Abstract:A PbSe quantum-dot doped fiber amplifier (QDFA) based on the sodium-aluminum-borosilicate-silicate glass in near-infrared (NIR) waveband is realized experimentally for the first time. The quantum-dot doped fiber (QDF) with embedded particle size of 4.08-5.88 nm is prepared by optimizing the melting annealing heat-treatment condition. The prepared QDF has strong and stable photoluminescence (PL) emission in NIR region. The QDFA comprises the QDF, wavelength division multiplexer, isolator, and pump laser. It is observed that the broadband signal in QDFA is amplified in the wavelength-region of 1260-1380 nm depending on the size of QDs. The on-off gain is 16.4 dB at the central wavelength, and the 3-dB bandwidth reaches 80 nm when the inputting signal power is -17 dBm. An excitation threshold and gain saturation are also observed in the experiment. This glass-based QDFA demonstrates a novel approach to extend the current waveband of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, with industrial applications in the future.

Abstract:Using PbSe quantum dots (QDs) as the gain medium doped in UV-gel, we experimentally demonstrate a PbSe QDs doped fiber amplifier (QDFA) with ultra-bandwidth characteristics and low noise level. The QDFA consists of QD doped fiber, wavelength division multiplexer, 980nm pumping LD, and isolator. For the doped fiber in 50µm diameter, the observed pumping threshold is 62mW, 1dB flat bandwidth is 90nm, the maximum signal gain is 12dB, and noise figure is 3.68–3.77dB in the wavelength region of 1250–1370nm. The realized QDFA possesses the wider bandwidth due to the broadband-emission spectrum depending on the size distribution of QDs and lower noise compared with the popular erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). The QDFA presented in this paper provides an alternative solution to the growing demand of the broadband fiber amplifiers in dense wavelength division multiplexing systems.

Abstract:A CW seeded femtosecond optical parametric amplifier, a compromise between OPG/OPA and strongly seeded OPA configurations, has been demonstrated. An independent CW Nd: YAG laser with sub-watt power decreases the pump threshold of the OPA and improves the stability of the output pulses considerably. Output signal energies as high as 30 μJ with pulse durations less than 250 fs near 1 μm are reported. from this two-stage device.

Abstract:A roadmap for future wireless communications is expected to exploit all transmission-suitable spectrum bands, from the microwave to the optical frequencies, to support orders of magnitude faster data transfer with much lower latency than the deployed solutions nowadays. The currently under-exploited mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectrum is an essential building block for such an envisioned all-spectra wireless communication paradigm. Free-space optical (FSO) communications in the mid-IR region have recently attracted great interest due to their intrinsic merits of low propagation lass and high tolerance of atmospheric perturbations. Future development of viable mid-IR FSO transceivers requires a semiconductor source to fulfill the high bandwidth, low energy consumption, and small footprint requirements. In this context, quantum cascade laser (QCL) appears as a promising technological choice. In this work, we present an experimental demonstration of a mid-IR FSO link enabled by a 4.65-mu m directly modulated (DM) QCL operating at room temperature. We achieve a transmission data rate of up to 6 Gbps over a 0.5-m link distance. This achievement is enabled by system-level characterization and optimization of transmitter and receiver power level and frequency response and assisted with advanced modulation and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. This work pushes the QCL-based FSO technology one step closer to practical terrestrial applications, such as the fixed wireless access and the wireless mobile backhaul. Such a QCL-based solution offers a promising way towards the futuristic all-spectra wireless communication paradigm by potentially supporting the whole spectrum from the MIR to the terahertz (THz).

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel hybrid seeded optical parametric amplifier (OPA) that incorporates an external CW seeding at signal wavelength in the first stage and difference-frequency mixing between the idler and pump in the second stage. By using a germanium plate to block the CW seeding background, spectrally and temporally clean signal pulses with duration less than 150 fs and energy up to 17 muJ are obtained with a MgO:LiNbO3-based hybrid seeded OPA. The device may provide direct tunability to some extent and delivers signal pulses tunable from 1.01 mum to 1.08 mum.

Abstract:We demonstrate an effective method to obtain high-repetition-rate femtosecond mid-infrared (mid-IR) pulses by nonlinear optical modulation of mid-IR continuous-wave (CW) quantum and interband cascade lasers (ICLs and QCLs). In the experiment, a high-repetition-rate femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser with nanojoule-level pulse energy was used as the pump source of optical parametric amplifiers to modulate and amplify the mid-IR CW laser. Near transform-limited 84 fs duration (7.3 cycles) mid-IR pulses were generated with above 200 mW average power and a repetition rate of 160 MHz. Moreover, the spectral tunability was demonstrated using CW QCL at different wavelengths. The scheme offered a simple method to produce high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses and that can be flexibly adopted in other mid-IR regions.

Abstract:Diffused quantum wells (DFQW) optical devices have been widely investigated for use in optical electronics integrated circuits. In this paper, we report on the performance of five-period (200 Angstrom In0.53Ga0.47As0.57P0.43 barrier and 60 Angstrom In0.53Ga0.47As well) DFQW optical amplifiers and modulators. The results show that the QW amplifiers and modulators maintain at single guiding mode operation after the QW structure has been annealed. The tuning range of the operational wavelength of QW optical amplifiers is 34meV without a significant degradation in the modal gain peak by interdiffusing the QWs. The QW interdiffusion was accomplished by P+ ion implantation to the upper region of the top cladding layer of the multilayer structure and followed by rapid thermal annealing such that the implanted ions did not damage the QW structures. The I-V characteristics of the implanted QW are similar to that of the unimplanted. Concerning the TE electro-absorptive modulation, a large contrast ratio (CR) of 35dB can be obtained at lambda (op) = 1.55 mum under a small bias of -1.5V for a 500 mum long modulator. For TM mode, a slightly higher CR of 37dB can be obtained at the operation wavelength although the reverse bias voltage is double.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:Parametric lasers with a tuning range of 0.44-2.6 ��J have been obtained with a traveling-wave parametric amplifier employing BBO pumped by the second harmonic of a femtosecond Ti: sapphire laser. The highest output energy is about 40 ��J/pulse. The tuning curve, output energy spectrum and linewidth curve vs wavelength have been measured, which are in good agreement with the calculated results.

Abstract:We study a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pumped optical parametric amplifier (OPA) at 1053 nm. The OPA generates stable signal pulses with duration smaller than 100 fs, wavelength drift smaller than 0.5 nm, and pulse-to-pulse fluctuation of about 4%, by employing an external seeder. In a terawatt laser pumped large-aperture LiNbO3 OPA, pulse energy at signal has been scaled up to 4 mJ. This mJ-class femtosecond OPA at 1053 nm presents a feasible alternative to optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification, and is ready to be applied to petawatt lasers.

Abstract:Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the use of optical fiber for optical parametric chirped pulse amplification to amplify subpicosecond pulses. We use this system to amplify a subpicosecond signal at 1595 nm generated by a fiber-optical parametric oscillator. The 750-fs signal from the oscillator output is stretched to 40 ps, amplified by an all-fiber optical parametric amplifier and then compressed to 808 fs. The peak power of the signal is amplified from 93 mW to 10 W.

Abstract:We report a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) based on a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with optimized dispersion and nonlinear properties pumped by a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Wavelength-tunable parametric gain bands can be obtained by adjusting the pump wavelength from the anomalous to the normal dispersion regime. By utilizing the PCF-based FOPA, weak signals located in the parametric gain bands can be amplified. Wavelength-tunable picosecond pulses can be generated at the signal and idler wavelengths. A 58-dB maximum gain and a wide gain bandwidth from 999 to 1139 nm have been achieved by pumping near the zero-dispersion wavelength. When the FOPA is pumped at 1062.5 nm in the normal dispersion regime of the PCF, the 974-nm weak continuous-wave signal is significantly amplified, and the idler pulse is generated at 1168 nm.

Abstract:Based on super-continuum white light (SWL) injection, a new method of high-energy femtosecond optical parametric amplification (OPA) is put forward which can realize the zero synchronization between 800 nm pump laser and 1053 nm signal laser, and overcome the gain narrowing effect during small signal gain amplification. In the experiment, a broadband 1053 nm laser pulse is obtained with duration of 93 fs and energy higher than 2.6 mJ just with only one stage optical parametric amplification.

Abstract:High-gain optical parametric amplification is an important nonlinear process used both as a source of coherent infrared light and as a source of nonclassical light. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an approach to optical parametric amplification that enables extremely large parametric gains with low energy requirements. In conventional nonlinear media driven by femtosecond pulses, multiple dispersion orders limit the effective interaction length available for parametric amplification. Here, we use the dispersion engineering available in periodically poled thin-film lithium niobate nanowaveguides to eliminate several dispersion orders at once. The result is a quasi-static process; the large peak intensity associated with a short pump pulse can provide gain to signal photons without undergoing pulse distortion or temporal walk-off. We characterize the parametric gain available in these waveguides using optical parametric generation, where vacuum fluctuations are amplified to macroscopic intensities. When driven with pulse energies in excess of 10 pJ, we observe saturated parametric gains as large as 88 dB (146 dB/cm). The devices shown here achieve saturated optical parametric generation with orders of magnitude less pulse energy than previous techniques.

Abstract:All-optical signal processing is envisioned as an approach to dramatically decrease power consumption and speed up performance of next-generation optical telecommunications networks. Nonlinear optical effects, such as four-wave mixing (FWM) and parametric gain, have long been explored to realize all-optical functions in glass fibers. An alternative approach is to employ nanoscale engineering of silicon waveguides to enhance the optical nonlinearities by up to five orders of magnitude, enabling integrated chip-scale all-optical signal processing. Previously, strong two-photon absorption (TPA) of the telecom-band pump has been a fundamental and unavoidable obstacle, limiting parametric gain to values on the order of a few dB. Here we demonstrate a silicon nanophotonic optical parametric amplifier exhibiting gain as large as 25.4 dB, by operating the pump in the mid-IR near one-half the band-gap energy (E~0.55eV, lambda~2200nm), at which parasitic TPA-related absorption vanishes. This gain is high enough to compensate all insertion losses, resulting in 13 dB net off-chip amplification. Furthermore, dispersion engineering dramatically increases the gain bandwidth to more than 220 nm, all realized using an ultra-compact 4 mm silicon chip. Beyond its significant relevance to all-optical signal processing, the broadband parametric gain also facilitates the simultaneous generation of multiple on-chip mid-IR sources through cascaded FWM, covering a 500 nm spectral range. Together, these results provide a foundation for the construction of silicon-based room-temperature mid-IR light sources including tunable chip-scale parametric oscillators, optical frequency combs, and supercontinuum generators.

Abstract:We obtained over 1 W average power at ∼3550 nm wavelength via self-seeded difference-frequency generation (DFG) through a 5 cm long periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate crystal. The pump and signal sources are derived from the identical pre-chirp managed femtosecond Yb-fiber amplifier with sub-100-fs pulse duration and 84 MHz repetition rate for simple synchronization. This result is believed to be among the highest-average-power, femtosecond mid-infrared radiation obtained via DFG.
