Abstract:Surface plasma wave (SPW) will significantly affect the subsequent mutual coupling between laser and plasma, so there are many important applications such as particle acceleration driven by laser pulses and transmission enhancement. In this work, the properties of the SPW produced by an ultra-short and ultra-intensity laser pulse incident on a double-layer plasma target are studied by using the all-electromagnetic large-scale two-dimensional particle in cell (PIC) simulations. It is shown that the high-intensity laser incident with a large angle, θ =75°, can drive the electrons of the low-density layer to form a transportable periodic structure with the propagation speed close to light speed, and excite electrostatic wave whose wavelength is similar to that of the incident laser and is numerically close to the theoretical result according to previous theory. In order to excite the SPW, the laser intensity needs to reach a certain threshold. Besides, the ratio of the surface wave intensity to the incident laser intensity in the double-layer target case obviously deviates from the theoretical result of the single-layer target case, showing a nonlinear relationship. In the second part of the simulation, it is found that the SPW can significantly enhance the transmission of subsequent laser pulse, allowing the subsequent laser to break through the "black barrier" due to the dense plasma. A pre-laser irradiates the double-layer plasma target at θ = 75°, and then the subsequent laser is normally incident after a delay of Δt = 23T. As a result, an obvious electromagnetic wave with the same direction as the sub-laser can be observed behind the target, which indicates that the sub-laser absolutely transmits the dense plasma. In comparison, when a single laser is normally incident on the target without pre-laser while other conditions keep unchanged, no obvious wave can be distinguished behind the target, that is, the field is nearly zero. Another simulation where a single-layer target is injected by pre-laser and sub-laser in order but the wave behind the target is also unobservable, proves that it is SPW that plays the main role in transmission enhancement instead of accelerated hot electrons on the target which can also transport the laser energy.

Interactive Dynamics of Two Copropagating Laser Beams in Underdense Plasmas.

Abstract:The interaction of two copropagating laser beams with crossed polarization in the underdense plasmas has been investigated analytically with the variational approach and numerically. The coupled envelope equations of the two beams include both the relativistic mass correction and the ponderomotive force effect. It is found that the relativistic effect always plays the role of beam attraction, while the ponderomotive force can play both the beam attraction and beam repulsion, depending upon the beam diameters and their transverse separation. In certain conditions, the two beam centers oscillate transversely around a propagation axis. In this case, the ponderomotive effect can lead to a higher oscillation frequency than that accounting for the relativistic effect only. The interaction of two beams decreases the threshold power for self-focusing of the single beam. A strong self-trapping beam can channel a weak one.
Excitation of monochromatic and stable electron acoustic wave by two counter-propagating laser beams

Abstract:The undamped electron acoustic wave is a newly-observed nonlinear electrostatic plasma wave and has potential applications in ion acceleration, laser amplification and diagnostics due to its unique frequency range. We propose to make the first attempt to excite a monochromatic and stable electron acoustic wave (EAW) by two counter-propagating laser beams. The matching conditions relevant to laser frequencies, plasma density, and electron thermal velocity are derived and the harmonic effects of the EAW are excluded. Single-beam instabilities, including stimulated Raman scattering and stimulated Brillouin scattering, on the excitation process are quantified by an interaction quantity, eta = gamma T-B, where gamma is the growth rate of each instability and T-B is the characteristic time of the undamped EAW. The smaller the interaction quantity, the more successfully the monochromatic and stable EAW can be excited. Using one-dimensional Vlasov-Maxwell simulations, we excite EAW wave trains which are amplitude tunable, have a duration of thousands of laser periods, and are monochromatic and stable, by carefully controlling the parameters under the above conditions.

Abstract:In this present theoretical study, an analytic formalism is developed to investigate the electrostatic lower hybrid wave by counterpropagation of two different profile laser beams in collisional plasma embedded with static magnetic field. As the counterpropagating two laser beams interact with collisional magnetized plasma, it would cause the beat wave having frequency and wave number . The beating of two laser beams produce nonlinear ponderomotive to the plasma electrons. It would have efficient potential to couple the pre-existed electrostatic lower hybrid wave and thus driven beat wave excites the electrostatic lower hybrid. Lower hybrid wave is excited much more as the beating of two different profile laser beams polarized along the electrostatic lower hybrid wave. As the beatings of two laser beams having finite y-extent, the coupled electrostatic lower hybrid wave also possess effective y-component wave number and a component of group velocity along the static magnetic field. This leads to causes the convective losses. The spatial shape of power profile of electrostatic lower hybrid wave promises that it can be much more excited with the variation in laser beam decentered parameter, beam width parameter, Hermite polynomial mode index, laser beam transverse propagation distance, electron-neutral collision frequency and electron cyclotron frequency. One may apply this theory of electrostatic lower hybrid wave excitation in electron heating and laser high harmonic generation process.

Abstract:A scheme for beat wave excitation of electron plasma wave (EPW) is proposed by relativistic cross-focusing of two coaxial Cosh-Gaussian (ChG) laser beams in an under dense plasma. The plasma wave is generated on account of beating of two coaxial laser beams of frequencies ω1 and ω2. The mechanism for laser produced nonlinearity is assumed to be relativistic nonlinearity in electron mass. Following moment theory approach in Wentzel Kramers Brillouin (W.K.B) approximation, the coupled differential equations governing the evolution of spot size of laser beams with distance of propagation have been derived. The relativistic nonlinearity depends not only on the intensity of first laser beam but also on the intensity of second laser beam. Therefore, propagation dynamics of one laser beam affect that of second beam and hence cross-focusing of the two laser beams takes place. Due to non uniform intensity distribution of pump laser beams, the background electron concentration gets modified. The amplitude of EPW, which depends on the background electron concentration, thus gets nonlinearly coupled with the laser beams. The effects of relativistic electron mass nonlinearity and the cross-focusing of pump beams on excitation of EPW have been incorporated. Numerical simulations have been carried out to investigate the effect of laser as well as plasma parameters on cross-focusing of laser beams and further its effect on power of excited EPW.

Nonlinear evolution of the plasma beatwave: Compressing the laser beatnotes via electromagnetic cascading

Abstract:The near-resonant beatwave excitation of an electron plasma wave (EPW) can be employed for generating the trains of few-femtosecond electromagnetic (EM) pulses in rarefied plasmas. The EPW produces a co-moving index grating that induces a laser phase modulation at the difference frequency. The bandwidth of the phase-modulated laser is proportional to the product of the plasma length, laser wavelength, and amplitude of the electron density perturbation. The laser spectrum is composed of a cascade of red and blue sidebands shifted by integer multiples of the beat frequency. When the beat frequency is lower than the electron plasma frequency, the red-shifted spectral components are advanced in time with respect to the blue-shifted ones near the center of each laser beatnote. The group velocity dispersion of plasma compresses so chirped beatnotes to a few-laser-cycle duration thus creating a train of sharp EM spikes with the beat periodicity. Depending on the plasma and laser parameters, chirping and compression can be implemented either concurrently in the same, or sequentially in different plasmas. Evolution of the laser beatwave end electron density perturbations is described in time and one spatial dimension in a weakly relativistic approximation. Using the compression effect, we demonstrate that the relativistic bi-stability regime of the EPW excitation [G. Shvets, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 195004 (2004)] can be achieved with the initially sub-threshold beatwave pulse.

Three-dimensional instability of two nonlinearly coupled electromagnetic waves in a plasma

Abstract:The three-dimensional instability of two coupled electromagnetic waves in an unmagnetized plasma is investigated theoretically and numerically. In the regime of two-plasmon decay, where one pump wave frequency is approximately twice the electron plasma frequency, we find that the coupled pump waves give rise to enhanced instability with wave vectors between those of the two beams. In the case of ion parametric decay instability, where the pump wave decays into one Langmuir wave and one ion acoustic wave, the instability regions are added with no distinct amplification. Our investigation can be useful in interpreting laser-plasma as well as ionospheric heating experiments.

Abstract:We present a theory for nonlinear, multidimensional plasma waves with phase velocities near the speed of light. It is appropriate for describing plasma waves excited when all electrons are expelled out from a finite region by either the space charge of a short electron beam or the radiation pressure of a short intense laser. It works very well for the first bucket before phase mixing occurs. We separate the plasma response into a cavity or blowout region void of all electrons and a sheath of electrons just beyond the cavity. This simple model permits the derivation of a single equation for the boundary of the cavity. It works particularly well for narrow electron bunches and for short lasers with spot sizes matched to the radius of the cavity. It is also used to describe the structure of both the accelerating and focusing fields in the wake.
Evolution of the autoresonant plasma wave excitation in two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations

Abstract:The generation of an autoresonantly phase-locked high amplitude plasma waves to the chirped beat frequency of two driving lasers is studied in two dimensions using particle-in-cell simulations. The two-dimensional plasma and laser parameters correspond to those that optimized the plasma wave amplitude in one-dimensional simulations. Near the start of autoresonant locking, the two-dimensional simulations appear similar to one-dimensional particle-in-cell results [Luo et al., Phys. Rev. Res. 6, 013338 (2024)] with plasma wave amplitudes above the Rosenbluth-Liu limit. Later, just below wave-breaking, the two-dimensional simulation exhibits a Weibel-like instability and eventually laser beam filamentation. These limit the coherence of the plasma oscillation after the peak plasma wave field is obtained. In spite of the reduction of spatial coherence of the accelerating density structure, the acceleration of self-injected electrons in the case studied remains at $70\%$ to $80\%$ of that observed in one dimension. Other effects such as plasma wave bowing are discussed.

Abstract:Stimulated Raman scattering of an ultra-intense laser pulse in plasmas is studied by perturbatively including the leading order term of the Landau-Lifshitz radiation reaction force in the equation of motion for plasma electrons. In this approximation, radiation reaction force causes phase shift in nonlinear current densities that drive the two Raman sidebands (anti-Stokes and Stokes waves), manifesting itself into the nonlinear mixing of two sidebands. This mixing results in a strong enhancement in the growth of the forward Raman scattering instability.

Abstract:Using a periodic electron beam bunch train to resonantly excite plasma wakefields in the quasi-nonlinear (QNL) regime has distinct advantages over employing a single, higher charge bunch. Resonant excitation in the QNL regime can produce plasma electron blowout using very low emittance beams with a small charge per pulse: the local density perturbation is extremely nonlinear, achieving total rarefaction, yet the resonant response of the plasma electrons at the plasma frequency is preserved. Such a pulse train, with inter-bunch spacing equal to the plasma period, can be produced via inverse free-electron laser bunching. To achieve resonance with a laser wavelength of a few microns, a high plasma density is used, with the attendant possibility of obtaining extremely large wakefield amplitude, near 1 TV/m for FACET-II parameters. In this article, we use particle-in-cell simulations to study the plasma response, the beam modulation evolution, and the instabilities encountered, that arise when using a bunching scheme to resonantly excite waves in a dense plasma.

Abstract:Linear theory of parametric instabilities resulting from N overlapping laser beams with an arbitrary beam configuration and polarization in a homogeneous plasma is presented. A general dispersion relation valid for both N-beam stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is derived. Analytically, we obtain the growth rate for a two-beam system and find the significance of two special geometries by sharing a common decay wave. By virtue of these geometries, the coefficient matrix of the general dispersion relation is decomposable and reducible in dimensions to give relatively simple formulae. Therefore, the most unstable mode is a trade-off among beam number, geometry, and polarization. We have also considered the spatio-temporal evolution of a highly symmetric N-beam shared scattered light (SL) mode, defined by N beams sharing a common scattered wave, and obtained convective gains for SRS and SBS. An estimation shows that both SRS and SBS in a N-beam SL mode may have significant impacts on inertial confinement fusion.
Wavefront Distortion and Compensation for Weakly Relativistic Vortex Beams Propagating in Plasma

Abstract:The propagation of electromagnetic wave in plasma is one of the long-standing concerns in the field of laser plasma, and it is closely related to the researches of radiation source generation, particle acceleration, and inertial confinement fusion. Recently, the proposal of various schemes for generating intense vortex beams has led to an increasing number of researchers focusing on the interaction between intense vortex beams and plasmas, resulting in significant research progress in various areas, such as particle acceleration, high-order harmonic generation, quasi-static self-generated magnetic fields, and parametric instability. Compared with traditional Gaussian beams, vortex beams, featuring their hollow amplitudes and helical phases, can exhibit novel phenomena during propagating through plasma. In this work, we primarily focus on studying the influence of the propagation process on the wave structure of vortex beams before filamentation occurs. The three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that weakly relativistic vortex beams exhibit wavefront distortion during their propagation in plasma. The distortion degree is closely related to the intensity of the electromagnetic wave and the propagation distance for a given plasma density. This phenomenon is theoretically explained by using a phase correction model that considers the relativistic mass correction of electrons. Additionally, we demonstrate that the wavefront distortion can be compensated for and suppressed by appropriately modulating the initial plasma density, as confirmed by three-dimensional particle simulations. The results of decomposing the wavefront into Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode components indicate that the wavefront distortion is primarily caused by high-order p LG modes, and it is independent of other l LG modes. Additionally, we extend the present investigation to the propagation of vortex beams in axially magnetized plasma, where the phase correction model can also effectively explain the occurrence of wavefront distortion. Our work can deepen the understanding of the interaction between plasma and strong vortex beams, and provide some valuable references for designing plasma devices serving as the manipulation of intense vortex beams in future research.

Abstract:Nonlinear characteristics including spatial chaos and patterns associated with relativistically intense laser-plasma interaction are studied theoretically and numerically using a model relativistic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. It is shown that in the phase space irregular homoclinic orbit crossings exist. The latter are verified and investigated numerically. The spatial chaos and complex patterns of the laser wave field can be attributed to the relativistic electron mass variation as well as the ponderomotive-force driven electron-density modulation. The formation of complex patterns results from stochastic partition of energy in the Fourier modes.
Theory of Laser Wakes in Plasma Channels

Abstract:Excitation of accelerating modes in transversely inhomogeneous plasma channels is considered as an initial value problem. Discrete eigenmodes are supported by plasma channels with sharp density gradients. These eigenmodes are collisionlessly damped as the gradients are smoothed. Using collisionless Landau damping as the analogy, the existence and damping of these “quasi-modes” is studied by constructing and analytically continuing the causal Green’s function of wake excitation into the lower half of the complex frequency plane. Electromagnetic nature of the plasma wakes in the channel makes their excitation nonlocal. This results in the algebraic decay of the fields with time due to phase-mixing of plasma oscillations with spatially-varying frequencies. Characteristic decay rate is given by the mixing time τm, which corresponds to the dephasing of two plasma fluid elements separated by the collisionless skin depth. For wide channels analytic expressions for the field evolution are derived. Implications for electron acceleration in plasma channels are discussed.
Harmonics Effect on Ion-Bulk Waves in CH Plasmas

Abstract:The harmonics effect on ion-bulk (IBk) waves has been researched by Vlasov simulation. The condition of excitation of a large-amplitude IBk waves is given to explain the phenomenon of strong short-wavelength electrostatic activity in solar wind. When $k$ is much lower than $k_{lor}/2$ ($k_{lor}$ is the wave number at loss-of-resonance point), the IBk waves will not be excited to a large amplitude, because a large part of energy will be spread to harmonics. The nature of nonlinear IBk waves in the condition of $k<k_{lor}/2$ is undamped Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal-like waves with harmonics superposition. Only when the wave number $k$ of IBk waves satisfies $k_{lor}/2\lesssim k\leq k_{lor}$, can a large-amplitude and mono-frequency IBk wave be excited. These results give a guidance for a novel scattering mechanism related to IBk waves in the field of laser plasma interaction.

Abstract:The direct laser-acceleration mechanism, nonlinear parametric resonance, of relativistic electrons in a linearly polarized laser-produced plasma channel is examined by a self-consistent model including the relativistic laser dispersion in plasmas. Nonlinear parametric resonance can be excited, and the oscillation amplitude of electrons grows exponentially when the betatron frequency of electron motion varies roughly twice the natural frequency of the oscillator. It is shown analytically that the region of parametric resonance is defined by the self-similar parameter nenca0. The width of this region decreases with nenca0, but the energy gain and oscillation amplitude increases. In this regime, the electron transverse momentum grows faster than that in the linear classical resonance regime.

Abstract:The propagation of a laser pulse with a peak intensity 10(19) W/cm(2) through the preformed underdense plasma with the density 0.014n(c) are studied by using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. The longitudinal electron heating is identified and verified, and its major property agrees with the theoretical prediction. The electron distributions in phase space, patterns of the electric fields, profiles of the ion or electron density and other plasma nonlinear phenomena are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Excitation of nonlinear ion acoustic wave (IAW) by an external electric field is demonstrated by Vlasov simulation. The frequency calculated by the dispersion relation with no damping is verified much closer to the resonance frequency of the small-amplitude nonlinear IAW than that calculated by the linear dispersion relation. When the wave number kλ_De increases, the linear Landau damping of the fast mode (its phase velocity is greater than any ion's thermal velocity) increases obviously in the region of T_i/T_e < 0.2 in which the fast mode is weakly damped mode. As a result, the deviation between the frequency calculated by the linear dispersion relation and that by the dispersion relation with no damping becomes larger with kλ_De increasing. When kλ_De is not large, such as kλ_De=0.1, 0.3, 0.5, the nonlinear IAW can be excited by the driver with the linear frequency of the modes.
