Abstract:AbstractIntegrated photonic‐assisted instantaneous frequency measurements (IFMs) have been extensively explored and widely used in 5G/6G communications, navigation, automotive control, and radar systems. They offer significant advantages such as wide frequency, low power consumption, and immunity to electromagnetic interference compared to electrical solutions. As data traffic in high‐speed wireless communication systems and the operation bandwidth of advanced radar systems continue to grow, there is an urgent need for large instantaneous bandwidths and accurate frequency measurements to ensure signal integrity and efficient bandwidth utilization. However, achieving wide‐bandwidth and high‐precision measurements simultaneously with photonic IFMs remains challenging. Here, an integrated photonic IFM system based on a thin‐film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform is demonstrated that can dynamically identify signals with wide‐band frequency changes. The system incorporates a wide‐bandwidth Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a high‐Q Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI)‐coupled microring resonator (MRR) for double‐sideband suppressed‐carrier (DSB‐SC) modulation. Additionally, it includes dual‐stage frequency discriminator based on asymmetric MZIs (AMZIs) for both coarse wide‐band and accurate narrow‐band measurements. The proposed IFM system operates over a wide‐band frequency up to 67 GHz with a low root mean square (RMS) error of less than 123 MHz. This work opens up a path for high‐performance broadband microwave photonic applications using TFLN platform.

Abstract:A tunable high-Q Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) coupled micro-ring resonator (MRR) with a large free-spectra range (FSR) is demonstrated by introducing multimode waveguides assisted with modified Euler curve, both phase and coupling coefficient can be tuned. Utilization of the silicon micro-ring enables a microwave photonic band-pass filter with a 3-dB bandwidth tuned from 150 MHz to 2 GHz, and central frequency thermally tuned from 500 MHz to 40 GHz.

Abstract:In this article, a tunable four-stage high-intermediate-frequency (IF) bandpass filter (BPF) chip using inductors with a $Q$ compensation digital resistor array (QCDRA) is presented. The high-IF BPF intends to filter out-of-band spurs and distortions for radio frequency analog-to-digital converter (RF-ADC) or RF digital-to-analog converter (RF-DAC), which leverages programmable $Q$ -enhanced inductors to achieve ultrawide programmable bandwidth. The fabricated filter center frequency can be programed from 1.3 to 1.7 GHz with a 50-MHz resolution, which also supports a tunable signal passband from 25 to 1000 MHz with 25-MHz frequency step, equivalent to a 1.5%–67% tunable fractional bandwidth when centering at 1.5 GHz. The BPF exhibits $<$ 50-ns signal bandwidth program settling time, suitable for agile radio applications. To ensure an accurate filtering, a three-point calibration scheme is proposed to auto-calibrate filter response due to temperature variations. The high-IF BPF chip is fabricated in a 65-nm bulk CMOS process with 80-mA current consumption, which achieves a 150.94-dB normalized dynamic range (DR). To the authors’ best knowledge, this high-IF BPF has demonstrated the widest fractional bandwidth programmability.

Abstract:A tunable four stage active RF band-pass filter (BPF) adopting Q-enhanced technique is presented in this paper. The center frequency can be programmed from 1.3 to 1.7 GHz with 50 MHz resolution. The proposed BPF can also support a tunable signal passband from 25 to 1000 MHz with 25 MHz tuning step, equivalent to a 1.5-67% tunable fractional bandwidth when centering at 1.5 GHz. The RF BPF achieves 148.4 dB normalized dynamic range (DR). The chip is fabricated in a standard 65 nm CMOS process with 80 mA current consumption. To the authors' best knowledge, this RF BPF has demonstrated the widest fractional bandwidth programmability.

Abstract:A wideband‐tunable silicon microwave photonic filter, which monolithically integrates a dual‐drive MachZehnder modulator, cascaded ultrahigh‐Q MachZehnder‐interferometer‐coupled microring resonators, and a photodetector, is demonstrated. The design shows a wide frequency‐tuning range of 2–40 GHz as well as a 3 dB bandwidth‐tuning range of 0.15–3 GHz. This work offers a promising option for high‐performance microwave photonics systems realization. Microwave photonic filters are a key fundamental subsystem in microwave photonics. A wideband‐tunable on‐chip microwave photonic filter (MPF), which monolithically integrates a dual‐drive Mach‐Zehnder modulator (DDMZM), is proposed with ultrahigh‐Q Mach–Zehnder‐interferometer (MZI)‐coupled microring resonators (MRRs) in cascade and a high‐speed photodetector (PD). It is the first time an MPF has been developed by introducing U‐bend‐MZI‐coupled MRRs whose resonance wavelength and 3 dB bandwidth are tunable. In particular, the ultrahigh‐Q U‐bend‐MZI‐coupled MRRs are realized with ultralow loss broadened silicon waveguides based on a modified Euler curve. For the fabricated U‐bend‐MZI‐coupled MRRs, which have an effective radius of 29 μm, the Q‐factor is as high as 1.3 × 106, while the free spectral range (FSR) is as large as 113 GHz. Furthermore, the introduction of two cascaded U‐bend‐MZI‐coupled MRRs enables the MPF to have flat‐top bandstop (or bandpass) responses with a high extinction ratio (ER) of 20–35 dB as well as a tunable 3 dB bandwidth of 0.15–3 GHz. Meanwhile, the central frequency can be tuned thermally from 2 to 40 GHz. The work provides a feasible route to realize a compact, high spectral resolution, and wideband‐tunable MPF on silicon, enabling a range of RF applications from wireless communication to flexible high‐frequency microwave photonic signal processing.

Abstract:In this paper, a tunable high finesse microfilter is described, which is based on microfiber loop resonator (MLR). The length of microfiber loop could be controlled by a small cylindrical piezoelectric ceramic. As we calculated, this resonator has the maximum Q factor of 2400 and the finesse of 4.3. MLR filter was demonstrated that the maximum extinction ratio is about 10dB, and the free spectral range variation range could be more than 100GHz. This device could also be integrated into a smaller size due to the bigger radius of curvature of the microfiber.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Integrated microwave photonic filters (IMPFs) are capable of offering unparalleled performances in terms of superb spectral fineness, broadband, and more importantly, the reconfigurability, which encounter the trend of the next-generation wireless communication. However, to achieve high reconfigurability, previous works should adopt complicated system structures and modulation formats, which put great pressure on power consumption and controlment, and, therefore, impede the massive deployment of IMPF. Here, we propose a streamlined architecture for a wideband and highly reconfigurable IMPF on the silicon photonics platform. For various practical filter responses, to avoid complex auxiliary devices and bias drift problems, a phase-modulated flexible sideband cancellation method is employed based on the intensity-consistent single-stage-adjustable cascaded-microring (ICSSA-CM). The IMPF exhibits an operation band extending to millimeter-wave (≥30 GHz), and other extraordinary performances including high spectral resolution of 220 MHz and large rejection ratio of 60 dB are obtained. Moreover, Gb/s-level RF wireless communications are demonstrated for the first time towards real-world scenarios. The proposed IMPF provides broadband flexible spectrum control capabilities, showing great potential in the next-generation wireless communication.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable broadband photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a silicon microring resonator. This scheme utilizes the thermal nonlinear effect of the silicon microring to change the electrical phase of the RF signal with a wide tuning range. A prototype of the phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated for a 40-GHz signal with a 0-4.6-rad tuning range.

Robust Reconfigurable Radiofrequency Photonic Filters Based on a Single Silicon In-Phase/quadrature Modulator

Abstract:Combining integrated photonics and radiofrequency (RF) signals in the optical domain can help overcome the limitations of traditional RF systems. However, it is challenging to achieve environmentally insensitive filtering in wireless communications using integration schemes. In this report, the performance of robust RF filters based on a single silicon in-phase/quadrature modulator with significantly improved temperature and optical carrier wavelength sensitivities, which were suppressed by more than three orders of magnitude compared with those of silicon resonators, was experimentally evaluated. Upconversion and the processing of signals were simultaneously realized on the modulator by setting the relative phases of the arms and the bias voltages. Moreover, the filters can be reconfigured as low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or band-stop filters. From 25 to 75 °C, the center frequency variation was within 0.2 GHz. From 1500 to 1600 nm, the center frequency variation was within 2 GHz. The proposed scheme allows for filtering and reconfiguration without the use of optical processing modules such as resonators or delay lines, thus providing a novel approach to signal processing and a new robust filter for scenarios with dynamic environments.

Abstract:The creation of high-performance narrowband filters is of great interest for many RF-signal processing applications. To this end, numerous schemes for electronic, MEMS-based, and microwave photonic filters have been demonstrated. Filtering schemes based on microwave photonic systems offer superior flexibility and tunability to traditional RF filters. However, these optical-based filters are typically limited to GHz-widths and often have large RF insertion losses, posing challenges for integration into high-fidelity radiofrequency circuits. In this article, we demonstrate a novel type of microwave filter that combines the attractive features of microwave photonic filters with high-Q phononic signal processing using a photonic-phononic emit-receive process. Through this process, a RF signal encoded on a guided optical wave is transduced onto a GHz-frequency acoustic wave, where it may be filtered through shaping of acoustic transfer functions before being re-encoded onto a spatially separate optical probe. This emit-receive functionality, realized in an integrated silicon waveguide, produces MHz-bandwidth band-pass filtering while supporting low RF insertion losses necessary for high dynamic range in a microwave photonic link. We also demonstrate record-high internal efficiency for emit-receive operations of this type, and show that the emit-receive operation is uniquely suitable for the creation of serial filter banks with minimal loss of fidelity. This photonic-phononic emitter-receiver represents a new method for low-distortion signal-processing in an integrated all-silicon device.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel reconfigurable photonic RF filter which can achieve theoretically infinite Q factors. Single sinc-shape passband with Q = 634 and flat-top passband with Q = 76 are demonstrated experimentally when the passband center is tuned at 18 GHz.

Abstract:As a basic optical filter configuration, A Fabry-Perot (FP) resonator has found extensive applications in laser excitation, sensing, and optical communication. Here, we propose an on-chip fully tunable silicon photonic FP filter based on multi-mode waveguide. The proposed FP filter has a low-loss multi-mode rib waveguide and two Sagnac loop mirrors (SLMs), which is of help to achieving a high Q-factor. By controlling the voltages applied to the micro-heaters placed on top of the multi-mode waveguide and directional couplers of the SLMs, the effective length of the cavity and the reflectivity of the SLMs can be tuned, leading to the fully tuning in resonance wavelength and bandwidth. A chip is designed and fabricated, which has a narrow passband of 2.7 pm, corresponding to a loaded Q-factor of . By controlling the voltages, its resonance wavelength can be tuned in a range of 0.27 nm, and the 3-dB bandwidth can be tuned from 2.0 to 25.1 pm. With the use of the fabricated chip, a fully tunable microwave photonic filter is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed FP filter has a high Q-factor and flexible tunability, which holds potential in the applications of microwave photonic signal processing systems and optical communication networks.

Abstract:Microwave photonic filters (MPFs) with only one ultra-narrow passband are able to provide high frequency selectivity and wide spectral range, and they are of great importance in radio-frequency (RF) signal processing. However, currently all MPFs are limited by trade-offs between key parameters such as spectral resolution and range, tunability, and stability. Here, we report the first demonstration of a single passband MPF with unprecedented performance including ultrahigh spectral resolution of 650 kHz, 0–40 GHz spectral range, and high stability of center frequency drifting within ±50 kHz. This record performance is accomplished by breaking the amplitude equality of a phase-modulated signal via a Brillouin dynamic grating (BDG) which has an ultra-narrow reflection spectrum of sub-MHz. The results point to new ways of creating high performance microwave photonic systems, such as satellite and mobile communications, radars, and remote-sensing systems.
