Abstract:A series of air-stable zinc complexes (1–3) supported by (benzimidazolyl)pyridine alcohol ligands {tridentate [N,N,O]} has been synthesized and well characterized by FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR, elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In combination with methyllithium, these zinc complexes were proved to be highly efficient initiators for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL). The ROP of ε-CL in the absence or presence of benzyl alcohol, as well as the influences of monomer concentration, reaction temperature and the substituent on the ligand, were investigated in detail.

Abstract:Quaternary ammonium and phosphonium borane bifunctional catalysts have shown high catalytic performance in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides to produce polyether. Herein, we systematically investigate a series of well-defined organoboron catalysts by varying the electronic and steric properties of the Lewis acidic boron (B) centers, manipulating the steric hindrance on the ammonium cation (N+), adjusting the distance between B and N+, and regulating the nucleic B number of the catalysts. The investigation on the dinuclear catalysts indicated that the reactivity of a given catalyst could be speculated by its B- N-B angle and the B center dot center dot center dot B distance. We found that the increase of Lewis acidity and the number of B centers of the organoboron catalysts are useful for a high catalytic activity for ROP of epoxides. The Lewis acidity of the B centers was determined using the acceptor numbers, showing an order of borinane (23.4) > BBN (21.7) > BCy2 (18.8) > Bpin (15.5). Moreover, we demonstrated the production of various telechelic polyols in the presence of different chain transfer agents using the organoboron catalysts. The produced telechelic samples have a well-defined terminal functionality with controllable molecular weight. Lastly, these organoboron catalysts were utilized to produce block copolymers, allyl-terminated macromonomers, and random copolymers.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Four novel bridged-amidines H(2)L {1,4-R(1)[C(=NR(2))(NHR(2))}(2) [R(1) =C(6)H(4), R(2)=2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (H(2)L(1)); =C(6)H(4), R(2)=2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (H(2)L(2)); R(I) =C(6)H(10), R(2)=2,6-(i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3) (H(2)L(3)); R(i) =C(6)H(10), R(2)= 2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3) (H(2)L(4))]} were synthesized in 65%-78% isolated yields by the condensation reaction of dicarboxylic acid with four equimolar amounts of amines in the presence of PPSE at 180 degrees C. Alkane elimination reaction of Ln(CH(2)SiMe(3))(3)(THF)(2) (Ln=Y. Lu) with 0.5 equiv. of amidine in THF at room temperature afforded the corresponding bimetallic rare earth alkyl complexes (THF)(Me(3)SiCH(2))(2)LnL(1)Ln(CH(2)SiMe(3))(2)(THF) [Lit = Y (1), Lu (2)1, (THF)(Me(3)SiCH(2)),LnL(2)Ln(CH(2)SiMe(3))(2)(THF) [Ln=Y (3), Lu (4)], (THF)(Me(3)SiCH(2))(2)YL(3)Y(CH(2)S(1)Me(3))(2)(THF) (5), (THF)(Me(3)SiCH(2))(2)YL(4)-Y(CH(2)SiMe(3))(2)(THF) (6) in 72%-80% isolated yields. These neutral complexes showed activity towards L-lactide polymerization in toluene at 70 degrees C to give high molecular weight (M>10(4)) and narrow molecular weight distribution 1.40) polymers.

Abstract:The construction of complex polymer architectures with well-defined topology, composition and functionality has been extensively explored as the molecular basis for the development of modern polymer materials. The unique reaction kinetics of free-radical polymerization leads to the concurrent formation of crosslinks between polymer chains and rings within an individual chain and, thus, free-radical (co)polymerization of multivinyl monomers provides a facile method to manipulate chain topology and functionality. Regulating the relative contribution of these intermolecular and intramolecular chain-propagation reactions is the key to the construction of architecturally complex polymers. This can be achieved through the design of new monomers or by spatially or kinetically controlling crosslinking reactions. These mechanisms enable the synthesis of various polymer architectures, including linear, cyclized, branched and star polymer chains, as well as crosslinked networks. In this Review, we highlight some of the contemporary experimental strategies to prepare complex polymer architectures using radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers. We also examine the recent development of characterization techniques for sub-chain connections in such complex macromolecules. Finally, we discuss how these crosslinking reactions have been engineered to generate advanced polymer materials for use in a variety of biomedical applications.

Abstract:Although visible-light photoredox catalysis has implemented diverse reaction mechanisms for the synthesis of well-defined polymers with precision spatiotemporal control, the tolerance of redox-sensitive monomers remains a formidable challenge. In an alternative way, the photoiniferter polymerization technique offers an opportunity to address this unmet need. Herein, we report an efficient iodine-transfer radical ring-opening polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs), affording unsaturated linear polymers with predictable molecular weight and low dispersity. Commercially available alkyl iodide and light strips are used to initiate and control the polymer chain growth. Notably, this light-driven system tolerates active pentafluorophenyl ester group, whereby nearly quantitative post-modifications proceed and have rendered one-for-all preparation of polymers including crystalline semi-fluorinated P(VCPs) with enhanced material properties.

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.
Non-linear Radical Additions-Coupling Polymerization of Monovinyl Monomers Towards Polymer Networks:Theory,Tunability and Heritable Architecture

Abstract:Exploring new polymerization strategy for current available monomers is a big challenge in polymer science.Here we re-investigate radical polymerization of monovinyl monomer(MVM)initiated by uniform branched polyfunctional initiator(PFI),which is termed non-linear radical additions-coupling polymerization(NLRAsCP).In NLRAsCP,both addition and coupling reactions of radical contribute to the construction of the polymer chains,which leads to continuous growth of branch topology.Theoretical analysis of NLRAsCP predicts that the gelation is determined by the functionality of PFI(a),the extent of initiation of the PFI(q)and the termination factor of radical(φ).NLRAsCPs of styrene and methyl methacrylate promoted by Cu(0)/Me6TREN or Mn2(CO)10/visible light were conducted.After the cleavage of incorporated PFI fragment or junctions in the network,the network was transformed to linear chains having almost the same structure as segmental chains in the precursor network.This allows the reverse deducing the network structure from its cleaved products.It has been proven that NLRAsCP includes stepwise initiation of PFI,chain-growth of segmental chains and successive endlinking of macroradicals derived from PFI.The three parameters related to the gelation process,a,q and φ,were adjusted via binary PFI,the feed ratio of[Mn2(CO)10]/[PFI]and addition of non-homopolymerizable comonomer respectively.The minimum values of a and q,and the minimum amount of comonomer required for gelation were determined,which can be applied to estimate φ of various macroradicals.NLRAsCP opens a general and facile strategy for synthesis of a variety of polymer networks with heritable architecture by one-pot polymerization of various MVMs.

Abstract:Radical polymerization (RP) of multivinyl monomers (MVMs) provides a facile solution for manipulating polymer topology and has received increasing attention due to their industrial and academic significance. Continuous efforts have been made to understand their mechanism, which is the key to regulating materials structure. Modelling techniques have become a powerful tool that can provide detailed information on polymerization kinetics which is inaccessible by experiments. Many publications have reported the combination of experiments and modelling for free radical polymerization (FRP) and reversible-deactivation radical polymerizations (RDRP) of MVMs. Herein, a minireview is presented for the most important modelling techniques and their applications in FRP/RDRP of MVMs. This review hopes to illustrate that the combination of modelling and wet experiments can be a great asset to polymer researchers and inspire new thinking for the future MVMs experiment optimization and product design.

Abstract:Vinyl sulfonium salts typically act as an electrophilic Michael acceptor, thus initiating many tandem cyclization reactions. Herein, we disclosed the novel reactivity of vinyl sulfonium salts as a radical acceptor. Using redoxactive ester as an alkyl radical precursor, metal-free decarboxylative alkenylation with vinyl sulfonium salts was realized using eosin Y as a photocatalyst. This process features a broad substrate scope and tolerates with a broad range of primary, secondary, tertiary carboxylic acids.

Abstract:Introducing polar groups into non-polar polyolefins can significantly enhance the important properties of materials. However, producing polyolefin backbones consisting of polar blocks remains elusive, due to the substantial difference of reactivity ratios between polar and non-polar olefin monomers in radical polymerization or the poisoning of transition-metal catalysts by polar groups in coordination polymerization. Herein we present a practical way for the preparation of polyethylene-based polymers with distinct polar groups by radical polymerization of α-olefins. A strategy of switchable remote hydrogen atom or group transfer is devised, leading to a diverse range of AAB or ABC sequence-defined carbon-chain polyolefins. The utility of these polymers is demonstrated by using poly(ethyl 2-cyanohept-6-enoate) (P2) as an interphase layer material in anode-free Li metal battery, which effectively improves the cycling stability of the battery and indicates its potential in energy storage applications.

Long Range Chirality Transfer In Free Radical Polymerization Of Vinylterphenyl Monomers Bearing Chiral Alkoxy Groups

Abstract:Two series of chiral bulky vinyl aromatics, 2-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)-5-(4'-hexyloxyphenyl)styrene (S-Am (m = 0, 1, 2, 3)/R-A0) and 2-(4'-hexyloxyphenyl)-5-(4'-alkoxyphenyl)styrene (S-Bm (m = 0, 1, 2, 3)/R-B0), were synthesized and radically polymerized (where m denotes the carbon number between stereogenic center and ether oxygen atom). The generation and stereomutation of helical structures as well as chirality transfer from the stereogenic center of the side-group to the polymer backbone during polymerization were investigated by a combination of H-1- and C-13-NMR, polarimetry, circular dichroism spectroscopy, liquid crystal induced circular dichroism, and computer simulation. All the polymers, except S-B3, display optical rotations and Cotton effects in the UV-Vis absorption region of terphenyl pendant, which are quite different from the corresponding model compounds and monomers, suggesting the formation of chiral secondary structures, that is, skewed packing of side-groups and twisting of polymer backbones with a dominant screw sense. The sign of optical rotation changes alternatively and the strength diminishes when m increases from 1 to 3. However, although the stereogenic centers in S-A0 and S-B0 are closer to the vinyl group than those in S-A1 and S-B1, separately, a weaker chiral induction power is observed. Moreover, optical rotations of polymers derived from S-A0/R-A0 and S-B0/R-B0 are opposite in sign and increase with annealing time in tetrahydrofuran. These results are in a sharp contrast with our previous findings in similar vinylterphenyl compounds, where -COO- rather than -O- links the chiral alkyl tail to the terphenyl group, manifesting a remarkable effect of small structural variation of side-group on polymer chiroptical properties and complexity of chirality transfer in helix-sense-selective polymerization. Abstract:Iodine‐transfer radical ring‐opening polymerization of a N‐(malonyloxy)phthalimide‐functionalized vinylcyclopropane affords redox‐sensitive polymers, whose material properties can be tuned by copolymerization and/or photochemical decarboxylative post‐modification. Comprehensive Summary Post‐polymerization modification provides an important approach to tuning the material properties of obtained polymers. In this work, we demonstrated a rational design of novel vinylcyclopropane monomer bearing a pendant N‐hydroxylphthalimide redox ester, and explored its radical ring‐opening polymerization behavior under visible‐light conditions. Photochemical decarboxylation of resulted polymer provided unique access to poly(vinylcyclopropane) bearing single ester group in each repeating unit. This decarboxylative modification has greatly reshaped the thermal and mechanical properties, converting a glassy polymer into a soft, ductile, and rubber‐like material.

Abstract:Compared with homopolymers, the copolymers exhibit improved properties, providing a broad application prospect. Herein, we report the visible-light-induced living/controlled radical copolymerization of acrylates or acrylamides and 1-octene mediated by organocobalt complexes at ambient temperature, giving copolymers with well-predictable molecular weights from 4400 to 27200 and low polydispersities in the range 1.17-1.28. The acrylic monomer reactivity ratio was calculated by monomer conversion and molar fraction of 1-octene without a complex fitting process. The electron withdrawing groups on acrylic monomers resulted in low reactivity ratio down to 1.1 along with high molar fraction of 1-octene up to 34%, while electron-donating group led to increased reactivity ratio as 43 with a declined molar fraction of 1-octene as 3%. For the first time, a linear relationship between the logarithm of the reactivity ratio and the atomic charge of the propagating radical was observed, which affords a potential quantitative model to evaluate the electronic effect in other copolymerization systems.

Abstract:Radical copolymerization of a chiral monomer, (+)-2,5-bis[4'-((S)-2-methylbutoxy)phenyl]styrene and an achiral monomer, 2,5-bis(4'-hexyloxyphenyl)styrene, is carried out in anisole at 90 degrees C with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The resultant optically active helical copolymers show an unusual linear relationship between optical activity and composition, in sharp contrast with Green's "sergeants-and-soldiers" and "majority" rules. Analysis of the polarimetry, circular dichroism, and chain extension results suggest that the weak steric interaction between the propagation helical radical and the incoming monomer drove the copolymer chain to grow in a specific direction. Moreover, the helical macroinitiator is successfully used to induce the helix-sense-selective atom transfer radical polymerization of an achiral analogous monomer to yield optically-active block copolymers, which indicate a convenient way to prepare helical polymers with an excess screw sense from an achiral monomer by means of radical polymerization.
