Abstract:This paper describes a generalized approach for the selective electrocatalytic C-C bond splitting in aliphatic alcohols at low temperature in aqueous state, with ethanol as an example. We show that selective C-C bond cleavage, leading to carbon dioxide, is possible in high pH aqueous media at low overpotentials. This improved selectivity and activity is achieved using a solution-born co-catalyst based on Pb(IV) acetate, which controls the mode of the ethanol adsorption so as to facilitate direct activation of the C-C bond. The simultaneously formed under-potentially deposited (UPD) Pb and surface lead hydroxide change the functionality of the catalyst surface for efficient promotion of CO oxidation. The resulting catalyst retains an unprecedented ability to sustain the full oxidation reaction pathway on an extended time scale of hours as opposed to minutes without addition of Pb(IV) acetate.

Abstract:Achieving the selective electrocatalytic activation of C( sp 3 )–C( sp 3 ) and C( sp 3 )−H bonds is key to enabling the electricity-driven synthesis of chemicals, the sustainable upgrading of plastics and the development of fuel cells operating on energy-dense liquid fuels. When exposed to electrodes under oxidative bias, hydrocarbons undergo both C–C bond fragmentation and oxygenation. Currently, we lack control over the bifurcation of these pathways. Here we provide insights into the complex network of alkyl transformation reactions, showing that under oxidizing potentials, adsorbed butane transforms to adsorbed CH x fragments, which can be desorbed as methane before oxidation to adsorbed CO. Identifying the branchpoint between C‒C fragmentation and oxygenation allowed us to steer selectivity by applying pulsed potentials tailored to the desorption potential of specific adsorbates and the kinetics of intermediate oxidation. Our findings provide design criteria for improved fuel cell catalysts and open the door to selective C‒C cleavage in electrosynthetic pathways.

Abstract:The C-O bond cleavage for activation of alcohols is synthetically useful and practically challenging. This work describes carbazate as a new type of electrochemically activated alkylating agent derived from ubiquitous alcohols for direct functionalization of heteroarenes under mild electrolytic conditions. The simple undivided cell at low oxidative potentials with carbon/platinum electrode set-ups offers excellent substrate tolerance, affording a variety of primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl-decorated heterocycles in good chemical yields. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical deoxyalkylation reaction has been investigated.

Abstract:Combined computational and experimental studies elucidated the distinctive mechanistic features of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H oxygenation. A sequential electrochemical-chemical (EC) process was identified for the formation of an amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate. The synthesis, characterization, cyclic voltammetry studies, and stoichiometric reactions of the related amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate suggested that a second on-cycle electro-oxidation occurs on the amidylcobalt(iii) species, which leads to a formal Co(iv) intermediate. This amidylcobalt(iv) intermediate is essentially a cobalt(iii) complex with one additional single electron distributed on the coordinating heteroatoms. The radical nature of the coordinating pivalate allows the formal Co(iv) intermediate to undergo a novel carboxylate-assisted HAT mechanism to cleave the arene C-H bond, and a CMD mechanism could be excluded for a Co(iii/i) catalytic scenario. The mechanistic understanding of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H bond activation highlights the multi-tasking electro-oxidation and the underexplored reaction channels in electrochemical transition metal catalysis.

Abstract:Lignin presents as a renewable aromatic resource for value-added chemical production. However, it remains challenging to cleavage C-C bonds in lignin under ambient conditions. Electrochemical oxidation as a renewable energy technology presents an attractive alternative to traditional processes. Herein, we report an efficient electrocatalytic strategy for C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage of the beta-O-4 linkage in lignin model compounds at room temperature with platinum as the anode and tert-butyl hydroperoxides (t-BuOOH in water, 70% aq soln) as the oxidants, exhibiting high yields for the aromatic aldehydes and phenols. This electrocatalytic strategy is demonstrated to be highly selective for the transformation of a broad selection of lignin model dimers, polymeric compound, and even real lignin into the desired aromatic aldehydes. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction may proceed via a C-beta radical process involving a peroxide intermediate. This work opens up opportunities in electrocatalysis to selectively break C-alpha-C-beta bonds and transform lignin to valuable chemicals under ambient conditions by using renewable electricity.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of C-C linkages is the key and a challenge for lignin degradation to harvest value-added aromatic compounds. To this end, electrocatalytic oxidation presents a promising technique by virtue of mild reaction conditions and strong sustainability. However, the existing electrocatalysts (traditional bulk metal and metal oxides) for C-C bond oxidative cleavage suffer from poor selectivity and low product yields. We show for the first time that atomically dispersed Pt-N3C1 sites planted on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Pt-1/N-CNTs), constructed via a stepwise polymerization-carbonization-electrostatic adsorption strategy, are highly active and selective toward C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage in beta-O-4 model compounds under ambient conditions. Pt-1/N-CNTs exhibits 99% substrate conversion with 81% yield of benzaldehyde, which is exceptional and unprecedented compared with previously reported electrocatalysts. Moreover, Pt-1/N-CNTs using only 0.41 wt % Pt achieved a much higher benzaldehyde yield than those of the state-of-the-art bulk Pt electrode (100 wt % Pt) and commercial Pt/C catalyst (20 wt % Pt). Systematic experimental investigation together with density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggests that the superior performance of Pt-1/N-CNTs arises from the atomically dispersed Pt-N3C1 sites facilitating the formation of a key C-beta radical intermediate, further inducing a radical/radical cross-coupling path to break the C-alpha-C-beta bond. This work opens up opportunities in lignin valorization via a green and sustainable electrochemical route with ultralow noble metal usage.

Abstract:The activation of C–H bonds is a central challenge in organic chemistry and usually a key step for the retro-synthesis of functional natural products due to the high chemical stability of C–H bonds. Electrochemical methods are a powerful alternative for C–H activation, but this approach usually requires high overpotential and homogeneous mediators. Here, we design electron-deficient W 2 C nanocrystal-based electrodes to boost the heterogeneous activation of C–H bonds under mild conditions via an additive-free, purely heterogeneous electrocatalytic strategy. The electron density of W 2 C nanocrystals is tuned by constructing Schottky heterojunctions with nitrogen-doped carbon support to facilitate the preadsorption and activation of benzylic C–H bonds of ethylbenzene on the W 2 C surface, enabling a high turnover frequency (18.8 h −1 ) at a comparably low work potential (2 V versus SCE). The pronounced electron deficiency of the W 2 C nanocatalysts substantially facilitates the direct deprotonation process to ensure electrode durability without self-oxidation. The efficient oxidation process also boosts the balancing hydrogen production from as-formed protons on the cathode by a factor of 10 compared to an inert reference electrode. The whole process meets the requirements of atomic economy and electric energy utilization in terms of sustainable chemical synthesis.

A diverse range of deconstructive functionalization processes is described, including discussion on the electrochemical reaction conditions employed, scope and limitations, and reaction mechanisms, in addition to highlighting future opportunities in this burgeoning area of sustainable synthesis.

Abstract:The selective cleavage of C-C bonds is of fundamental interest because it provides an alternative approach to traditional chemical synthesis, which is focused primarily on building up molecular complexity. However, current C-C cleavage methods provide only limited opportunities. For example, selective C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond cleavage generally relies on the use of transition-metal to open strained ring systems or iminyl and alkoxy radicals to induce β-fragmentation. Here we show that by merging photoredox catalysis with copper catalysis, we are able to employ α-trisubstituted carboxylic acids as substrates and achieve consecutive C-C bond cleavage, resulting in the scission of the inert β-CH2 group. The key transformation relies on the decarboxylative oxidation process, which could selectively generate in-situ formed alkoxy radicals and trigger consecutive C-C bond cleavage. This complicated yet interesting reaction might help the development of other methods for inert C(sp3)-C(sp3) bond cleavage.

Abstract:Lignin, which is an important component of biomass in nature and is constantly produced in industry, becomes potential raw material for sustainable production of fine chemicals and biofuels. Electrocatalysis has been extensively involved in the activation of simple molecules and cleavage-recasting of complex scaffolds in an elegant environment. As such, electrocatalytic cleavage of C−C(O) in β -O-4 model molecules of lignin to value-added chemicals has received much attention in recent years. This mini-review introduces various anodes (e.g., Pb, Pt, Ni, Co., and Ir) developed for electro-oxidative lignin degradation (EOLD) under mild conditions. Attention was placed to understand the conversion pathways and involved reaction mechanisms during EOLD, with emphasis on the product distribution caused by different electrodes.

Abstract:Chemical synthesis typically relies on reactions that generate complexity through elaboration of simple starting materials. Less common are deconstructive strategies toward complexity-particularly those involving carbon-carbon bond scission. Here, we introduce one such transformation: the hydrodealkenylative cleavage of C(sp3)-C(sp2) bonds, conducted below room temperature, using ozone, an iron salt, and a hydrogen atom donor. These reactions are performed in nonanhydrous solvents and open to the air; reach completion within 30 minutes; and deliver their products in high yields, even on decagram scales. We have used this broadly functionality tolerant transformation to produce desirable synthetic intermediates, many of which are optically active, from abundantly available terpenes and terpenoid-derived precursors. We have also applied it in the formal total syntheses of complex molecules.

Abstract:It is challenging to realize the selective C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 linkages for production of high‐value aromatic chemicals due to its intrinsic inertness and complex structure. Here we report a light‐driven, chlorine‐radical‐based protocol to realize the oxidative C‐C bond cleavage in various lignin model compounds catalyzed by commercially available TPT and CaCl2, achieving high conversion and good to high product yields at room temperature. Mechanistic studies reveal that the preferential activation of Cβ‐H bond facilitates the oxidation and C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 model via chlorine radical. Furthermore, this method is also applicable to the depolymerization of natural lignin extracts, furnishing the aromatic oxygenates from the cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds. This study provides experimental foundations to the depolymerization and valorization of lignin into high value‐added aromatic compounds.

Abstract:The cleavage of C-C bonds has been a great challenge owing to their thermodynamic and kinetic stability. To date, the progress made in this area has mainly relied on the reaction of small rings, which is driven by releasing ring strain. Encouragingly, more and more examples of the cleavage of non-strained C-C bonds have been reported. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the transition-metal-catalyzed C-C bond activation of relatively stable and unstrained molecules that involves the formation of organometallic intermediates. In the first section we focus on the C-C bond activation achieved through beta-carbon elimination, and in the second section the oxidative addition of the C-C bond to low-valent metal is summarized in detail.

Abstract:The aerobic oxidative cleavage of C–C bonds is an attractive and sustainable route for constructing valuable molecules such as esters, nitriles, and amides. Traditionally homogeneous catalytic systems for C-C cleavage required harsh conditions, stoichiometric oxidants, and noble metal catalysts to overcome the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers of C–C bonds, imposing environmental concerns of the transformation. Therefore, developing efficient, low-cost, and environmentally benign methods for the C–C bond cleavage is of great importance and a cutting-edge area in modern chemistry. This feature article summarized the sustainable aerobic oxidative C–C cleavage method developed by our group in the past 5 years. Fundamental principles in catalyst design, substrate scope, and in-sight mechanism for C–C cleavage were also discussed.

Abstract:We report a dual transition metal electrocatalytic approach for C(sp3)–C(sp3) bond cleavage and arylation of cyclic alcohols, providing an efficient and sustainable method for site-specific arylation of ketones. The reaction involves electrophotochemical cerium-catalysed generation of alkoxyl radicals from readily accessible alcohols. Subsequently, homolytic cleavage of the β-C–C bond leads to the generation of carbon-centered radicals that could be effectively utilized by nickel catalysis powered by cathode reduction to deliver the remote arylated ketone products.
