Abstract:The breakthrough of gas out from saturated bentonite is related to safety of nuclear waste repositories, so it is of important theoretical and practical significance to study the migration of gas in saturated Gaomiaozi bentonite. In this paper, the permeability test of compacted and water saturated Gaomiaozi bentonite samples without interface under a confining pressure of 5 MPa was carried out to analyze the variation of permeability of bentonite, and the pressure, flow rate and mass fraction of argon at outlet with the injected argon pressure. On this basis, the behavior of migration of argon in bentonite was discussed, and the mechanism of breakthrough of argon out from bentonite was revealed. The results show that the transportation of argon before breakthrough is controlled by both capillary pressure and dilatational stress. When the injected argon pressure is close to the confining pressure, the gas flow rate increases suddenly due to the enlargement of pores caused by the dilatational stress, and gas breakthrough followed. Through the penetration test of bentonite samples with interface under the same test conditions, the influence of interface on breakthrough pressure was analyzed. The results show that the breakthrough pressure of the sample with interface is lower than that of the sample without interface. It is concluded that although the bentonite with interfaces may heal after a long time of water saturation, the impact of interfaces on the mechanical properties cannot be ignored. Furthermore, the interfaces make the strength of the bentonite weaker.
