Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:Oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes/ketones is a transformation of fundamental importance. Usually stoichiometric amounts of oxidants are required for these types of reactions. Although aerobic oxidations have been studied, there exist challenges: complicated additives, toxic or expensive catalyst(s), a large amount of base or molecular sieves, limited substrate scope, isomerization of Z C=C bonds, etc. Herein, a general and practical room temperature aerobic oxidation of different types of alcohols including allenols, alkenols, propargylic alcohols, benzylic alcohols, and aliphatic alcohols in MeCN (acetonitrile) or DCE (1,2-dichloroethane) using readily available and cheap Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy) or 4-HO-TEMPO as the catalysts forming aldehydes or ketones with an excellent selectivity has been developed. Some thirty to forty mmol scale reactions have been demonstrated.

Abstract:Aerobic oxidation of alcohols is one of the most important methods for the production of aldehydes. In this work, a scalable, continuous flow synthesis method for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols using a copper catalyst with redox-active ligand and molecular oxygen (O-2, air) was developed. The yield of benzaldehyde could reach 93.4% by optimizing the following conditions, such as copper content, solvent, O-2 flow rate, and temperature. This synthesis method exhibited excellent functional group compatibility for various alcohols with excellent reactivity and reusability, avoiding the use of some nitroxyl radicals (TEMPO, ABNO) or base additives. In the microchannel reactor, the total reaction time could be reduced from 24 h to 40 min, and a simplified kinetic model was established.

Abstract:The development of robust heterogeneous catalysts that can realize the aerobic oxidation of alcohols in metal-free conditions is a profound challenge. Here, we report a reliable methodology to covalently graft 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) moieties on commercial activated carbons. Catalyst activity and stability are investigated in a continuous micro-packed bed. Notably, the catalytic activity achieved in the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (Turnover frequency: 135.9 h(-1), Turnover number: 328.9) is superior to the catalysts reported in the literature (Turnover frequency: 0.5-67 h(-1)) and the state-of-art commercial catalysts (Turnover number: 205.6). Additionally, the influence of H2O on the benzaldehyde yield indicated that H2O as the only by-product plays a promotional role in TEMPO/TBN catalytic system. Based on these results and previous mechanism analysis, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed. Post-catalytic analysis and regeneration strategy indicated that the cleavage of the amide bond linkages is the main reason for catalyst deactivation. (C) 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Herein, we report a new catalytic protocol for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. The catalytic system is formed in situ, in a straightforward and user‐friendly manner, combining a widely available copper source (Cu2O) with one imidazolium salt precursor bearing perfluorinated moieties. Our protocol uses TEMPO, as additive, and the reaction takes place at the interface of a biphasic solvent system, consisting of anisole and 1‐bromoperfluorooctane. The as‐prepared carbonyl compounds remain in the organic solvent, while the catalytic system remains in the fluorous phase. In this manner, the isolation and purification of the desired products are quite facile. Our protocol uses low catalytic loadings and is more efficient with primary alcohols, affording the desired products in good to excellent yields. The fluorous phase containing the catalytic system can be efficiently recovered and reused for at least six times, without a significant decrease in its catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Imidazolium salts bearing TEMPO groups react with commercially available copper powder affording Cu-NHC complexes. The in situ generated Cu-NHC-TEMPO complexes are quite efficient catalysts for aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols into aldehydes. The catalyst is easily available, and various primary alcohols were selectively converted to aldehydes in excellent yields.

Abstract:Homogeneous Cu(I)/NMI/TEMPO catalyst system (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl) has been investigated for its catalysis on the aerobic oxidation of 1-octanol and other alcohols into aldehydes under room temperature. The catalytic species was found to be a Cu(I) centre coordinated by two NMI molecules and other two weakly bound solvent molecules, [Cu(NMI) 2 (Sol) 2 ] + (Sol = solvent). When CuI was used, this species could be [Cu(NMI)I(Sol) 2 ]. Not like being speculated previously, NMI in this system acts solely as a ligand and its role coordinated to the copper centre enhanced the electron density on the metal centre which promoted the O 2 binding in the catalysis. The labile solvent binding to the Cu(I) centre is essential to ensure both oxygen and substrate binding. The catalyst system is suitable for the oxidation of various alcohols using a simple reaction setup and workup. In particular, the system possesses strong oxidizing capability in quantitative conversion of benzylic alcohols regardless of the substituents on the phenyl ring and allylic alcohols into aldehydes. A plausible mechanism was also proposed for the catalysis. Graphical Abstract The aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols at room temperature to corresponding aldehydes was achieved by the catalyst composed by Cu(I) and methyl imidazole (NMI) mediated by TEMPO in acetonitrile. The catalytic species is proposed to be such a Cu(I) complex that two of its four coordinating sites are occupied by a strong ligand(s) and the rest two are weakly bound by solvent molecules.

Abstract:Here, the first copper-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids with TEMPO and KHSO4 as the co-catalysts has been developed. The reaction exhibits excellent substrate scope and functional group compatibility under mild conditions. Even the very sensitive chiral alcohols, chiral amino alcohols, and alcohol-containing steroid skeletons may be oxidized to afford the corresponding carboxylic acids or lactones without racemization.

Abstract:Heterogeneous solvent-metal-free aerobic oxidation of alcohols under ambient conditions is interesting but remains a significant challenge. Herein, a series of porous TEMPO-functionalized poly(ionic liquid)s (TEMPO-PILs) featuring a pure polycationic framework were successfully developed through the free radical polymerization of the ionic liquid 3-(2-chloroacetic acid-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxo-4-piperidyl)-1-vinylimidazolium chloride and bis-vinylimidazolium bromide salt. Characterizations revealed that the obtained TEMPO-PILs possessed a high TEMPO density, abundant bromide ions, and a tunable porous structure, which enabled them to serve as solvent-free heterogeneous organocatalysts for the metal-free aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol under ambient conditions, exhibiting high catalytic activity and stable recyclability. A high yield of 99% coupled with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 13.3 h −1 was obtainable, which is higher than most of the reported TEMPO-based heterogeneous catalysts, even superior to homogeneous TEMPO-functionalized ionic liquids. Furthermore, a broad range of alcohols were effectively converted into their corresponding ketones and aldehydes. A possible reaction mechanism is proposed for understanding the catalytic oxidation behavior, indicative of the synergistic effect of TEMPO moieties and bromide ions.

Abstract:2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) has vital applications in the field of multiphase reaction, espe-cially for the aerobic oxidation of alcohols. Activated carbon (AC) has a porous structure, rigid surface property, and low cost, which was the prominent carrier for TEMPO immobilization to produce the heterogeneous catalyst. However, the brilliant strategy of TEMPO immobilization on AC for long-term aerobic oxidation of alcohols was still challenging. In this work, surface-formylation and reductive amination were conducted to achieve the co-valent TEMPO grafting on AC, which opened up a novel routine for surface modification and preparing het-erogeneous catalysts based on carbon materials. The catalysts were packed in a micro-packed bed reactor to perform continuous aerobic oxidation of various alcohols. The catalytic performance of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde (turnover number: 1160.6, turnover frequency: 99.6 h-1) was much superior to those in the literature by using covalently grafted heterogeneous TEMPO catalysts.

Abstract:A novel catalytic system was prepared by impregnating ionic liquid immobilized 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl ( TEMPO) and copper salt onto various silica supports. This catalytic system was capable of rapidly converting different benzylic and allylic alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes under O-2 atmosphere with high conversion. Recycling results showed that the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused.

Abstract:Porous organic polymer PTPA containing N, S heteroatoms has been prepared via oxidative coupling of thiophene. Then composite material Cu-Cu2O/PTPA was synthesized via solvothermal method and fully characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), N-2 adsorption desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Under the mild conditions of 30. and open air, Cu-Cu2O/PTPA showed good catalytic activity towards selective oxidation of benzyl, allyl, and heterocyclic alcohols employing 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) as a co-catalyst and N-methylimidazole (NMI) as an auxiliary ligand. Due to the high content of N and S heteroatoms in the material, Cu-Cu2O/PTPA showed excellent cycling stability for oxidation of benzyl alcohol, and the yield of product remained above 97% after 9 runs.

Abstract:A mathematical model was developed to simulate the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of aqueous phenol in a trickle bed reactor (TBR). Both ‘axial dispersion’ and ‘plug flow’ models were proposed. ‘Steady-state’ mass transfers across different phases inside the reactor have all been considered in parallel with oxidation reactions catalyzed by heterogeneous copper catalyst supported on activated carbon. The changes in the concentrations of oxygen and phenol in various phases were thus depicted as a function of bed length. In order to validate the accuracy of the established TBR model, a series of experiments on phenol oxidation were performed on a pilot-scale TBR containing 5.6l of catalysts. The model was found able to give satisfactory predictions for nearly half of all the runs. The discrepancies between the experimental and modeling results were investigated for the less promising runs. It was also noticed that similar simulation results could be attained from ‘axial dispersion’ model against ‘plug flow’ model. Following the discussion on the changes of phenol and oxygen concentrations in the various phases, it is finally concluded that the performance of the TBR of this study depends largely on gas-to-liquid mass transfer process. Further suggestions with regards to reactor optimization are also proposed on the basis of experimental outcome.

Abstract:We have developed a new protocol involving the "copper(II) chloride-cesium carbonate" system for the aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols. Cesium carbonates and the solvents such as toluene and 1,2-dichloroethane play important roles to form a catalytically active intermediate containing a mu-hydroxyl-bridged trinuclear copper moiety (complex 1). From the X-ray crystal structure of complex 1, an electrostatic interaction between chloride anions and cesium cations was observed, which stimulated us to understand the roles of cesium carbonate in this reaction as a base, stabilizing and "solvating" intermediates in toluene and 1,2-dichloroethane.
