Abstract:Producing a specific number of vocalizations with purpose requires a sophisticated combination of numerical abilities and vocal control. Whether this capacity exists in animals other than humans is yet unknown. We show that crows can flexibly produce variable numbers of one to four vocalizations in response to arbitrary cues associated with numerical values. The acoustic features of the first vocalization of a sequence were predictive of the total number of vocalizations, indicating a planning process. Moreover, the acoustic features of vocal units predicted their order in the sequence and could be used to read out counting errors during vocal production.

Abstract:It was recently found that not only tool-specialized New Caledonian crows, but also Goffin cockatoos can manufacture physical objects in accordance with a mental template. That is, they can emulate features of existing objects when they manufacture new items. Both species spontaneously ripped pieces of card into large strips if they had previously learned that a large template was rewarded, and small strips when they previously learned that a small template was rewarded. Among New Caledonian crows, this cognitive ability was suggested as a potential mechanism underlying the transmission of natural tool designs. Here, we tested for the same ability in another non-specialised tool user–Hooded crows ( Corvus cornix ). Crows were exposed to pre-made template objects, varying first in colour and then in size, and were rewarded only if they chose pre-made objects that matched the template. In subsequent tests, birds were given the opportunity to manufacture versions of these objects. All three crows ripped paper pieces from the same colour material as the rewarded template, and, crucially, also manufactured objects that were more similar in size to previously rewarded, than unrewarded, templates, despite the birds being rewarded at random in both tests. Therefore, we found the ability to manufacture physical objects relative to a mental template in yet another bird species not specialized in using or making foraging tools in the wild, but with a high level of brain and cognitive development.

Abstract:Vocal communication is widespread in animals, with vocal repertoires of varying complexity. The social complexity hypothesis predicts that species may need high vocal complexity to deal with complex social organization (e.g. have a variety of different interindividual relations). We quantified the vocal complexity of two geographically distant captive colonies of rooks, a corvid species with complex social organization and cognitive performances, but understudied vocal abilities. We quantified the diversity and gradation of their repertoire, as well as the inter-individual similarity at the vocal unit level. We found that males produced call units with lower diversity and gradation than females, while song units did not differ between sexes. Surprisingly, while females produced highly similar call repertoires, even between colonies, each individual male produced almost completely different call repertoires from any other individual. These findings question the way male rooks communicate with their social partners. We suggest that each male may actively seek to remain vocally distinct, which could be an asset in their frequently changing social environment. We conclude that inter-individual similarity, an understudied aspect of vocal repertoires, should also be considered as a measure of vocal complexity.

Exploring Neural Dynamics in the Auditory Telencephalon of Crows using Functional Ultrasound Imaging

Abstract:Crows, known for advanced cognitive abilities and vocal communication, rely on intricate auditory systems. While the neuroanatomy of corvid auditory pathways is partially explored, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are largely unknown. This study used functional ultrasound imaging (fUSi) to investigate sound-induced cerebral blood volume (CBV) changes in the field L complex of the crow's auditory telencephalon, a functional analogue to the mammalian auditory cortex. FUSi revealed frequency-specific CBV responses, showing a tonotopic organization within the field L complex, with low frequencies in the posterior-dorsal region and high frequencies in the anterior-ventral region, similar to neuronal patterns reported in other songbirds. The responses were more robust when the crows were awake compared to when they were anesthetized. Machine learning analyses showed fUSi signals could be used to classify sound types accurately. Shorter stimuli reliably triggered transient CBV increases, while longer sounds resulted in variable responses, including negative deflections. This variability in CBV responses suggests a delineation of subregions within the field L complex with the central region (L2) as the primary processing hub and outer regions (L1, L3) integrating auditory information. These findings highlight the potential of fUSi for providing high-resolution insights into functional systems in corvids, enabling future exploration of task-related cognitive dynamics.

Abstract:Inter-individual recognition is crucial for stable social relationships and it is frequently mediated through vocal signatures. In socially complex species, recognition may additionally require additional levels corresponding to other layers of social organisation such as the pair, family, social group or colony. Additional vocal signatures may encode these different levels of social organisations for recognition. We investigated this hypothesis in the calls of the rook ( ), a highly social corvid. Rooks form large breeding colonies where multiple pairs nest in clusters. We recorded the calls of five colonies located in France and in Great Britain, including both wild and captive colonies. To exclude variations due to different call types, we focused on the loud nest call produced exclusively by nesting females during the breeding season. We compared the acoustic distance of calls from each individual and between individuals at various levels of nest proximity, i.e. from the same nest cluster, from different nest clusters, from colonies within the same country, and from colonies in different countries. The only vocal signatures we found were at the individual level, but not at the nest cluster or colony level. This suggests a lack of vocal convergence in this species, at least for the nest call, which may be important for pair recognition in large colonies. Further studies should now evaluate if types of calls other than the nest call better carry vocal signatures as markers of different layers of sociality in this species, or if vocal divergence is a more general vocal phenomenon. In that case, applying new methods of monitoring vocal signatures in wild individuals should help understand the cognitive, social and environmental mechanisms underlying this vocal singularisation.

Group composition and dynamics in American Crows: insights into an unusual cooperative breeder

Abstract:Breeding pairs of American Crows ( ) in Stillwater, OK, lived with 0-10 auxil-iaries in territories distributed throughout public, campus, commercial, and residential areas. Unpaired crows moved easily among groups throughout the year, but commonly did so during the two months or so preceding the onset of nesting across the population, and the week or so preceding hatching within groups. In 2001 and 2002, pre-hatch group size ranged from 2-10 (mean = 4.5 in both years), and auxiliaries included a male sibling, social and genetic offspring, step-offspring, half-siblings, and unrelated immigrants of both sexes, ranging in age from 1 to at least five years old. Twenty nine percent of pre-hatch auxiliaries dispersed out of groups at hatch-ing (for half, only temporarily), including all females unrelated to female breeders. Post-hatch group size ranged from 2-6, with means of 3.7 in both years, and the post-hatch auxiliary popula-tion differed in composition from the pre-hatch population: whereas post-hatch male auxiliaries included a sibling, half siblings, and unrelated immigrants in addition to social and genetic sons, all post-hatch female auxiliaries were the social and genetic daughters of female breeders, and all but one (the same individual in both years) were also the social and genetic daughters of male breeders. Crows in Stillwater delayed breeding for one or more years beyond sexual maturity, despite the availability of space and members of the opposite sex. Individual dispersal decisions by unpaired crows, and the behavior of paired territory owners, did not follow patterns described for other cooperative breeders. We found little support for extant theories regarding the formation, com-position, and maintenance of avian groups, and discuss aspects of the lives of crows that may have contributed to the complex and benign nature of this population’s society. Abstract:Musical and rhythmical abilities are poorly documented in non-human animals. Most of the existing studies focused on synchronisation performances to external rhythms. In humans, studies demonstrated that rhythmical processing (e. g. rhythm discrimination or synchronisation to external rhythm) is dependent of an individual measure: the individual tempo. It is assessed by asking participants to produce an endogenous isochronous rhythm (known as spontaneous motor tempo) without any specific instructions nor temporal cue. In non-human animal literature, studies describing spontaneous and endogenous production of motor tempo without any temporal clue are rare. This exploratory study aims to describe and compare the spontaneous motor tempo of cockatiels and jungle crows. Data were collected on spontaneous beak drumming behaviours of birds housed in laboratory. Inter beak strokes intervals were calculated from sound tracks of videos. The analyses revealed that inter beak strokes intervals are non-randomly distributed intervals and are isochronous. Recorded spontaneous motor tempos are significantly different among some cockatiels. Since we could only conduct statistical analysis with one corvid, we cannot conclude about this species. Our results suggest that cockatiels and jungle crows have individual tempos, thus encouraging further investigations.

Abstract:Vocal communication in social animals involves the production and perception of various calls that ethologists categorize into call-types, based on their acoustical structure and the behavioral context of production. Whether animals perceive these categories and associate distinct meanings to them remains unknown. The zebra finch, a gregarious songbird, uses approximately 11 call-types to communicate hunger, danger, social conflict, and establish social contact and bonding. Using auditory discrimination tasks, we show that the birds discriminate and categorize all the call-types in their vocal repertoire. In addition, systematic errors were more frequent between call-types used in similar behavioral contexts than could be expected from their acoustic similarity. Thus, zebra finches organize their calls into categories and create a mental representation of the meaning of these sounds.

Abstract:The planning and execution of head-beak movements are vital components of bird behavior. They require integration of sensory input and internal processes with goal-directed motor output. Despite its relevance, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying action planning and execution outside of the song system are largely unknown. We recorded single-neuron activity from the associative endbrain area nidopallium caudolaterale (NCL) of two male carrion crows ( Corvus corone ) trained to plan and execute head-beak movements in a spatial delayed response task. The crows were instructed to plan an impending movement toward one of eight possible targets on the left or right side of a touchscreen. In a fraction of trials, the crows were prompted to plan a movement toward a self-chosen target. NCL neurons signaled the impending motion direction in instructed trials. Tuned neuronal activity during motor planning categorically represented the target side, but also specific target locations. As a marker of intentional movement preparation, neuronal activity reliably predicted both target side and specific target location when the crows were free to select a target. In addition, NCL neurons were tuned to specific target locations during movement execution. A subset of neurons was tuned during both planning and execution period; these neurons experienced a sharpening of spatial tuning with the transition from planning to execution. These results show that the avian NCL not only represents high-level sensory and cognitive task components, but also transforms behaviorally-relevant information into dynamic action plans and motor execution during the volitional perception-action cycle of birds. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Corvid songbirds have become exciting new models for understanding complex cognitive behavior. As a key neural underpinning, the endbrain area nidopallium caudolaterale (NCL) represents sensory and memory-related task components. How such representations are converted into goal-directed motor output remained unknown. In crows, we report that NCL neurons are involved in the planning and execution of goal-directed movements. NCL neurons prospectively signaled motion directions in instructed trials, but also when the crows were free to choose a target. NCL neurons showed a target-specific sharpening of tuning with the transition from the planning to the execution period. Thus, the avian NCL not only represents high-level sensory and cognitive task components, but also transforms relevant information into action plans and motor execution.

Abstract:The caudolateral nidopallium (NCL, an analog of the prefrontal cortex) is known to be involved in learning, memory, and discrimination in corvids (a songbird), whereas the involvement of other brain regions in these phenomena is not well explored. We used house crows ( Corvus splendens ) to explore the neural correlates of learning and decision-making by initially training them on a shape discrimination task followed by immunohistochemistry to study the immediate early gene expression (Arc), a dopaminoceptive neuronal marker (DARPP-32, Dopamine- and cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein, Mr 32 kDa) to understand the involvement of the reward pathway and an immature neuronal marker (DCX, doublecortin) to detect learning-induced changes in adult neurogenesis. We performed neuronal counts and neuronal tracing, followed by morphometric analyses. Our present results have demonstrated that besides NCL, other parts of the caudal nidopallium (NC), avian basal ganglia, and intriguingly, vocal control regions in house crows are involved in visual discrimination. We have also found that training on the visual discrimination task can be correlated with neurite pruning in mature dopaminoceptive neurons and immature DCX-positive neurons in the NC of house crows. Furthermore, there is an increase in the incorporation of new neurons throughout NC and the medial striatum which can also be linked to learning. For the first time, our results demonstrate that a combination of structural changes in mature and immature neurons and adult neurogenesis are linked to learning in corvids.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Acoustic communication, such as bird song, is vital in animal ecology, facilitating reproduction, feeding, defense, and more. Variation in bird song may result from adaptation to environmental features such as anthropogenic noise. The vocal repertoire of raptors is essentially unstudied, particularly in urban environments. The aim of this work was to describe and quantify the acoustic repertoire of Chimango Caracaras (Milvago chimango) in rural and urban areas in La Pampa Province, Argentina. I recorded 26 1-min sound samples at each of four breeding colonies (one rural and three urban) during the austral reproductive season of 2021–2022. I recorded 241 vocalizations corresponding to nine clearly distinct call types. Two types of calls made up 50.6% and 19.5% of the vocalizations and seven others made up <10.0% each. Three call types had trills (fast repetitive notes). Average percentage of call types differed significantly between the two habitats (P < 0.01), with more trills produced in rural habitats. Average calling rate was 6.6 ± 5.1 calls/min at rural colonies and 10.7 ± 10.7 at urban colonies. The number of different call types produced was 2.1 ± 1.6 types/min at rural colonies and 2.7 ± 1.8 at urban colonies. The greater calling rate of Chimango Caracaras in urban areas may represent an attempt to improve signal effectiveness among the anthropogenic acoustic clutter.

Artoo-Detoo: What imitating a Star Wars droid reveals on allospecific vocal imitation in parrots and starlings

Abstract:Vocal production learning is a widespread and remarkable phenomenon. However, the underlying mechanisms of allospecific vocal imitation are poorly understood. Parrots and corvids are well known for their imitation abilities, but imitation accuracy has not yet been studied across species in a comparative context. We compared imitation accuracy between nine parrot species and European starlings based on imitation of monophonic and multiphonic sounds, produced by the Star Wars droid R2-D2. Our results show that starlings were better at imitating multiphonic sounds than parrots. However, no difference in imitation accuracy was found between parrots and starlings when imitating monophonic sounds. The differences in imitating accuracy are likely based on a physiological difference in syrinx anatomy, rather than on perceptual or cognitive differences between starlings and parrots. Between our nine tested parrot species, we found that parrots with larger brains (e.g., African greys and amazon parrots) were less accurate at imitating monophonic sounds than smaller brained budgerigars and cockatiels. The use of citizen science in our study shows the great potential this has to expand data collection beyond traditional studies. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the evolution of communication complexity in vocal learners.

Abstract:Counting ability is one of the many aspects of animal cognition and has enjoyed great interest over the last couple of decades. The impetus for studying counting ability in nonhuman animals has likely come from more than a general interest in animal cognition, as the analysis of animal abilities amplifies our understanding of human cognition. In addition, a model animal with the ability to count could be used to replace human subjects in related studies. Here we designed a behavioral paradigm to train rhesus monkeys to count 1-to-6 visual patterns presented sequentially with long and irregular interpattern intervals on a touch screen. The monkeys were required to make a response to the sixth pattern exclusively, inhibiting response to any patterns appearing at other ordinal positions. All stimulus patterns were of the same size, color, location, and shape to prevent monkeys making the right choice due to non-number physical cues. In the long delay period, the monkey had to enumerate how many patterns had been presented sequentially and had to remember in which ordinal position the current pattern was located. Otherwise, it was impossible for them to know which pattern was the target one. The results show that all three monkeys learned to correctly choose the sixth pattern within 3 months. This study provides convincing behavioral evidence that rhesus monkeys may have the capacity to count.
Differential Survival In Carrion Crows Through Eavesdropping on Human Speech: An Agent-Based Model

Abstract:Wild carrion crows eavesdrop on human speech and respond more strongly to it than to the calls of pigeons or parakeets. However, it remains unclear whether this behaviour provides any benefit to them, and if so, under which environmental conditions such a benefit could be expected. I used an agent-based model to examine the effect of eavesdropping on the survival of a carrion crow under different environmental conditions. The crow could gain points from foraging, but also had to avoid encounters with a human in order to not lose points. In addition to eavesdropping, it could visually scan the patch for human presence and, once detected, could keep track of the humans location. I found that eavesdropping led to higher final scores and higher rates of survival than visual scanning alone if the human density on the patch was elevated, or if there were visual obstacles reducing the accuracy of visual scans. Such environmental conditions are particularly common for urban crows foraging in areas such as public parks. The model provides a proof of concept for future empirical research into the potentially differential survival of urban crows eavesdropping on speech.

Abstract:Previous studies often inferred the focus of a bird's attention from its head movements because it provides important clues about their perception and cognition. However, it remains challenging to do so accurately, as the details of how they orient their visual field toward the visual targets remain largely unclear. We thus examined visual field configurations (Study 1) and the visual field use (Study 2) of large-billed crows (Corvus macrorhynchos). Study 1 employed an established ophthalmoscopic reflex technique to identify the visual field configuration, including the binocular width and optic axes, as well as the degree of eye movement. Study 2 used a newly established motion capture system to track the head movements of freely moving crows and examined how they oriented their reconstructed visual fields toward attention-getting objects. When visual targets were moving, the crows frequently used their binocular visual fields, particularly around the projection of the beak-tip. When the visual targets stopped moving, crows frequently used non-binocular visual fields, particularly around the regions where their optic axes were found in Study 1. On such occasions, the crows slightly preferred the right eye. Overall, the visual field use of crows is clearly predictable. Thus, while the untracked eye movements could introduce some level of uncertainty (typically within 15 degrees), we demonstrated the feasibility of inferring a crow's attentional focus by 3D tracking of their heads. Our system represents a promising initial step towards establishing gaze tracking methods for studying corvid behavior and cognition.

Abstract:Signals within animals' vocal communication are considered functional referential and context-specific. Even in the absence of the context, receivers are expected to acquire the information of calls and respond specifically. Whereas the framework was supported by plenty of evidence, its exhaustivity in describing all animal vocal-isations has been questioned. Here, we investigated the vocal repertoire of a cooperatively breeding species, Azure-winged Magpie (Cyanopica cyanus), to present evidence for referential signals. The results showed that Azure-winged Magpies had a relatively large vocal repertoire, consisting of twelve distinct calls. These calls were associated with the context including movement, begging for food, contact, vigilance against predators, etc. However, even the predator-specific alarm calls would induce various responses of receivers. This implies that multiple pieces of information are involved in the vocalisation, which could be utilised by the receiver to select an appropriate response based on the surroundings. Our study gives a detailed description of the context and function of the vocal repertoire in Azure-winged Magpies, laying the foundation for further investigation on the developmental mechanisms of bird vocalisations. This study also suggests that the referential signals of animal vocalisations may not be limited to the context-specific responses of receivers and need to be discussed from a broader perspective.
Exploring Anatomical Links Between the Crow's Nidopallium Caudolaterale and its Song System

Abstract:Crows are corvid songbirds that exhibit remarkable cognitive control over their actions, including their vocalizations. They can learn to vocalize on command and the activity of single neurons from the crow's associative telencephalic structure nidopallium caudolaterale (NCL) is correlated with the execution of this vocal and many non-vocal skilled behaviors. However, it remains unknown if specific anatomical adaptations that directly link the crow NCL to any of the nuclei of the crow's 'song system' exist. To address this issue, we used fluorescent tracers along with histological staining methods (Nissl-, myelin-, and anti tyrosine hydroxylase) to characterize the connectivity of the crow's NCL in relation to its song system nuclei. We found that the NCL sends dense projections into the dorsal intermediate arcopallium (AID) directly adjacent to and engulfing the robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA), which is the telencephalic motor output of the song system. Similarly, we demonstrate dense NCL projections into the striatum surrounding the basal ganglia song nucleus 'area X'. Both of these descending projections mirror the projections of the nidopallial song nucleus HVC (proper name) into RA and area X, with extremely sparse NCL fibers extending into area X. Furthermore, we characterized the distribution of cells projecting from the lateral part of the magnocellular nucleus of the anterior nidopallium (MAN) to NCL. Notably, a separate medial population of MAN cells projects to HVC. These two sets of connections - MAN to NCL and MAN to HVC - run in parallel but do not overlap. Taken together, our findings support the hypothesis that the NCL is part of a 'general motor system' that parallels the song system but exhibits only minimal monosynaptic interconnections with it.

Abstract:A key feature of vocal ontogeny in a variety of taxa with extensive vocal repertoires is a developmental pattern in which vocal exploration is followed by a period of category formation that results in a mature species-specific repertoire. Vocal development preceding the adult repertoire is often called ‘babbling’, a term used to describe aspects of vocal development in species of vocal-learning birds, some marine mammals, some New World monkeys, some bats and humans. The paper summarizes the results of research on babbling in examples from five taxa and proposes a unifying definition facilitating their comparison. There are notable similarities across these species in the developmental pattern of vocalizations, suggesting that vocal production learning might require babbling. However, the current state of the literature is insufficient to confirm this suggestion. We suggest directions for future research to elucidate this issue, emphasizing the importance of (i) expanding the descriptive data and seeking species with complex mature repertoires where babbling may not occur or may occur only to a minimal extent; (ii) (quasi-)experimental research to tease apart possible mechanisms of acquisition and/or self-organizing development; and (iii) computational modelling as a methodology to test hypotheses about the origins and functions of babbling. Abstract:Over the last two decades, an emerging body of research has demonstrated that non-human animals exhibit the ability to combine context-specific calls into larger sequences. These structures have frequently been compared with language’s syntax, whereby linguistic units are combined to form larger structures, and leveraged to argue that syntax might not be unique to language. Currently, however, the overwhelming majority of examples of call combinations are limited to simple sequences comprising just two calls which differ dramatically from the open-ended hierarchical structuring of the syntax found in language. We revisit this issue by taking a whole-repertoire approach to investigate combinatoriality in common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus ). We use Markov chain models to quantify the vocal sequences produced by marmosets providing evidence for structures beyond the bigram, including three-call and even combinations of up to eight or nine calls. Our analyses of these longer vocal sequences are suggestive of potential further internal organization, including some amount of recombination, nestedness and non-adjacent dependencies. We argue that data-driven, whole-repertoire analyses are fundamental to uncovering the combinatorial complexity of non-human animals and will further facilitate meaningful comparisons with language’s combinatoriality.
