Abstract:Hydrothermal conversion is a promising method to produce carbon materials and chemicals from biomass. However, there is a lack of understanding of the evolution of biomass during the hydrothermal reactions. This study investigates the hydrothermal conversion of two real biomass feedstocks (poplar leaves and rice straw) and proposes the evolution pathways with comprehensive characterization methods, including elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N-2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Both real biomass feedstocks were converted into small pieces with surface modification (room temperature to 100 degrees C), carbon spheres with aromatization (100-200 degrees C), and carbon spheres evolution (<100 nm) with a slight aromatization (200-300 degrees C). Poplar leaves and rice straw had a similar chemical reaction pathway, while the transformation of morphologies was different due to the shape and size of the carbon spheres.
