Abstract:The effects of Zr single atom modification on the hydrogenation mechanism of CO2 to methanol on the Cu(111) surface were investigated by density functional theory (DFT). In the HCOO pathway, 11 elementary steps were involved, which were analyzed from the aspects of kinetics and thermodynamics of each elementary reaction. bi-HCOO*, HCOOH*, H2COO*, H2COOH*, H2CO* and H3CO* are the key intermediates that are most likely to be generated. The elementary reactions of H2COO*, H2CO* and H3CO* hydrogenation have relatively high activation barriers of about 1 eV, and they are the rate-limiting steps in this pathway. The desorption barriers of HCOOH* and H2CO* are much higher than the energy barriers required for continued hydrogenation; therefore, the formation of by-products is inhibited on the Zr-1-Cu single atom catalyst surface. In the COOH pathway, the hydrogenation product trans-COOH* of CO2 can further hydrogenate to t,t-COHOH* through the formation of O-H bonds; then, it facilely dissociates into COH*, and COH* continues to hydrogenate into HCOH*, H2COH* and the final product of CH3OH. The last step is the rate-limiting step, with an activation energy of 1.48 eV. In the RWGS pathway, trans-COOH* transforms to cis-COOH*, and its continued hydrogenation is more favorable than dissociation in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics. The generated HCOOH is incorporated into the HCOO pathway. The results show that the HCOO pathway is more likely to occur and has higher selectivity on Zr-modified Cu-based catalysts.

Abstract:Density functional theory investigations on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol mechanisms over Cu13 cluster loaded catalyst were performed. The results indicate that introducing TiO2 into Al2O3 promoted the residual electrons from Al2O3 surface directionally transmitted to the interface formed by the loaded Cu13 cluster and the support surface, thus created the electron-rich active interface. Incorporating single atom Ga promoter further gathered the residual electrons and stabilized the loaded Cu13 clusters. The electron-rich property of the active interface promoted the chemical adsorption and activation of both CO2 and the generated carbonyl species. Further favors the hydrogenating of carbonyl intermediates to methanol and effectively enhances the methanol selectivity. Moreover, CO2 priors to hydrogenated to methanol via reverse water gas shift pathway over Cu13/Ga-AT computational model with changed reaction rate controlling step with reduced activation energy. This work offers a simple approach for efficient copper-based methanol synthesis catalysts through control of interface electron structure.
Theoretical investigation on the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over single atom Ge promoter doped Cu(111) surface

Abstract:In this work, we proposed a novel strategy, doping single atom Ge promoter to the Cu(111) surface, to overcome the shortcomings such as the difficulties in the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules and the complex by-products produced in both the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) and the formate reaction pathway. The electron modulating effect of single atom Ge species on the reaction mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Ge-Cu(111) surface was detailly investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) method. The results show that the electron supply ability of Cu atoms adjacent to the single Ge atom is greatly enhanced due to the electron modulating effect of Ge species, which leads to the improved interaction between the CO2 molecule and the active interface: the adsorption energy of CO2 over the single atom Ge promoted Cu(111) surface was approximately 1.5 times that over the pure Cu(111) surface and approximately 2.4 times that over clustered Pd modified Cu(111) surface, respectively. The enhanced CO2 adsorption ability further resulted in a decline in the activation energy of the reaction rate control step for the RWGS pathway by about 20 kJ.mol(-1), meanwhile, there emerged three new potential RWGS reaction routes that only produced methanol. Moreover, the formate reaction pathway is kinetically inhibited over the Ge-Cu(111) surface, leading to the reduced by-products such as CO and hydrocarbons to improve both the selectivity of methanol in the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol reaction.

Abstract:The catalytical active phase and reaction mechanism of methanol synthesis by hydrogenation of carbon dioxide on the surface of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst become controversial topics in recent years. In this work, density functional theory calculations are employed to explore the possible mechanisms of the CO2 hydrogenation on three possible active phases, namely Zn/Cu interface, ZnO/Cu interface and hydroxylated Zn/Cu surface (i.e., ZnOH/Cu), which may exist in Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst under realistic conditions. It is more favorable that CO2 activation takes place by the formate pathway rather than the Reverse Water-Gas Shift pathway. Furthermore, the surface hydroxyl group could significantly increase the activity of formate pathway by improving the hydrogenation steps of HCOO to HCOOH and H3CO to H3COH, which are usually deemed as the rate-determining steps. These results suggest that the ZnOH/Cu phase is not only the most stable but also the most active phase for CO2 activation among Zn/Cu, ZnO/Cu and ZnOH/Cu, which could provide more insight into the design of highly efficient catalyst by tuning the surface active phase under operative conditions.

Abstract:The adsorption and hydrogenation of carbon dioxide on γ-Al2O3(110) surface-supported copper clusters of different sizes are investigated using density functional theory calculations. Our results show that the activation of CO2 is most obvious at the Cu/γ-Al2O3 interface containing the size-selected Cu4 cluster. It is interesting that the CO2 activation is more pronounced at the partially hydroxyl-covered interface. The catalytic mechanisms of CO2 conversion to methanol at the dry and hydroxylated Cu4/γ-Al2O3 interfaces via the formate route and the pathway initiated through the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide produced by the reverse water–gas shift reaction are further explored. On both interfaces, the formate pathway is identified as the preferred reaction pathway, in which the hydrogenation of HCOO to H2COO is the rate-limiting step (RLS). However, since the surface OH group can act as a hydrogen source in some elementary reactions, unlike the dry surface, the production of H2COOH species along the formate pathway is found at the hydroxylated interface. In addition, the introduction of OH at the interface leads to an increase in the kinetic barrier of the RLS, indicating that surface hydroxylation has a negative effect on the catalytic activity of CO2 conversion to CH3OH at the Cu/γ-Al2O3 interface.

Abstract:Copper-based catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol have attracted much interest. The complex nature of these catalysts, however, renders the elucidation of their structure–activity properties difficult. Here we report a copper-based catalyst with isolated active copper sites for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. It is revealed that the single-atom Cu–Zr catalyst with Cu1–O3 units contributes solely to methanol synthesis around 180 °C, while the presence of small copper clusters or nanoparticles with Cu–Cu structural patterns are responsible for forming the CO by-product. Furthermore, the gradual migration of Cu1–O3 units with a quasiplanar structure to the catalyst surface is observed during the catalytic process and accelerates CO2 hydrogenation. The highly active, isolated copper sites and the distinguishable structural pattern identified here extend the horizon of single-atom catalysts for applications in thermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation and could guide the further design of high-performance copper-based catalysts to meet industrial demand. Copper-based catalysts are traditionally very effective for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol, although control over the active site has remained elusive. Here, the authors design a Cu1/ZrO2 single-atom catalyst featuring a Cu1–O3 site responsible for a remarkable performance at 180 °C.

Abstract:Abstract Cu-based catalysts have attracted much interest in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol because of their high activity. However, the effect of interface, coordination structure, particle size and other underlying factors existed in heterogeneous catalysts render to complex active sites on its surface, therefore it is difficult to study the real active sites for methanol synthesis. Here, we report a novel Cu-based catalyst with isolated Cu active sites (Cu1-O3 units) for highly selective hydrogenating CO2 to methanol at low temperature (100% selectivity for methanol at 180 oC). Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the single-atom Cu-Zr catalyst with Cu1-O3 units is only contributed to synthesize methanol at 180 oC, but the Cu clusters or nanoparticles with Cu-Cu or Cu-O-Cu active sites will promote the process of reverse water gas shift (RWGS) side reaction to form undesirable byproducts CO. Furthermore, the Cu1-O3 units with tetrahedral structure could gradually migrate to the catalyst surface for accelerating CO2 hydrogenation reaction during catalytic process. The high activity isolated Cu-based catalyst with legible structure will be helpful to understand the real active sites of Cu-based catalysts for methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation, thereby guiding further design the Cu catalyst with high performance to meet the industrial demand, at the same time as extending the horizontal of single atom catalyst for application in the thermal catalytic process of CO2 hydrogenation.
Mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation over Cu/ZrO2(2̄ 12) interface from first-principles kinetics Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract:It has been a goal consistently pursued by chemists to understand and control the catalytic process over composite materials. In order to provide deeper insight on complex interfacial catalysis at the experimental conditions, we performed an extensive analysis on CO2 hydrogenation over a Cu/ZrO2 model catalyst by employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations based on the continuous stirred tank model. The free energy profiles are determined for the reaction at the oxygen-rich Cu/m-ZrO2 (2̅12) interface, where all interfacial Zr are six-coordinated since the interface accumulates oxidative species at the reaction conditions. We show that not only methanol but also CO are produced through the formate pathway dominantly, whilst the reverse-water-gas-shift (RWGS) channel has only a minor contribution. H2CO is a key intermediate species in the reaction pathway, the hydrogenation of which dictates the high temperature of CO2 hydrogenation. The kinetics simulation shows that the CO2 conversion is 1.20%, the selectivity towards methanol is 68% at 500K and the activation energies for methanol and CO formation are 0.79 and 1.79eV, respectively. The secondary reactions due to the product readsorption lower the overall turnover frequency (TOF) but increase the selectivity towards methanol by 16%. We also show that kMC is a more reliable tool for simulating heterogeneous catalytic processes compared to the microkinetics approach.

Mechanistic Study of Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation on Rh-doped Cu(111) Surfaces

Abstract:Self-consistent periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to explore the adsorption and reaction mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol via the reverse water-gas-shift pathway on Cu(111) and three RhCu(111) surfaces with different doped-Rh atoms on Cu(111) surfaces, denoted as Rh3Cu6 (111), Rh6Cu3 (111) and Rh ML surfaces. All the possible favored adsorption sites, structures and adsorption energies of the relative species on Cu(111) and RhCu(111) were determined. H2CO*, HCO*,CO*, cis-COOH* and transCOOS* adsorbing at Rh atoms through C atom are strengthened by the doped Rh, and the adsorption energies of species on Cu sites through O atom are not altered obviously, which can be explained by d-PDOS analysis. Through the analyses of Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi (BEP) relationships, it is found that the adsorption of bransCOOH* and co-adsorbed CO*/H* is stronger on RhCu(111) surfaces, while the energy of CO* in the TS geometry is dramatically decreased by doping with Rh atoms, leading to the alternation of rate-limiting step from CO2 hydrogenation forming trans-COON* on Cu(111) and Rh3Cu6 (111) surfaces to CO hydrogenation forming HCO* on Rh3Cu6 (111) and Rh ML (monolayer) surfaces. The order of the highest activation barriers for the overall reaction is Cu(111) > Rh6Cu3 (111) > Rh ML > Rh3Cu6 (111). Moreover, due to the dissociative adsorption of H-2, the yield of CO byproduct is suppressed. The calculated results show that the overall reaction process of CH3OH synthesis is facilitated kinetically and thermodynamically, especially on Rh3Cu6 (111) surface. The present insights are helpful for the rational design and optimization of Rh-Cu bimetallic catalysts used in the process of CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH synthesis.

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated aspects of the CO2 hydrogenation mechanism, correlating structure-activity relationships of Cu-ZnO-ZrO2 catalysts prepared by one-pot surfactant-assisted co-precipitation with different surfactant ratios. Identifying the CO2 hydrogenation pathway intermediates is key to controlling the reaction selectivity. Experimental evidence shows that the CO2 is dissociating into CO* and O* onto the surface of the Cu-ZnO-ZrO2 catalyst. The adsorption and dissociation of CO2 were evidenced by a combination of in situ ambient-pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) with a transmission cell. AP-XPS showed that the catalysts are composed of a Cu2+, Zr3+, and Zr4+ mixture and two kinds of Zn2+ species. After the H2 reduction process, only Cu2+ was reduced to Cu0. The Zn and Zr species were oxidized by the dissociated O* species. In situ transmission FTIR showed that CO was adsorbed onto the Cu+/0 sites. The catalyst with the higher surfactant molar ratio exhibited the highest CO2 conversion close to the equilibrium conversion, as well as a good methanol formation rate.

Abstract:The metal-oxide interaction is of significance to the construction of active sites for Cu-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This study examines the effect of ZnO and ZrO2 composition on the Cu/ZnO/ZrO2 catalyst structure and surface properties to further tune the catalytic activity for methanol synthesis. The ZnO/ZrO2 ratio can impact the CuZn alloy formation from strong Cu-ZnO interactions and the surface basic sites for CO2 adsorption at the Cu-ZrO2 interface. The proportional correlation of the CuZn alloy content and CO2 desorption amount with the space-time yield (STY) of methanol reveals a synergistic interaction between Cu and oxides (ZnO and ZrO2) that enhances methanol synthesis. The optimized Cu/ZnO/ZrO2 catalyst exhibits higher STY relative to the traditional Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst. The obtained results presented herein can provide insight into the catalyst design for methanol synthesis from CO2.

Abstract:The development of a highly efficient catalyst for CO2 activation and selective conversion to methanol is critical to address the issues associated with the high thermal stability of CO2 and controllable synthesis of methanol. Cu-based catalysts have been widely studied because of the low cost and excellent performance in mild conditions. However, the improvement of catalytic activity and selectivity remains challenging. Herein, we prepared hollow Cu@ZrO2 catalysts through pyrolysis of Cu-loaded Zr-MOF for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Low-temperature pyrolysis generated highly dispersed Cu nanoparticles with balanced Cu0/Cu+ sites, larger amounts of surface basic sites and abundant Cu-ZrO2 interface in the hollow structure, contributing to enhanced catalytic capacity for adsorption/activation of CO2 and selective hydrogenation to methanol. In situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy revealed the methanol formation followed the formate-intermediated pathway. This work would provide a guideline for the design of high-performance catalysts and the understanding of the mechanism and active sites for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Abstract:The usage of CO2, a vital carbon source, is of great application value in carbon neutrality. Hydrogenation is one of the most promising approaches to convert the CO2 into high-value chemicals like methanol. The development of the hydrogenation of CO2 mainly lies in the design of safe and efficient catalysts. Focusing on the mechanism and the interface effects, the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol over Cu/ZnO-based catalyst was investigated in this work. To study the enhancing effect of metal promoters, atomic doping was simulated on Cu/ZnO-X(Al,Mg,Ga,Pt,Pd,Au) catalyst. Based on the designed atomic doped mode, density functional theory (DFT) calculation was conducted to analyze the adsorption of intermediates, thermodynamic reaction path, and kinetics of CO2 methanolization. The results show that Cu-ZnO heterostructure improves the HCOO path of CO2 hydrogenation by metal-support interaction (MSI). A linear relationship between the adsorption energy of the intermediates via hydrogenation process was found with the correlation coefficient R 2 ≈ 0.8 . The order of the highest activation barriers for the overall reaction is Cu/ZnO-Au > Cu/ZnO-Mg > Cu/ZnO-Pd > Cu/ZnO-Pt > Cu/ZnO-Ga > Cu/ZnO > Cu/ZnO-Al. The diverse performance of various metal promoters was ranked as Al > Ga > Mg, Pt > Pd > Au. Our simulation work well corresponds the previous experimental results conducted by other scholars and will provide guidance for future design of the high-efficient catalysis for CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Cd-doped ZrO2 catalyst has been found to have high selectivity and activity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. In this work, density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the microscopic mechanism of the reaction. The results show that Cd doping effectively promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, which significantly activate the CO2 with stable adsorption configurations. Compared with CO2, gaseous H2 adsorption is more difficult, and it is mainly dissociated and adsorbed on the surface as [HCd–HO]* or [HZr–HO]* compact ion pairs, with [HCd–HO]* having the lower energy barrier. The reaction pathways of CO2 to methanol has been investigated, revealing the formate path as the dominated pathway via HCOO* to H2COO* and to H3CO*. The hydrogen anions, HCd* and HZr*, significantly reduce the energy barriers of the reaction.

Abstract:The efficient fixation/utilization of CO2 has been pursued by chemists for decades. In this work, the catalytic kinetics of CO2 fixation to methanol over a binary catalyst Cu/ZrO2 is investigated by first principles kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. A Cu/ZrO2 interface model is first established and the reaction network of CO2 hydrogenation is explored. In the Cu/ZrO2 system two reaction channels to methanol are identified (i) a reverse water–gas shift reaction via CO2 decomposition to CO and (ii) the well-regarded mechanism via a formate intermediate. The theoretical selectivity is determined to be 85% for methanol and 15% for CO. The removal of the oxidative species is kinetically slow. As a result, 87% of the interface sites are covered by these oxidative species, which oxidize the interface Cu. We show that the binding strength of O atom at the interface is a critical parameter determining the activity and selectivity of the catalyst.
Modulation of Al2O3 and ZrO2 composite in Cu/ZnO-based catalysts with enhanced performance for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts have been widely applied as industrial catalysts for methanol synthesis from syngas, but suffers low activity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This study establishes highly active Cu catalysts through modulation of the composite of Al2O3 and ZrO2 in Cu/ZnO-based catalysts. The composition of Al2O3 and ZrO2 impacts the Cu dispersion, exposed surface area of Cu, the Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) ratio and surface basicity. An appropriate content of Al2O3 and ZrO2 presents the higher Cu surface area, desirable ratio of Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) and moderate-strong basic sites for effective CO2 adsorption/activation, giving rise to higher space-time yield of methanol (up to 648 gCH3OH·kgcat −1·h−1) than the commercial Cu catalyst. STY of methanol can be correlated with Cu surface area and Cu0/(Cu0+Cu+) ratio under the investigated conditions. The mechanistic analysis demonstrates that surface formate and methoxy species are the major intermediates. The methanol formation principally follows the formate-methoxy intermediate pathway.

Abstract:Comprehensive fundamental understanding of CO hydrogenation reactions over Cu and ZnCu alloy surfaces is of great importance.Herein,we report a comparative DFT calculation study of elementary surface reaction network of CO hydrogenation reactions on stepped Cu（211）,Cu（611）,ZnCu（211） and ZnCu（611）surfaces.On Zn Cu（211） and Zn Cu（611） surfaces,the energetic favorable reaction path of CO hydrogenation reaction follows CO * →HCO * →H 2 CO * →H 3 CO * →CH 3 OH * →CH 3 OH with H 3 CO * hydrogenation as the rate-limiting step and proceeds more facilely on ZnCu（611） surface than on ZnCu（211） surface.On Cu（211） and Cu（611） surfaces,the energetic favorable reaction path of CO hydrogenation reaction follows CO * →HCO * →HCOH * →H 2 COH * →H 3 COH * →CH 3 * →CH 4 * →CH 4 with H 2 COH * hydrogenation as the rate-limiting step and proceeds more facilely on Cu（611） than on Cu（211）.The key difference of CO hydrogenation reaction on Zn Cu alloy surface and Cu is that the resulting CH 3 OH * species desorbs to produce CH 3 OH on ZnCu alloy but undergoes H * -assisted decomposition to CH 3 * and eventually to CH 4 on Cu surface.These results successfully unveil elementary surface reaction networks and structure sensitivity of Cu and Zn Cu alloy-catalyzed CO hydrogenation reactions.

Abstract:First-principle based microkinetic simulations are performed to investigate methanol synthesis from CO and CO2 on Cu(221) and CuZn(221) surfaces. It is found that regardless of surface structure, the carbon consumption rate follows the order: CO hydrogenation > CO/CO2 hydrogenation > CO2 hydrogenation. The superior CO hydrogenation activity mainly arises from the lower barriers of elementary reactions than CO2 hydrogenation. Compared to Cu(221), the introduction of Zn greatly lowers the activity of methanol synthesis, in particularly for CO hydrogenation. For a mixed CO/CO2 hydrogenation, CO acts as the carbon source on Cu(221) while both CO and CO2 contribute to carbon conversion on CuZn(221). The degree of rate control studies show that the key steps that determine the reaction activity of CO/CO2 hydrogenation are HCO and HCOO hydrogenation on Cu(221), instead of HCOOH hydrogenation on CuZn(221). The present work highlights the effect of the Zn doping and feed gas composition on methanol synthesis.

Abstract:With the change of the global climate, the technology of hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol has attracted considerable attention all over the world. In this work, the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol over Cu/ZnO/ZrO 2 catalysts is carried out at atmospheric pressure. The effect of process conditions on the catalytic performance is examined to determine the most effective conditions. The reaction kinetics are then investigated by using two Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) kinetic models. The kinetic parameters are determined and statistical tests and residual analyses indicate that both kinetic models are reliable. However, the fitting effects for CO 2 and CO are different between the two models. Moreover, the structural characteristics of the catalytic under different conditions are examined by TEM, XRD, and XPS. It can also be found that oxygen vacancies can facilitate the activation of carbon dioxide and the desorption of methanol during the reaction. The reactants and products undergo reactions in which oxygen migrates and reoxidation occurs with surface oxygen vacancies, resulting in an increase in the concentration of oxygen vacancies.
