Abstract:High temperatures and dry air hinder calcium absorption in tomatoes ( Solanum lycopersicum L.), thereby significantly reducing tomato yield and quality. Reducing atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is an important measure to improve calcium absorption in tomato, but the regulation cost of VPD throughout the growth period is high, and the changes in tomato calcium absorption, yield and quality at different growth periods under different VPDs are still unclear. This study examined the effects of VPD changes (high VPD 2.22 kPa, low VPD 0.95 kPa) at different growth periods (seedling period, flowering and fruit setting period, fruit expansion period and fruit discoloration period) on calcium absorption, yield and quality of tomato, besides analyzing the correlation between calcium absorption and yield and quality. The results showed that the yield and WUE yield were higher under the high VPD during the flowering and fruit setting period and under the low VPD at the fruit expansion period. The appearance quality and nutritional quality of tomato were higher under the low VPD at the fruit expansion period and fruit discoloration period, while the flavor quality was higher under the high VPD. Comprehensive evaluation values were established to balance the appearance quality, nutritional quality, and flavor quality of tomato using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The comprehensive quality was the best under the low VPD at the seedling period and fruit expansion period, the high VPD at the flowering and fruit setting period and fruit discoloration period. To maximize cost savings, plants were grown under the low VPD only at fruit expansion period, while reducing costs and improving yield, quality and calcium absorption. Yield and comprehensive quality were significantly and positively correlated with the calcium concentration and the total calcium accumulation in fruits. These results provide a theoretical basis for VPD regulation in greenhouse tomato production.
