Abstract:This study empirically investigated the effect of local fighting for resources and dominance on education, by employing data pertaining to historical clan conflicts and contemporary education in China. The results showed that people in counties with historical clan conflicts have been more engaged in martial arts, receiving significantly fewer years of education. The effect is more significant for men than women and for rural people than urban people. Furthermore, by employing drastic population outflows since the mid-1990s in China, we found that population outflow significantly weakens the negative effects of clan conflict for rural males born between 1978 to 1994.
