Abstract:We have synthesized C60 in gram quantities using the Kratschmer and Huffman technique. The arc vaporization of a graphite rod was performed at 100 Torr in a static helium atmosphere. The yield by toluene extraction is 7% of the soot produced. C60 in the toluene extract was identified by mass, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. The result of analytical HPLC showed the content of C70 to be 13% in the toluene extract and 9% in the samples sublimated at 400-degrees-C. X-ray and electron diffraction studies show that C60 molecules form fcc or hcp crystals, depending on the substrate and sublimation conditions. A new phase with tetragonal symmetry has been found in the sublimated sample, presumably formed by C70 or larger C fullerenes.

Abstract:AbstractA 19‐membered open‐cage fullerene derivative was prepared from C60 in 7 steps and 5.5 % yield through the peroxide‐mediate pathway. There are four carbonyl groups, an ether oxygen and a quinoxaline moiety on the rim of the orifice. A chloride anion could be inserted into its cavity by heating with hydrochloric acid at 60 °C for 4 h. Encapsulation of fluoride, bromide and iodide anions was also achieved at slightly more forcing conditions, 90 °C for 14 h. Single crystal X‐ray structures of the sodium salt of the chloride and the bromide encapsulated derivatives were obtained, which showed the halide anion in the center of the cavity and two sodium cations connecting two cages through coordination to the oxygen atoms on the rim of the orifices. The halide encapsulation ratio is quantitative in the isolated products.

Abstract:The fullerendiol C60(OH)2(OOt-Bu)4 1 reacts with various arylboronic acids ArB(OH)2 to form fullerene-containing boronic esters C60(O2BAr)(OOt-Bu)4 in up to 95% yield depending on the structure of aryl group. Bis(pinacolato)diboron (B(OCMe2)2)2 also reacts with 1 to form C60(O2BB(OCMe2)2)(OOt-Bu)4. The bisboronic ester C60(O)(O2BAr)2(OOt-Bu)2 was also obtained starting from a tetrahydroxyl fullerene derivative C60(O)(OH)4(OOt-Bu)2. The fullerenyl boronic esters are moderately stable in air. Single crystal X-ray structure of C60(O2BPh)(OOt-Bu)4 was obtained.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we demonstrate that Si-60 fullerene cage can be stabilized by exohydrogenated method. In contrast to previous theoretical studies that Si-60 fullerene geometry construction will be seriously distorted when it is bare or encapsulated by metal atom clusters, exohydrogenated scheme shows that Si60H60 cage will be able to keep perfect fullerene structure similar to C-60.

Abstract:A series of regioisomeric bis-methanofullerenes (diethyl[60]fullerenobisacetate) were prepared by reaction of the sulfonium ylide with C-60. Seven stable resultant regioisomers were completely isolated on a preparative HPLC and identified by FT-IR, UV-vis, TOF-MS, and H-1 and C-13 NMR measurements. The structures of these bisadducts were assigned based on 1) the relationship of the polarities of the regioisomers with the elution order from HPLC; 2) a comparison of their UV-vis spectra with those of corresponding Bingel-Hirsch bisadducts; and 3) the identification of their molecular symmetries by their H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The electrochemical properties of the resultant regioisomeric bismethanofullerene derivatives were investigated through cyclic voltammetry (CV). The bisadducts exhibited more negative reduction potential than the pristine C-60. Trans-2- and cis-3-bisadducts had the least negative potential E-1/2(1) of all the other bisadducts.

Abstract:Four isomers are currently known for the trioxygenated fullerene derivative C-60(O)(3), three regioisomers with all of the oxygen addends as epoxy groups and the unstable ozonide isomer with a 1,2,3-trioxlane ring. Here we report the synthesis of an open-cage isomer for C-60(O)(3) with a ketolactone moiety embedded into the fullerene skeleton through a three-step procedure mediated by fullerene peroxide chemistry. Two fullerene skeleton carbon-carbon bonds are cleaved in the process. The open-cage derivative C-60(O)(3) can be converted back to C-60 through deoxygenation with PPh3. Single crystal X-ray structure confirmed the open-cage structure.

Abstract:A new type of open-cage [60]fullerene was prepared starting from our previously reported open-cage [60]fullerenes containing hydroxy and tert-butylperoxo groups, and an iminofuranone moiety on the rim of the orifice. The key reactions are alcoholysis with MeOH/PCl5 and reductive aromatization with SnCl2 or HI (aq). The resulting open-cage compound contains two ketone carbonyls, two amide carbonyls, and one ester carbonyl group. The X-ray crystal structure of the precursor compound shows that the 18-membered orifice is almost completely blocked because of the presence of the amide group directly above the orifice.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:Benzannulated enyne-allenes bearing an aryl substituent at both the alkynyl and allenyl termini are excellent precursors of 5-aryl-11H-benzo[b]fluorenyl derivatives having the carbon frameworks of fullerene fragments. The mildness of the reaction conditions and the availability of several synthetic methods for benzannulated enyne-allenes allow the design of new synthetic pathways leading to bowl-and basket-shaped fullerene fragments. Specifically, a bowl-shaped C28H18 hydrocarbon bearing a 27-carbon framework of C-60 and a basket-shaped C56H40 hydrocarbon bearing a 54-carbon framework of C-60 were synthesized. The interior 30-carbon core of the C56H40 hydrocarbon can be regarded as a partially hydrogenated [5,5]circulene, a C30H12 semibuckminsterfullerene. In addition, a basket-shaped C56H38 hydrocarbon was also constructed to serve as a precursor toward an end-cap template for (6,6) carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:A reinvestigation of the reaction between C-60(2-) and benzyl bromide in benzonitrile containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP) has shown that there are more reaction products than previously reported. Use of a silica rather than a "Buckyclutcher I" column for HPLC purification led to isolation of two previously unattained products in the reaction mixture, one of which was identified as 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 by UV-vis and NMR. The earlier incorrectly assigned 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 was identified as the methanofullerene C61HPh by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The electrochemistry of genuine 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 shows that its first reduction potential in PhCN containing 0.1 M TBAP is cathodically shifted by 100 mV with respect to E-1/2 for reduction of 1,4-(PhCH2)(2)C-60, indicating that the addition pattern significantly affects the electrochemistry of derivatized C-60. Visible and near-IR spectra of the monoanion and dianion of 1,2-(PhCH2)(2)C-60 are also reported.

Abstract:A soluble fullerene, TAZC60, bearing an electron transport moiety (triazole) is synthesized and characterized. TAZC60 possesses a band gap of 2.2 eV, and HOMO and LUMO energy levels of 5.9 and 3.7 eV, respectively. Thin films of TAZC60 exhibit an electron mobility of 2.2 x 10(-8) m(2)/V s, as determined from the current-voltage characteristics that fit with a space-charge limited current (SCLC). These properties are similar to those of [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester, PCBM, a soluble fullerene widely used in organic photovoltaics. The strategy of modifying fullerenes with a solublizing electron transport moiety may open avenues for the design of more specific polymers for controlling the morphology and transport properties of polymer-fullerene blends for polymer solar cells.

Abstract:Fullerene skeleton modification has been investigated through selective cleavage of the fullerene carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions. Several cage-opened fullerene derivatives including three [59]fullerenones with an 18-membered-ring orifice and one [59]fullerenone with a 19-membered-ring orifice have been prepared starting from the fullerene mixed peroxide 1, C60(OOtBu)6. The prepositioned tert-butyl peroxy groups in 1 serve as excellent oxygen sources for formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The cage-opening reactions were initiated by photoinduced homolysis of the tBu-O bond, followed by sequential ring expansion steps. A key step of the ring expansion reactions is the oxidation of adjacent fullerene hydroxyl and amino groups by diacetoxyliodobenzene (DIB). Aminolysis of a cage-opened fullerene derivative containing an anhydride moiety resulted in multiple bond cleavage in one step. A domino mechanism was proposed for this reaction. Decarboxylation led to elimination of one carbon atom from the C60 cage and formation of [59]fullerenones. The cage-opened [59]fullerenones were found to encapsulate water under mild conditions. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data. Single-crystal structures were also obtained for five skeleton-modified derivatives including two water-encapsulated fulleroids.

Abstract:The efficient nucleophilic addition of aryl Grignard reagents (aryl=4-MeOC(6)H(4), 4-Me(2)NC(6)H(4), Ph, 4-CF(3)C(6)H(4), and thienyl) to C(60) in the presence of DMSO produced 1,2-arylhydro[60]fullerenes after acid treatment. The reactions of the anions of these arylhydro[60]fullerenes with either dimethylphenylsilylmethyl iodide or dimethyl(2-isopropoxyphenyl)silylmethyl iodide yielded the target compounds, 1-aryl-4-silylmethyl[60]fullerenes. The properties and structures of these 1-aryl-4-silylmethyl[60]fullerenes (aryl=4-MeOC(6)H(4), thienyl) were examined by electrochemical studies, X-ray crystallography, flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave-conductivity (FP-TRMC) measurements, and electron-mobility measurements by using a space-charge-limited current (SCLC) model. Organic photovoltaic devices with a polymer-based bulk heterojunction structure and small-molecule-based p-n and p-i-n heterojunction configurations were fabricated by using 1-aryl-4-silylmethyl[60]fullerenes as an electron acceptor. The most efficient device exhibited a power-conversion efficiency of 3.4% (short-circuit current density: 8.1 mA/cm(2), open-circuit voltage: 0.69 V, fill factor: 0.59).

Abstract:A photoelectron spectroscopy investigation of the fluorofullerene anions C60Fn- (n = 17, 31, 35, 43, 45, 47) and the doubly charged anions C60F342- and C60F462- is reported. The first electron affinities for the corresponding neutral molecules, C60Fn, were directly measured and were found to increase as n increased, reaching the extremely high value of 5.66 +/- 0.10 eV for C60F47. Density functional calculations suggest that the experimentally observed species C60F17-, C60F35-, and C60F47- were each formed by reductive defluorination of the parent fluorofullerene, C-3n-C60F18, C60F36 (a mixture of isomers), and D-3-C60F48, respectively, without rearrangement of the remaining fluorine atoms. The DFT-predicted stability of C60F47- was verified by its generation by chemical reduction from D-3-C60F48 in chloroform solution at 25 degrees C and its characterization by mass spectrometry and F-19 NMR spectroscopy. Further reductive defluorination of C60F47- in solution resulted in the selective generation of a new fluorofullerene, D-2-C60F44, which was also characterized by mass spectrometry and F-19 NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:The reaction of M(CO)(3)(CH3CN)(3) (M = Mo, W) with an equimolar quantity of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb) results in formation of fac-M(CO)(3)(dppb) (CH3CN) (1, M = Mo, 73%; 2, M = W, 62%). Interaction of 1 or 2 with [60]fullerene in chlorobenzene at about 80 degrees C gives the isomerically pure isomers mer-M(CO)(3)(dppb)(eta(2)-C-60) (3, M = Mo, 76%; 4, M = W, 66%). All the new compounds 1-4 have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods, as well as by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for 3 and 4.

Abstract:Highly fluorinated fullerenes with a chemical composition of C60F48 have been prepared and characterized. Their solubility of the new nanomaterials in the ionic liquid (IL) has been compared with raw fullerenes C60. Fluorination may appear as a convenient method to enhance the solubility of carbonaceous nanomaterials in a fluorinated based anion IL. Indeed, the ability of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BmIm][NTf2]), to solubilize C60 and C60F48 was investigated using optical microscopy and UV–vis spectroscopy. While C60 has very poor solubility in this IL (below 0.07 mmol/L), the solubility increases at least eightfold, i.e. more than 1.0 mg/mL (or 0.61 mmol/L) for C60F48 samples. The presence of fluorine atoms on fullerene seems to enhance the stability of the solvated molecules in IL thanks to the limitation of the aggregation of C60F48 in [BmIm][NTf2]. This improvement of the solubility could be explained by the beneficial effect of the fluorination that induces a decrease of the π-π interaction between carbonaceous solutes as the carbon hybridization changes from sp2 to sp3 through the formation of C-F covalent bonds and thus enhances the interaction between the solvent and the solute. Fluorination appears as an efficient approach to limit the use of volatile organic compounds usually used as co-solvent to enhance the dispersion mechanism.
