Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Abstract We experimentally investigated the soliton collisions between soliton molecules and deuterogenic solitons spontaneously generated on the continuous wave (cw) noise background in an ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode locked with MoS2 saturable absorber (SA). The dynamics of the soliton collisions were observed using the time-stretch dispersion Fourier transform technique. The noise-induced deuterogenic solitons first undergo spectral broadening and wavelength shifting, then collide successively with a soliton molecule and eventually vanish. Within the simple collision framework, the spectral-temporal dynamics of soliton collision would help to unveil the self-stabilization mechanism of the soliton molecules in consideration of dispersive wave shedding. This nonlinear dynamics is similar to the soliton rain, except that complex condensed soliton phase is substituted with a soliton molecule.

Abstract:Optical solitons in ultrafast fiber lasers, as a result of dual balances between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as gain and loss, enable various soliton interactions. Soliton collisions are among the most intriguing soliton interactions, which fuel the understanding for particle-like properties of solitons. Here, we experimentally investigate the transient dynamics of collisions between a two-soliton molecule and a soliton singlet in a mode-locked fiber laser. By means of the dispersive Fourier transform technique, the evolving spectral interferograms of different collision scenarios are measured in real time. In particular, the "quasi-elastic" collision is observed, which shows that the soliton-molecule state remains unaltered after the collision and the group-velocity difference between the soliton molecule and the singlet is changed. It is directly demonstrated that a bond exchange occurs between the colliding solitons. By tuning the intra-cavity polarization controller, the dynamic processes of other collision outcomes, including the annihilation of a soliton in the soliton molecule as well as the formation of a stable unequally spaced soliton triplet, are also revealed. Our work facilitates a deeper understanding of soliton collision dynamics in ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:The buildup dynamics from noise-seeded relaxation oscillation to harmonic mode-locking (HML) solitons generation have been well investigated in ultrafast fiber lasers. However, the transient multi-soliton dynamics in higher-order HML states are still attractive yet largely unexplored. We reveal here that, the experimental observation of the multi-soliton dynamics including soliton beating dynamics, soliton annihilation, transient bound state, two-soliton resonance state, soliton splitting, and multi-soliton repulsion dynamics are analyzed by the emerging time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique. Particularly, the excessive intracavity energy result in the double-pulse pulsating with transient bound states and three types of soliton molecules states can be observed in the earlier and middle part of the transition process. Numerical results further reveal that several similar multi-soliton dynamics operating at stable 2nd and 3rd states could be caused by a fine tuning of the pump power level in a hybrid mode-locked laser. Our results unveil a diverse set of ultrafast transient process in fiber lasers, and open up new ways into obtaining and controlling the generation of high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses in fiber lasers.

Abstract:Self-assembly of optical solitons propagating in nonlinear dissipative systems spreads the concept of soliton molecules. Assisted with the real-time spectral interferometry, plentiful internal dynamics has been probed within the multi-pulse patterns, emphasizing the striking analogies with the matter molecules. Therefrom, these particle-like behaviors would yield more intriguing landscapes towards the extended degrees of freedom considering increased constituents. Here, we transfer the concept of 'isomer' to the experimental investigation on the unexplored isomeric dynamics of soliton molecules in parallel. Particularly, two isomers for soliton triplets and four isomers for soliton quadruplets are captured under different self-assembled forms, within each of which the binding separations and relative phases of the constituents are governed by mutual soliton interactions. With the diverse separation-phase evolving trajectories mapped in the interaction plane, the detailed insights of the temporal distribution and the transient dynamics are displayed with respect to a panorama of the isomeric dynamics. The perspective of optical isomers shed new light on the analogy with matter molecules, and the underlying isomeric dynamics may stimulate the artificial manipulation of various soliton molecules for ultrafast applications.

Abstract:Using the one-dimensional particle- in- cell simulation, we studied the splitting of ultrashort laser pulses propagating in plasmas and the generation of soliton-like structures, and compared the effect on these phenomenon by changing the duration and intensity of initial laser pulse. It was shown the solitons moving with high group velocities can be formed by the ultrashort laser pulse with in a few cycles of duration. When the pulse duration and intensity of initial laser pulses increase, the group velocities of solitons decrease with greater frequency down-shifts. The decay of high-order solitons are generated by self-steepening and self-frequency shift, so the initial laser pulse splits into several daughter-pulses, and two solitons with different group velocities can be formed and propagate in the plasma. The number of daughter-pulses observed in simulations has been predicted by the theoretical calculation of soliton-orders.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated the soliton interaction in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser and revealed the existence of three types of strong soliton interaction: a global type of soliton interaction caused by the existence of unstable CW components; a local type of soliton interaction mediated through the radiative dispersive waves; and the direct soliton interaction. We found that the appearance of the various soliton operation modes observed in the passively mode locked fiber soliton lasers are the direct consequences of these three types of soliton interaction. The soliton interaction in the laser is further numerically simulated based on a pulse tracing technique. The numerical simulations confirmed the existence of the dispersive wave mediated soliton interaction and the direct soliton interaction. Furthermore, it was shown that the resonant dispersive waves mediated soliton interaction in the laser always has the consequence of causing random irregular relative soliton movement, and the experimentally observed states of bound solitons are caused by the direct soliton interaction. In particular, as the solitons generated in the laser could have a profile with long tails, the direct soliton interaction could extend to a soliton separation that is larger than 5 times of the soliton pulse width.

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers, which have been widely utilized to generate ultrashort pulses in the femtosecond level, can be regarded as the next-generation laser source due to the advantages of high beam quality, high efficiency, etc. On the other hand, ultrafast mode-locking fiber lasers can provide an excellent platform for observing a variety of nonlinear dynamics. Although some steady state phenomena had been observed theoretically and experimentally, many interesting and important transient dynamics properties can only be theoretically predicted, and some are unpredictable. The main reason is that these ultrafast nonlinear dynamics are unrepeatable and have complex transformation in temporal and spectral domain, which cannot be resolved by the current technologies. In recent years, researchers have proposed time-stretched dispersive Fourier transform (TS-DFT) technique [1]-[6] to measure the transient, nonrepeat events. This technique can map the spectral information of optical waves into the time domain, thus provide an elegant way to obtain real-time, single-shot spectrum measurements of ultrafast optical phenomena. Up to now, this technique has helped scientists to experimentally resolve the entire formation dynamics [2], [3] and localized transient dynamics of solitons in mode-locked fiber lasers [4]-[6]. Besides, a temporal magnifier technique, also known as time lens, was employed to microimaging the ultrafast phenomena in recent years. This technique has been successfully applied to study the real-time full-field characterization of soliton dynamics in mode-locked laser [7], [8].

Abstract:Harmonic mode-locking, realized actively or passively, is an effective technique for increasing the repetition rate of lasers, with important applications in optical sampling, laser micro-machining and frequency metrology. It is critically important to understand how a harmonically mode-locked pulse train responds to external perturbations and noise, so as to make sure that it is stable and resistant to noise. Here, in a series of carefully designed experiments, we elucidate the retiming dynamics of laser pulses generated in a soliton fiber laser harmonically mode-locked at ~2 GHz to the acoustic resonance in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) core. We characterize the self-driven optomechanical lattice along the PCF using a homodyne set-up, and reveal that each soliton undergoes damped oscillatory retiming within its trapping potential after an abrupt perturbation. In addition we show, through statistical analysis of the intra-cavity pulse spacing, how the trapping potentials are effective for suppressing timing jitter. The experimental results are well described using a dynamic model including dissipation, which provides valuable insight into the stability and noise performance of optomechanically mode-locked laser systems, and may also be useful for studying complex inter-soliton interactions.

Abstract:Optimization of self-starting in passively mode-locked optical soliton fiber laser resonators results from a complex transient dynamic involving soliton molecules, soliton-based complexes and supramolecular structures, with particle-like properties. By means of time-stretch dispersive Fourier transform based real-time spectroscopy, we identify a new route to the passive mode-locking of fiber laser solitons. A raised relaxation oscillation stage is followed by the generation of shaking-soliton molecular triplets. The relative phase between satellite and main pulses of shaking soliton triplets evolves chaotically, while the two satellite pulses are orthogonal to each other in their state of polarization. These results provide new perspectives into the soliton formation and the internal dynamics of soliton molecules with higher degrees of freedom.

Abstract:The dynamics and stabilization of solitons are essential for a large variety of fundamental processes in nonlinear optics, condensed matter physics and biology. Taking the solitary propagation of femtosecond pulses in periodic layered Kerr media as an example, we investigate the space-time coupling of optical solitons in a nonlinear resonator. A universal relationship between the beam size and the critical nonlinear phase of the solitary modes is revealed, defining different regions of the resonator stability. Space-time coupling is shown to strongly influence the spectral, spatial and temporal profiles of femtosecond pulses. The sustainable propagation of femtosecond pulses with a GW peak power is demonstrated on resonance, which can be regarded as temporally confined spatial solitons. Taking advantage of the unique characters of these solitary modes, we demonstrate single-stage supercontinuum generation and compression of femtosecond pulses from initially 170 fs down to 22 fs with an efficiency >90%. We also provide evidence of efficient mode self-cleaning which suggests rich spatial-temporal self-organization processes of laser beams in a nonlinear resonator.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the transition dynamics between 2nd and 3rd harmonic mode-locking states using the dispersive Fourier transform technology in a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser. Keeping the pump power unchanged and adjusting polarization controller to change intracavity-loss-dependent gain profile and the spectral filtering effect, a set of soliton dynamics induced by soliton interaction are revealed before the soliton splitting. Solitons undergo similar oscillation behaviors during the reverse decay process of the harmonic mode-locking order until one of the solitons disappears. In these transient dynamics, a significant wavelength shift phenomenon could be observed in the transition process of harmonic orders. The numerical results further show that intracavity spectral filtering effects play key role in the harmonic order transition dynamics process, consistent with experimental results. It provides new insights into the evolution and dynamics behavior in harmonic mode-locked soliton order conversion and its potential applications.

Abstract:Dissipative soliton molecules (DSMs) are of great interest for studying the complexity of nonlinear optical problems as they can map with the matter molecules for making interdisciplinary analogies. In contrast to strongly bound DSMs that have a short time separation between the bound solitons, the complex dynamics and underlying binding mechanism of loosely bound soliton molecules (LBSMs) with orders of magnitude longer time separation remain open questions. To this end, here, we explore real-time spectroscopy using a dispersive temporal interferometer (DTI) to visualize the dynamics of LBSMs in a mode-locked fiber laser and unveil their underlying phase-evolving mechanism. The DTI enables fringe-resolved spectroscopy in real time of the LBSM's evolution by creating duplicates of the LBSM that results in a much closer time separation between the individual solitons of the LBSM. The real-time evolution of the LBSM's phase exhibits a diverging sliding landscape, which is theoretically and experimentally proved to be closely associated with gain dynamics. Based on the understanding of its phase dynamics, we finally demonstrate programmable phase-encoding modulation of the LBSM through gain control. These efforts not only shed light on understanding the mechanism of long-range interactions in LBSMs but also provide an alternative approach for all-optical information processing.

Abstract:Investigated in this paper is the quasi-one-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation, which describes the dynamics of the Bose–Einstein condensates with the harmonic trapping potential and time-varying interatomic interaction. Via the Horita method and symbolic computation, analytic bright N -soliton solution is obtained. One-, two- and three-soliton solutions are analyzed graphically. Based on the limit analysis on the one- and two-soliton solutions, the modulation on the speed of the matter-wave bright solitons is realized. Via the parameters, the interaction between the matter-wave solitons are adjustable. Furthermore, an approach to construct the interference between the matter-wave solitons has been proposed. Finally, investigation on the three-soliton solution verifies our conclusions drawn from the one and two solitons. Our conclusions might be useful in the fields of the control on the matter-wave solitons, atom lasers, and atomic accelerators.

Abstract:Solitons are self-sustained wavepackets that occur in many physical systems. Their recent demonstration in optical microresonators has provided a new platform for the study of nonlinear optical physics with practical implications for miniaturization of time standards, spectroscopy tools, and frequency metrology systems. However, despite its importance to the understanding of soliton physics, as well as development of new applications, imaging the rich dynamical behavior of solitons in microcavities has not been possible. These phenomena require a difficult combination of high-temporal-resolution and long-record-length in order to capture the evolving trajectories of closely spaced microcavity solitons. Here, an imaging method is demonstrated that visualizes soliton motion with sub-picosecond resolution over arbitrary time spans. A wide range of complex soliton transient behavior are characterized in the temporal or spectral domain, including soliton formation, collisions, spectral breathing, and soliton decay. This method can serve as a visualization tool for developing new soliton applications and understanding complex soliton physics in microcavities.

Abstract:Soliton interactions for the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, governing the propagation of envelopes of electromagnetic waves in birefringent optical fibers, are investigated with symbolic computation. Based on the Hirota method, analytic two- and three-soliton solutions for this model are derived. Relevant interaction properties are discussed. Stationary bound vector solitons with the periodic attraction and repulsion are obtained. Soliton intensity could be reduced if the nonlinearity in optical fibers is enlarged, while the soliton period could be prolonged as the group velocity dispersion in the anomalous dispersion regime of optical fibers increases. Through the asymptotic analysis for the two-soliton solutions, interactions between two solitons are proven to be elastic. Besides, parallel soliton transmission systems without soliton interactions are presented. Moreover, interactions between the regular and bound vector solitons are studied. Dual complex structures and triple-soliton bound states are presented. Results could be of certain value to the studies on the soliton control and optical switching technologies.
Real-time measurements of breathing dissipative soliton pairs in mode-locked fiber lasers

Abstract:The emergence of breathing solitons, as well as the breathing soliton molecules undergoing periodic evolution in peak power and spectral width has attracted growing research attentions in dissipative systems. Beyond the intense pulse interactions within tightly-bound states with picoseconds interval, the long-range interplay between pulses separated by nanosecond-scale starts to be investigated in recent years, thus filling the long-standing academic gap between the bound solitons and independent multiple pulses. In this work, we report on the real-time observations of breathing dissipative soliton pairs with nanoseconds’ separations in a fiber laser operating under the threshold of stationary mode locking. Compared with conventional soliton counterpart, here the breathing soliton pair exhibit even more fascinating inter-pulse nonlinear dynamics due to the intriguing self-excited periodic evolutions. The shot-to-shot measurements of pulse intensity profiles, associated with dispersive Fourier transform clearly uncover not only the different breathing phase synchronization and pulse separations among different pulses but also the hysteresis behaviors of the breathing ratio by continuously varying the laser parameters. Moreover, we observed various transient stages in this unstable lasing regime, including the transition between stable single soliton and breathing soliton pair, as well as their long-range breather interaction. These results reveal the breathing multi-pulse state and the instantaneous non-equilibrium dynamics involving the breather pairs, enriching the framework of breathing solitons and opening a novel possibility to explore the internal motions of breathing soliton complex in nonlinear systems.

Abstract:Dispersive waves (DWs) are ubiquitous in nonlinear optical systems that host optical solitons. In particular, DWs in soliton fiber lasers have attracted continuous interest over the past decades since they are closely related to laser soliton instabilities. Meanwhile, intra-cavity DWs also play important roles in solion interactions. While previous studies mostly focused on their spectral properties, characterizations and manipulations of the intra-cavity DWs in the time domain remain unexplored. Here, we report the experimental studies on temporal structures of intra-cavity DWs, unveiling their exponentially-decaying profiles which can be manipulated by varying cavity parameters, following a simple analytic model. We also studied the evolution dynamics of the intra-cavity DWs under abrupt cavity parameter variations. We observed that both the amplitude and the width of the DW waveform went through variations as the pump power was changed, while their evolution trajectories followed intimately that of the soliton energy. These results provide insights into the DW emission mechanism in mode-locked lasers, and the control methods of intra-cavity DWs may find potential applications in the fields of ultrafast pulse generation and soliton dynamics.
