Abstract:On 12 May, a great earthquake (Ms=8.0) on the Longmenshan thrust fault rumbled through Chinas Sichuan province, killing more than 69,000 people and injuring 374,000. The Longmenshan thrust is part of the eastern border of the Tibetan Plateau, but it is not the plateaus only restless margin. An even larger earthquake (Ms=8.1) on the Kunlun fault shook northeastern Tibet in 2001, fortunately in a sparsely populated area. These massive quakes underscore the importance of understanding the tectonic response of Asia to collision by India. The International Deep Profiling of Tibet and the Himalaya (INDEPTH) program explores the dynamics of the India‐Asia collision. Though many past geophysical studies have focused on the Himalayas and the southern Tibetan Plateau, the INDEPTH IV project examines the deep structure of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.
Machine Learning-Based Earthquake Catalog and Tomography Characterize the Middle-Northern Section of the Xiaojiang Fault Zone

Abstract:Abstract The left-lateral strike-slip Xiaojiang fault is an important tectonic boundary between Sichuan–Yunnan diamond block and the Yangtze block, which accommodated several M > 7.0 damaging earthquakes in the past ∼500 yr, as well as intense tectonic deformation. However, the seismogenesis of its middle-northern section are not well understood due to the lack of dense stations. In this study, we analyze one year of continuous seismic records from November 2019 to November 2020, which are recorded at a recently deployed dense seismic array. We build a high-precision earthquake catalog for the region using our recently developed machine learning-based earthquake location workflow (LOC-FLOW), which consists of machine learning phase picking, phase association, velocity model updating, and station correction, absolute location, and double-difference relative location. We then adopt a double-difference tomography method (tomoDD) to refine locations of 16,000 events and build a high-resolution 3D velocity model using both machine learning differential times and cross-correlation differential times. The seismicity distribution not only delineates detailed geometry of the main fault system but also characterizes several branch faults, including two echelon subfaults crossing the north–south-striking main fault. The velocity model shows strong lateral heterogeneities and exhibits a clear relationship to the seismicity distribution: the boundary of high- and low-velocity regions or high-velocity regions above low-velocity bodies accommodate the majority of earthquakes. The variation of the constructed 3D velocity model can be well explained by geological and tectonic settings of the region. In addition, we identify two seismic gaps, which accumulate stress and imply the potential of hosting future moderate-to-large earthquakes. Our study demonstrates, with the aid of LOC-FLOW and tomoDD, machine learning-based phase picks lead to promising performance in constraining high-precision earthquake catalogs and constructing high-resolution velocity models. Machine learning-based tools are becoming the next generation of routine earthquake analysis.

Abstract:The Xiaojiang Fault (XJF) Zone locates in the southeastern of Tibetan Plateau and defines the boundary between the South China and Sichuan-Yunnan blocks. Historical large earthquakes were hosted on the XJF, though its seismic hazard in the near future is under debate. In this study, we utilize portable broad-band seismic network to unravel the microseismic activities along XJF, and to further investigate the fault structures and their properties. Adopting PALM, a newly developed earthquake detection algorithm, we obtained ~13,000 relocated events. The micro-seismicity reveals widespread off-fault structures showing conjugate geometry, while the major faults present low seismicity. The fault branches conjugate to the main-fault present intensive microseismicity, which hosts repeating events and presents high b-value. Regional GPS stations reflect slips are mostly concentrated along the XJF, while the slip rate on off-fault branches correlates with seismic activities on these structures. Combining with other recent seismological and magnetotellurics evidences, we suggest a low strength on these off-fault structures, which may partially release tectonic stress loading and serve as a barrier for future big earthquakes. On the XJF, the microseismic events are clustered on the fault junctions with low b-value. A special set of clusters between 25°N to 25.5°N show an along-strike variation of depth from 10 to 25-km, imaging the boundary between creeping and locked fault portions. We revisit the seismic hazard problem of XJF, and conclude that XJF is at the late stage of inter-seismic period.
Correlating seismicity to Curie-point depths in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:We relocate 4921 earthquakes in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau during 2008 to 2017 using two different crustal velocity models and the double-difference relocation algorithm. Our relocated earthquakes are more concentrated around the Longmenshan, Xianshuihe fault zones and southern Sichuan Basin, with most focal depths ranging 5 and 20 km. We calculate the vector and gradient tensor magnetic anomalies based on the NGDC-720 model and find that most earthquakes are located in the regions of negative anomalies, and along the southwestern margin of the Sichuan Basin as a strong-weak anomaly boundary. Curie-point depths are estimated using the centroid spectral approach based on 3D fractal magnetization model, and the average thermal gradients of the magnetic layer are calculated. Crustal temperature structures are then calculated using the ID steady thermal conduction equation. The results show that most of the earthquakes occurred in the regions with large Curie depths and low thermal gradients. The evaluated crustal temperatures for most earthquakes hypocenters with M >= 2.0 and M >= 4.0 are between 100 and 500 C-degrees and between 200 and 400 C-degrees , respectively. The 2008 M(s)8.0 Wenchuan, 2013 M(s)6.6 Minxian, 2014 M(s)6.5 Ludian and 2017 M(s)7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquakes all occurred in the regions with estimated hypocenter temperature of about 300 C-degrees , whereas the hypocenter's temperature estimated for the 2013 M(s)7. 0 Lushan earthquake is ca. 400 C-degrees , more controlled by regional tectonic stress anomalies in the junction area of the Longmenshan and Xianshuihe fault zones.
Latest Quaternary Active Faulting and Paleoearthquakes on the Southern Segment of the Xiaojiang Fault Zone, SE Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Abstract The Xiaojiang fault zone (XJFZ) is an important part of the Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault system, acting as the eastern boundary of the Chuan-Dian block on the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau and accommodating the lateral extrusion of the block. The faulting activity and paleoseismic history on the southern segment of the XJFZ remain poorly understood. Here, trench excavations and radiocarbon dating revealed that four recent surface-rupturing paleoearthquakes have occurred on the Jianshui fault (JSF) in the southern segment of the XJFZ since ~15370 yr BP. The ages of these events, labeled E4-E1 from oldest to youngest, are limited to the following time ranges: 15360-12755, 10845-6900, 1455-670, and 635-145 yr BP, respectively. The most recent event E1 was most likely the 1606 Jianshui earthquake. These events appear to occur unregularly in time. The time interval between the last two events is 726±235 yr, and the average recurrence interval for all four events is 4589±3132 yr. The deformed strata show that the JSF is characterized kinematically by transtension, which likely respond to the apparent change in the direction of clockwise rotation of the Chuan-Dian block around the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. Combined with the analysis of the neighboring NW-striking faults, our study suggests that the south-southeastward motion of the Chuan-Dian block is likely to be firstly accommodated in part by the right-lateral shear and dip-slip motions of the Qujiang and Shiping faults and continues across the Red River fault zone, then is transmitted southward along the Dien Bien Phu fault. Therefore, the southern segment of the XJFZ plays a dominant role in the tectonic deformation of the southeastern Chuan-Dian block, with a high seismic hazard.

Abstract:The Daliangshan block is located between the Tibetan Plateau and the South China block and has accommodated several M > 6.5 damaging earthquakes in the past ∼600 years, as well as intense tectonic deformation and complex fault structures. In this study, we analyze more than two years of continuous seismic data recorded by a recently deployed dense seismic array. We used a recently developed machine learning-based earthquake location workflow (ESPRH) to construct a high-precision earthquake catalog for the region and obtained 3539 earthquakes, which is approximately three times as many as the National Earthquake Data Center (NEDC) catalog contains. The seismicity distribution not only confirms the nature of the faults marked on the map but also delineates the detailed geometry of the unmapped faults, including the en échelon faults at the northern end of the Zemuhe Fault and the "V"-shaped conjugate fault within the Mabian Fault Zone. The Zemuhe Fault and Lianfeng Fault are prone to hosting large earthquakes according to the derived low b-value. The western side of the Daliangshan block is dominated by strike-slip faults. Combining the fault geometry presented in this paper, we observed that the fault properties on the eastern side are complex. This tectonic phenomenon is attributed to the fact that during the lateral extrusion of the southeastern edge of the Chuandian fragments, the northeastern part of the Daliangshan block was squeezed by the South China block more strongly than its southwestern part. We provide the first precise earthquake catalog for Daliangshan block, which can be used as important seismological data for regional hazard assessment and research on the southeastern (SE) margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

The Focal Depths of the 2008 Panzhihua Earthquake Sequence and the Stress Field in the Source Region

Abstract:Focal depths of the 2008 M S 6.1 Panzhihua earthquake sequence and tectonic stress field in the source area are investigated. Source depths of 24 earthquakes in Panzhihua earthquake sequence with a magnitude M ≥3.0 were determined using the seismic depth phase sPL; additionally, the focal depths of 232 earthquakes were measured by fitting the three-component waveforms of the P and S waves. The source depth of the main shock is ~12 km. The majority of the aftershocks with magnitude M ≥3.0 occurred in the brittle upper crust at the depths range of 12–18 km. Further, the Source mechanisms of the 232 events around the Panzhihua earthquake source area were determined, and the results show that the earthquakes have predominantly strike-slip mechanisms in the Dianzhong Block, but display complexity of the focal mechanisms outside and near the boundary of the Dianzhong block. The 232 earthquake mechanisms from this study are combined with the solutions from the Global Centroid Moment Tensor (GCMT) catalog to derive 2D stress field. The inversion results show that the Dianzhong block is predominantly under a strike slip faulting regime and the direction of the maximum principal compression σ 1 is northwest-southeast (NW-SE)-trending. The distribution is coincide with GPS velocity field. However, orientations of principal stress axes as well as the faulting types change outside and near the Dianzhong block. The results show that the tectonic stress field in the study area is predominantly controlled by the southeast (SE)-trending horizontal movement and clockwise rotation of the Dianzhong block as a result of the eastward movement of eastern Tibetan meeting the old and rigid South China block (SCB). The Panzhihua earthquake ruptured at ~12 km depth where the tectonic stress regime is under the SE-direction horizontal compression and the NE-direction horizontal extension.
Tomography of the Source Zone of the Great 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

Abstract:The mechanism and rupture process of the giant 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake (Mw 9.0) are still poorly understood due to lack of permanent near-field observations. Using seismic arrival times recorded by dense seismograph networks on land and at ocean floor, we determine a detailed seismic tomography model of the megathrust zone beneath the Tohoku forearc. Our results show that the coseismic slip of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake initiated at a boundary between a down-dip high-velocity anomaly and an up-dip low-velocity anomaly. The slow anomaly at shallow depths near the Japan trench may reflect low-rigidity materials that are close to the free surface, resulting in large slip and weak high-frequency radiation. Our new tomographic model can account for not only large slip near the trench but also weak high-frequency radiation from the shallow rupture areas.
Seismic anisotropy in the upper crust around the north segment of Xiaojiang faults in the SE margin of Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The Xiaojiang faults located in the SE margin of the Tibetan Plateau is a fault system of left-lateral strike-slip, striking NS, between the 2nd-order Sichuan-Yunnan block and the 1st-order South China block. The Xiaojiang faults and the surrounding areas are characterized by strong tectonic movements and intense seismic activities. Using seismic data from January 2013 to November 2020 recorded at the stations of the temporary QiaoJia seismic Array (QJ Array), deployed by the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration, this study investigates the upper crustal anisotropy by the shear-wave splitting analysis on small local earthquakes, discusses the deformation patterns in the upper crust in the north segment of the Xiaojiang faults, evaluates the stress distribution in the study area, and analyzes its relationship with the regional tectonic structure. Adopting the data processing technique of shear-wave splitting, a total of 875 effective records were obtained at 50 stations. The mean direction of polarizations of fast shear-wave (PFS) is 162° ± 44° in the study areaand the mean normalized time-delay is 4.96 ± 2.38 ms/km. Based on the spatial distribution of the PFS and the regional geologic structure, the study area is divided into two zones: the zone N and the zone S. The PFS in the zone N is scattered, but the dominant PFS direction is in NNW, which is consistent with the direction of the regional maximum principal compressive stress. In the zone N, there are a few smaller local areas (i.e., subzones A, B, C, and D) in which the orientations of the PFS are quite different from the surrounding area. In the zone S, the dominant directions at most stations are in nearly NS, consistent with the strike of the Xiaojiang fault. It reveals the detailed spatial distribution of seismic anisotropy in the upper crust, as well as in situ principal compressive stress, indicating the influence of the regional stress, the complex tectonic environment, and maybe also the impact of the South China block. It also reveals that there also might be an upper-crust scale of tectonic line at near 26°20′N under Xiaojiang faults, which coincides with the north-south tectonic boundary in the lithospheric anisotropy.

The 1673 Tianzhen Earthquake and Rupture Behavior of the Yanggao‐Tianzhen Fault in the Northern Shanxi Graben, China

Abstract:Studying the causative structure, extent, and magnitude of historical earthquakes is essential for regional seismic hazard assessment. There has been some debate in the literature regarding the epicenter, magnitude, and seismogenic source of the 1673 Tianzhen earthquake, one of the few documented strong earthquakes that occurred in northern Shanxi Graben, China. The Yanggao-Tianzhen Fault (YTF) has long been recognized as a seismogenic fault; however, previous studies have suggested that the fault has not ruptured at the surface for several thousand years. In this work, we investigate fresh surface ruptures along the YTF based on field investigations, unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry, and ground-penetrating radar surveys. Scarp formation at Yanjiabu is bracketed to the last 1.4 +/- 0.6 kyr using optically stimulated luminescence dating. More importantly, we found that the Great Wall at Li'erkou (dated from 1546 CE) was likely faulted, which led us to conclude that the YTF is the causative fault of the 1673 event. Based on our measured fault parameters, the magnitude of the 1673 event was re-estimated to Mw 6.8-7.2, suggesting that previous magnitudes were underestimated. Four trenches were excavated to investigate paleoearthquakes on the fault. Together with previous paleoseismic data, we suggest a bimodal rupture model in which the fault can produce multi-segment rupturing events with large magnitudes, such as the 1673 event, and smaller partial or single-segment rupturing events. Our results shed light on the reassessment of seismic hazards in the densely populated Yangao-Tianzhen Basin and its nearby regions.
Stress State and Fault Strength Variation along Xiaojiang Fault Zone Revealed by Seismicity

Abstract:Xiaojiang Fault (XJF) lies at the southeastern edge of the rhombic Sichuan-Yunnan block, and has an extent for over 400km from Qiaojia to Shanhua district. The Sichuan-Yunnan block experiences clockwise rotation and southwestward escaping from the Tibetan Plateau, producing complex fault geometry and seismicity pattern. The strong variation along fault segments provides a special opportunity to study the relationship between fault zone properties and seismicity pattern. However, the fine structure of XJF remains unknown due to the sparse observational stations.Seismic data has its unique advantage of resolving fault zone properties at depth. We deployed 48 broad-band seismometers along XJF in order to capture detailed seismicity patterns. Our seismic network covers the northern and middle part of XJF, with an average aperture of 20km; the continuous observation from 2015 to 2019 guarantees enough data volume. We detected about 12,000 earthquakes by STA/LTA phase picking and association, and augmented the detection to over 50,000 events with template matching. The relocated catalog has lateral and vertical resolution of 500m and 1km, respectively; the magnitude of completeness (Mc) reaches ML0.3This high-resolution catalog depicts detailed 3D fault geometry. The seismicity shows clustered lateral distribution, with the clusters’ depth extension ranging from 20km at northern to 35km at southern segments. Unmapped orthogonal faults on northern XJF are illuminated by seismicity, which matches orthogonal topography characteristics. Repeating events are detected from 8 seismicity clusters, under a threshold of 5 repeating families, indicating a creeping slip mode, while the separated low-seismicity segments exhibit a high locking rate. Taking advantage of the high detectability, we got reliable b-value estimation for different segments of XJF. The low-b regions correlate well with the margins of locking patches, which points to a high stress concentration. Velocity structure extracted from ambient noise and fault zone head wave present similar spatial variation, which further proved the seismicity pattern. The high heterogeneous characteristics of XJF may produce stress barriers, preventing future earthquake rupture from propagating to a large scale.
Earthquake Focal Mechanisms in Yunnan and Their Inference on the Regional Stress Field

Abstract:Using the broadband records from a regional permanent network, we determined the focal mechanisms of 174 small and moderate earthquakes (3.4 <= M-w <= 6: 0) from January 2008 to March 2011 in Yunnan, China, by fitting the three-component waveforms of P and S waves. Results show that the earthquakes predominantly have strike-slip mechanisms, with occasional normal and very few thrust-faulting events. Most earthquakes occur in the upper crust above 16 km depth. We then derive the regional distribution of the stress field through a damped linear inversion using the focal mechanisms obtained in this study and augmented by the solutions in the Global Centroid Moment Tensor (GCMT) catalog and in Xu et al. (2010). Inversion results suggest that the entire region is predominantly under a strike-slip faulting regime. Orientations of both maximum and minimum principle axes exhibit a clockwise rotational pattern. The axes of maximum compression are oriented roughly north-south, with a gradual change across the region from trending northwest-southeast in the South China block to trending northeast-southwest in the Indo-China block. This pattern is consistent with the surface horizontal velocity derived from geodetic observations. Localized normal faulting stress regions are observed in the Tengchong volcanic zone and in the Qiao-Jia segment of the Xianshuihe-Xiaojiang fault zone.
Heterogeneous Interseismic Coupling Along the Xianshuihe‐Xiaojiang Fault System, Eastern Tibet

Abstract:We use Global Positioning System (GPS) and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data to quantify the interseismic coupling along the Xianshuihe‐Xiaojiang fault system (XXFS). Our results confirm 7–11 mm/a of left‐lateral strike‐slip motion along the XXFS. South of the Shimian County, high interseismic coupling is found down to 20 km‐depth along the Anninghe‐Zemuhe fault. A second 130 km‐long section, highly coupled down to 10–15 km‐depth, is identified along the northern Xiaojiang fault. North of the Kangding County, the Xianshuihe fault appears to be predominantly creeping at depth. Previously identified long‐lasting surface creep following the 1973 M 7.6 Luhuo earthquake has now ended, possibly marking the initiation of a new period of stress accumulation and progressive relocking of the fault. Farther south along the fault, we identify a ∼30 km‐long section (∼30.2°–30.4°N) creeping at ∼7 mm/yr. Furthermore, creep accelerated by ∼2 mm/yr during the 2008–2014 period, possibly as a result of the static Coulomb failure stress increment induced by the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, that occurred ∼200 km northeast of it. The 2014 Mw 5.9 Kangding earthquake occurred along the creeping section at the end of the period of accelerated creep. Finally, taking advantage of the long historical records of past large earthquakes available since 1327, we quantitatively compare the moment budget along the XXFS. Results highlight that along the Anninghe, Zemuhe, and Xiaojiang faults, moment deficit for Mw > 7 earthquakes has now accumulated.

Accurate depth determination of deep earthquake in southern Tibet and its geodynamic implication

Abstract:We have relocated accurately 340 local earthquakes from an earthquake catalogue containing 454 local earthquakes using TomoDD method. The data for relocation came from a 2-D seismic array near Xigaz out of HI-CLIMB project. This array contained 28 broad band seismometers and recorded continuous seismic data from 2004 to 2005. We found the earthquakes were relocated in two separate layers. One layer is near the Earth space, the other is near the Moho. Totally, 21 earthquakes have been relocated at depth of 50 similar to 80 km which was very near the Moho. In order to determine these deep earthquakes occurred in the upper mantle, we preformed the comparison between the real seismogram and the synthetic seismograms at different depth. We found that there was obvious difference between seismograms when the earthquake sources were above or beneath the Moho. As a result, we provided the direct evidence of the existence of mantle earthquake, which was very important for the controversy on the "sandwich" lithospheric rheology model.

Abstract:The complexity of strike-slip fault segmentation affects the initiation, propagation, and termination of earthquake ruptures and the earthquake magnitude. Studying the fault geometry, kinematics, and segmentation provides fundamental knowledge for mitigating earthquake hazards along faults. The Zemuhe, Daliangshan, and Xiaojiang Faults intersect along the eastern boundary of the Tibetan Plateau in the area from Ningnan in Sichuan Province to Qiaojia in Yunnan Province. Although few large earthquakes have occurred on these faults, the relationships between the intersections of these three faults and earthquake rupture behavior in this region are poorly constrained. The interpretation of aerial photographs and detailed field surveys revealed the geometric pattern and fault kinematics in the area of intersection. The distribution patterns and focal depths near the faults were obtained via analysis of seismic data in the area of intersection. The northern segment of the Xiaojiang Fault deviates approximately 25° northwest of Qiaojia, forming a conspicuous bend. The Xiaojiang Fault continues to extend southeast of the Ningnan Basin, where it intersects with the southern segment of the Zemuhe Fault, forming a pull-apart basin approximately 4.5 km wide. The bend and Ningnan pull-apart basin mark the segmented boundary between the Zemuhe Fault and the Xiaojiang Fault, which may prevent the propagation of large earthquake ruptures along the eastern boundary fault. Moreover, the lack of obvious geometric complexity between the Daliangshan Fault and Xiaojiang Fault might hinder the prevention of earthquake rupture propagation. Additionally, our results suggest that different earthquake prevention and disaster reduction measures should be taken for different cities in the region.

Abstract:The mechanical state (i.e., creeping or locked) of fault zone systems implies future seismic hazards. The Anninghe-Daliangshan fault zone in southeastern Tibet serves as the central curved segment of the most seismically active fault system in mainland China, which has produced a remarkable sequence of historical large earthquakes. To better understand its deformation modes and seismic-aseismic slip partitioning, we built a high-resolution earthquake catalog along the Anninghe fault (ANHF) zone and the Daliangshan fault (DLSF) zone utilizing a dense seismic array deployed between 2017 and 2022. The machine-learning based workflow produces ∼16,000 events with various behaviors and patterns located within the two fault zones. We then systematically evaluated and compared the spatiotemporal seismic patterns, seismic slip rate, statistical properties ( b -value, C V value, and nearest neighbor distance distribution), as well as geodetic measurements. Our results infer that the lower seismogenic crust (16–30 km; brittle) of the northern DLSF zone is creeping and releasing elastic strain with abundant microearthquakes; and the northern ANHF behaves similarly. Moving toward the south, the ANHF transits to a locked state, characterized by sparse seismicity, significantly low seismic energy release and a low b -value. Separated around Mianning, the locked segment is prone to generate two ∼M7.3 earthquakes, posing significant seismic hazard to approximately one million residents nearby. Overall, our updated analysis on the creeping northern DLSF and locked southern ANHF could deepen the understanding of seismic behavior along in-land fault system and guide future seismic hazard assessment in densely populated Southwest China.

Abstract:The large-scale faulting and earthquake activities that developed extensively in the Yunnan area are associated with the collision of India and Eurasia. The fine crustal structure can provide a better understanding of the crustal deformation, seismogenic environment, and rupture processes. We performed a new 3-dimensional (3D) P wave velocity structure and seismic relocation using double-difference tomography based on seismic observations. The tomography images show that large-scale low-velocity anomalies spread around the margin of the south Chuan–Dian Block, Xiaojiang fault (XJF), and the Lijiang–Xiaojinhe fault (LJ-XJHF) in the middle and lower crust. There is an obvious high-speed anomaly in the Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP). We infer that the low-velocity anomaly under the LJ-XJHF zone may be derived from the lower crustal flow extruded from the central Tibetan plateau and obstructed by the ELIP, while the velocity anomalies around the XJF might be caused by shear heating, which is associated with the large-deep strike–slip fault and the transmission of stress in the southeast direction. The inversion results also show that the Yangbi earthquake occurred at the NW–SE boundary of high and low velocity from the upper crust to the lower crust, which coincides well with the location of the Yangbi earthquake sequence and the Weixi–Qiaohou fault. Meanwhile, the earthquake relocations show that the aftershocks are mainly distributed at low velocities. All the aforementioned research results indicate that the Yangbi earthquake might be attributed to the intrusion of the soft material flow along the Weixi–Qiaohou fault in the NW–SE direction. These low-viscosity crustal materials would cause brittle fractures and result in NW–SE sinistral strike–slip faults.

Abstract:The Longmenshan (LMS) fault zone is located at the junction of the eastern Tibetan Plateau and the Sichuan Basin, and is of great significance for studying regional tectonics and earthquake hazards. Although regional velocity models are available for the LMS fault zone, there lack high-resolution velocity models. Therefore, a dense array of 240 short-period seismometers was deployed around the central segment of the LMS fault zone for about 30 days for monitoring earthquakes and characterizing fine structures of the fault zone. Considering the large quantity of observed seismic data, the data processing workflow consists of deep learning based automatic earthquake detection, phase arrival picking and association. Compared to the earthquake catalog released from China Earthquake Administration, much more earthquakes are detected by the dense array. Double-difference seismic tomography is adopted to determine Vp, Vs and Vp/Vs models as well as earthquake locations. The checkerboard test shows that the velocity models have the spatial resolutions of ~5 km in the horizontal directions and 2 km in the depth. To the west of the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault (YBF), the Precambrian Pengguan complex is characterized by high velocity and low Vp/Vs values, where most of earthquakes occurred. In comparison, to the east of the YBF, the Upper Paleozoic to Jurassic sediments show low velocity and high Vp/Vs values, where few earthquakes occurred. Our results suggest that the earthquake activity in the LMS fault zone is controlled by the strength of rock compositions. Combined high-resolution velocity models with relocated earthquakes, we are also able to delineate fault geometry for different faults of the LMS fault zone.
Seismic Hazard Assessment of the Mid-Northern Segment of Xiaojiang Fault Zone in Southwestern China Using Scenario Earthquakes

Abstract:ABSTRACT Seismic hazards in the vicinity of the mid-northern segment of the Xiaojiang fault zone were estimated from scenario earthquakes. Based on its history of earthquakes and activity data, the whole segment is considered capable of generating large earthquakes. The characteristics of previous ruptures and the geometric structures of the fault were used to establish seven scenario earthquakes with various strike and length properties. On the basis of focal mechanism parameters and the distribution of previous earthquakes, we determined the values of the source parameters for each scenario using empirical equations. We then used a stochastic finite-fault model to generate the ground motion from the targeted fault. The results show that the vicinity of the mid-northern segment of the Xiaojiang fault zone faces significant seismic hazards. The peak ground acceleration (PGA) values along the fault line are obviously larger than in other areas. Based on the recurrence interval theory, the Qiaojia–Menggu and Xiaoxinjie–Xujiadu areas have a high probability of being struck by large earthquakes in the near future. The results also show that the current design PGA for the near-fault area of the mid-northern segment of Xiaojiang fault zone might not be adequate.

Abstract:SUMMARY We deployed a seismic network near the source region of the 2017 Mw 6.5 Jiuzhaigou earthquake to monitor aftershock activity and to investigate the local fault structure. An aftershock deployment of Array of small Arrays (AsA) and a Geometric Mean Envelop (GME) algorithm are adopted to enhance detection performance. We also adopt a set of association, relocation and matched-filter techniques to obtain a detailed regional catalogue. 16 742 events are detected and relocated, including 1279 aftershocks following the Mw 4.8 aftershock. We develop a joint inversion algorithm utilizing locations of event clusters and focal mechanisms to determine the geometry of planar faults. Six segments were finally determined, in which three segments are related to the Huya fault reflecting a change in fault dip direction near the main shock hypocentre, while the other segments reflect branches showing orthogonal and conjugate geometries with the Huya fault. Aftershocks were active on branching faults between the Huya and Minjiang faults indicating that the main shock may have ruptured both major faults. We also resolve a fault portion with ‘weak strength’ near the main shock hypocentre, which is characterized by limited coseismic slips, concentrated afterslip, low aftershock activities, high b-value and high sensitivity to stress changes. These phenomena can be explained by fault frictional properties at conditional stable sliding status, which may be related to the localized high pore-fluid pressure produced by the fluid intrusion.
