Abstract:In conclusion, we presented a novel pure hydrogel that contains quaternary ammonium side chains and can maintain high stretchability and conductivity at subzero temperatures or after prolonged exposure to a low humidity atmosphere even without being incorporated with any additives. The quaternary ammonium groups can form molecular clusters with water molecules to replace hydrogen bonds between water molecules, therefore significantly reducing the freezing point and preventing water evaporation. Owing to their excellent mechanical and conductive properties under arid and low temperature environments, the PATAC hydrogels can be further fabricated into capacitive multifunctional sensors with outstanding electrochemical and mechanical stability that can detect finger touch and human motions at −30°C or 60% RH. This work proposes a new strategy to fabricate anti-freezing and anti-dehydration hydrogels without any additives and hydrogel-based wearable sensors with freeze and desiccation tolerance. The design principle offers a new insight into the design of wearable devices applicable in different environments.
