Abstract:The concentrations of a selection of major and trace elements were determined in 101 sediment samples collected from a core located in a mid-channel of the Changjiang River (China), about 150 km far away from the river mouth. The whole core refers to a sedimentation period of about 150 years (1850 ~ 2007). The median diameter (D50), as a main grain-size parameter of sediment, total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) were also determined and used as proxies for weathering processes and hydrological events occurred in the catchment basin. A modified Enrichment Factor (mEF) based on groups of elements instead of individual variables was proposed to determine geochemical anomalies in the core sediments. Compositional Data Analysis (CoDA) and multivariate statistics, including Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) and Fuzzy Clustering (FC), were applied to determine the group of elements to be used as a reference and select samples to estimate baseline values. Applying the method to the sediments of the Changjiang River demonstrated how it could be effective in discriminating the occurrence of natural and anthropogenic phenomena in such a big catchment. Results showed, in fact, that flood events that took place in the last 150 years drove the largest geochemical depletion and enrichment processes of the lower Changjiang catchment basin. The pressure exerted by human activities on the catchment following the two main events that favored the recent socio-economic development of China were also highlighted by mEF.
