Abstract:In this paper a broad-band and accurate current sensor for the electric power system is described. The sensor uses the Faraday effect in optical glass and standard polarilnetric irieasurement. The design and performance of the sensor are discussed with a view to a practical working sensor.

Abstract:The expansion of the high voltage power transmission system since the 50s and 60s has aroused an interest in using optical techniques for measuring the electric current. As the most promising method among them, a current measuring method which uses a magneto-optic effect called the Faraday effect have been proposed. In principle, this method is excellent in such aspects as control of electromagnetic induction noise, rationalization of electrical insulation, extension of dynamic ranges and frequency bands. The authors have developed an optical current transducer based on the Faraday effect of dense flint glass for the purpose of utilization in 110 KV substation. It uses the rotation of the plane of polarization by a magnetic field exhibited in certain glasses. As a result of the development, high accurate optical current transduce such as the ratio error +/- 0.2% when compared to the reference CT and temperature stability (from -20 degree(s)C approximately +40 degree(s)C) +/- 0.5% were obtained. Furthermore, short-circuit current (11 KApeak) was measured with the optical current transducer, and the accuracy was +/- 3%, the bandwidth was approximately 2.5 KHz. This paper describes the principles, structures, operations, and testing results of the optical current transducer.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a magnetic-collecting optical current sensing system, which is mainly composed of magneto-optic crystal and magnetic-collecting ring for on-line current monitoring. An optical sensing platform has been built to measure the 50Hz AC current, and the sensitivity and resolution of magneto-optical sensors based on two different magneto-optical crystals are studied. The results show that the sensitivity of the ferromagnetic yttrium iron garnet crystal (YIG) is 140 times higher than that of the paramagnetic Terbium Gallium Garnet crystal (TGG), and the measurement accuracy can be improved to 0.25A, which can meet the requirements of current measurement in the power system.

Abstract:Electrical safety is a major threat to public safety worldwide, with fires and explosions causing damage to property and loss of life. Detection and monitoring of the occurrence of destructive current spikes can provide valuable insights into system health and inform preventative maintenance. Current sensors based on the Magnetoelectric (ME) effect have been regarded as optimal solutions because of the low power consumption and high sensitivity of ME devices compared to conventional current sensors (current transformers, Hall-effect current sensors, etc.). However, none of the conventional sensing techniques can provide ex-situ recording or a means for a human-readable signal output. Development of a current sensor that can sense, visualize, and record a current level remains a challenge. Here, we report an electric current visualization sensor that uses a coupled magnetoelectric/electrochromic effect to transform environmental current energy into electrical signals, and subsequently to a color change readily interpreted by a human observer. The current visualization sensor uses a PZT piezoelectric microfiber composite (MFC) / FeSiB alloy (Metglas) laminate combined with a Prussian blue-based electrochromic device (ECD). Such a current sensor demonstrates high efficiency self-powered current sensing and non-volatile signal recording.

The mixed-type optical fiber current sensor, using new magneto-optic material and having a miniature sensing head, has met the current transformer standards of class 0.5 set in GB 1028-87 and can be used outdoors with long-term stability.

Abstract:A novel fiber optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) current sensor is developed based on magnetic fluid as the medium in F-P interference cavity. A signal demodulation method based on slanted fiber Bragg grating (FBG) wavelength measurement system is proposed. Theory and principle of electromagnetic-controlled refractive index of the magnetic fluid is described, as well as the structure of the sensor system. Preliminary experiments are carried out, and the results indicate that there is a fairly good linearity of the measurement characteristic. The thickness of magnetic fluid film and initial concentration will affect the measurement results.

Abstract:A sensitivity improvement technique is proposed for a class of bulk-glass optical current sensors that employ a ferromagnetic field concentrator. The total effective optical path length is demonstrated theoretically to be an invariant regardless of the bulk glass thickness and consequently independent of the size of the concentrator gap opening. Thus, if the magnetic field is increased by reducing the gap size, the eventual Faraday rotation for a given electric current can be increased proportionally, leading to an improved device sensitivity. The dependence of the gap magnetic field on gap size is calculated with an equivalent circuit model, and this analytical treatment is compared with a dedicated finite element computer package. By taking account of various types of optical power losses present in the bulk glass, the above formulated gap dependence of magnetic field is used to aid a realistic assessment of device sensitivity and this serves as a tool to design and analyze practical bulk-glass optical current sensors. A detailed experimental study to confirm the proposed sensitivity improvement technique is also reported

Abstract:First, a theoretical analysis was performed on the effect of temperature on the performance of the sensing element of paramagnetic rare earth-doped magneto-optical glass material that can be used in an optical current transducer application. The effect comprises two aspects: the linear birefringence and the Verdet constant. On this basis, rare earth-doped glass temperature characteristics were studied, and the experimental results indicated that the linear birefringence of rare earth-doped glass increased with increasing temperature, while its magneto-optical sensitivity decreased. Comparative experiments performed for various concentrations of rare earth dopant in the glass revealed that changes in the dopant concentration had no significant effect on the performance of magneto-optical glass. At last, a comparison between rare earth-doped magneto-optical and diamagnetic dense flint glass showed that the sensitivity of the former was six times that of the latter, although the temperature stability of the former was poorer.

Abstract:A self-powered current sensor consisting of the magnetostrictive/piezoelectric laminate composite and the high-permeability nanocrystalline alloys is presented. The induced vortex magnetic flux is concentrated and amplified by using an optimized-shape nanocrystalline alloy of FeCuNbSiB into the magnetoelectric laminate composite; this optimization allows improving the sensitivity significantly as well as increasing the saturation of the current sensor. The main advantages of this current sensor are its large dynamic range and ability to measure currents accurately. An analytical expression for the relationship between current and voltage is derived by using the magnetic circuit principle, which predicts the measured sensitivity well. The experimental results exhibit an approximately linear relationship between the electric current and the induced voltage. The dynamic range of this sensor is from 0.01 A to 150 A, and a small electric current step-change of 0.01 A can be clearly distinguished at the power-line frequency of 50 Hz. We demonstrate that the current sensor has a flat operational frequency in the range of 1 Hz–20 kHz relative to a conventional induction coil. The current sensor indicates great potentials for monitoring conditions of electrical facilities in practical applications due to the large dynamic range, linear sensitivity, wide bandwidth frequency response, and good time stability.

Abstract:A type of optical current transducer(OCT) based on Faraday magneto-optic effect is introduced.In order to improve the measurement performances of OCT,a novel compensation method based on steady state reference model is proposed,which is defined as independent value self-adaptation adjustment technique.According to the standard of IEC 60044-8,the performance tests are carried out in detail.The test results indicate that the designed prototype of OCT can reflect the measured current accurately,and the steady state metering accuracy exceeds 0.2% within the temperature range from-40 to +60 ℃.A prototype has been running in the field for about eighteen months,and the operational state is well.According to the field data,the long-term stability of OCT is analyzed by discussing the fluctuation of output light intensity of the optical sensing head.The designed OCT has achieved the requests in the field of measurement accuracy and operation(stability.)

Abstract:The characteristics of optic fiber current transducer are introduced. Compared with the traditional transducer, it has higher measuring precision, better transient characteristic, simpler insulation structure, smaller size, lower cost and better scalability. Optic fiber current transducers can be divided into two groups: opto-electronic current transducer (OECT) and magnetic optical current transducer (MOCT). The principles and structure characteristics of these two types of optic fiber current transducers are presented. It has broad prospects to apply the optic fiber technique integrated with computer technique in the power systems, in particular, in the integrated substation automation system.

Abstract:The results of the application of a new physical effect, the thermal lens coupled magnetooptical effect in ferrofluid, to the optical measurements of high voltage current were introduced. The main advantages of this method in comparison with the application of Faraday effect are no need of polarized light, thus the problems in polarization-maintaining optical fibers which prevent the practical application can be avoided, and the signal to noise ratio is improved. The results show that the system can measure the current range from 0 to 500 A.

Abstract:For the application of high-frequency current detection in power systems, such as very fast transient current, lightning current, partial discharge pulse current, etc., current sensors with a quick response are indispensable. Here, we propose a high-frequency magnetoelectric current sensor, which consists of a PZT piezoelectric ceramic and Metglas amorphous alloy. The proposed sensor is designed to work under d15 thickness-shear mode, with the resonant frequency around 1.029 MHz. Furthermore, the proposed sensor is fabricated as a high-frequency magnetoelectric current sensor. A comparative experiment is carried out between the tunnel magnetoresistance sensor and the magnetoelectric sensor, in the aspect of high-frequency current detection up to 3 MHz. Our experimental results demonstrate that the d15 thickness-shear mode magnetoelectric sensor has great potential for high-frequency current detection in smart grids.

Abstract:A new type of high-current sensor is designed and developed in this paper.Its hardcore is a disc-shaped magnetoelectric laminate based on piezoelectric material PZT and magnetoelectric material Terfenol-D.Combined with the ferrite magnetic circular,the sensor can measure power-frequency current over the range of A~102 A.The structure of this current sensor has the advantages of no-circuit-connection and no-extra-source-supply.Thus,it is convenient to install,maintain or uninstall.The experiment results illustrate that the sensor has an electric current sensitivity of 0.058 5 V/A,and the sensor shows good reliability.This new type of a high-current sensor has great potential of further researches and applications.

Abstract:Due to the shortcomings of the traditional inductive current sensor and optical current sensor, a new type of current sensor with the application of Giant Magnetostrictive Material (GMM) is designed in this paper. This device has the advantages of none transient magnetic saturation, high precision, high response speed, and immune to environment temperature change. The structure design and operating principle of the GMM current sensor are introduced. Analyze the bias magnetic field, prestress force and material characteristics, and select the standard size of the GMM stick. Finally study the magnetic field interference on the application of electric transmission line one-phase measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, we have proposed and experimentally demonstrated an optical fiber current sensing system based on optical carrier microwave interferometry (OCMI) technology and the virtual Vernier effect. The OCMI pattern in the electric domain is formed by the interference of optical carrier microwave signals reflected by two fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). One FBG is attached to a giant magnetostrictive material (GMM): Terfenol-D as the sensing element, while the other one serves as the reference element. Current changes will cause axial tensile strain of the sensing FBG on the material and thus the wavelength of the sensing FBG will change, which will lead to a shift of the frequency of resonance dip of the OCMI pattern in the electric domain. By monitoring the frequency shift, the current change can be demodulated. Two FBGs with different distances (∼ 27 cm and ∼ 5 m) are employed in the experiment, which results in different FSRs and thus sensitivities of the proposed system. In the experiment, we obtained current sensitivities of −111.21 MHz/A and −2.65 MHz/A with increasing current when distances between two FBGs are ∼ 27 cm and ∼ 5 m, respectively. To further increase the sensitivity and improve the flexibility of the proposed system, the virtual Vernier effect is incorporated for the sensing system with FBGs’ distance of ∼ 5 m, without requiring an actual reference interferometer. When increasing current, the sensitivities are 19.82 MHz/A and 32.70 MHz/A by utilizing the virtual fundamental Vernier effect (FVE) and the virtual 1st-order harmonic Vernier effect (HVE), respectively. The proposed sensing system offers advantages such as tunable sensitivity, good repeatability and stability, high resolution, simple structure, and so on.

Abstract:On the basis of theory of electromagnetic field theory and fiber grating technology, a practical sensor of electric current is reported in this paper. The Bragg wavelength shift is linear to the electric current intensity, and the range of linear tuning is about 1.0 nm. The sensitivity of electric current sensor is up to 11.696 A/nm. The formulas have been derived theoretically, and the experimental results accord with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric (ME) sensors are widely studied and well suited for current condition monitoring in smart grids due to their high sensitivity, low power consumption, and compact size. However, designing ME sensors that simultaneously achieve low magnetic noise and a large linear range remains challenging. In this work, we propose and systematically study a multilayered magnetoelectric sensor (MLMS). We experimentally demonstrate that the voltage noise is effectively suppressed by connecting the piezoelectric elements of the MLMS in series. Additionally, the magnetic flux concentration effect is weakened by magnetic shielding from the outer Metglas laminates, which increases the optimized bias field to 52 Oe for the MLMS. Consequently, an equivalent magnetic noise as low as 16.7 pT/rtHz at 1 Hz is obtained and an enlarged linear range from 20 pT to 2 mT is achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed MLMS could linearly detect a wide range of power currents from 0.1 mA to 400 A, with nonlinear error and current resolution as low as 0.05% and 0.1 mA, respectively.

Abstract:An optical current transducer (OCT) system which is applicable to measure current of electric power system is introduced.A mathematics model for this system with Faraday sensor works on both Faraday magneto-optic effect and linear birefringence effect by the method of matrix optics is developed.The linear birefringence effect's influence on sensitivity, linearity and steadiness of the system and draws a conclusion that the main factor affected the performance of the system is linear birefringence effect is analyzed.Finally some useful countermeasures to linear birefringence effect are provided.
