Abstract:Efficient hydrolysis of beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds of cellulose is a pivotal step in biorefineries of cellulosic biomass. In this work, we discovered that paired PdCl2-CuCl exhibited excellent synergetic catalytic activity over the single PdCl2 or CuCl2 in the hydrolysis of beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMim]Cl) and further investigated the catalytic species in this system. The catalytic activity increased and reached a plateau at a CuCl/PdCl2 ratio of 1 with increasing molar ratio of CuCl/PdCl2 while keeping the Pd concentration constant. A combination of experimental evidence based on in situ far-infrared absorption, X-ray absorption, X-ray photoelectron, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies and DFT calculations demonstrate the coupling reaction between [Pcl(II)Cl(4)](2-) and [(CuCl3)-Cl-I](2-) via the Cl bridge to form the heterometallic complex anion [Cl2PdII-Cl-(CuCl2)-Cl-I](2-). The heterometallic species is stable during the reaction and maintains its catalytic performance in the presence of various oxygenate additives. Using paired PdCl2-CuCl as a catalyst, the activation energy of hydrolytic cleavage of beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds of cellobiose is determined as low as 95.8 kJ/mol. PdCl2-CuCl/[BMim]Cl combined with CrCl3 can be reused five times in cellobiose conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) without an apparent decrease of catalytic activity. The performance of this catalytic system is further verified for efficient cellulose conversion. More than 60% product yield is obtained at 100 degrees C from the cellulose, affording monosaccharides for efficient production of high value-added chemicals, such as 5-HMF, when CrCl3 is present to catalyze the conversion of glucose to 5-HMF.

Abstract:This paper describes a generalized approach for the selective electrocatalytic C-C bond splitting in aliphatic alcohols at low temperature in aqueous state, with ethanol as an example. We show that selective C-C bond cleavage, leading to carbon dioxide, is possible in high pH aqueous media at low overpotentials. This improved selectivity and activity is achieved using a solution-born co-catalyst based on Pb(IV) acetate, which controls the mode of the ethanol adsorption so as to facilitate direct activation of the C-C bond. The simultaneously formed under-potentially deposited (UPD) Pb and surface lead hydroxide change the functionality of the catalyst surface for efficient promotion of CO oxidation. The resulting catalyst retains an unprecedented ability to sustain the full oxidation reaction pathway on an extended time scale of hours as opposed to minutes without addition of Pb(IV) acetate.

Abstract:Selective hydrolysis of carbohydrates is vital to the processing of these molecules in biology but has rarely been achieved with synthetic catalysts. The challenge is especially difficult because the catalyst needs to distinguish the inversion of a single hydroxyl and the α or β glycosidic bonds that join monosaccharide building blocks. Here, we report synthetic glycosidase prepared through molecular imprinting within a cross-linked micelle. The nanoparticle catalyst resembles natural enzymes in dimension, water solubility, and a hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface–core topology. Its boronic acid functionalized active site binds its targeted glycoside substrate and an acid cofactor simultaneously, with the acidic group in close proximity to the exocyclic glycosidic oxygen. The hydrophobically anchored acid cofactor is tunable in acidity and causes selective cleavage of the targeted glycoside in mildly acidic water. Abstract:The peptides, CH3CO-Met-His-GlyH, CH3CO-CysMe-His-GlyH, CH3CO-CysMe-His-Gly-OEt and its imidazole derivatives, Nτ-benzyl, Nτ-tosyl, Nτ-benzyl-Nπ-phenacyl, have been synthesized and used as model compounds for the mechanistic study of the selective cleavage of cytochrome c promoted by Pd(II) complexes. The peptide bond cleavage of these substrates by cis-[Pd(en)(solvent)2]2+ (solvent: D2O or CD3OD) was monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The results showed that the methionine-containing tripeptide differs from the S-methylcysteine-containing tripeptides in the mode of coordination to Pd(II). The former coordinates to Pd(II) through a sulfur atom, an amide nitrogen of methionine and an Nπ atom of imidazole, forming a polycyclic chelate, and is resistant to hydrolysis. The latter, as a model compound for cleavage of the His18–Thr19 bond in cytochrome c with Pd(II) complexes, coordinates to Pd(II) via a sulfur atom, an amide nitrogen and a carbonyl oxygen of histidine to form a polycyclic chelate in which the His–Gly peptide bond is cleaved. Kinetic studies showed that protonation of the Nπ atom of imidazole in the S-methylcysteine-containing tripeptides is one of the key factors in controlling the cleavage of the His–Gly bond. In order to obtain theoretical guidance on the cleavage reaction, the geometries of a representative Nπ protonated tripeptide cation of CH3CO-CysMe-His-GlyNMe and its Pd(II) complex with and without ancillary water molecules are optimized at the B3LYP density functional theory level using 3-21G, 6-31G(d) and LanL2DZ basis sets. Based on the experimental and theoretical results obtained from the model compounds, a mechanism is proposed for the first time to explain the nature of selective cleavage of the His18–Thr19 bond in cytochrome c promoted by Pd(II) complexes. Coordination of Pd(II) to the carbonyl oxygen of histidine and hydrogen bond formed between the CO and ancillary dimer water weaken and polarize the CO double bond of histidine, giving rise to cleavage of the peptide bond.
Supported Pd Catalysts for the C—O Cleavage of the Lignin Derived Model Dimers Through Intramolecular Hydrogenolysis Reaction

Abstract:The selective depolymerization of the C-O ether bonds in lignin has attracted considerable attentions which would facilitate the valorization of lignin. The model compounds with beta-O-4 type ether bonds were the most frequently studied molecules. In this study, we used 2-(2-methoxyphenyl)oxy-1-phenethanol (1a) as model compound for the C-O cleavage through intramolecular hydrogenolysis reaction. The hydroxymethyl group acted as the hydrogen source by dehydrogenating over Pd catalysts. Then, the cleavage of C-O bond takes place on the supported Pd catalyst with Pd-H active species. All the catalysts were prepared and characterized by XRD, TEM and BET. Among different metal catalysts, Pd catalysts gave best results toward the C-O bond cleavage reaction. After that, the influences of solvent were studied and the best solvent was cyclohexane. Different additives such as acids and bases were also tested in the model reaction. The strong base (i.e. KOH) showed negative effect on the product yield, but a weak base (i.e. Na2HPO4) gave a promotion effect on the reaction. The result indicated that the modification of the Pd catalysts' supports would be a good option for the C-O bond cleavage reaction. Thus, different Pd catalysts with different supporting materials were prepared and tested, and found that MgO, a weak basic support, gave promoted performance on this reaction. Finally, to figure out the reaction pathway, the reaction mixtures with different reaction time were analyzed by GC-MS which showed that the ketone was the main intermediate of the reaction. The result indicated that the main route for the intramolecular hydrogenolysis reaction was (1) the dehydrogenation of -CCHOH to ketone to form Pd-H species and then (2) the C-O bond was cleavage by the Pd-H species to form the depolymerization products.
Understanding the mechanism and reactivity of Pd-catalyzed C-P bond metathesis of aryl phosphines: a computational study

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed single bond metathesis has recently emerged as a useful strategy for functional group transfer. In this work, we explored the mechanism and reactivity profile of Pd/PhI-cocatalyzed C-P bond metathesis between aryl phosphines using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The overall single bond metathesis involves two Pd(ii)-catalyzed C-P reductive eliminations and two Pd(0)-catalyzed C-P oxidative additions, which allows the reversible C-P bond cleavage and formation of the phosphonium cation. Distortion/interaction analysis indicates that the facile C-P bond cleavage and formation of the phosphonium cation are due to the involvement of coordinating aryl phosphine in the process. In addition, the substituent effects on the reaction kinetics and thermodynamics of metathesis were computed, which provides helpful mechanistic information for the design of related single bond metathesis reactions.
Cation-mediated acid-base pairs for mild oxidative cleavage of lignocellulosic β-1,4-glycosidic bonds

Abstract:Solar-driven lignocellulosic biomass photoreforming holds significant promise for the production of value-added chemicals and fuels. The cleavage of the β-1,4-glycosidic bond is crucial for the effective conversion of lignocellulosic biomass. Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) with acid-base pairs (M-C sites) is developed through heteroatomic carbon incorporation and cation insertion. It can be used for the gentle oxidation of cellobiose to monosaccharides, bypassing the formation of organic acids such as gluconic acid and glucaric acid. A series of different alkaline/alkaline-earth cation for regulation of acid-base pairs exhibited a negative correlation between β-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage and cation radii. In particular, the introduction of short-radius cations (such as Li) into PCN enabled the formation of acid-base (M-C) pairs characterized by strong acidity. It also enhanced electron delocalization around M-C sites, potentially promoting the generation of reactive radicals in the reaction. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis confirmed the presence of •OH radicals. The mild oxidative species, are the primary reactive radicals responsible for β-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage in cellobiose. This study provides insightful evidence for the rational regulation of acid-base sites in facilitating β-1,4-glycosidic bond cleavage. It sheds light on the oxidative cleavage mechanisms integral to lignocellulosic biomass photoreforming, offering insights for advancing sustainable biomass conversion technologies.

Experimental–Computational Synergy for Selective Pd(II)-Catalyzed C–H Activation of Aryl and Alkyl Groups

Abstract:C-H activation and functionalization are on the forefront of modern synthetic chemistry. Imagine if any C-H bond of a molecule could be converted to a C-X bond, where X is the target functionality-this would alter the synthetic blueprints for complex target molecules since it would provide novel disconnections in retrosynthetic analysis. Collaborations between many experimental and computational groups have led to rapid developments of new C-H functionalization methods. Our groups represent an example of this; we were brought together as part of the NSF-supported Center for Selective C-H Functionalization. Many examples of experimental-computational synergy for selective Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H activation of aryl and alkyl groups are described in this Account. We describe computations by the Houk group made in response to experimental stimuli by the Yu group. The first section discusses the experimental and computational investigations of oxazoline-directed stereoselective Pd(II)-catalyzed C(sp3)-H bond activation that occurs through the concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) pathway involving a monomeric Pd(II) complex. The second section involves two types of bidentate ligands, mono-N-protected amino acid (MPAA) and acetyl-protected aminoethyl quinoline (APAQ) ligands that promote the C-H activation reactions with the ligand as the internal base. In the MPAA-assisted remote C-H bond activation, the basic dianionic amidate ligand participates in the deprotonation of a specific C-H bond. This mechanism accounts for the improved reactivity and selectivity in C-H activation reactions with MPAA ligands. The chiral APAQ ligands enable asymmetric palladium insertion into prochiral C-H bonds on a single methylene carbon center. The dianionic amidate of the APAQ ligand acts as an intramolecular base to deprotonate the methylene C-H asymmetrically and facilitate chiral Pd-C bond formation. The origins of the dramatic differences of five-membered (relatively inactive) and six-membered (highly active) chelation in β-methylene C(sp3)-H activation reactions by a Pd(II) catalyst were explained with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This is mainly due to the steric repulsions between the ArF group of the substrate and the quinoline group of the ligand. The steric repulsion between the ArF group of the substrate and the quinoline group of the APAQ ligand destabilizes the five-membered chelate transition structure, increasing the energy of the transition state. The third section discusses a mechanism involving a Pd-Ag heterodimeric complex intermediate in the template-directed, Pd(II)-catalyzed remote meta functionalization of toluene derivatives and benzoic acid derivatives. The nitrile directing group of the template coordinates with Ag while the Pd is placed adjacent to the meta-C-H bond in the transition state, leading to the observed high meta selectivity. The selective activation of remote meta-C-H bonds at various distances can be achieved by tuning the template. The dual role of AgOAc as both an oxidant and part of the heteronuclear active species in the mechanism involving PdAg(OAc)3 was determined by DFT calculations and is in accord with literature information about complexes. For the systems discussed in these three sections, the similarity is that they all proceed via the CMD mechanism. The differences lie in the proton acceptors and the active Pd species. Common CMD involves a monomeric Pd mechanism with acetate as the proton acceptor. Both MPAA and APAQ ligands react via monomeric Pd mechanisms with a ligand moiety (the amidate oxygen) as the proton acceptor. Nitrile-containing template-mediated meta-C-H activations proceed via a Pd-Ag heterodimeric mechanism, still with acetate as the proton acceptor. The interaction between our two groups, experts in experiment and computation, and the discoveries made possible by that interplay are highlighted in this Account.
Enhancing the Synergistic Effect of Bifunctional Pd-Based Catalyst by Phosphonic Acid for Cellobiose Conversion to Sorbitol

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of cellulosic biomass into polyols is an effective approach for biomass upgrading. However, the conversion involves cascade reactions which require various catalytic sites cooperation for activating specific steps, resulting in low efficiency. Here, we propose a bifunctional catalyst containing acid sites and hydrogenation capacity for polyol production with cellobiose as the model compound of cellulose. Phosphonic acids (PAs) containing either methyl (MPA) or aminomethyl (NH(2)MPA) tails were used to tune the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst to form monolayers, thereby modulating the surface physiochemical properties and introducing multiple catalytic sites. An increasing ratio of PdO/Pd and a strong metal-support interaction were observed after PA modification, which could boost the hydrogenation activity for cellobiose. Furthermore, Pd/Al2O3-MPA exhibited excellent hydrolytic hydrogenation activity due to the increase of Lewis acid sites with good durability under hydrothermal conditions by MPA modification, achieving a 78.5% yield of sorbitol at 180 degrees C for 5 h. A plausible mechanism for enhancing the synergistic effect of Pd and support over Pd/Al2O3-MPA was also proposed. This investigation provides a novel strategy for rationally designing hydrothermally stable bifunctional catalysts to utilize biomass in a more effective way.
Hydrogenolysis of Glycerol on Bimetallic Pd-Cu/solid-base Catalysts Prepared Via Layered Double Hydroxides Precursors

Abstract:A series of bimetallic Pd-Cu/solid-base catalysts were prepared via thermal decomposition of PdxCu0.4Mg5.6−xAl2(OH)16CO3 layered double hydroxides precursors and used in hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2O oxidation and followed H2 titration characterizations confirmed that well structured layered double hydroxides PdxCu0.4Mg5.6−xAl2(OH)16CO3 crystals could be prepared when the amount of added Pd was less than x<0.04. Pd and Cu dispersed highly in reduced PdxCu0.4/Mg5.6−xAl2O8.6−x and Pd improved the reduction of Cu. Hydrogenolysis of glycerol proceeded easily on bimetallic Pd-Cu/solid-base catalysts than separated Pd and Cu. On Pd0.04Cu0.4/Mg5.56Al2O8.56, the conversion of glycerol and selectivity of 1,2-PDO reached 88.0 and 99.6%, respectively, at 2.0MPa H2, 180°C, 10h in ethanol solution. And this catalyst is stable in five recycles. It was concluded that H2-spillover from Pd to Cu increased the activity of PdxCu0.4/Mg5.6−xAl2O8.6−x in hydrogenolysis of glycerol.

Abstract:Biomass glycerol is an important raw material for many available chemicals, such as 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO). Hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO is considered as a sustainable process with renewable potential application. In this paper, a series of bimetallic PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 were prepared and the structures of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM and CO2-TPD. By measuring the activity of the catalyst, we found that PdCu-KF/γ-Al2O3 (Pd:Cu:KF=0.05:1:0.5) can be used as an efficient catalyst for hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,2-PDO, with 98.3% selectivity and nearly 100% conversion (200°C, 2.5MPa initial H2 pressure, 20h).
Unraveling the Active States of WO3-based Catalysts in the Selective Conversion of Cellulose to Glycols

Abstract:Tungsten-based catalysts, including crystalline WO3 and H2WO4, have been reported to be efficient for the selective cleavage of C−C bonds of sugar intermediates involved in the conversion of cellulose to ethylene glycol and propylene glycol in combination with hydrogenation catalysts under H2 atmosphere. However, there is still not a consensus on the actual states of these catalysts during the reaction. Herein, we demonstrate that both WO3 and H2WO4 tended to undergo reduction to hydrogen tungsten bronze (HxWO3) species in the cellulose reaction, consisting of H0.23WO3 and H0.33WO3, which were then re-oxidized to WO3 upon exposure to ambient air after the reaction. Both WO3 and HxWO3 were insoluble in water and acted as the heterogeneous catalysts in the cellulose reaction, as further validated by the strong dependence of the catalytic activity of WO3 on its crystallite size and surface area. Such identification of the heterogeneous HxWO3 species, albeit exemplified here only from the in situ reduction of WO3 and H2WO4 in the cellulose reaction, unravels the active state of the tungsten-based catalysts under reductive reaction conditions.

Background Developing effective and sustainable catalysts for cellulose hydrolysis is crucial for transforming this abundant biopolymer into renewable chemicals and biofuel. Carbonaceous solid acids are promising catalysts for this reaction due to their low cost, chemical and hydrothermal stability, tunable surface, and high affinity for cellulose. Methods We developed multifunctional carbocatalysts for cellulose hydrolysis by introducing boronic groups and weak acid sites along with high-density sulfonic acid through borylation of mesophase pitch carbon (MPC) followed by sulfonation. The functionalized MPC was characterized using various techniques, including FT-IR, XPS, SS-NMR, Raman spectroscopy, and TGA. Significant findings The results of surface characterization revealed the successful introduction of multifunctional groups on the peripheral surface of MPC. This carbocatalyst can effectively hydrolyze pretreated cellulose into glucose, resulting in a maximum yield of 64 % in water at 180 °C for 3 h. Boronic groups and weak acid sites could mediate the interaction of cellulose molecules with catalyst surface to enhance the catalytic hydrolysis. The apparent activation energy for breaking the glycosidic bonds using the functionalized MPC is 99 kJ/mol, which is lower than the one derived from homogeneous acids. Furthermore, the carbocatalyst is recyclable at least four cycles prior to the significant loss for reactivity. Construction of Pd/BiOCl Catalyst for Highly‐selective Synthesis of Benzoin Ethyl Ether by Chlorine Promoted Coupling Reaction

Abstract:Exploring novel catalyst supports with unique performance creates more opportunity for transforming organic chemicals in heterogeneous catalysis. In this paper, BiOCl is first presented as an effective support for Pd nanoparticles (NPs) toward application in the coupling reaction of benzaldehyde. The Cl- ion dissociates from BiOCl, which forms nucleophile with Pd nanoparticles; this is key for the one-step synthesis of benzoin ethyl ether, the conversion and selectivity of which can reach to 100 % and 97.9 % at 100 degrees C, respectively. DFT calculations reveal that Cl- ions can be stabilized by stronger Bi-Cl bonds through doping of Fe ions in substituting Bi sites in BiOCl. The parallel catalytic evaluation using Pd/Fe-doped BiOCl catalyst shows the suppression of coupling reaction, conversely, demonstrating the crucial role of nucleophile. This work provides new insights into support tailoring for the synthesis of vital organic chemicals in heterogeneous catalysis by changing chemical reaction pathway.

Abstract:The selective conversion of cellulose to gluconic acid under mild conditions is challenging as it has abundant intra‐and inter‐molecular hydrogen bonds that protect the β‐1,4‐glycosidic bonds and make it intrinsically recalcitrant to depolymerize. Au‐Pd/TiO2 and Au‐Pt/TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol immobilization method without pre‐treatment are active and selective for the oxidation of glucose and cellobiose to gluconic acid under base‐free conditions. Important preparation parameters are the pre‐treatment of the catalyst and the metal ratio. The optimized catalyst provided a good yield of gluconic acid from cellobiose and has opened up a new catalyst system for cellobiose conversion in terms of a heterogeneous catalyst. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

Hydroxyl Radicals-Mediated Oxidative Cleavage of the Glycosidic Bond in Cellobiose by Copper Catalysts and Its Application to Low-Temperature Depolymerization of Cellulose

Abstract:As the most abundant source of biomass in nature for sustainable production of fuels and chemicals, efficient depolymerization of cellulose under mild conditions, due to the difficulty in selective cleavage of its beta-1,4-glycosidic bonds, still remains challenging. Here, we report a novel method for oxidative cleavage of the glycosidic bonds by free radicals. Probed by the cellobiose reaction, it was found that center dot OH radicals, generated from the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by CuSO4 or CuO/SiO2, were efficient for selective conversion of cellobiose to glucose and gluconic acid at a low temperature of 333 K, and their selectivities reached 30.0% and 34.6%, respectively, at 23.4% cellobiose conversion. Other radicals, such as center dot SO4-, also exhibited high efficacy in the cellobiose reaction. Mechanistic studies suggest that the oxidative cleavage of the beta-1,4-glycosidic bond by the free radicals involve formation of the carbon radical intermediate via abstraction of the H atom dominantly at the Cl position. Following this oxidative mechanism, treatment of microcrystalline cellulose with center dot OH by impregnation with H2O2 and CuSO4 catalyst at 343 K led to significant enhancement in its hydrolysis efficiency. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of this new method in the oxidative cleavage of glycosidic bonds, and its viability for the efficient depolymerization of cellulose at low temperatures, which can be further improved, for example, by exploring new free radicals and optimizing their reactivity and selectivity. Abstract:A highly efficient coupling of glycosyl stannanes and sulfonium salts enabled by synergistic Pd/Cu catalysis is disclosed, facilitating the construction of C-aryl/alkenyl glycals under mild conditions in high yields. The protocol tolerates a wide scope of functional groups including ketone, cyano, ester, amide, nitro, halide. The one-pot formal CH glycosylation starting from arene is demonstrated with a reaction sequence of dibenzothiophenylation/Stille coupling. Besides, a gram-scale reaction is performed successfully, showing the high applicability of this protocol.

Abstract:Mononuclear Pd(ii) complexes with two leaving groups are able to promote His-, Cys- and Met-orientated peptide hydrolysis, and exploring the peptide cleavage behavior of a novel Pd(ii) complex may provide "Omics" studies a promising artificial protease. In this study, a novel binuclear Pd(ii) complex [Pd2(μ-O-L-H)(μ-Cl)](ClO4)2 (L = 2,6-bis(N-2'-aminoethylaminomethyl)-p-cresol) was constructed to promote peptide hydrolysis. Although each Pd(ii) center has only one leaving group (Cl) in this complex, electrophoresis and LC-MS-MS determination discloses that this complex enables myoglobin cleavage on the second upstream peptide bond from His and Met. A study on peptide cleavage also confirms the His- and Met-orientated peptide hydrolysis, yet no Cys-orientated hydrolysis was observed, although the cysteine-induced peptide/complex binding is distinct. Cysteine in the peptide even prevents the complex from promoting His-orientated hydrolysis, whereas the oxidized cysteine residue recovers the His-orientated hydrolysis. This peptide cleavage behavior is quite different from the simultaneous His-, Cys-, and Met-orientated hydrolysis promoted by the mononuclear Pd(ii) complexes. A theoretical study suggests that the two Pd(ii) centers of this complex might promote His- and Met-orientated hydrolysis in a synergic manner: one Pd(ii) center binds selectively on peptides or proteins and the other coordinates with the amide bond and water favoring nucleophilic attack on the peptide bond. The thiol group of cysteine is inclined to bridge the two Pd(ii) centers to form a "closed" sulphur-bridged structure, disfavoring the Cys-orientated hydrolysis. This study not only demonstrates the peptide cleavage behavior of this binuclear Pd(ii) complex, but also provides a polynuclear strategy to regulate the peptide cleavage behavior of Pd(ii) complexes.

Abstract:Abstract The selective oxidation of glycerol to glyceric acid, an important value-added reaction from polyols, is a typical cascade catalytic process. It is still of great challenge to simultaneously achieve high glycerol activity and glyceric acid selectivity, suffering from either deep oxidation and C-C cleavage or poor oxidation efficiency from glyceraldehyde to glyceric acid. Herein, this work, inspired by nature, proposes a cascade synergistic catalysis strategy by atomic and low-coordinated cluster Pt on well-defined Cu-CuZrO x , which involves enhanced C-H activation on atomic Pt 1 and O-H activation on cluster Pt n in the oxidation of glycerol to glyceraldehyde, and cluster Pt n for C=O activation followed by O-H insertion and atomic Pt 1 for C-H activation in the tandem oxidation of glyceraldehyde to glyceric acid. The enhanced C-H activation in the cascade process by atomic Pt 1 is revealed to be essential for the high glycerol activity (90.0±0.1%) and the glyceric acid selectivity (80.2±0.2%).
