Abstract:China will establish a 2-meter space-based astronomical telescope. Its main science goals are performing a sky survey for research about dark matter and dark energy, and high resolution observations. Some experts suggest that this space telescope should be installed inside the Chinese space station. In accord with this suggestion we put forward our first configuration, i.e., to adopt a coud′e system for this telescope.This coud′e system comes from the Chinese 2.16 m telescope’s coud′e system, which includes a relay mirror so that excellent image quality can be obtained. In our second configuration, we suggest that the whole space telescope fly freely as an independent satellite outside the space station. When it needs servicing, for example, changing instruments, refilling refrigerant or propellant, etc., this space telescope can fly near or even dock with the core space station. Although some space stations have had accompanying satellites, the one we propose is a space telescope that will be much larger than other accompanying satellites in terms of weight and volume. On the basis of the second configuration, we also put forward the following idea: the space station can be composed of several large independent modules if necessary.

Abstract:Three telescope projects have been finished or nearly finished here in China, i.e., a 2.16 m telescope has started test observations in an assembly workshop since the beginning of 1987, a 1.56 m telescope has been installed in the dome and has just begun test runs, and a 1.26 m infrared telescope has already been put into observation. In addition, a laser range system, a solar magnetic field telescope and a multi-waveband and fast scanning solar spectrograph have been in routine use. A solar fine-structure telescope and a type III photoelectric astrolabe have started test observations recently. CCD, Reticon and infrared photometer systems have been installed and used for some observations. The work on image processing, adaptive optics, speckle interferometry, fibre optics has been proved successful. New ideas have been proposed and new instruments are being made, which include a configuration of a 3 m multiple Schmidt telescope, multichannel birefringent filter, and a new type of meridian circle. Besides these, some work and researches on large telescopes have been done or are being developed.
Some Thinking on the Development Stratagem of Future Large Facilities in Chinese Astronomy

Abstract:We give a brief review on the recent status and the development of the large astronomical facilities in the world. A brief description of the situation of astronomical devices in China is presented in detail. It is pointed out that the construction of a series of important facilities marks the establishment of the observational base of astronomy in China. The Guoshoujing telescope (LAMOST) and the five-hundred-meter aperture spherical radio telescope (FAST) are good examples. LAMOST is a new type of spectral survey telescope, which was proposed by Chinese astrono- mers with innovation ideas. Its construction implies a breakthrough of the technique for large optical telescopes in China. FAST is now being constructed in Guizhou province. It will be the largest single-dish radio telescope around the world. When it is finished and put into operation, China will come to the forefront of radio astronomical research. This paper also introduces some projects of large astronomical facilities in the future. Some thinking on the develop- ment stratagem of future large facilities in Chinese astronomy is described, and some personal suggestions are provided.

(1) A transit mounting telescope with spherical primary mirror which can be rotated continuously only around the level axis, and a corrector on the prime focus is used to track the objects during they passing through the meridian cycle about 1.5 hours. (2) The mounting is the same as the first one, but to get higher image quality and smaller corrector, we applied the idea, which Su et al put forward in 1986, to actively change the shape of the area in use on the primary mirror during tracking in this telescope. (3) The third one is a fully fixed mounting telescope, but it is composed of several telescopes like the first or the second configuration in parallel along south and north direction. (4) An alt-az mounting telescope with a f/0.6 aspherical primary mirror. There are three important ideas in this paper: (a) transit mounting; (b) primary mirror with continuous variable shape during observation; (c) very fast f ratio telescope with fixed shape aspherical primary mirror. All these configurations can be used in optical, infrared, sub-millimeter and radio telescopes and also can be used on the moon.

Abstract:Except for the spectroscopic survey telescope LAMOST, there are only two 2m class general purpose telescopes for precision observation in China (2.16m in Xinglong and 2.4m in Lijiang). Chinese astronomical community unanimously agrees that a 10m class large diameter general purpose optical/infrared telescope is urgently needed in China for a wide range of scientific research. The configuration for LOT with primary aperture 12m has been selected by Chinese government for the Thirteen-five-years plan in July, 2016. The concept design introduced here has been approved by Chinese astronomical community and Chinese Academy of Sciences in Dec. 2017, and submitted into the formal funding procedure of Chinese government. For quite a long time, China will very likely have only one 10m class telescope, therefore LOT should be a general-purpose telescope including multi-foci. The Nasmyth focus, prime focus, Cassegrain focus and coude focus have been considered or reserved. Also, LOT will closely combine with the development of new technologies, such as AO. GLAO. fiber and instrument related new technologies, to make it has powerful capability for the frontier sciences. The four-mirror Nasmyth system, optimized according to the GLAO requirements, has a f-ratio about 14 and field of view 14 arecmin with excellent image quality. Some off-axis four-mirror Nasmyth optical systems are also presented in this paper. The primary focus system has a f-ratio 2 and 1.5degree field of view with 80% light energy encircled in 0.5 arecsec, which will let LOT complementary with the coming 30m-class telescopes. A double - layer Nasmyth platforms are proposed to accommodate more instruments, such as the wide field imaging spectrograph, broad band medium resolution spectrograph, high resolution spectrograph and multi-object fiber spectrographs and so on. Not all optical systems will be constructed in the same time, which will be in stages depending on the science and funding situation.

Abstract:This is an optical/infrared telescope. It is a general purpose telescope. A segmented primary mirror is adopted with diameter 12 m and f-ratio 1.6. This telescope has prime focus, Cassegrain, Nasmyth and coud´e systems. The prime focus system has a 1.◦5 field-of-view corrector with excellent image quality. It will be used for multi-object fibre spectroscopic observation and CCD photography. In this 12-m telescope, all systems except the prime focus system share the same secondary mirror; the Nasmyth and coud´e systems are formed byadding relay mirrors; and the method of moving a secondary mirror is used to enhance image quality. All these features originate from the innovative optical system of the Chinese 2.16-m telescope. At the Cassegrain focus, a dark object spectrograph, for example, can be installed without any corrector; and in case a field of view is needed, a corrector may be added. Both the Nasmyth and coud´e systems have exceptionally excellent image quality and the exchange between them occurs very conveniently. Many instruments in visible and infrared wavebands, some with an adaptive optics system, will be installed at the Nasmyth platform. Coud´e system will be used for interferometry and for those instruments which require high stability. This configuration has a nearly full range of systems but it is not complex, and it can even be adopted by 20–40-m class telescopes.

Abstract:A new configuration for a 10 m optical/infrared telescope for high-resolution work is proposed. While similar in some respects to the Hobby Eberly 9 m telescope (HET) and the Large Area Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), its characteristics are: a spherical segmented primary made of 91 hexagonal sub-mirrors of size 1.2 m each, (with real-time co-focus, and, for infrared observation only, co-phase), a focal ratio of 1.7, giving a field of 6–8 arc min, a meridian-instrument type of mounting, covering 100° in declination, the primary being fixed during observation, the tracking being done by a 4-component corrector housed in a frame that moves along guides, themselves fixed to the ground. It is a low-cost (about 13–20 million US dollars), low risk configuration, and it can be expected to be also suitable for much larger telescopes of apertures several tens of metres.

Abstract:This telescope has 30m aperture, segmented primary mirror and alt-azimuth mounting. The aspherical primary mirror with f-ratio 1.2 consists of 1122 partial annular submirrors. The optical system includes Nasmyth I and II systems, Cassegrain system, coude system and a wide field of view system. There are four Nasmyth platforms. Two Nasmyth I foci are located on the upper floor and two Nasmyth II foci are located in the lower floor. All Nasmyth I, II and Cassegrain systems use same one secondary mirror, and all are R-C systems. With adaptive optics system, several diffraction-limited observations can be operated simultaneously on Nasmyth II platforms. The wide field of view system has 20 arcmin FOV, can correct atmospheric dispersion and the low space frequency error from primary mirror and atmosphere turbulence. A special rocking chair structure is designed which can realize the horizontal axis on the front of primary mirror. The tolerances of the surface shape and position of submirrors are given. The issues about tip-tilt correction and adaptive optics are discussed. Some formulae on rotating conic surface especially used for segmented mirror are given.
A Configuration for Future Giant Telescope

Abstract:A configuration for the Future Giant Telescope is proposed. It is a 30m telescope with segmented primary mirror and alt-azimuth mounting. The aspherical f/1.2 primary mirror is made up of 1095 partial annular submirrors. The optical system includes a Nasmyth system, a coude system and a wide field system. The Nasmyth system has a novel design with four mirrors and provides a ∼10 arcmin field of diffraction-limited images, a much larger field than can be obtained by the traditional Nasmyth system. Several diffraction-limited observations each over a small field, can be carried out simultaneously. By applying active optics to change the shape, tip, tilt and piston of the submirrors, thereby to effect a new aspherical surface of the primary, excellent quality images can be obtained for the coude system and the wide field system. The wide field system has a field of 25 arcmin, the focal surface is only slightly curved and the atmospheric dispersion could be corrected. The tolerances of the surface shape and position for the submirrors, and the telescope mounting and structure are also discussed. The innovations in this configuration should have a general significance for future giant telescopes.

Abstract:> This paper introduces configuration of the main optical system of China’s 2.16-m telescope and the results of its optical design. There are three foci in this telescope: the Cassegrain, the coude and the prime foci. Ritchey-Chretien (R-C) system is used as the Cassegrain system. The 2-lens and 3-lens correctors are prepared for the Cassegrain and the prime foci respectively. The most significant characteristic of this optical system is that the coude and Cassegrain systems share one secondary mirror. A relay mirror is added to the coude system. When the two systems exchange, the secondary mirror moves slightly, and the coude system obtained is free from both spherical aberration and coma simultaneously. Some other coude configurations and a special configuration for setting the focal reducer are also introduced in this paper.

Abstract:In this configuration the main mirror is made up of a number of elemental component mirrors. It is 12.4 metres long in the east-west direction and 4 metres wide. It can rotate about the east-west axis. Optical fibre is used to make multi-object spectral observation, each object using the light from a 4-metre diameter area of the main mirror. Because we adopted a large focal ratio of 4, the corrector needed for each fibre has a diameter of only 20 mm, so a vast number of correctors and fibres can be installed in the focal plane. The observing room is fixed, with a semicircular shutter in the meridian plane, along which a tracking frame can move. During observation, four 1 m × 1 m plates equipped with optical fibres mounted on four carriages track the stars by means of the tracking frame. The tracking lasts one hour or more and about 2400 objects are simultaneously observed. Such a telescope, when completed, will be the most powerful telescope in the world for spectral survey work, yet the cost of the telescope itself will only be about 25 Million Chinese Yuan. With some modification this configuration can also be used in general astronomical work, including high resolution work.

Abstract:Our article "Optical system for extremely large spectroscopic survey telescope" has been accepted on December 26, 2023, published online on March 7, 2024, and will be published in July 2024 Vol. 67 No. 7: 279511 in Sci. China-Phys. Mech. Astron. In this article, a pure reflecting optical system with a novel strip lensm (lens-prism) atmospheric dispersion corrector (S-ADC) is used, breaking through the glass material size limit of the lens atmospheric dispersion corrector, making possibility to have an aperture of 16 meters and a field of view 2.5 degrees for the spectral survey telescope. This paper gives a brief introduction to the previous article first, and then presents the progress of four important issues that were not discussed in depth in the previous article: (1) The study of Integrated Field Unit (IFU) observation of the galaxy extended sources in coudé focus; (2) The support structure and fabrication test of S-ADC; (3) A new special method of optical fiber positioning unit to resolve the problem of chief ray not perpendicular to the focal plane. (4) The preliminary telescope structure. Finally, this paper proposes to develop a spectroscopic survey telescope with a diameter of 14.5 meters. Its Nasmyth focus with a focal ratio of 4 or 3.5, a field of view diameter of 2.5 degrees (or 2 degrees), equipped with about 50,000 optical fibers, is mainly used for spectral survey of point sources. The coudé focus is used for integrated field spectral observation of extended sources (galaxies, etc.) with 4 arc-minutes and 2 arc-minutes field of view in diameter, equipped with about 50,000 or even more optical fibers. We refer to this Telescope simply as ESST (Extremely large Spectroscopic Survey Telescope).

Abstract:The Xinglong 2.16-m reflector is the first 2-m class astronomical telescope in China. It was jointly designed and built by the Nanjing Astronomical Instruments Factory (NAIF), Beijing Astronomical Observatory (now National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, NAOC), and Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. It is a Ritchey-Chrétien (R-C) reflector on an English equatorial mount and the effective aperture is 2.16 m. It had been the largest optical telescope in China for ∼18 years until the Guoshoujing Telescope (also called Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, LAMOST) and the Lijiang 2.4-m telescope were built. At present, there are three main instruments on the Cassegrain focus available: the Beijing Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (BFOSC) for direct imaging and low-resolution (R ∼ 500–2000) spectroscopy, the spectrograph made by Optomechanics Research Inc. (OMR) for low-resolution spectroscopy (the spectral resolutions are similar to those of BFOSC) and the fiber-fed High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS; R ∼ 30,000–65,000). The telescope is widely open to astronomers all over China as well as international astronomical observers. Each year there are more than 40 ongoing observing projects, including 6–8 key projects. Recently, some new techniques and instruments (e.g., astro-frequency comb calibration system, polarimeter, and adaptive optics) have been or will be tested on the telescope to extend its observing abilities.

Scientific Performance Analysis of the SYZ Design Vs. RC Design for China's LOT

Abstract:Currently, there is a discussion about constructing a new large optical-infrared telescope, in which the diameter of the primary mirror is 12m (Su et al., 2016). Su et al. (2016) propose an innovative design (SYZ design) which consists of three mirrors with non-zero power, including a relay mirror below the primary mirror. This design yields a good imaging quality and a relatively flatten field curvature at Nasmyth focus. To evaluate the science compatibility of this three-mirror telescope, we compare the system performance of SYZ design with conventional two-mirror telescope designs such as Ritchey–Chrétien (RC) design and Aplanatic Gregorian (AG) design available in the world in this report. We found that SYZ telescope yield a superb imaging quality. Nevertheless, RC and AG designs has a higher total throughput which translate to smaller equivalent-noise-area (ENA).

Abstract:China is planning to construct a new space-borne gravitational-wave (GW) observatory, the TianQin project, in which the spaceborne telescope is an important component in laser interferometry. The telescope is aimed to transmit laser beams between the spacecrafts for the measurement of the displacements between proof-masses in long arms. The telescope should have ultra-small wavefront deviation to minimize noise caused by pointing error, ultra-stable structure to minimize optical path noise caused by temperature jitter, ultra-high stray light suppression ability to eliminate background noise. In this paper, we realize a telescope system design with ultra-stable structure as well as ultra-low wavefront distortion for the space-based GW detection mission. The design requirements demand extreme control of high image quality and extraordinary stray light suppression ability. Based on the primary aberration theory, the initial structure design of the mentioned four-mirror optical system is explored. After optimization, the maximum RMS wavefront error is less than lamda/300 over the full field of view (FOV), which meets the noise budget on the telescope design. The stray light noise caused by the back reflection of the telescope is also analyzed. The noise at the position of optical bench is less than 10-10 of the transmitted power, satisfying the requirements of space gravitational-wave detection. We believe that our design can be a good candidate for TianQin project, and can also be a good guide for the space telescope design in any other similar science project.

Abstract:Recently, Su et al. propose an innovative design, referred as the "SYZ" design, for China's new project of a 12 m optical-infrared telescope. The SYZ telescope design consists of three aspheric mirrors with non-zero power, including a relay mirror below the primary mirror. SYZ design yields a good imaging quality and has a relatively flat field curvature at Nasmyth focus. To evaluate the science-compatibility of this three-mirror telescope, in this paper, we thoroughly compare the performance of SYZ design with that of Ritchey-Chretien (RC) design, a conventional two-mirror telescope design. Further, we propose the Observing Information Throughput (OIT) as a metric for quantitatively evaluating the telescopes' science performance. We find that although a SYZ telescope yields a superb imaging quality over a large field of view, a two-mirror (RC) telescope design holds a higher overall throughput, a better diffraction-limited imaging quality in the central field of view (FOV < 5') which is better for the performance of extreme Adaptive Optics (AO), and a generally better scientific performance with a higher OIT value.
A 30-M Submillimeter Telescope with Active Reflector

Abstract:As Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) project is going to be completed in 2008/2009, and Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) have been approved by Government in 2007, and the site survey, led by the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS, in west China, and in Antarctica, have been carried through in recent years, the Chinese astronomical community started to think about the next large astronomical facility which should be proposed and started to be built in next 10 years. A 30m aperture sub-millimeter telescope (TSMT) with an active reflector is suggested in this paper. To extend the observation band to far infrared wave length in 0.2mm, the technology developed in large optical telescope like LAMOST for segmented primary mirror is applied in the segmented reflector of this sub-millimeter telescope, but with much lower requirement in accuracy comparing with the 30m extremely large optical telescope. In this presentation, the optical system design, technologies related to the segmented active reflector, telescope structure design and others are described.

Abstract:A wide field of view Cherenkov/fluorescence telescope array is one of the main components of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory project. To serve as Cherenkov and fluorescence detectors, a flexible and mobile design is adopted for easy reconfiguring of the telescope array. Two prototype telescopes have been constructed and successfully run at the site of the ARGO-YBJ experiment in Tibet. The features and performance of the telescopes are presented.
