Abstract:The effect of electro-dewatering (ED) pretreatment on methane emission, methanogens, methanotrophs and related functional genes was investigated in sewage sludge composting. Results showed that ED pretreatment reduced cumulative methane emission by 96.66% relative to mechanical dewatering (MD) sludge during 60 days composting. Methanobacterium and Methylococcaceae were dominant methanogen and methanotroph in both composting systems. ED pretreatment reduced Methanobacterium by 10.83 and 23.88%, but increased Methylococcaceae by 3.23% and 4.30% on Day-0 and Day-30, respectively. ED pretreatment eliminated mcrA and inhibited methane production in the initial period of composting. ED pretreatment promoted soluble methane monooxygenase and methanol dehydrogenase in the thermophilic and curing period. ED reduced moisture and significantly increased pH, DOC and NH4+-N concentration of sludge. Redundancy analysis showed moisture, DOC and temperature were dominant factors affecting Methanobacterium, mcrA, mmoX, and maxF in ED sludge composting. This study proposes a novel method to essentially eliminate methane emission in composting system.
