Abstract:In this work, borosilicate glasses were doped with strontium oxide and zirconium dioxide to simulate the effect of component changes caused by beta decay of 90Sr on the properties of vitrified materials during geological disposal. Hardness and modulus were measured. Grazing incident X-Ray Diffraction (GIXRD), infrared, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Raman spectra were used to characterize the microcosmic structure. With the increase of zirconium dioxide concentration, the hardness and modulus decreased initially and then saturated, an increase of the [BO3] unit was observed, and the number of Si-O-Si bonds decreased. The Q3(Zr) units appeared as soon as the incorporation of zirconium dioxide. One can conclude that the real effect of beta decay cannot be simply simulated by external electron irradiation, and the composition changes caused by the decay should not be ignored.
