Abstract:A novel type of magnetic porous carbonaceous polymeric material, CTF/Fe2O3 composite (CTF=covalent triazine-based framework), has been synthesized by a facile microwave-enhanced high-temperature ionothermal method. By selecting ZnCl2 as a reaction medium and the Lewis acid catalyst, and choosing FeCl3·6H2O as an iron oxide precursor, a series of CTF/Fe2O3 composites with different γ-Fe2O3 contents has been prepared in 60min. The resulting samples were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibration sample magnetometer (VSM), and N2 sorption–desorption isotherms. The obtained CTF/Fe2O3 composites exhibit high surface areas (930–1149m2g−1), and their saturation magnetizations at 300K vary from 1.1 to 5.9emug−1, depending respectively on different Fe2O3 contents (6.43–12.43wt%) in the CTF/Fe2O3 composites. The CTF/Fe2O3 composites were applied to remove organic dye from aqueous solution by selecting methyl orange as a model molecule, and both high adsorption capacity (291mgg−1, corresponding to 0.889mmolg−1) and fast adsorption kinetics (kads=4.31m2mg−1min−1) were observed.

Abstract:The shaping of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from non-processible powder forms into applicable architectures with additional functionality remains a challenge. Using pre-electrospun polymer fibers as a sacrificial template, herein, we report a green synthesis of an architecture in the form of COF hollow fibers with an inner layer of peroxidase-like iron oxide nanoparticles as a catalytic material. When compared to peroxidase-like pristine iron oxide nanoparticles, these COF hollow fibers demonstrate higher catalytic breakdown of crystal violet due to their peroxidase-like activity via advanced oxidation process. Furthermore, as a potential adsorbent, hollow COF fibers exhibit significantly effective adsorption capacity and removal efficiency of organic solvent and oil from water. Because of their magnetic nature, COF hollow fibers can be easily recovered and have exhibited high recycling stability for both catalytic dye degradation and organic solvent removal from water.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are a new type of carbonaceous polymeric material, have attracted great interest because of their large surface area and high chemical and thermal stability. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work has reported the use of magnetic COFs as adsorbents for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to enrich and determine environmental pollutants. This work aims to investigate the feasibility of using covalent triazine-based framework (CTF)/Fe2O3 composites as MSPE adsorbents to enrich and analyze perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) at trace levels in water samples. Under the optimal conditions, the method developed exhibited low limits of detection (0.62–1.39 ng·L-1), a wide linear range (5–4000 ng L-1), good repeatability (1.12–9.71%), and good reproducibility (2.45–7.74%). The new method was successfully used to determine PFCs in actual environmental water samples. MSPE based on CTF/Fe2O3 composites exhibits potential for analysis of PFCs at trace levels in environmental water samples.
Selective and Fast Adsorption of Perfluorooctanesulfonate from Wastewater by Magnetic Fluorinated Vermiculite.

Abstract:A novel magnetic fluorinated adsorbent with selective and fast adsorption of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was synthesized via a simple ball milling of Fe3O4 and vermiculite loaded with a cationic fluorinated surfactant. The loaded Fe3O4 nanoparticles increased the dispersibility of fluorinated vermiculite (F-VT) in water and allowed the magnetic separability. The nanosized Fe3O4 was homogeneously embedded into the adsorbent surfaces, improving the hydrophilicity of F-VT external surface, and this hybrid adsorbent still kept the hydrophobic fluorinated interlayer structure. With this unique property, Fe3O4-loaded F-VT has very fast and selective adsorption for PFOS in the presence of other compounds, due to the fluorophilicity of C-F chains intercalated in the adsorbent interlayers. This novel adsorbent has a high sorption capacity for PFOS, exhibiting PFOS removal from fire-fighting foam wastewater that is much higher than that of powdered activated carbon and resin due to its high selectivity for PFOS. The used Fe3O4-loaded F-VT was successfully regenerated by methanol and reused five times without reduction in PFOS removal and magnetic performance. The Fe3O4-loaded F-VT demonstrates promising application for PFOS removal from real wastewater.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely distributed in water and pose a potential threat to ecological security and environmental health, and PFAS removal from water is becoming an urgent need. In this study, we prepared the novel covalent organic frameworks (COFs) through structural design and mixed edges combination with high adsorption selectivity and capacity for PFAS. The COFs were designed with appropriate pore size, and the edge of COFs was replaced with different ratios of fluorinated edge and quaternary ammonium edge to create ideal fluorinated quaternary ammonium COFs. The prepared COFs had high adsorption capacity of 300.2 & mu;mol/g and 879.8 & mu;mol/g for PFHxS and PFOS, respectively, and exhibited a relatively stable adsorption performance at different solution pH, ionic strength and humic acid concentrations. More significantly, the fluorinated quaternary ammonium COFs can selectively adsorb PFAS in the presence of various hydrocarbons with similar structures, and efficiently remove multiple PFAS from actual electroplating wastewater simultaneously, much better than powdered activated carbon and anion exchange resins. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the PFAS were efficiently adsorbed on the C-F chain of COFs, while the C-H chain of hydrocarbons were repelled by the C-F chain on COFs. Additionally, the COFs was well regenerated by the mixture of NaCl and methanol solution, and showed relatively stable adsorption capacity for PFAS within 5 cycles. These results offer an alternative strategy for bifunctional modification to selectively and efficiently remove PFAS from water.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) substitutes such as hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (GenX) and hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) are toxic as environmental contaminants, and efficient adsorbents are required to remove them from waters. In this study, the novel cationic covalent organic framework (COF) was developed via an imine condensation reaction for efficient removal of GenX and HFPO-TA from aqueous solution. The prepared COFs exhibited a 2D ordering hexagonal structure with AA stacking and two classes of pores (mesopore and micropore). The introduction of quaternary ammonium on COF exhibited little effect on its morphology and crystal structure. The cationic COF with quaternary ammonium showed high adsorption capacity for GenX (2.06 mmol/g) and HFPO-TA (2.16 mmol/g), more efficient than conventional activated carbons and resins. The effects of pH and natural organic matter on the removal efficiency of GenX and HFPO-TA on COF were also investigated. Interestingly, the previously adsorbed GenX on the cationic COF was replaced by the longer-chain HFPO-TA, and the underlying competitive mechanism was further clarified by performing a density functional theory calculation. This study highlights the exceptional potential of COFs through topology structural design for the efficient removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from aqueous solution.
Efficient removal of per/polyfluoroalkyl substances from water using recyclable chitosan-coated covalent organic frameworks: Experimental and theoretical methods

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) demonstrate remarkable potential for adsorbing per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Nevertheless, the challenge of recycling powdered COFs hampers their practical application in water treatment. In this research, a quaternary amine COF with inherent positive surface charge was synthesised to adsorb perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) via electrostatic interactions. The COF was then combined with chitosan (CS) through a simple dissolution-evaporation process, resulting in a composite gel material termed COF@CS. The findings indicated that the adsorption capacity of COF@CS significantly surpassed that of the original COF and CS. According to the Langmuir model, COF@CS achieved a maximum PFOA capacity of 2.8 mmol g −1 at pH 5. Furthermore, the adsorption rate increased significantly to 6.2 mmol g −1 h −1 , compared to 5.9 mmol g −1 h −1 for COF and 3.4 mmol g −1 h −1 for CS. Notably, COF@CS exhibited excellent removal efficacy for ten other types of PFAS. Moreover, COF@CS could be successfully regenerated using a mixture of 70% ethanol and 1 wt% NaCl, and it exhibited stable reusability for up to five cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterisation, and theoretical calculations revealed that the quaternary amine functional group in COF served as the primary adsorption site in the composite gel material, while the protonated amino group on CS enhanced PFOA adsorption through electrostatic interaction. This study highlights the significant practical potential of COF@CS in the removal of PFAS from aqueous solution and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with potential carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic toxicity, have been widely concerned. Herein, we report a simple and rapid co-precipitation method for the synthesis of magnetic covalent organic framework (Fe3O4/COF-DQTp) adsorbent for BaP removal. The magnetized COF-DQTp was characterized by fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffractometer, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, vibrating sample magnetometer, transmission electron microscopy, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy image and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping. Under the optimized adsorption conditions, the adsorption efficiency was as high as 99% and the maximum adsorption capacity is 19 mg/g in 10 min. The adsorption kinetics shows that adsorption of BaP onto Fe3O4/COF-DQTp follow pseudo-second order kinetic model. Moreover, the prepared Fe3O4/COF-DQTp has good reusability and is a potential material for the adsorption of BaP.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising adsorbents due to their designable functionality, but their applications are hampered by poor chemical stability. Herein, a series of novel high stability olefin-linked (C = C) COFs with different ratios of OMe, as the adsorbent to remove perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), were firstly synthesized by a three-component strategy under solvothermal conditions. The synthesized COFs showed strong resistance toward acid (6 M HCl) and base (6 M NaOH) because of the robust C = C linkage which can be achieved reversibly under stringent synthetic conditions. Among the four [OMe] x -COF adsorbents, [OMe] 100 -COF exhibited the highest adsorption affinities and adsorption capacities for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of [OMe] 100 -COF for PFOA and PFOS, calculated by Langmuir isotherm, were 601.2 mg g −1 and 1106.1 mg g −1 , respectively. This could be ascribed to the synergistic combination of electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. Moreover, [OMe] 100 -COF can be efficiently regenerated during the adsorption–desorption cycles. This study provides a novel strategy to fabricate olefin-linked COFs for the effective adsorption of perfluorinated compounds in water. Environmental implication Perfluorinated compounds (PFAAs) were shortlisted for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in 2009 due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, and long-distance mobility. Adsorption is one of the promising ways with advantages of simplicity and low energy consumption for removing PFAAs from aqueous environment. Herein, a series of olefin-linked COFs with high chemical stability was synthesized using a three-component strategy. And they showed rapid uptake and high capacity for the removal of PFAAs. This study provides a novel strategy to fabricate olefin-linked COFs for the effective adsorption of perfluorinated compounds in water.

Abstract:As typical environmental endocrine disruptors and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, bisphenol A and ibuprofen in water supplies can cause great harm to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, magnetic covalent organic framework composites Fe3O4@COF-300 were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and used to remove bisphenol A and ibuprofen from water. Fe3O4@COF-300 could be rapidly separated from the matrix by external magnetic fields, and could selectively adsorb bisphenol A and ibuprofen in the presence of coexisting compounds such as phenol, Congo red, and amino black 10B. The removal efficiency of ibuprofen was 96.12–98.52% at pH in the range of 2–4 and that of bisphenol A was 92.18–95.62% at pH in the range of 2–10. The adsorption of bisphenol A and ibuprofen followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir model, and was a spontaneous endothermic process with the maximum adsorption amounts of 173.31 and 303.03 mg∙g−1, respectively. The material presented favorable stability and reusability, and the removal efficiency of bisphenol A and ibuprofen after 5 cycles was still over 92.15% and 89.29%, respectively. Therefore, the prepared composite Fe3O4@COF-300 exhibited good performance in the adsorption of bisphenol A and ibuprofen in water.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high specific surface area, tailored structure, easy functionalization, and excellent chemical stability have been extensively exploited as fantastic materials in various fields. However, in most cases, COFs prepared in powder form suffer from the disadvantages of tedious operation, strong tendency to agglomerate, and poor recyclability, greatly limiting their practical application in environmental remediation. To tackle these issues, the fabrication of magnetic COFs (MCOFs) has attracted tremendous attention. In this review, several reliable strategies for the fabrication of MCOFs are summarized. In addition, the recent application of MCOFs as outstanding adsorbents for the removal of contaminants including toxic metal ions, dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and other organic pollutants is discussed. Moreover, in-depth discussions regarding the structural parameters affecting the practical potential of MCOFs are highlighted in detail. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of MCOFs in this field are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application.
Synthesis of a magnetic C@Co material via the design of a MOF precursor for efficient and selective adsorption of water pollutants

Abstract:Abstract 3D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be appropriate templates for the fabrication of nanomaterials due to they have active sites exposed on the channel or surface, which thus provide them with improved catalytic performance. In this study, a 3D cobalt-based MOF [Co(H 2 bpta)] n (Co-MOF), where H 4 bpta denotes 2,2′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid, has been constructed with the use of a ligand with a high carbon content. On this basis, a 2D magnetic carbon-coated cobalt nanoparticle composite (C@Co) was prepared by using the title MOF. Magnetic C@Co can readily absorb dye from the solution and can thus act as an inexpensive and fast-acting adsorbent. Moreover, we have explored the adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics of the anion dyes in detail. The adsorption capacity of the C@Co for investigated methyl orange (MO) and congo red (CR) dyes were 773.48 and 495.66 mg g − 1 , respectively. It is noteworthy that MO adsorption is higher in existing materials. Thermodynamic studies suggest that the adsorption processes are spontaneous and exothermic. This study opens a new insight into the synthesis and application of carbon-based materials that enable the selective removal of organic dyes.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with great application potential in environmental remediation exist as the form of powder, which are difficult to separate and recycle. Two magnetic COFs with good recyclability were prepared through simple impregnation-precipitation method in this study. The prepared magnetic COFs were used for the adsorptive removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF). The introduction of hydroxyl group on magnetic COF (OH-MCOF) could greatly enhance its adsorption amount for DCF, and OH-MCOF was selected to study the effect of adsorption time, initial concentrations, solution pH and ionic strength on its adsorption for DCF, as well as its regeneration and reuse performance were investigated. In this study, the OH-MCOF had a high adsorption capacity for DCF of 203.4 mg/g based on the Langmuir model fitting, and exhibited quickly adsorption for DCF within 30 min. The adsorption efficiency was better than that of most reported adsorbents. Furthermore, the role of hydroxyl group on magnetic COF was highlighted through density functional theory (DFT) and electrostatic potential (ESP) calculation. After 5 cycles of regeneration, the OH-MCOF still maintained the same adsorption amount for DCF, showing good reusability and stability. This study reveals OH-MCOF with high removal and reusability in the further application of environmental remediation.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging and promising adsorbents for the adsorptive removal of many types of pollutants. However, most COFs fabricated by various methods are in the form of microcrystalline powders, making them difficult in separation. In this study, magnetic COFs were prepared by a simple impregnation method. The as-prepared samples with Ms = 5.2 emu g(-1) showed a good magnetic separation capability. Additionally, the adsorption performance of magnetic COFs towards antibiotics (e.g., diclofenac and sulfamethazine) was also studied. Various adsorption kinetic models (e.g., the pseudo first-order, the pseudo second-order, and mixed-order models) and adsorption isotherm models (e.g., the Freundlich, the Langmuir, and the Sips models) were used to study their adsorption kinetics and isotherms. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to predict the interaction between adsorbents and adsorbates and to explain the partial adsorption mechanisms.

Abstract:Adsorption is an effective method for the removal of perfluoroalkanesulfonates (PFSAs) from water, and the limitation of the adsorption rate of existing adsorbents motivates efforts to develop novel adsorbents. Here, we developed four β-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (β-CD-COFs) with a rapid removal rate and high adsorption capacity for four PFSAs in water including perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS), and chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F53B). All β-CD-COFs exhibited extremely fast adsorption (adsorption equilibrium <2 min) for PFSAs with high adsorption capacities (0.33-1.51 mmol/g), which were significantly better than those of traditional resins and activated carbons, probably due to the ordered pores of β-CD-COFs and the electron-deficient cavity β-CD. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also showed that PFSAs could be captured in the β-CD cavity through strong interactions with a high binding energy. The novel β-CD-COFs were highly selective to PFSAs in simulated wastewater impacted by aqueous film-forming foams, and they could also rapidly remove them from an actual chrome plating wastewater within 2 min. Additionally, the β-CD-COFs could be regenerated by methanol with relatively good reusability in four cycles, further highlighting their application potential as PFAS adsorbents in water or wastewater.
Magnetic COFs As Catalyst for Fenton-like Degradation of Sulfamethazine.

Abstract:A novel magnetic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) (Fe2O3@COFs) composite was fabricated by restricting the growth of Fe2O3 in the nanoscale channel of COFs, which can be used as the Fenton-like catalyst for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation in aqueous solution. The as-prepared catalyst had good crystallinity, porosity and nano-flower-shaped morphology, and the encapsulated Fe2O3 particles were well-distributed and restrained in the nano-channels of COFs. Furthermore, magnetic COFs could not only adsorb SMT, but also catalyze the Fenton-like degradation of SMT in the presence of H2O2 (about 100% of removal efficiency). Acidic condition (pH = 3) facilitated SMT degradation in Fe2O3@COFs/H2O2. system. In consecutive 5 cycles, the catalyst showed a good stability and reusability with a high removal efficiency (>96%), a good mineralization rate (about 35%), and a very low Fe2+ leaching (below 0.1 mg L-1). Electron spin resonance (ESR) and quenching tests proved that hydroxyl radicals were the main reactive species generated in the Fe2O3@COFs/H2O2 system for the degradation of SMT. In conclusion, Fe2O3@COFs is a promising Fenton-like catalyst for the degradation of SMT and other toxic organic pollutants in water and wastewater. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have great potential for solving dye contamination problems due to their excellent organic dye adsorption properties. However, MOFs adsorbents present a tremendous drawback which is their poor separability. Herein, the core-shell Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS with abundant active sites and sensitive magnetic responses was synthesized in one step via simultaneously introducing imidazole ligands and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) modifiers into the dispersion of Fe3O4 microspheres. This magnetic Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS microsphere can complete the magnetic separation and recovery in only 10 seconds. Moreover, the addition of PSS increases the active sites of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS, which is more favorable for the adsorption of organic dyes. The maximum adsorption capacity for crystal violet (CV) can reach 382 mg/g. The adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS for CV is mainly attributed to electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction. The effects of solution pH and coexisting ions for the adsorption capacity were adequately discussed. These studies suggest that Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS not only has efficient adsorption properties but also can be easily separated by external magnetic fields after being used for organic dye wastewater treatment, which may have considerable potential for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have promising applications in environmental remediation owing to their precise directional synthesis and superior adsorption ability. However, magnetic COFs with pyridinic N have not been studied as bifunctional materials for the adsorption and catalytic degradation of dyes. Therefore, in this study, a magnetic COF with a pyridinic structure (BiPy-MCOF) was successfully synthesized using a solvothermal method, which exhibited higher methyl orange (MO) removal than other common adsorbents. The best degradation efficiency via the Fenton-like reaction was obtained by pre-adsorbing MO for 3 h at pH 3.1. Both adsorption and catalytic degradation resulted in better removal of MO under acidic conditions. The introduction of pyridinic N improved MO adsorption and degradation on BiPy-MCOF. The electrostatic potential (ESP) showed that pyridinic N had a strong affinity for MO adsorption. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the potential sites on MO molecules that may be attacked by free radicals. Possible degradation pathways were proposed based on the experimental results. Moreover, BiPy-MCOF could effectively degrade MO at least four times, and a high degradation efficiency was obtained in other dyes applications. The coupling of adsorption and degradation demonstrated that the as-prepared BiPy-MCOF was an effective material for organic dyes removal from water.
