the same time, interlayer micropores are preserved due to the separation effect of K+ ions intercalated between graphene layers, optimizing the delicate balance between the dense and porous characteristics of graphene. Besides, good wettability to electrolytes and Faradaic pseudo-capacitance further improve the capacitive performances. Accordingly, a volumetric capacitance as high as 508 F cm(-3) is achieved for the produced graphene film, which is the highest value for carbon-based electrode materials in aqueous electrolytes to date. Furthermore, the unique packing structure is retained for the graphene assembly in a powder form, and the symmetric two-electrode supercapacitors based on the produced graphene powder material with a mass loading density of 6-8 mg cm(-2), close to the value of commercial supercapacitors, exhibit a good high-rate capability and a volumetric energy density as high as 30.2 Wh L-1.

Abstract:Graphene was successfully prepared using LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene) plastic particles as carbon source via a CVD process, and then combined with MnO2/Co3O4 composite prefabricated in our experiment to test the electrochemical performance for supercapacitors. MnO2/Co3O4 has the largest CV area and suggests a larger capacitance potential. The discharge curve of MnO2/Co3O4 is close to that of MnO2, indicating that the capacitance of MnO2/Co3O4 is dominated by MnO2, and the discharge of Graphene/MnO2/Co3O4 is slow at high voltage. The addition of graphene improves specific capacitance of MnO2/Co3O4 electrode materials, reaching 502.3 F/g at current density of 1 A/g. After 1000 charge/discharge cycles, the capacitance of all the materials synthesized in this study remains over 94.7% at the current density of 10 A/g, suggesting great potential for supercapacitors and one can choose the proper material according to various applications. Abstract:A solvothermal method was used to synthesize functionalized graphene, which exhibits an ultrahigh capacitance. This solvothermal method allows a fine control of the density of functionalities on graphene surface. The structure of resulting functionalized graphene is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), FTIR and Raman. Pseudocapacitance is provided by functionalities on graphene surface, such as carboxyl, carbonyl and hydroxyl. The significance of these functional also includes improving the wetting properties of electrode material, especially for supercapacitors using aqueous electrolyte. However, there is a penalty for functionalities since these oxygen-containing functional groups will disrupt the π-conjugated system and lower the electrical conductivity. Therefore for functionalized graphene as supercapacitor, a tradeoff exists between the high psudeocapacitance and low conductivity, both are arising from the surface functionalities. Our systematic study shows a successful control of the density of functionalities, which is essential to achieve high performance of graphene-based supercapacitors. The capacitance of graphene is measured in a three electrode system using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charging/discharging techniques. At a proper reduction condition, a high capacity of 276 F/g was achieved at a discharging current of 0.1 A/g in H 2 SO 4 solutions. The superior capacitive performance of functionalized graphene demonstrates the importance of surface property engineering, which will greatly promote the study and application of graphene-based supercapacitors.

Abstract:This work presents a new class of porous graphene particles with a three-dimensional microscale network and an ultrahigh specific surface area (2590 m2 g-1), which is obtained by the KOH activation of a compact graphene hydrogel. As supercapacitor electrodes, such porous graphene particles show high compressibility and little capacitance loss when subjected to a compressive force up to 40 MPa, yielding an excellent volumetric performance with an ionic liquid electrolyte. Such carbon materials show great promise for applications needing high volumetric energy. © 2015 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Abstract:Graphene has a high specific surface area and high electrical conductivity, and its addition to activated carbon electrodes should theoretically significantly improve the energy storage performance of supercapacitors. Unfortunately, such an ideal outcome is seldom verified in practical commercial supercapacitor design and production. In this paper, the oxygen-containing functional groups in graphene/activated carbon hybrids, which are prone to induce side reactions, are removed in the material synthesis stage by a special process design, and electrodes with high densities and low internal resistances are prepared by a dry process. On this basis, a carbon-coated aluminum foil collector with a full tab structure is designed and assembled with graphene/activated carbon hybrid electrodes to form a commercial supercapacitor in cylindrical configuration. The experimental tests confirmed that such supercapacitors have high capacity density, power density, low internal resistance (about 0.06 mΩ), good high-current charging/discharging characteristics, and a long lifetime, with more than 80% capacity retention after 10 W cycles.

Abstract:Hybrid electrode materials are key for electrochemical performances of supercapacitors. In this work, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) is grown on graphene by a microwave synthetic method, which is simple, rapid, energy-saving and efficient. Benefiting from the microwave synthetic method, uniform V2O5 nanoparticles with an approximately size of 20 nm are evenly dispersed on graphene. The resultant V2O5/graphene composites are assembled into symmetrical supercapacitors, exhibiting specific capacitances of 673.2 and 474.6 F g−1 at 1 and 10 A g−1, respectively, and 96.8% of capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 1 A g−1. Additionally, the assembled devices show outstanding energy density and power density characteristics (46.8 Wh kg−1 at 499.4 W kg−1 and 32.9 Wh kg−1 at 4746.0 W kg−1), which are superior than many similar devices. Furthermore, capacitive performances of V2O5/graphene composites with five different component ratios are thoroughly investigated and the charge storage mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:A series of graphene oxide (GO)/lanthanum titanate (La2Ti2O7, LTO) fiber composites were prepared through a hydrothermal method. The LTO fibers were homogeneously dispersed between the GO sheets. The structure and micromorphology of the GO/LTO composites were systematically studied. The composite exhibited a high specific capacitance of 900.6 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1) in the 1 M H2SO4 and 10 wt % sucrose aqueous solution as the electrolyte. With the extended potential window of 1.8 V, the fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor device delivered a maximum energy density of 94.0 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 750.1 W kg(-1). The GO/LTO composites could be promising materials for energy storage.

Abstract:The variation of oxygen functional groups (OFGs) is extremely complicated during the thermal treatment of graphene oxide (GO). Selectively improving the content of electrochemically active OFGs through multi-step thermal treatment is a promising strategy to enhance the charge storage capability of graphene-based super-capacitor electrodes. In this work, a two-step thermal treatment method was used to produce reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with selectively increasing the content of electrochemically active quinone-type carbonyl groups ((CO)-O-=). The first step is thermal reduction at 500 degrees C in Ar atmosphere, during which GO is exfoliated into separated sheets with porous structure and larger surface area; the second step is air oxidation at 400 degrees C, which facilitates the selective formation of quinone-type (CO)-O-= groups and enhances the mesoporous fraction. Due to the pseudocapacitive behavior of quinone-type (CO)-O-= groups and low ion diffusion resistance, the electrode prepared by RGO exhibits a high specific capacitance of 303 F g(-1) at 0.2 A g(-1) with excellent rate capability (202 F g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and notable cycling performance (similar to 116% capacitance retention after 1500 cycling at 1 A g(-1)). The present work proposed a facile and environmentally friendly two-step thermal treatment strategy in effectively controlling the surface property and microstructure of graphene materials, which has significant implications for mass producing graphene materials for supercapacitor electrodes.

Abstract:Graphene is a type of promising electrode material for high-energy and high-power density supercapacitors, but its electrochemical performance is greatly limited by the restacking problem. In this work, we reported a facile approach to synthesis graphene with chemically bonded vanadium oxide (VOx) nanoparticles and demonstrated that chemically-bonded VOx nanoparticles can effectively prevent the graphene sheets from restacking together and hence improve the electrochemical performance. The capacitance of VOx-bonded graphene increases to 272 F/g compared to 183 F/g of pristine graphene in 1 M H3PO4 aqueous electrolyte at 2 A/g. The VOx-bonded graphene also showed improved rate capability in both H3PO4 and ionic liquid electrolytes. The capacitance retention increases to 54.5% from 28.5% at 100 A/g (compare to 2 A/g) in H3PO4 and increases to 65.1% from 46.3% at 2 A/g (compare to 0.2 A/g) in neat ionic liquid. A high energy density of 84.4 Wh/kg is obtained within the voltage window of 4 V in ionic liquid. Even at a high-power density of 1000 W/kg, the VOx-bonded graphene shows a high energy density of 47.3 Wh/kg.

Abstract:To maximize the performance of a supercapacitor at a device level, it is essential to increase the volumetric capacitance of electrodes and decrease the fraction of inactive components. However, it is still a challenge to achieve these two goals. Here, we prepared surface-oxidized multi-layer graphene (SMG) by a facile electrochemical method. The unique thickness and oxygen groups facilitate the balance of the porosity and density and benefit the preparation of free-standing graphene electrodes. The preparation method of free-standing SMG electrode exhibits all-sided superiorities, including simple, environmental, energy-saving, high-stability, etc. Furthermore, SMG can achieve a high capacitance of 217.6 F cm −3 and landmark energy density of 120.27 Wh L −1 , which provides a potential perspective for practical applications in energy storage.

Abstract:A hydrothermal method assisted with freeze drying process was adopted to form composite supercapacitor materials of metastable vanadium dioxide [VO2(B)] nanobelts on reduced graphene oxide (RG) layers. The VO2(B) nanobelts were well dispersed on the graphene layers as verified by scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscope. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge measurements were adopted to investigate the electrochemical properties of VO2(B)/RG composites in 1.0 M Na2SO4 aqueous solution. The VO2(B)/RG composites delivered better specific capacitance and superior rate capability in comparison with the pure VO2(B). The initial specific capacitance of the composites reached 290.4 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and maintained 82.3 % of the initial value after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1, 37.9 % higher than the pure VO2(B). Therefore, our results suggest that graphene greatly enhances the electrochemical performance of VO2(B) and VO2(B)/RG composite is a potential material for supercapacitor.

Abstract:Graphene were prepared by simple redox method using graphite as raw materials. Supercapacitors were fabricated using the as-prepared graphene as electrode in organic electrolyte. The phase and morphology were characterized by XRD and SEM methods. The performance of supercapacitors were analyzed using galvanostatic charging and discharging testing, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that graphene-based supercapacitors had larger values of specific capacitance than that of the natural graphite-based ones. The specific capacitance was 45.5 F/g (rentention rate at 85.5%) after 888 charging and discharging cycles at the current density of 200 mA/g between the voltage from 1.25 to 2.5 V. The graphene-based supercapacitors have a good charge-discharge cycle performance.
