Abstract:Oxalates, together with iron (hydr)oxides, play important roles in environmental decontamination by photo-chemical generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, comprehending reaction mechanism about photolytic behaviors across solid-liquid interface is scarce. Here, the photochemical properties of hematite-oxalate system were investigated from complexation, photolysis, and ROS generation tests. Results implied adsorbed oxalate on hematite surface was detached via non-reductive dissolution by irradiating light. Then, the photolysis of Fe(III)-oxalate complexes on hematite surface or dissolved in solution was followed by photodissociation mechanism, in which per Fe(III)-oxalate complex led to two CO2 center dot- formation. Moreover, O-2(center dot-)/(OOH)-O-center dot and (OH)-O-center dot amounts induced by photodissociation mechanism were much higher than that by classic intramolecular ligand-to-metal charge transfer mechanism in Fe3+-Ox homogeneous system. The photo-degradation and mineralization of sulfadimidine (5 mg/L) reached 95 % and 59 % within 2 h using hematite-Ox system. These findings can help in implementing environmental remediation by utilizing iron (hydr)oxides and oxalate in natural environment.

Abstract:Hematite is composed of iron and oxygen elements, and the iron-oxygen spatial distribution would affect directly its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. However, less work has focused on the effect of iron-oxygen composition on the characteristic of charge transport and interfacial reaction. Here, we investigated the charge transfer and interface reaction of two typical iron-oxygen compositions of hematite prepared from the precursors of Fe and FeOOH in which different iron-oxygen ratios were obtained. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy etching confirms that different precursors do cause differences in spatial elemental composition after thermal treatment. For Fe precursors, oxygen deficiency in the bulk is responsible for its lower bulk efficiency, whereas the defect-free surface results in a high surface separation efficiency and a low interfacial reaction catalysis rate. The FeOOH precursor forms an oxygen-rich surface and, therefore, introduces a large number of surface hole traps. Excessive traps significantly hinder surface charge separation and transport but favor surface electrocatalytic kinetics. Our work provides a perspective on the relationship between the semiconductor electrode performance and its structure and provides effective guidance for further optimization.
Hematite Facet Confined Ferrous Ions As High Efficient Fenton Catalysts to Degrade Organic Contaminants by Lowering H2O2 Decomposition Energetic Span

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate that ferrous ions confined on the hematite facets can significantly promote the H2O2 decomposition to produce •OH for more efficient organic contaminants degradation than the unconfined counterparts, while hematite nanorods with exposed {0 0 1} and {1 1 0} facets exhibit better confining effect than nanoplates with exposed {0 0 1} facets. Experimental results revealed that the H2O2 decomposition efficiency of hematite facet confined ferrous ions was affected by the amount of surface confined ferrous ions, and also governed by the binding mode of ferrous ions on the hematite facets. We interestingly found that the polar {1 1 0} facets could confine ferrous ions of higher density with a five-coordination binding mode and thus lower the H2O2 decomposition energetic span more efficiently than the nonpolar {0 0 1} facets, which confined ferrous ions with a six-coordination binding mode. The specific surface area normalized •OH formation rate constants were, respectively, 5.50 × 10−3 and 1.04 × 10−2 s−1 for hematite nanoplates and nanorods confined ferrous ions, which were 1.2 and 2.2 times that (4.75 × 10−3 s−1) of the unconfined counterpart. Moreover, rhodamine B could be efficiently degraded in the presence of hematite (0.4 g L−1), Fe2+ (5.0 × 10−5 mol L−1) and H2O2 (5.0 × 10−5 mol L−1) at pH 4.7, along with 23.6% and 72.5% of H2O2 consumption efficiencies for hematite nanoplates and nanorods, respectively. Meanwhile, 6.6% and 11.8% of nitrogen in rhodamine B were converted to NO3− in the hematite nanoplates and nanorods confined ferrous ions Fenton systems, respectively. It was found that N-deethylation, destruction of chromophores, opening-ring and mineralization occurred during the confined ferrous Fenton rhodamine B oxidation process. This study can deepen our understanding on the enhanced reactivity of ferrous ions bound on the surface of iron oxides, and also shed light on the design of high efficient heterogeneous Fenton catalysts.

Abstract:The intrinsic activity of iron cation towards decontamination via peroxymonosulfate activation depends on its orbital configurations including the factors of charge amount, spin state, as well as orbital arrangement. Transition metals are excellent active sites to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for water treatment, but the favorable electronic structures governing reaction mechanism still remain elusive. Herein, the authors construct typical d‐orbital configurations on iron octahedral (FeOh) and tetrahedral (FeTd) sites in spinel ZnFe2O4 and FeAl2O4, respectively. ZnFe2O4 (136.58 min−1 F−1 cm2) presented higher specific activity than FeAl2O4 (97.47 min−1 F−1 cm2) for tetracycline removal by PMS activation. Considering orbital features of charge amount, spin state, and orbital arrangement by magnetic spectroscopic analysis, ZnFe2O4 has a larger bond order to decompose PMS. Using this descriptor, high‐spin FeOh is assumed to activate PMS mainly to produce nonradical reactive oxygen species (ROS) while high‐spin FeTd prefers to induce radical species. This hypothesis is confirmed by the selective predominant ROS of 1O2 on ZnFe2O4 and O2•− on FeAl2O4 via quenching experiments. Electrochemical determinations reveal that FeOh has superior capability than FeTd for feasible valence transformation of iron cations and fast interfacial electron transfer. DFT calculations further suggest octahedral d‐orbital configuration of ZnFe2O4 is beneficial to enhancing Fe‐O covalence for electron exchange. This work attempts to understand the d‐orbital configuration‐dependent PMS activation to design efficient catalysts.

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton reactions of zero-valent iron (ZVI) requires the sufficient release of Fe(II) to catalyze the H2O2 decomposition. However, the rate-limiting step of proton transfer through the passivation layer of ZVI restricted the Fe(II) release via Fe0 core corrosion. Herein we modified the shell of ZVI with highly proton-conductive FeC2O4·2H2O by ball-milling (OA-ZVIbm), and demonstrated its high heterogeneous Fenton performance of thiamphenicol (TAP) removal, with 500 times enhancement of the rate constant. More importantly, the OA-ZVIbm/H2O2 showed little attenuation of the Fenton activity during 13 successive cycles, and was applicable across a wide pH range of 3.5-9.5. Interestingly, the OA-ZVIbm/H2O2 reaction showed pH self-adapting ability, which initially reduced and then sustained the solution pH in the range of 3.5-5.2. The abundant intrinsic surface Fe(II) of OA-ZVIbm (45.54% vs. 27.52% in ZVIbm, according to Fe 2p XPS profiles) was oxidized by H2O2 and hydrolyzed to generate protons, and the FeC2O4·2H2O shell favored the fast transfer of protons to inner Fe0, therefore, the consumption-regeneration cycle of protons were accelerated to drove the production of Fe(II) for Fenton reactions, demonstrated by the more prominent H2 evolution and nearly 100% H2O2 decomposition by OA-ZVIbm. Furthermore, the FeC2O4·2H2O shell was stable and slightly decreased from 1.9% to 1.7% after the Fenton reaction. This study clarified the significance of proton transfer on the reactivity of ZVI, and provided an efficient strategy to achieve the highly efficient and robust heterogeneous Fenton reaction of ZVI for pollution control.

Abstract:Abstract Iron is an extraordinary promoter to impose nickel/cobalt (hydr)oxides as the most active oxygen evolution reaction catalysts, whereas the synergistic effect is actively debated. Here, we unveil that active oxygen species mediate a strong electrochemical interaction between iron oxides (FeO x H y ) and the supporting metal oxyhydroxides. Our survey on the electrochemical behavior of nine supporting metal oxyhydroxides (M(O)OH) uncovers that FeO x H y synergistically promotes substrates that can produce active oxygen species exclusively. Tafel slopes correlate with the presence and kind of oxygen species. Moreover, the oxygen evolution reaction onset potentials of FeO x H y @M(O)OH coincide with the emerging potentials of active oxygen species, whereas large potential gaps are present for intact M(O)OH. Chemical probe experiments suggest that active oxygen species could act as proton acceptors and/or mediators for proton transfer and/or diffusion in cooperative catalysis. This discovery offers a new insight to understand the synergistic catalysis of Fe-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Interactions between manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) are widespread processes in soils and sediments, however, the abiotic transformation mechanisms are not fully understood. Herein, Mn(II) oxidation on hematite were investigated at various pH under oxic condition. Mn(II) oxidation rates increased from 3×10 -4 to 8×10 -2 h -1 as pH increased from 7.0 to 9.0, whereas hematite enhanced Mn(II) oxidation rates to 1 h -1 . During oxidation process, high pH could promote the oxidation of Mn(II) into Mn minerals, resulting in the rapid consumption of the newly-formed H + , and high pH facilitated Mn(II) adsorption and oxidation by altering Mn(II) reactivity and speciation. Only granule-like hausmannite was found on the hematite surface at pH 7.0, whereas hausmannite particles and feitknechtite and manganite nanowires were formed at pH from 7.5 to 9.0. Moreover, a co-shell structured nanowire composed of manganite and feitknechtite was observed owing to autocatalytic reactions. Specifically, electron transfers between Mn(II) and O 2 occurred on the surface or through bulk phase of hematite, and direct electron transfers in the O 2 -Mn(II) complex and indirect electron transfers in the O 2 -Fe(II/III)-Mn(II) complex may both have contribution to the overall reactions. The findings provide a comprehensive interpretation of Fe-Mn interaction and have implications for the formation of soil Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides with unique properties in controlling element cycling.

Abstract:This study reports the H2O2 activation with different hematite nanocrystals and ascorbate ions for the herbicide alachlor degradation at pH 5. We found that hematite nanoplates (HNPs) exposed with {001} facets exhibited better catalytic performance than hematite nanocubes (HNCs) exposed with {012} facets, which was attributed to the formation of inner-sphere iron-ascorbate complexes on the hematite facets. The 3-fold undercoordination Fe cations of {001} facet favors the formation of inner-sphere iron-ascorbate complexes, while the 5-fold undercoordination Fe cations of {012} facet has stereo-hindrance effect, disfavoring the complex formation. The surface area normalized alachlor degradation rate constant (23.3 × 10-4 min-1 L m-2) of HNPs-ascorbate Fenton system was about 2.6 times that (9.1 × 10-4 min-1 L m-2) of HNCs-ascorbate counterpart. Meanwhile, the 89.0% of dechlorination and 30.0% of denitrification in the HNPs-ascorbate Fenton system were also significantly higher than those (60.9% and 13.1%) of the HNCs-ascorbate one. More importantly, the reductive dissolution of hematite by ascorbate was strongly coupled with the subsequent H2O2 decomposition by surface bound ferrous ions through surface iron cycle on the hematite facets in the hematite-ascorbate Fenton systems. This coupling could significantly inhibit the conversion of surface bound ferrous ions to dissolved ones, and thus account for the stability of hematite nanocrystals. This work sheds light on the internal relationship between iron geochemical cycling and contaminants degradation, and also inspires us to utilize surface iron cycle of widely existent hematite for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Oxalate is supposed to affect the applicability of hydrated ferric oxide (HFO)-based composites for environmental remediation because it would enhance HFO dissolution. Here, we examined the effect of ionic strength and visible light irradiation on the oxalate-induced dissolution of HFO, which is supported by two porous polystyrene beads binding chloromethyl groups (P-C) and sulfonate groups (P-S) respectively. As compared to the bare HFO, the dissolution of the immobilized HFO was considerably slower as a result of the slower oxalate adsorption. Compared to P-C, P-S could favor HFO dispersion greatly and achieve HFO nanoparticles of smaller size and higher surface area, resulting in more oxalate uptake with HFO-P-S than with HFO-P-C and a faster dissolution of the former composite. Increasing ionic strength from 0.01 to 0.1. M did not expose any significant effect on the dissolution kinetics of the bare HFO, but apparently promoted HFO dissolution for both composites. In the presence of visible light irradiation, an obvious photochemical reduction of Fe(III) into Fe(II) was observed for the bare HFO, which greatly promoted the iron leaching from solid to solution. However, it did not occur for both composites because the solid polymers keep the inside HFO nanoparticles from light irradiation. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Naturally occurring hematite has been widely studied in the Fenton-like system for water pollutant remediation due to its abundance and non-toxicity. However, its inadequate catalytic activity results in difficulty in effectively degrading pollutants in the catalytic degradation system that it constitutes. Thus, we constructed a photochemical system composed of hematite with {001} facet of high activity facet and low-cost and non-toxic oxalic acid (OA) for the removal of various types of pollutants. The removal rate for the degradation of metronidazole, tetracycline hydrochloride, rhodamine B, and hexavalent chromium by hematite nanoplate with the exposed {001} facet activating OA under visible light irradiation was 4.75, 2.25, 2.33, and 2.74 times than that by the exposed {110} facet, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation proved that the OA molecule was more easily adsorbed on the {001} facet of hematite than that on the {110} facet, which would favor the formation of the more Fe(III)-OA complex and reactive species. In addition, the reactive site of metronidazole for the attraction of radicals was identified on the basis of the DFT calculation on the molecular occupied orbitals, and the possible degradation pathway for metronidazole included carbon chain fracture, hydroxyethyl-cleavage, denitrogenation, and hydroxylation. Thus, this finding may offer a valuable direction in designing an efficient iron-based catalyst based on facet engineering for the improved activity of Fenton-like systems such as OA activation.

Identifying the Spectroelectrochemical Characteristics of Hematite Photoanodes for Water Oxidation

Abstract:Achieving efficient solar water splitting using hematite (α-Fe2O3), one of the most promising candidates for photoanodes, requires photogenerated holes to be efficiently used for water oxidation. However, this goal is obstructed by multiple undesirable recombination processes, as well as insufficient fundamental mechanistic understandings of water oxidation kinetics, particularly as to the nature of reaction pathways and possible reaction intermediates. Here we spectroelectro-chemically identify some of the most critical interfacial processes which determine the photoelectrocatalytic efficiencies of water oxidation, for hematite films with varied surface properties by tailoring the doping level of titanium. The spectroscopic signals of the processes inactive for water oxidation, including oxidation of intra-gap Fe2+ states and Fermi level pinning, are successfully distinguished from that of the active reaction intermediate, Fe(IV)=O. In addition, our kinetic analyses reveal two water oxidation pathways, of which the direct hole transfer mechanism becomes dominant over the surface states-mediated mechanism when the hematite surface is reconstructed by high levels of titanium dopants.
Self-Co-Catalyzed Fluorine-Doped Hematite Nanocrystal for Efficient Water Oxidation.

Abstract:Herein, excellent light absorption and oxygen-evolving activity were simultaneously achieved by doping fluorine anions into hematite nanocrystals. Upon anion doping, the band structure of hematite can be effectively regulated, leading to the generation of defect levels between the band gap and remarkably increased visible light absorption. The activity for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of the hematite nanocrystals is enhanced after fluorine doping, where the doped hematite assists as an effective catalyst for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The optimization strategy proposed herein may shed light on the future design of photocatalysts for energy-related applications.
Coupling-promoted Oxidative Degradation of Organic Micropollutants by Iron Oxychloride (feocl) with Dual Active Sites

Abstract:Heterogeneous Fenton has emerged as a profitable solution for contaminant removal via advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Besides the dominant hydroxyl radicals (HO•), some weaker oxidants, such as ferryl-oxo species (Fe(IV)=O) species, can also be produced during the surface H2O2 activation, but its function is not well understood. In this study, we developed a vanadium-etched iron oxychloride (V-FeOCl) catalyst that simultaneously incorporates Fenton-like sites and peroxidase-like (Fe(IV)=O) sites. The derived V-FeOCl material showed 2.8–5.4 times enhancement of the pseudo-first-order rate constant for various recalcitrant organic micropollutants. Most importantly, the activity demonstrated an intriguing induction period for the TOC removal as well as a rocketed kinetics after the induction. This induction period was further attributed to the oxidative coupling of the organic monomers, as revealed by the identification of dimers using UPLC-MS. The coupling intermediates were demonstrated to be more susceptible to HO• radical attack via the high-throughput prediction of the HO• radical rate constants of 94 possible coupling intermediates using machine learning. These findings clarified the key role of Fe(IV)=O in the HO•-based oxidation process and points to a novel coupling-enhanced degradation pathway, which could potentially pave a new avenue of oxidative transformations for catalytic and environmental applications.
Effects of humic acid and fulvic acid on the sequestration of copper and carbon during the iron oxide transformation

Abstract:In natural environments, the iron oxide transformation is associated with natural organic matter (NOM) and heavy metals. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the dynamic interactions among NOM, iron oxides, and heavy metals during the iron oxide transformation process, which has significant implications on the fate of metals and carbon (C) in the environment. In this study, two types of NOM, fulvic acid and humic acid (FA and HA) were used to elucidate the influence of NOM on the iron oxide transformation and the dynamic distribution and speciation of Cu and C during the iron oxide transformation. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy showed that both FA and HA decreased the rates of ferrihydrite transformation to hematite. The EXAFS analysis of Cu speciation and spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (Cs-STEM) showed that Cu could be incorporated into the hematite particles while HA and FA hindered the incorporation of Cu, consistent with the chemical extraction results. Compared with FA, HA resulted in more extractable Cu by diluted acid and less Cu incorporation into iron oxides. The Cs-STEM results showed that both HA and FA resulted in the formation of ellipsoidal hematite particles with a loose structure. Batch extraction experiments and the Cs-STEM imaging, collectively, indicated that HA might penetrate into the loose and porous structure of hematite nanoparticles, which was less evident for FA. Results in this study help to understand the environmental behaviors of C and Cu during the iron oxide transformation process and also shed light on the nanoscale mechanisms of C sequestration within iron oxides.
