Abstract:We report observations of the photorefractive effect in a low glass transition temperature composite based on a bi-functional side chain copolymer of N-methacryloxypropy1-3-(p-nitrophenyl)azo carbazole with N-methacryl-oxypropyl carbazole. A two-beam coupling gain coefficient of 9.4cm−1 and an electro-optic coefficient of 9.3pmV−1 were measured at the applied electric field of 92.4Vμ−1 by the typical two-beam coupling experiment and the compensation electro-optic measurement technique.

Abstract:The organic photorefractive (PR) materials and devices have attracted much interest due to the wide potential applications. In this talk, we report the recent study on PR materials and PR physical property in our group. To overcome the disadvantages (e.g. instability and critical environment requirement) of the multi-component PR composite, two novel three-component PR systems were fabricated based on a series of azo dyes and liquid crystals as both EO chromophore and plasticizer, respectively, and the excellent PR performances were obtained. More recent, mono-component PR sample based on a fully functional polymer, poly(9-(2-ethyl-hexyl)-3-[2-(4-methanesulfonyl-phenyl)vinyl]-9H-carbazole), was reported to exhibit two-beam coupling coefficient more than 100 cm−1 at 632.8 nm wavelength at applied electric field of 100 V/μm. The fast response time was obtained from composite doped with β,β-diacetyl-4-methoxylstyrene (DAMST). Besides, DAMST also is the more suitable selection to operate at short wavelength.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of a new, low-Tg polymer exhibiting the photorefractive (PR) effect. The photorefractive polymer contains azo derivative as a second-order nonlinear optical chromophore and carbazole as a charge-transporting group. The photorefractive sample was fabricated by doping 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF) of 2 wt.% as photosensitizer, which could be poled by applied electric field at room temperature to achieve large orientational birefringence without doping plasticizer. Photorefractive experiments showed a high two-beam coupling gain coefficient of 122 cm−1 at applied electric field of 85 V/μm. In comparison to host–guest polymer composite systems, long lifetime and high stability of the photorefractive sample was proved.

Abstract:A new bi-functional photorefractive host polymer, poly{(2-carbazolylethyl acrylate)co-2-[2',5'-dimethyl-4'-(4"-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy]-ethyl acrylate}, was synthesized. The well known nonlinear optical molecule 2,5-dimethyl-4-(p-nitrophenylazo)anisole was used as the electro-optic side-chain and the carbazole group as the holes transport side-chain. The polymer was doped with the holes donor 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone for photo-carriers generation and N-ethylcarbazole for lowering the glass transition temperature. The composite film exhibited a two-beam coupling coefficient of 78 cm(-1) and a net diffraction efficiency of 12% at a wavelength of 633 nm with an applied electric field of 92 V mu m(-1) under room temperature. Contrary to what is found in crystals, the two-beam coupling coefficient is illumination-intensity-dependent. A theoretical explanation was given. Abstract:. The photorefractivity of a photorefractive composite consisting of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) doped with a non-room-temperature liquid crystal, 4-butyloxy-4’-cyanobiphenyl (4OCB), and C 60 was studied by means of measuring the two-beam coupling coefficients. The results show that the photorefractivity is enhanced by phase separation.

Abstract:Photorefractive (PR) composites based on poly(N-vinylcarbozale) and azobenzene have been fabricated. Two-beam-coupling and four-wave-mixing phenomena were observed in the absence of an external electric field or prepoling. The maximum two-beam-coupling gain coefficient and the refractive index modulation were measured to be 79 cm−1 and 2.2×10−4 respectively. The all-optical-PR phenomenon is explained based on the photoassisted poling of the azo dye by the synergism of the photoisomerization and the longitudinal electric field due to longitudinal intensity gradient of writing light beams. The bi-hole-transporting system provides more charge-carrier traps resulting in improvement of PR performance.

Abstract:Organic photoconductive composites materials have become one of the hot researches in organic photoconductive materials at present. In this paper, the fabrication and photoconductive properties of several new and high_performance organic photoconductive composites were introduced. Their photoconductive properties and composite mechanism are investigated as well. And their applications in photoconductive devices such as single_layered organic photoreceptors were reviewed briefly. It has been demonstrated that the preparations of composite materials are effective ways to improve photoconductive properties of organic materials. Several effective methods to design and prepare high_performance organic photoconductive composite materials were presented as well.

Abstract:Organic/polymeric semiconductors are promising materials for image sensors. This review has outlined the advantages of organic/polymeric image sensor materials and commented on a few typical systems such as conjugated polymer/C60 composites, conjugated polymer/inorganic semi- conductor nano-crystal composites, phthalocyanines and biomaterials. The effect of electronic structure of donor/acceptor, photoinduced charge transfer process and phase separation behavior in composite materials on the photosensitivity of related sensors has been discussed. The pivotal scientific problems that desiderated to be solved are demonstrated at the end of this review.

Abstract:We report the synthesis and characterization of a new, low-Tg polymer exhibiting the photorefractive effect. The photorefractive polymer contains a second-order nonlinear optical chromophore and a charge transporting group. Due to long flexible spacer between pendant groups and backbone, the polymer exhibits low glass transition temperature of about 52 °C. The photorefractive sample was fabricated by doping 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone of 2 wt% as photosensitizer, which could be poled by applied electric field at room temperature in order to achieve large orientational birefringence without doping plasticizer. Due to reasonable design of nonlinear chromophore and increasingly free rotation of chromophore molecules, photorefractive experiments showed a high two-beam coupling gain coefficient of 122 cm−1 at applied electric field of 85 V/μm were obtained. In comparison to host–guest polymer composite systems, long lifetime and high stability of the photorefractive sample was proved.

Abstract:A photorefractive composite composed of 8-pertyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (80CB)/N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine (TPD)/2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq(3))/polycarbonate plastic was fabricated. The additive of Alq3 in the composite leads to a larger two-beam coupling coefficient Gamma and shorter response time. Gamma over 330 cm(-1) at an applied electric field of 26 V mum(-1) was measured while Gamma of the sample without Alq(3) was only 213 cm(-1). It is presumed that the electron-injecting material Alq(3) and charge-transporting material TPD form more effective traps in the composite, which leads to the improvement in the PR performance.

Abstract:The photorefractive properties of PVK-based polymeric composites doped with three liquid crystals, 4OCB (4-pertyloxy-4 '-cyanobiphenyl), 5OCB (4-pentyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl) and 8OCB (4-octyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl), were investigated by using the two-beam coupling experiment at 633mm. A gain coefficient over 34 cm(-1) at an applied field of 60 V/mum was observed. Among the three materials, the 8OCB-doped composite demonstrated a stronger orientational effect and the influence on charge field became apparent.

Abstract:We compare the photorefractivity in Poly(vinylcarbazole) (PVK)-based composites doped with N-(4-nitrophenyl)-(l)-prolinol (NPP) and its derivative, N-(4-nitrophenyl)pyrrolidine-2-methyl methacrylate (NPPMMA) at the ratio of PVK:NPP (or NPPMMA):2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone: N-ethylcarbazole = 35 : 50 : 1 : 15 wt.%. Both the effective electro-optic (EO) coefficient and photorefractivity of the sample using NPP as chromophore are much larger than those of the sample containing only NPPMMA. We propose that the methacrylate chain in NPPMMA plays an obstruction to the chromophore orientation. This concludes that a long chain attached to the chromophore is deleterious to the photorefractive effect when a separated plasticizer is used. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel electro-optical chromophore, 1-hexyloxyl-2,5-dimethyl-4-(4'-nitrophenylazo)benzene (HDMNPAB), is reported which is suitable for the performance of the photorefractive effect in a low glass transition temperature photorefractive polymer composite. A high two-beam coupling gain of 141 cm(-1) and a grating amplitude of Delta n = 2.7 x 10(-3) at 84 V mu m(-1) are obtained with the composite film of HDMNPAB doped in poly(N-vinylcarbazole): 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone charge transport network in a weight ratio of 44 : 55 : 1. In this composite, HDMNPAB acts as both the electro-optical chromophore and the plasticizer. The glass transition temperature of the composite is measured to be 44 degrees C. Abstract:We developed a novel photorefractive (PR) polymer PVK-PBA:DR1:TNF, and its film sample was prepared with outstanding performance by using the method of combination of vacuum saturated vapour resolving with vacuum hot-pressing. The sample exhibits distinctive PR properties with the two-beam coupling coefficient up to 140 cm−1 and four-wave mixing (FWM) diffraction efficiency above 1.5% in the absence of applied external electric field. The designed experiments, including measurements of the second-order nonlinear coefficient and birefringence as well as the relationship between the diffraction efficiencies of the FWM and the external bias field, were performed to understand the underlying mechanism, because this phenomenon cannot be explained by the conventional PR theories. It is presented that because of its high orientational mobility and large dipole moment, the polymer produces the photovoltaic effect under the irradiation of laser to induce a space-charge field so as to engender the PR effect under zero or low external fields. A model based on the assumption was established and the simulation agrees well with the experimental results.

A non-azo fast three-component photorefractive (PR) composite that worked at short wavelengths was also developed. Abstract:In photorefractive (PR) materials with a large PR gain ΓL (Γ is the two-beam coupling coefficient and L is the effective interaction length), beam fanning effect (amplified scattering) was often observed, such as in BaTi03 and KNSBN crystals,12 which is the base to implement a self-pumped conjugator. Abstract:Fairly strong photo-refraction was observed of the PVK-PBA/DRI/INF composite polymer,prepqred by vacuum hot-pressing plus vapor dispersion,in the two-beam coupling and four-wave mixing diffraction measurement with no external electric field applied.Second-harmonic generation induced by laser irradiation was also observed.To account for our observations,we propose a self-orientated polarization mechanism,in which charge separation induced by laser irradiation results in formation of the push-electron and pull-electron radicals at the two ends of a DRI molecule.And interaction of these radicals and the traps leads to polarization of a DRI molecule and the build-up of an internal periodic electric field,which is responsible for the photo-refraction.The holography storage with the composite polymer was also performed with good results.

Abstract:When a p-polarized beam propagates through a high-performance photorefractive polymer composite, poly dimethyl-4-(4′-nitrophenylazo)benzene, its transmission behavior is influenced by three effects: the electroabsorption, the photorefractive coupling with the reflected beam from the rear surface, and the amplified scattering. From the measurements on the incidence angle dependence as well as the applied-electric-field dependence of the three effects, some conclusions are obtained. At a small incidence angle with a low applied electric field, both the amplified scattering and the electroabsorption are small whereas the coupling between the incident beam and the reflected beam plays a principal role. At a large incidence angle or with a high poling electric field, the transmission is influenced mainly by the amplified scattering and the electroabsorption. A poling electric field asymmetric loss to the amplification scattering is also observed.
