Abstract:CO 2 was found to serve as an efficient and clean catalyst (0.5 MPa) for the first time in N -formylation of aliphatic amines with DMF for production of formamides in the high yields. The DMF- d 7 isotope labeling experiment indicated that the N -formyl group in the target product was originated from DMF rather than CO 2 which confirmed that CO 2 truly served as a catalyst. It was also found that the formation of carbamate salt intermediate A derived from the reaction of CO 2 with the cyclohexylamine as a catalyst-substrate adduct was the driving force for this reaction, confirmed by the control experiments and the in situ high-pressure FT-IR spectroscopic analysis. Accordingly, the reaction mechanism over CO 2 -catalyst was proposed, involving the critical formation of carbamate salt intermediate with enhanced nucleophilicity in favor of the attack on carbonyl-group of DMF.
