Abstract:The light-absorbing organic aerosol (OA), known as brown carbon (BrC), has important radiative impacts; however, its sources and evolution after emission remain to be elucidated. In this study, the light absorption at multiple wavelengths, mass spectra of OA and microphysical properties of black carbon (BC) were characterized at a typical suburban environment in Beijing. The absorption of BC is constrained by its size distribution and mixing state, and the BrC absorption is obtained by subtracting the BC absorption from the total aerosol absorption. Aerosol absorption was further apportioned to BC, primary BrC and secondary BrC by applying the least correlation between secondary BrC and BC. The multilinear regression analysis on the factorized OA mass spectra indicated that the OA from traffic and biomass burning emission contributed to primary BrC. Importantly, the moderately oxygenated OA (O / C = 0.62) was revealed to highly correlate with secondary BrC. These OA had higher nitrogen content, in line with the nitrogen-containing functional groups detected by the Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The photochemical processes were found to reduce the mass absorption cross section (MAC) of primary OA, reducing its contribution to total absorption by 20 %, at the same time increasing MAC for secondary OA, which showed a 30 % enhancement in contribution to total absorbance, implying the concurrent whitening and darkening of BrC. This provides field evidence that the photochemically produced secondary nitrogen-containing OA can considerably compensate for some bleaching effect on the primary BrC, hereby causing radiative impacts.

Abstract:Biomass combustion produces black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) aerosols that contribute substantially to warming the Earth's atmosphere. Accurate knowledge of their emissions and absorption per unit mass (mass absorption cross-section; MAC) can be used to quantify the radiative impact of these combustion products. We isolated particles generated from laboratory biomass burning fires by morphology and found that some particles from biomass burning do not correspond to either BC or BrC according to common operational definitions. Unlike BrC, these particles strongly absorb red light, with a MAC and spectral dependence of absorption between that of BrC and BC. They also have intermediate volatility: they survive thermodenuding at 250 °C but do not heat to incandescence in a single particle soot photometer (SP2) instrument. We also found evidence for intermediate properties in ambient wildfire smoke from the 2013 Rim Fire in California. More work is needed to understand how much this intermediate material contributes to atmospheric light absorption from typical combustion, whether or not it corresponds to "tar balls," and how it may affect previous MAC measurements that were attributed to enhanced absorption by transparent coatings.Copyright © 2019 American Association for Aerosol Research

Changes in Light Absorption by Brown Carbon in Soot Particles Due to Heterogeneous Ozone Aging in a Smog Chamber.

Abstract:Light absorption by brown carbon (BrC) is dynamic due to atmospheric aging processes, leading to complex and poorly constrained effects on photochemistry and climate. In this study, a smog chamber was used to simulate the heterogeneous ozone (O-3) aging of soot particles. Twelve aging times and seven O-3 concentrations were set to investigate the effects of aging degree on BrC light absorption. The results showed that light absorption by BrC was enhanced after O-3 aging, but followed a non-monotonic trend with an initial increase and subsequent decrease. An aging time of 60 min and O-3 concentration of 1.2 ppm were optimal for enhancing BrC absorption, where the contribution of BrC to total absorption and the contribution of BrC relative to black carbon absorption at 370 nm of ozonized soot were 23.0 +/- 1.8% and 30.0 +/- 3.0%, respectively, much greater than those of fresh soot (8.1 +/- 1.1% and 8.8 +/- 1.3%, respectively). The absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE) and delta C (Delta C) of ozonized soot at 60 min ranged from 1.18 +/- 0.01 to 1.31 +/- 0.03 and from 13.5 +/- 7.0 to 24.3 +/- 13.5 mu g m(-3), respectively, and were greater than those of fresh soot (1.12 +/- 0.02 and 8.0 +/- 0.8 mu g m(-3)), but also showed non-monotonic trends, suggesting the formation of BrC during O-3 aging. Comparative results indicated that AAE might be a better BrC indicator for soot than Delta C. The non-monotonic trend was tentatively explained by changes in organic carbon, oxygenated functional groups and conjugated structures, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation and oxygenated PAH formation. The relative intensities of oxidative formation and degradation of chromophores may determine BrC evolution during O-3 aging. Abstract:Brown carbon (BrC) is a crucial light-absorption component in the atmosphere, playing a profound role in the radiation budget. Variations in the light-absorption properties and molecular composition of BrC due to atmospheric photochemical aging process have not been well constrained, leading to high uncertainty in evaluating its global radiative effect. The molecular composition of atmospheric BrC were investigated to stress the BrC photobleaching in this work. In total, 896 organic compounds were identified, which accounted for 2.5%-26.1% of organic aerosol in mass concentration. We found that solar radiation led to the declined mass absorption coefficient at 375 nm (MAC(375)), indicating BrC photobleaching, coinciding with an elevated mass fraction of carboxylic acids (CAs). This phenomenon was more pronounced under higher-energy solar radiation. Specifically, the mass fraction of nitrocarboxylic acids (NCAs) in CAs increased during BrC photobleaching, which was potentially caused by the oxidation of nitrophenols, resulting in an similar to 83.3% decrease in MAC(375). Our findings provide direct observational evidence of BrC photobleaching from a molecular-level perspective and elucidate a potential BrC photobleaching pathway in the urban atmosphere.

Abstract:The climate forcing of light-absorbing organic aerosol, or brown carbon (BrC), emitted from biomass burning may be significant but is currently poorly constrained, in part due to evolution during its residence time in the atmosphere. Here, the effects of ambient relative humidity (RH) and particle volatility on the heterogeneous OH oxidation of primary BrC were investigated in laboratory experiments. Particles were generated from smoldering pine wood, isolated from gaseous emissions, conditioned at 200 °C in a thermal denuder to remove the most volatile particulate organics, and injected into a smog chamber, where they were conditioned at either 15 or 60% RH and exposed to gas phase OH radicals. Changes in composition were monitored using an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS), and changes in absorption at 405 nm were monitored using a photoacoustic spectrometer. Heterogeneous OH oxidation of nascent BrC at 60% RH resulted in steady increases in the AMS fraction of CO2+ (associated with carboxylic acids), the O : C ratio, and the carbon oxidation state, consistent with extensive functionalization. These composition changes corresponded first to very rapid absorption enhancement and then bleaching. Net bleaching was observed after the equivalent of 10 h residence time in the atmosphere. The evolution did not depend strongly on RH, consistent with homogeneously well-mixed primary BrC even at 15% RH at room temperature. In contrast, the evolution did depend strongly on the pre-treatment of the particles, such that only bleaching occurred for particles treated at 200 °C. This suggests that lower volatility constituents of ambient primary BrC have less capacity for absorption enhancement in the atmosphere upon heterogeneous oxidation, potentially as they are already more functionalized and/or oligomeric.

Abstract:The light-absorbing organic aerosol (OA) commonly referred to as "brown carbon" (BrC) has attracted considerable attention in recent years because of its potential to affect atmospheric radiation balance, especially in the ultraviolet region and thus impact photochemical processes. A growing amount of data has indicated that BrC is prevalent in the atmosphere, which has motivated numerous laboratory and field studies; however, our understanding of the relationship between the chemical composition and optical properties of BrC remains limited. We conducted chamber experiments to investigate the effect of various volatile organic carbon (VOC) precursors, NOx concentrations, photolysis time, and relative humidity (RH) on the light absorption of selected secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Light absorption of chamber-generated SOA samples, especially aromatic SOA, was found to increase with NOx concentration, at moderate RH, and for the shortest photolysis aging times. The highest mass absorption coefficient (MAC) value is observed from toluene SOA products formed under high-NOx conditions at moderate RH, in which nitro-aromatics were previously identified as the major light-absorbing compounds. BrC light absorption is observed to decrease with photolysis time, correlated with a decline of the organic nitrate fraction of SOA. SOA formed from mixtures of aromatics and isoprene absorb less visible (Vis) and ultraviolet (UV) light than SOA formed from aromatic precursors alone on a mass basis. However, the mixed SOA absorption was underestimated when optical properties were predicted using a two-product SOA formation model, as done in many current climate models. Further investigation, including analysis on detailed mechanisms, are required to explain the discrepancy.
Brown Carbon in Primary and Aged Coal Combustion Emission

Abstract:Smog chamber experiments were conducted to characterize the light absorption of brown carbon (BrC) from primary and photochemically aged coal combustion emissions. Light absorption was measured by the UV-visible spectrophotometric analysis of water and methanol extracts of filter samples. The single-scattering albedo at 450 nm was 0.73 ± 0.10 for primary emissions and 0.75 ± 0.13 for aged emissions. The light absorption coefficient at 365 nm of methanol extracts was higher than that of water extracts by a factor of 10 for primary emissions and a factor of 7 for aged emissions. This suggests that the majority of BrC is water-insoluble even after aging. The mass absorption efficiency of this BrC (MAE365) for primary OA (POA) was dependent on combustion conditions, with an average of 0.84 ± 0.54 m2 g-1, which was significantly higher than that for aged OA (0.24 ± 0.18 m2 g-1). Secondary OA (SOA) dominated aged OA and the decreased MAE365 after aging indicates that SOA is less light absorbing than POA and/or that BrC is bleached (oxidized) with aging. The estimated MAE365 of SOA (0.14 ± 0.08 m2 g-1) was much lower than that of POA. A comparison of MAE365 of residential coal combustion with other anthropogenic sources suggests that residential coal combustion emissions are among the strongest absorbing BrC organics.

Abstract:Straw burning comprises more than 30% of all types of burned biomass in Asia, while the estimation of the emitted aerosols' direct radiative forcing effect suffers from large uncertainties, especially when atmospheric aging processes are considered. In this study, the light absorption properties of primary and aged straw burning aerosols in open fire were characterized at 7 wavelengths ranging from 370 nm to 950 nm in a chamber. The primary rice, corn and wheat straw burning bulk aerosols together had a mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of 2.43 ± 1.36 m2 g−1 at 520 nm and an absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) of 1.93 ± 0.71, while the primary sorghum straw burning bulk aerosols were characterized by a relatively lower MAE of 0.95 ± 0.54 m2 g−1 and a higher AAE of 4.80 ± 0.68. Both the MAE and AAE of primary aerosols can be well parameterized by the (PM-BC)/BC ratio (in wt.). The MAE of black carbon (BC) increased by 11–190% during photoreactions equivalent to 16–60 h of atmospheric aging, which was positively correlated with the (PM-BC)/(BC) ratio. The MAE of organic aerosols first slightly increased or leveled off, and then decreased. Specifically, at 370 nm, the first growth/plateau stage lasted until OH exposure reached 0.47–1.29 × 1011 molecule cm−3 s, and the following period exhibited decay rates of 1.0–2.8 × 10−12 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 against the OH radical, corresponding to half-lives of 46–134 h in a typical ambient condition. During photoreactions, competition among the lensing effect, growth/bleach of organic chromophores, and particle mass and size growth complicated the evolution of the direct radiative forcing effect. It is concluded that rice and corn straw burning aerosols maintained a warming effect after aging, while the cooling effect of fresh sorghum straw burning aerosols increased with aging.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important constituents of brown carbon (BrC) that are subject to atmospheric processing by gas-phase oxidants such as the hydroxyl radical (OH) and the nitrate radical (NO3). While OH oxidation of BrC has been investigated extensively, studies of NO3 oxidation are limited. Here, we generated BrC from the combustion of toluene containing a complex mixture of light-absorbing PAHs and investigated changes in their chemical composition and light-absorption properties following exposure to NO3 in an oxidation flow reactor. Three types of BrC were studied, with varying light-absorption properties that were classified in terms of the imaginary part of the refractive index (k) as: light BrC (k at 532 nm, k532 = 0.008), medium BrC (k532 = 0.026), and dark BrC (k532 = 0.091). Exposure to NO3 led to ∼30% increase in k532 of the light and medium BrC and ∼5% decrease in k532 of the dark BrC. This discrepancy is attributed to two competing effects: 1) addition of chromophoric functional groups by NO3-induced heterogeneous oxidation and 2) condensation of gas-phase PAH + NO3 oxidation products that were less-absorbing than the particulate PAHs. Analysis of the aerosol chemical evolution revealed that effect (2) was more important in the dark BrC experiments. We performed optical calculations to isolate effect (1) and showed that heterogeneous oxidation led to ∼50% increase in k532 for all the BrC types. These results indicate that NO3-induced heterogeneous oxidation darkens some types of atmospheric BrC, which can counterbalance bleaching effects induced by OH oxidation.Copyright © 2020 American Association for Aerosol Research

Abstract:Particulate brown carbon (BrC) in the atmosphere absorbs light at subvisible wavelengths and has poorly constrained but potentially large climate forcing impacts. BrC from biomass burning has virtually unknown lifecycle and atmospheric stability. Here, BrC emitted from intense wildfires was measured in plumes transported over 2days from two main fires, during the 2013 NASA SEAC4RS mission. Concurrent measurements of organic aerosol (OA) and black carbon (BC) mass concentration, BC coating thickness, absorption angstrom ngstrom exponent, and OA oxidation state reveal that the initial BrC emitted from the fires was largely unstable. Using back trajectories to estimate the transport time indicates that BrC aerosol light absorption decayed in the plumes with a half-life of 9 to 15 h, measured over day and night. Although most BrC was lost within a day, possibly through chemical loss and/or evaporation, the remaining persistent fraction likely determines the background BrC levels most relevant for climate forcing.

Abstract:Wildfires emit large amounts of black carbon and light-absorbing organic carbon, known as brown carbon, into the atmosphere. These particles perturb Earth's radiation budget through absorption of incoming shortwave radiation. It is generally thought that brown carbon loses its absorptivity after emission in the atmosphere due to sunlight-driven photochemical bleaching. Consequently, the atmospheric warming effect exerted by brown carbon remains highly variable and poorly represented in climate models compared with that of the relatively nonreactive black carbon. Given that wildfires are predicted to increase globally in the coming decades, it is increasingly important to quantify these radiative impacts. Here we present measurements of ensemble-scale and particle-scale shortwave absorption in smoke plumes from wildfires in the western United States. We find that a type of dark brown carbon contributes three-quarters of the short visible light absorption and half of the long visible light absorption. This strongly absorbing organic aerosol species is water insoluble, resists daytime photobleaching and increases in absorptivity with night-time atmospheric processing. Our findings suggest that parameterizations of brown carbon in climate models need to be revised to improve the estimation of smoke aerosol radiative forcing and associated warming.

Abstract:Chemical components of organic aerosol (OA) selectively absorb light at short wavelengths. In this study, the prevalence, sources, and optical importance of this so-called brown carbon (BrC) aerosol component are investigated throughout the North American continental tropospheric column during a summer of extensive biomass burning. Spectrophotometric absorption measurements on extracts of bulk aerosol samples collected from an aircraft over the central USA were analyzed to directly quantify BrC abundance. BrC was found to be prevalent throughout the 1 to 12 km altitude measurement range, with dramatic enhancements in biomass-burning plumes. BrC to black carbon (BC) ratios, under background tropospheric conditions, increased with altitude, consistent with a corresponding increase in the absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE) determined from a three-wavelength particle soot absorption photometer (PSAP). The sum of inferred BC absorption and measured BrC absorption at 365 nm was within 3% of the measured PSAP absorption for background conditions and 22% for biomass burning. A radiative transfer model showed that BrC absorption reduced top-of-atmosphere (TOA) aerosol forcing by similar to 20% in the background troposphere. Extensive radiative model simulations applying this study background tropospheric conditions provided a look-up chart for determining radiative forcing efficiencies of BrC as a function of a surface-measured BrC : BC ratio and single scattering albedo (SSA). The chart is a first attempt to provide a tool for better assessment of brown carbon's forcing effect when one is limited to only surface data. These results indicate that BrC is an important contributor to direct aerosol radiative forcing.

Abstract:Links between the optical properties and chemical compositions of brown carbon (BrC) are poorly understood because of the complexity of BrC chromophores. We conducted field studies simultaneously at both vehicle influenced site and biomass burning-affected site in China in polluted winter. The chemical compositions and light absorption values of functionalized aromatic compounds, including phenyl aldehyde, phenyl acid, and nitroaromatic compounds, were measured. P-phthalic acid, nitrophenols and nitrocatechols were dominant BrC species, accounting for over 50% of the concentration of identified chromophores. Nitrophenols and nitrocatechols contributed more than 50% of the identified BrC absorbance between 300 and 400 nm. Oxidation of biomass burning-related products (e.g., pyrocatechol and methylcatechols) and anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (e.g., benzene and toluene) generated similar BrC chromophores, implying that these functionalized aromatic compounds play an important role in both environments. Compared with the biomass burning-affected site (22%), functionalized aromatic compounds at vehicle-influenced site accounted for a higher percentage of BrC absorption (25%). This research improves our understanding of the links between optical properties and composition of BrC, and the difference between BrC chromophores from BB-influenced area and vehicle affected area under polluted atmospheric conditions. Abstract:Coating enhancement of black carbon (BC) light absorption (E abs ) is a large uncertainty in modelling direct radiative forcing (DRF) by BC. Reported E abs values after atmospheric aging vary widely and the mechanisms responsible for enhancing BC absorption remain elusive. Here, we report on the direct field measurement of size-resolved mixing state, E abs and aerosol single scattering albedo (SSA) at λ = 532 nm at a rural site in East China from June to July 2016. Strong diurnal variability of E abs , SSA, and O x (O x = NO 2 + O 3 , a proxy for atmospheric photochemical aging) was observed. A three-stage absorption enhancement process for collapsed semispherical to fully compact spherical morphology BC with photochemical aging was suggested. For O x below 35 ppbv, E abs increased slowly with O x mixing ratio and ranged from 2.0 to 2.2 (with a growth rate of ~ 0.03 ppbv −1 ). Eabs was stable (E abs = 2.26 ± 0.06) between 35 to 50 ppbv O x . Thirdly, for O x levels above 50 ppbv, Eabs grew rapidly from 2.3 to 2.8 (at a growth rate of ~ 0.18 ppbv −1 ). A method that combined E abs and SSA was developed to retrieve the fraction contribution of BC absorption ( f BC ), lensing driven enhancement ( f Lens ), as well as the fractional contribution of coating absorption (fraction absorption contribution ( f Shell ), the coated shell diameter (D Shell ) and the imaginary part of the complex refractive index (CRI) of the shell ( k Shell )). Parameterization of Eabs and SSA captures much of the influence of BC coating and the particle absorption, and provides a plausible new method to better constrain the contribution of BC to the DRF. In our measurements at this site, the absorption amplification depended mainly on the coating thickness and the absorption of coating materials. The lensing driven enhancement was reduced by light absorption of the shell. Our observations highlight the crucial role of photochemical processes in modifying the absorption of BC-containing particles. One implication of these findings is that the contribution of light-absorbing organic compounds (Brown carbon, BrC) at longer aging time should be included in climate models.

Abstract:lack of information on the radiative effects of refractory black carbon (rBC) emitted from biomass burning is a significant gap in our understanding of climate change. A custom-made combustion chamber was used to simulate the open burning of crop residues and investigate the impacts of rBC size and mixing state on the particles' optical properties. Average rBC mass median diameters ranged from 141 to 162 nm for the rBC produced from different types of crop residues. The number fraction of thickly-coated rBC varied from 53 to 64%, suggesting that a majority of the freshly emitted rBC were internally mixed. By comparing the result of observed mass absorption cross-section to that calculated with Mie theory, large light absorption enhancement factors (1.7-1.9) were found for coated particles relative to uncoated cores. These effects were strongly positively correlated with the percentage of coated particles but independent of rBC core size. We suggest that rBC from open biomass burning may have strong impact on air pollution and radiative forcing immediately after their production.

Abstract:So far, the research on brown carbon in atmospheric particulates is mainly limited to the characterization of its optical properties, and its complex composition limits its correlation with reactive oxygen species(ROS). Therefore, we used high-resolution data to study the changes in the optical properties of brown carbon and its ROS at different times of the day. This work divided brown carbon into particulate, water-soluble, and water-insoluble brown carbon and compared their optical properties and correlation with ROS. The results show that the light absorption characteristics of particulate, insoluble, or water-soluble brown carbon have apparent differences. Water-soluble brown carbon is the main contributor to the light absorption of brown carbon, reaching 74% of the particulate brown carbon, and further compositional analysis showed that nitro-PAHs were dominant in brown carbon at noon, while HULIS was significant at the rest of the time. Meanwhile, water-soluble and particulate brown carbons strongly contributed to particulate ROS. These results also show that the ROS of different forms of brown carbon in the atmosphere is different, which will help to deeply understand the health hazards of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere.
Role of elemental carbon in the photochemical aging of soot.

Abstract:Soot, which consists of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), is a significant component of the total aerosol mass in the atmosphere. Photochemical oxidation is an important aging pathway for soot. It is commonly believed that OC is photoactive but EC, albeit its strong light absorption, is photochemically inert. Here, by taking advantage of the different light absorption properties of OC and EC, we provide direct experimental evidence that EC also plays an important role in the photochemical aging of soot by initiating the oxidation of OC, even under red light irradiation. We show that nascent soot, in addition to undergoing photochemical oxidation under blue light with a wavelength of 440 nm, undergoes similar oxidation under red light irradiation of λ = 648 nm (L648). However, separated OC (extracted from soot by n-hexane) and EC exhibit little reactivity under L648 These observations indicate that EC plays a pivotal role in photoaging of soot by adsorbing light to initiate the oxidation of OC. Comparison of in situ IR spectra and photoelectrochemical behaviors suggests that EC-initiated photooxidation of OC proceeds through an electron transfer pathway, which is distinct from the photoaging induced by light absorption of OC. Since the absorption spectra of EC have a much larger overlap with the solar spectra than those of OC, our results provide insight into the chemical mechanism leading to rapid soot aging by organic species observed from atmospheric field measurements.
