Abstract:The support has an extremely important effect on the preparation of high-performance thin film composite (TFC) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, for its physical structure and chemical properties can greatly affect the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. A commercial lithium ion battery separator porous polyethylene (PE) membrane has many advantages, such as its high surface porosity, low curvature, excellent chemical resistance and low cost. Nevertheless, the inherent hydrophobicity and large pore size of it make the preparation of a polyamide (PA) selection layer on its surface challenging. Here we report that modification of the PE membrane by depositing the copolymer of gallic acid (GA) and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) on its surface can obtain the viable support for IP. The effects of co-deposition time on the structure, morphology, and chemical properties of PE-t supports and TFC-PE-t membranes were characterized by the SEM, AFM, FTIR, XPS, Zeta potential measurements, etc. When the modification time of the support was 4 h, the TFC-PE RO membrane attained a favorable water permeance of 2.33 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and an extraordinary NaCl rejection of 99.03% because of the suitable hydrophilicity and pore structure of PE-4 support. Our study is expected to provide a simple and efficient pathway where hydrophobic porous membranes can be applied in the area of TFC composite membranes.
