Abstract:The techniques of site-directed and in-situ dating should meet two requirements.It must accurately give age value and endow with definite geological meaning. The first one can be resolved by development of modern apparatus and testing methods.While the second drives people to attach importance to the study of crystal chemistry of minerals. This paper suggests the developing possibility of chemical dating technique of EPMA and/or μ-PIXE with high spatial resolution and the non-destructive character by comparison with all other microprobe techniques, and elucidates the methods of crystal chemical study of minerals and their important function for site-directed and in-situ dating on a micrometer-scale. Then it presents an example of implication for microbeam analytical results of apparent ages and crystal chemical features of zircon from Huangtuling granulite in North Dabie Mountains.It shows that zircon is of polygenetic due to complex geological events, and the granulite-facies metamorphism was reliably confirmed at 2.050 Ga.
A Non-Matrix-Matched Calibration Method for In Situ Major and Trace Element Analysis of Scheelite by Nanosecond LA-ICP-MS

Abstract:In this work, a reliable and robust in situ non-matrix-matched calibration method is proposed for element composition determination in scheelite samples. With external calibration against the silicate glass standard reference material NIST SRM 610, the concentrations of both major elements (Ca and W) and trace elements (Si, Fe, Mo, Y, rare earth elements, etc.) in scheelite are determined using an ArF 193 nm excimer nanosecond laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS). Here, the ablation was performed by hole drilling under a helium (He) environment using a laser spot size of 35 μm and a laser repetition of 5 Hz, and the aerosols were then transported to a quadrupole ICP-MS by a mixture of He and make-up gas argon (Ar) with a total gas flow rate of 1.6 L/min. Results showed that there was no apparent matrix effect between the NIST SRM 610 and scheelite by this proposed method. With internal standardization against W, the obtained concentrations of CaO and WO3 were found to yield an average matrix CaO/WO3 mass fraction ratio of 0.245 (2σ = 0.003, n = 19), which agreed well with the value of 0.243 (2σ = 0.002, n = 15) from electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Furthermore, the accuracy of trace element analyses with this proposed non-matrix-matched calibration in situ method was evaluated by comparing the concentration results with those from bulk analysis by solution nebulizer ICP-MS (SN-ICP-MS). It was found that the quantification results from LA-ICP-MS and SN-ICP-MS were comparable, in particular showing a relative concentration bias of the total ∑REE+Y contents of less than 2%. This confirmed that scheelites can be accurately analyzed in situ by LA-ICP-MS without matrix-matched calibration standards. By using this developed in situ method, the element compositions in a series of scheelite samples from different W-associated deposits in China were successfully quantified, promising further genetic process investigation and associated geologic activities of the polymetallic resources.

Abstract:U−Pb geochronology of calcite using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is an emerging method, with potential applications to a vast array of geological problems. Due to the low levels of U and Pb in calcite, measurement using higher-sensitivity instruments, such as sector field (SF) ICP-MS, have advantages over more commonly used quadrupole (Q) ICP-MS instruments. Using a Thermo Element XR ICP-MS, we demonstrate that the Jet+X cone combination with the N 2 enhancement technique provides the best sensitivity for measuring U and Pb isotopes. This higher sensitivity improves the precision of calcite U−Pb isotope measurements, and permits dating at high spatial resolutions (<110 μm) and for samples containing low contents of 238 U (<1 μg g −1 ) and/or 207 Pb (i.e., young samples <10 Ma). Using a spot size of 85 μm with a low fluence (∼2.0 J cm −2 ), the laser-induced elemental fractionation of 206 Pb/ 238 U in the NIST SRM 614, ARM-3 and WC-1 reference materials are insignificant (<2.2%). Adopting the optimized instrument parameters, we analysed four commonly-used calcite U−Pb reference materials (WC-1, Duff Brown Tank, JT, and ASH-15). The results match well with published isotope dilution data, demonstrating the reliability of our technique. ARM-3, an andesitic glass, is shown to be an appropriate reference material for both 207 Pb/ 206 Pb calibration and instrument optimization because of its moderate contents of U (∼3.75 μg g −1 ) and Pb (∼12.7 μg g −1 ). We further demonstrate that the image-guided approach using LA-ICP-MS elemental mapping is an efficient tool in obtaining robust ages.

Abstract:Determining the precise timing of mineralization and mineralizing events is crucial to understanding regional mineralizing and other geological events and processes. However, there are a number of mineralogical and analytical limitations to the approaches developed for the absolute dating of mineralizing systems, such as molybdenite Re–Os and zircon and garnet U–Pb, among others. This means that the precise and accurate dating of mineralizing systems that may not contain minerals suitable for dating using existing approaches requires the development of new (and ideally in situ) approaches to absolute dating. This study outlines a new in situ analytical approach that has the potential to rapidly and accurately evaluate the timing of ore formation. Our study employs a novel application of in situ scheelite U–Pb dating analysis using laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–ICP–MS) and samples from the Qiaomaishan deposit, a representative example of skarn mineralization within the Xuancheng ore district of eastern China. Our approach to scheelite dating of the deposit is verified by cross-comparison to dating of cogenetic garnet and apatite, proving the effectiveness of this approach. Our new approach to dating of scheelite-bearing geological systems is rapid, cheap, requires little sample preparation, and is undertaken in situ, allowing crucial geological and mineralogical context to be retained during analysis. The approaches outlined here not only allow the determination of the absolute timing of formation of the Qiaomaishan deposit through the U–Pb dating of scheelite [138.6 ± 3.2 Ma, N = 39, mean square weighted deviation (MSWD) = 1.17], garnet (138.4 ± 1.0 Ma, N = 40, MSWD = 1.3), and apatite (139.6 ± 3.3 Ma, N = 35, MSWD = 0.72), but also further supports the theoretical genetic links between this mineralization and the emplacement of a proximal porphyritic granodiorite intrusion (zircon U–Pb age: 139.5 ± 1.2 Ma, N = 23, MSWD = 0.3). Moreover, our research indicates that the higher the concentrations of U within scheelite, the more suitable that scheelite is for U–Pb dating, with the main factor controlling the U content of scheelite seemingly being variations in oxygen fugacity conditions. This novel approach provides a potentially powerful tool, not just for the dating of skarn systems but also with potential applications in orogenic and intrusion-related gold, porphyry W–Mo, and greisen mineralizing systems as well as other scheelite-bearing geological bodies or geological systems.

Abstract:In this study, we present a novel laser-based technique for in situ U–Pb, (U–Th)/He, and fission track (FT) triple dating for apatite and other U-rich accessory minerals. This approach allows for obtaining three ages with different closure temperatures on a single crystal, significantly enhancing spatial resolution and analytical productivity. Our new workflow employs an Autoscan System for FT analysis, a ResoChron system for He determination, and an LA-ICP-MS system for parent isotope and U–Pb age measurements. We describe the sample preparation, instrument parameters, and data reduction for apatite in detail. Using a sample–standard bracketing approach to determine the pairwise factor κ , we significantly improved reproducibility, particularly by replacing volume with depth in helium pit measurement. Additionally, we found that chemical etching in FT dating can reduce (U–Th)/He age by removing the surrounding He, necessitating a second polishing for samples with high track density. This in situ triple dating method has been successfully applied to five large apatite crystals, improving analytical efficiency and resolving grain-to-grain age discrepancy.

In Situ U-Pb Dating of Xenotime by Laser Ablation (La)-Icp-ms

Abstract:Xenotime is an ideal mineral for U-Th-Pb isotopic dating because of its relatively high U and Th contents, but typically low concentration of common Pb. These characteristics, and the fact that it is widespread throughout various types of rocks, suggest that the U-Th-Pb dating of xenotime has broad applications. Studies of U-Pb dating on xenotime by ion microprobe (such as SHRIMP) have increased in recent years, whereas studies by laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS are still rare. In this study, we developed a technique for U-Pb dating of xenotime using the 193 nm ArF laser-ablation system and Agilent 7500a Q-ICP-MS. To evaluate the reliability of our method, a xenotime standard, BS-1, was analyzed and calibrated against another xenotime standard, MG-1. The weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 510.1 ± 5.2 Ma (2 σ, n = 21), 509.8 ± 4.3 Ma (2 σ, n = 21) and 510.0 ± 4.6 Ma (2 σ, n = 21) were obtained using beam diameters of 16, 24 and 32 μm, respectively. These ages are identical to those determined by ID-TIMS method (weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 508.8 ± 1.4 Ma), which supports the reliability of our LA-ICP-MS method. We also analyzed xenotimes in leucogranites from South Tibet and granites from Xihuashan in southern China, and obtained accurate and precise ages. Nevertheless, we observed systematic differences in Pb/U fractionation among xenotime, monazite and zircon. The matrix-effect resulted in either under-correction or over-correction of fractionation, and thus led to inaccurate ages. Thus, a matrix-matched material is required for U-Pb dating of xenotime by LA-ICP-MS.

Abstract:In situ small-spot U-Pb geochronology is essential for measuring zircon crystals containing micrometre-scale heterogeneities, abundant inclusions, inevitable cracks and narrow growth zones, all of which are especially common in metamorphic zircons. We present a high spatial resolution (<= 10 mu m diameter) laser ablation-multi-collector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) U-Pb dating method using a Nu Plasma II mass spectrometer coupled with a GeoLas HD laser ablation system, which is capable of analysing zircon crystals with a wide range of U contents through two analytical modes (mixed-mode for 10 mu m ablation and IC-mode for 5 mu m ablation). We examined Pb/U down-hole fractionation (DHF) as a function of different laser settings under small-spot ablation, and how it controls the accuracy and precision of U-Pb ages of zircon reference materials. After DHF correction using Iolite software (version 3.71), five measurement sessions (with different laser fluence and/or laser pulse settings) for the two analytical modes yielded accurate and precise U-Pb ages for four zircon reference materials (Plesovice, 91500, GJ-1 and Temora-2). Further determinations of U-Pb ages of three metamorphic zircon samples (similar to 14 to 2000 Ma) from the Himalaya, North China Craton and North Qaidam were conducted, the results of which confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of this small-spot ablation method for natural zircons with multiple growth zones.

Abstract:Calcite is widely formed in various geological environments such as diagenesis, biological processes and hydrothermal processes. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) calcite U-Pb dating technique has a broad application prospect in solving key geological problems. Calcite has relatively low U content (5.0x10(-6)) and high common lead proportion (U-238/Pb-206 < 1), which requires high sensitivity of the instrument. Compared with Q-ICP-MS and SF-ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS has the advantage of simultaneous isotope determination and higher analysis accuracy. Predecessors optimized instrument parameters and made some attempts to improve sensitivity. To maximize sensitivity, based on Neptune Plus model MC-ICP-MS, this study gets the best sensitivity of U and Pb by optimizing cone and auxiliary nitrogen systematically. The research shows that the instrument has the highest sensitivity under the condition of Jet+X cone combined with nitrogen (N-2=4.0mL.min(-1)). Compared with the conventional condition (S+H cone combined without nitrogen), the signal intensities of U and Pb are increased by about 4 times and 3 times respectively. At the same time, we find that the nitrogen sensitization has a great relationship with the cone combination. When X sample cone is used, the introduction of nitrogen can improve the signal intensity of U, while when H sample cone is used, the introduction of nitrogen does not change the signal intensity. Based on the optimized instrument parameters, we established a high spatial resolution (similar to 85 mu m) LA-MC-ICP-MS calcite U-Pb dating technique. Three calcite U-Pb dating reference materials are used to verify our technique, and the results are consistence with ID-TIMS value within error, which proves that our method is effective for the analysis of low U (similar to 0.03x10(-6)) sample. Two reference materials in the laboratory are preliminary determined: TLM and LSJ07. The results of one measurement of TLM are 219.8 +/- 2.3Ma (2s, n=30), and the results of two measurements of LSJ07 are 26.4 +/- 0.2 Ma (2s, n=30) and 26.7 +/- 0.2Ma (2s, n=30). The proportion of common lead in these two reference materials is relatively low, and they are potential calcite U-Pb dating reference materials. We find that the change of laser spot size significantly affected the accuracy of the results, which may be related to the difference of fractionation effect under different laser spots, especially when the laser spot is smaller than 60 mu m. Therefore, we suggest that the laser parameters should be strictly matched between the reference materials and the unknown samples in the U-Pb dating of calcite. Finally, we preliminarily discussed the closure of calcite U-Pb system.
Precise ID-TIMS U-Pb Dating of Single Zircons Using 265Pb-233U-236u Tracers : Isobaric Oxide Corrections for UO2+ with In-Run Measured 18O/16O

Abstract:Due to the interferences of U-236(16) O-18 O+ and U-236 O-18 O+ on U-236(18) O-16 O-2(+), a Pb-205-(233) U-(235) U spike rather than a Pb-205-(233) U-(236) U spike is usually used for the single grain zircon CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb dating worldwide. In order to use the Pb-205-(233) U-(236) spike for correcting the U isotope fractionation effect by the 233U 236U double spike, in this study, the impact of isobaric interferences of U-236(16) O-18 O+ and (UO16)-U-236-O-18 O+ on U-236(18) O-16 O-2(+) for the TIMS U isotope analysis is thoroughly addressed. We found that it is critical to ensure the sample is not over-spiked using the Pb-205-U-233-(236) U spike by controlling the amount of the spike to be added into the sample during the CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb analysis. Actually, when the U-238/U-236 ratio in the sample -spike mixture is not <0.5, the effect of the interferences of U-236(16) O-18 O+ and U-236(18) O-16 O+ on U-238(16) -2 on the final U-Pb dating result is not significant. In addition, the importance of the correct setting of the dead -time of SEM ( secondary electron multiplier) for the U and Pb isotope analyses for the CAID-TIMS U-Pb dating has also been fully addressed. Accordingly, a high precision CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb geochronology method for single zircons using Pb-205-U-233-(236) U tracers with in -run measured O-18/O-16 for UO2+ isobaric oxide corrections has been developed. Finally, a standard zircon-ZS was analyzed using the method, yielding a weighted mean Pb-206/(238) U age of 559. 91 0. 25Ma (2 sigma o-, analytical error), which is consistent with the previously reported date within analytical error. Due to the use of U-233-U-236 double spike for internal correction of U isotope fractionation effect, the analytical precision for this standard zircon is better than 0. 05% (2RSE), which is significantly better than that obtained by using the single Pb-205-U-235 tracer.

Abstract:Rutile U-Pb dating by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has received increasing attention in geological applications. Previous natural rutile reference materials are insufficient to meet the growing demand of working standards for laser U/Pb dating. In present study, we have developed a new calibration strategy for LA-ICP-MS rutile dating using the most popular zircon as reference material. The matrix-dependent elemental fractionation of rutile and zircon could effectively decrease to a better level by optimized analytical parameters and with large ablation spot size (44-90 mu m). The acceptable Pb/U correction coefficient between rutile and zircon could be obtained while the diameter/depth ratio of the crater is above 1 after assessing elemental fractionation of different ablation size. Five rutile were analyzed by zircon calibration, and their ages show strong agreement with those obtained by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) or thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) analysis, with both precision and accuracy within +/- 2%. Two rutiles of eclogitic rocks from the Dabie orogen yield the ages of 207.0 +/- 2.1 Ma and 205.6 +/- 2.4 Ma, respectively. Both ages are conceivably younger than that previously reported rutile ages (218 Ma) for eclogites. The quite different U-Pb ages of rutile from different localities most likely indicate the different exhumation history of the subducted continental crust. LA-ICP-MS rutile U-Pb dating using zircon as an external calibration reference material would assuage rutile reference material insufficient supply and improve its widespread application.

Abstract:Simultaneously in-situ analysis for more than 25 trace elements and U-Pb and Pb-Pb ages in single zircons using the LAM-ICPMS technique was successfully achieved. The precision and accuracy of analysis are 5-15% for most trace elements, 1-3% for 207Pb/206Pb isotopic ratios, and 2-8% for 206Pb/238U ratios. This combined geochemical and geochronological investigation has significant implications to studying zircons with complicated geological histories.
High Precision In-Situ Pb Isotopic Analysis of Sulfide Minerals by Femtosecond Laser Ablation Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:An in-situ microanalysis of Pb isotopic compositions in sulfide minerals is carried out by using femtosecond laser-ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(fs LA-MC-ICP-MS).High-temperature-activated carbon was used to filter Hg contained in the carrier gas,which reduced the Hg background signal by 48%and also lowered the detection limit of the analysis.Fractionation and mass discrimination effects existing in the ICP-MS analytical processes were corrected using an internal reference Tl in conjunction with an external reference NIST SRM 610.The proposed method was used to analyze the Pb isotopic compositions of chalcopyrite,pyrite,and sphalerite from the Dulong Sn-Zn-In polymetallic ore district.The results showed that in this ore district,the sulfide minerals and different grains of the same sulfide mineral show a large variation in Pb content up to 1000-fold.The studied pyrites show relatively higher Pb contents and homogeneous Pb isotopic compositions,whereas the sphalerites have low Pb contents but most variable Pb isotopic compositions.It is suggested that the large variation of Pb isotopic composition may reflect a late hydrothermal superimposition on the primary sulfide formation.In addition,radiogenic Pb accumulated by radioactive decay of trace amounts of U over time in the host minerals may also be one of the causes for the large variation range of Pb content and Pb isotopic composition of those low-Pb sphalerites.Chalcopyrite and sphalerite grains with Pb content greater than 10 ppm presented a consistent Pb isotopic distribution,whereas all the sulfide grains with Pb content greater than 100 ppm had consistent Pb isotopic composition within 2s measurement uncertainties.The in-situ analysis of Pb isotopic composition agreed well with the results obtained by conventional chemical methods within2s measurement uncertainties,indicating that the data obtained by fs LA-MC-ICP-MS are reliable.Additionally,this study indicates that the Pb isotopic composition could truthfully record the source of ore-forming minerals only for sulfide minerals with high Pb content.On the contrary,the Pb isotopic composition of low-Pb sulfide minerals may be affected by trace amounts of U in the host minerals that may lead to a highly radiogenic Pb isotope ratio.Alternatively,it is also possible that late fluid metasomatic overprinting may alter the Pb isotopic compositions.

Abstract:Mineralization ages of many mineral deposit types (such as orogenic Au, stratabound Cu, and Mississippi Val-ley-type Pb-Zn deposits) are still difficult to date by the traditional isotopic chronometry because of the lack of suitable minerals. We have made efforts to establish a widely suitable dating technique to determine ore forma-tion ages using a high-precision 40Ar/39Ar method on ubiquitously present fluid inclusions in quartz, sphalerite, and other nonpotassium minerals from hydrothermal deposits. The Xitian W-Sn polymetallic deposit in central South China contains several minerals suitable for isotopic dating for interchronometer comparison. 40Ar/39Ar laser step heating of 16 micas from ore veins, greisen, and metallogenic granites yields flat age spectra and thus well-defined ore formation ages ranging from 152.4 +/- 1.5 (2 sigma) to 148.1 +/- 1.4 Ma with an average of 150.2 +/- 0.6 Ma. 40Ar/39Ar progressive crushing of nine quartz samples produces well-defined isochron lines for their primary fluid inclusions corresponding to isochron ages of 153.7-149.9 Ma with an average of 151.6 +/- 0.6 Ma. Cassiterites from three hand specimens have weighted mean Pb-206/U-238 ages of 151.5 +/- 1.7 (2 sigma), 149.7 +/- 2.1, and 151.7 +/- 2.1 Ma. All these new geochronological dates and previous molybdenite Re-Os ages yield well-constrained mineralization ages of 153-148 Ma for the Xitian W-Sn polymetallic deposit, which also confirms conclusively that the quartz 40Ar/39Ar progressive crushing technique is a feasible, valid dating technique. Fur-thermore, significant age information on the secondary fluid inclusions is potentially obtained simultaneously by this technique. We expect that this novel dating technique will be widely applied to determine the geologic fluids trapped in minerals during hydrothermal mineralization, hydrocarbon accumulation, metamorphism, tectonic activities, and other geologic processes.
U-Th-Pb Dating of Garnet Based on LA-ICP-MS Mapping Technology:A Case Study of the Tonglvshan Large-Scale Cu-Fe-Au Skarn Deposit

Abstract:The chronological information of skarn deposits is of great significance to the study of the genesis, evolution, metallogenic regularity and prospecting of skarn deposits. Garnet is a common mineral in skarn deposits, and is characterized by high U, however, its high common lead and uneven U distribution make it difficult to obtain ages for Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) spot analysis. In order to solve the problems and difficulties of downhole fraction correction and ablation analysis spots selection, we propose a virtual spot construction technique using LA-ICP-MS mapping analysis data to implement common lead correction in Tera-Wasserburg ( TW) diagrams to determine the age of common lead -bearing garnets. Through theoretical derivation, numerical simulation and experimental analysis, this paper finds that the corrected Pb-208(0)/U-238 index which is generated by (208)ph Th-232 U-238 associated measurement data can be used to group and resample data in Tera-Wasserburg ( TW) diagram and convert mapping data into virtual spot data, which is similar to the LA-ICP-MS spot analysis data, but with a better radial mother-to -child ratio. This approach is used to analyze the garnet from Tonglvshan Cu -Fe -Au skarn deposit, the Middle and Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt. Trace element mapping and isotopic ratio virtual points were obtained simultaneously after the fifteen minutes mapping experiment, and the age obtained was 139.2 +/- 2. 9Ma with MSWD = 0. 7 ( n = 126), which is consistent with the results of previous studies and proves the feasibility of this approach. The use of LA-ICP-MS mapping dating technique not only enables the acquisition of two-dimensional distribution maps of sample elemental contents, which facilitates the selection of sample periods and the elimination of abnormal data such as inclusions; but also avoids the need for depth fractionation and complex point selection processes, as well as secondary analysis steps involved in spot analysis. By obtaining the distribution of sample elemental contents, it simultaneously provides mineral ages, offering a more convenient method for studying key metals related to skarn-type deposits.

Abstract:Accurately determining the age of hydrothermal ore deposits is difficult, because of lack of suitable mineral chronometers and techniques. Here we present the first LA-MC-ICPMS U-Pb age of carbonates from hydrothermal Sb deposits. Three stages of hydrothermal carbonates from the giant South China Sb metallogenic belt were identified: (1) pre-ore dolomite (Dol-I), (2) syn-ore calcite (Cal-II), and (3) post-ore calcite (Cal-III). The U and Pb isotopic data show that Cal-II yielded a lower intercept age of 115.3 ± 1.5 Ma (MSWD = 2.0), suggesting a Sb mineralization that corresponds to an extension event occurred during the early Cretaceous in South China. Although Cal-III yielded an age of 60.0 ± 0.9 Ma (MSWD = 1.5), indicating a potential tectonothermal event occurred in this belt during the early Cenozoic. Hence, in situ U-Pb dating of calcite offers a new way to determine the age of hydrothermal ore deposits.

Abstract:Columbite-tantalite LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating is a fast and useful method to determine the age of rare-metal deposits and fingerprint the provenance of columbite-tantalite ore concentrates. Accurate LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating requires matrix-matched reference materials. We analysed three columbite-tantalite samples (SN3, HND and RL2) from China using ID-TIMS and LA-ICP-MS to assess their potential as reference materials for in situ U-Pb dating. Coltan 139 and these three columbite-tantalite samples with variable compositions yielded internally consistent LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages when using each other for calibration and the weighted mean Pb-206/U-238 ages are comparable to respective ID-TIMS ages. Composition-dependent U-Pb fractionation seems to be insignificant under the LA-ICP-MS conditions used. Sample SN3 has a low percentage of heterogeneity for Pb-206/U-238 ages (4%) with low common Pb contributions (f(206) < 1%) and shows a good potential in calibrating unknown samples as primary reference material for LA-ICP-MS analysis. Samples RL2 and HND have altered sections characterised by high LREE contents, flat LREE patterns and old Pb-206/U-238 apparent ages, and are not suited as reference materials. The low Pb-207/Pb-206 intercepts for samples RL2 and HND lack geological meaning but provide strong evidence that the disturbed U-Pb systematics with anomalous apparent Pb-206/U-238 ages is a secondary feature.
Precise U Pb dating of grandite garnets by LA-ICP-MS: Assessing ablation behaviors under matrix-matched and non-matrix-matched conditions and applications to various skarn deposits

Abstract:LA-ICP-MS UPb dating of garnet has become one of the important geochronometric methods in recent years. Both the matrix-matched and non-matrix-matched external standards were used for dating. However, under which conditions reliable ages can be obtained and the difference between the matrix-matched and non-matrix-matched methods have not been well constrained. In this contribution, a series of ablation experiments (including spot analysis and line scanning) were conducted on different grandite garnets using various ablation parameters (spot size, repetition rate and fluence) under both the matrix-matched (garnet as external standard) and non-matrix-matched (zircon as external standard) conditions, with the aim to obtain the optimal conditions for precise LA-ICP-MS garnet UPb dating. The results show that UPb fractionation associated with downhole depth, intrinsic properties of U (more refractory) and Pb (more volatile) and radiation damage (alpha dose) of crystal lattice occurs in zircon and garnet. The fractionation can be minimized or even eliminated by optimizing the ablation parameters (e.g., large spot size and low repetition rate) or the analytical modes (e.g., line scanning). This makes it feasible to use zircon as external standard for garnet UPb dating. Line scanning is most favorable for garnet UPb dating at broad ablation parameters regardless of matrix-matched or non-matrix-matched. In spot analysis mode, all the garnets can be precisely dated using a large spot size (e.g., ≥90 μm) coupled with moderate-low repetition rate (e.g., 2–5 J/cm2) and fluence (e.g., 2–5 J/cm2) under matrix-matched condition. Under non-matrix-matched condition, all the garnets can also be precisely dated when a larger spot size (e.g., ≥120 μm) coupled with moderate repetition rate (e.g., 5 Hz) and fluence (e.g., 5 J/cm2) is used. Too high or too low repetition rates (e.g., <2 Hz and > 10 Hz) and fluences (e.g., <2 J/cm2 and > 10 J/cm2) were found to be unsuitable for garnet UPb dating. Low-U and high-U samples are best treated differently due to their different UPb fractionation coefficients, especially at the high fluence and repetition rate conditions. Equally, U-concentration matched garnet standards are required to improve the accuracy and precision of the UPb dating.Natural grandite garnets selected from Fe, W and CuMo skarn deposits can be precisely dated using the optimized methods. These garnets have compositions varying widely between andradite and grossular with variable U (1–100 ppm) and common Pb (f206 of 0–0.7) concentrations, indicating that the methods are reliable and thus suitable for wide applications.

Abstract:Linking geological and biological events requires a robust geochronologic framework, which is especially challenging for poorly fossiliferous Precambrian strata. Although this can be achieved through zircon U-Pb dating, only maximum or minimum ages can typically be obtained, with rare interbedded volcanic ash beds providing precise depositional ages. U-Pb dating of authigenic carbonates could potentially become a more widely applicable geochronometer, but only if carbonate minerals can be dated with sufficient precision. A renaissance in carbonate U-Pb geochronology, utilizing the in situ laser ablation method, has opened new doors in the application of this method to geological problems. Here we apply laser ablation U-Pb dating to carbonate-rich sedimentary strata of likely Meso-Neoproterozoic age on the southeastern margin of the North China Craton, resulting in two meaningful U-Pb ages of 1036 +/- 45 Ma and 1010 +/- 36 Ma (2 sigma), from early diagenetic fine-grained microspar samples. As well as being mutually consistent, these new ages show that precision approaching the limiting uncertainty of the reference material used (similar to 2.5% 2 sigma) can be achieved. Success in this study holds promise for dating other key Precambrian successions.

Abstract:Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is one of the most important analytical tools for geochronology, especially for zircon U-Pb dating. Due to its advantages in spatial resolution and analytical precision, SIMS is the preferred option for multi-spot analyses on single zircon grain with complex structures. However, whether or how much the relative positions of multiple analytical spots on one zircon grain affect the U-Pb age accuracy is an important issue that has been neglected by most researchers. In this study, we carried out a series of investigation on the influence of relative analytical position during zircon U-Pb age analyses, using Cameca IMS 1280-HR instrument. The results demonstrated a significant influence on the second spot, with apparent U-Pb age deviation as high as around 10% especially on the left and right side with overlap in the raster area. Nevertheless, a linear correlation between a secondary ion centering parameter (DTCA-X) and age deviation in percentage terms was found, and a calibration method was established to correct this position effect. Four zircon standards (91500, M257, TEMORA-2, and Plešovice) were measured to prove the reliability of the established procedure. The original U-Pb apparent data show inconsistent deviation on four directions relative to the datum, while the final U-Pb age results is calibrated to be consistent with their recommended values, within uncertainties of ~1%. This work calls for re-examination for the previous SIMS U-Pb dating results on core-rim dating strategy, and provides a calibration protocol to correct the relative position effect.
