Abstract:The solubility of ThO2(am) in the aqueous Na+-H+-OH--NO3--H2O-EDTA system as a function of pC(H+) (= - log[H-divided by]) and variable NaNO3 (0.5 M to 6.0 M) has been determined. The experimental observations show that between pC(H+) values 4.2 to 8.2, a stoichiometric 1 : 1 Th-EDTA complex forms that completely saturates the added chelate concentration. Th concentrations then decrease linearly with increasing pC(Hdivided by) at pC(Hdivided by) > 9.0. These changes in solubility are not predicted by currently available thermodynamic models. The ion-interaction model of Pitzer was used to interpret these solubility data. Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the speciation under basic conditions is dominated by monomeric mixed Th-OH-EDTA complexes. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy confirmed the absence of the higher order (e.g. dimeric) species. The equilibrium constants for the following reactions were determined from analysis of the solubility data: ThO2(am)+EDTA(4-)+2H(2)OH<---->Th(OH)(2)EDTA(2-)+ 2OH(-), log K = -6.0: and ThO2(am) + EDTA(4-) + 2H(2)O <----> Th(OH)(3)EDTA(3-)+OH-, log K similar to -7.5. Pitzer ion-interaction parameters for the Th(OH)(2)EDTA(2-)- and the Th(OH)(3)EDTA(3-) species were calculated. It was also determined that the solubility method for examining the complexation of tetravalent actinides with EDTA is limited to relatively high aqueous EDTA concentrations, relative to the amount of ThO2(am) precipitate, owing to the adsorption of the EDTA chelator by the solid phase.

Abstract:Ammonium sulfate [(NH4)(2)SO4], an undesired byproduct in the caprolactam process, can be converted into recyclable NH3 by the substitution reaction with lime milk to reduce the ammonia consumption and produce high-quality gypsum. However, the thermodynamic mechanism of this process has not been clarified, which results in the unpredictable crystal phase of calcium sulfate products. In this work, a thermodynamic model for the CaSO4-(NH4)(2)SO4-NH3-H2O quaternary system with the asymmetric E-NRTL activity coefficient model was developed to understand the thermodynamic behavior. The modeling works involved the data fitting of binary solubility, osmotic coefficient, enthalpy of solution, and heat capacity data as well as ternary solubility data. It was shown that the model could predict the solubility of ammonia and calcium sulfate in aqueous ammonium sulfate solution with temperature ranging from 0 to 160 degrees C and pressure up to 1.0 MPa. Furthermore, the constructed model for the quaternary system was proved to be reliable for predicting the phase transition behavior of solid CaSO4 in the electrolyte mixtures of (NH4)(2)SO4-NH3-H2O solution. For the regeneration process of NH3 from ammonium sulfate, this work will offer a reliable model for the reactors design and process optimization.
Dissolution Process and Thermodynamic Model Correlation of Homovanillic Acid in Different Solvents and Intermolecular Force Analysis

Abstract:For insoluble drug compounds, co-solvent has been widely used as a very useful dissolution technology. The dissolution of homovanillic acid (HVA) in pure and mixed solvents over the temperature range of 273.15-318.15 K was studied. In a pure solvent, the maximum solubility at 318.15 K was obtained in ethanol (1.359 X 10(-2) in mole fraction), followed by n-propanol (1.307 X 10(-2)), isopropanol (1.273 X 10(-2)), ethyl acetate (1.17 X 10(-2)), 1-butanol (1.017 X 10(-2)), i-butanol (9.504 X 10(-3)), acetonitrile (7.960 X 10(-3)), toluene (2.267 X 10(-4)), and cyclohexane (6.124 X 10(-5)). In a mixture of (toluene + isopropanol), it increased to a maximum value with the increasing concentration of isopropanol and then decreased at a certain temperature. The effect of solute-solvent intermolecular interactions on the solubility in pure and mixed solvents was presented in the form of the analysis of solvent properties using the KAT-LSER method. The function of solubility data, temperatures, and solvent composition was evaluated by the modified Apelblat equation, lambda h equation, and Jouyban-Acree model. The result of relative average deviation (RAD) indicates that the modified Apelblat equation and Jouyban-Acree model could provide a reasonable correlation in studied solvents.

Abstract:In this work, solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) data for ternary 3-nitrophthalic acid + 4-nitrophthalic acid + 1,4-dioxane system was determined at (283.15, 293.15, 303.15, 313.15 and 323.15) K, respectively. The solid-liquid phase diagrams of the ternary system were constructed based on the measured solubility data. The solid phases formed in the studied system were determined by Schreinemaker's wet residue method. In addition, the density of equilibrium liquid phase was obtained. At each temperature, there are two pure solids formed which correspond to 3-nitrophthalic acid and adduct of 4-nitrophthalic acid with 1,4-dioxane, in which the mole ratio of the two components is 2:3, in the ternary 3-nitrophthalic acid + 4-nitrophthalic acid + 1,4-dioxane system. The solubility data for the ternary system were regressed and calculated using the NRTL model which gives acceptable results for the investigated systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The transformations of monovalent thallium (Tl) in an aqueous environment may be affected significantly by Tl(I) partitioning at the solid-water interface during sorption. Models used to quantify the kinetics of Tl(I) adsorption on heterogeneous adsorbents and formation of multiple complexes under a wide range of water chemistry conditions can accurately predict the environmental fate of thallium. In this study, Tl(I) sorption on representative titanium dioxide at different solution pH values and loading concentrations was investigated with two unified adsorption models, diffuse layer modeling and kinetics modeling. Three Tl(I) surface complexes, TiOTl, TiOHTl+, and TiOTlOH-, were used in the diffuse layer model and successfully described batch adsorption and the results of spectroscopic analyses. The contribution of TiOHTl+ to the adsorption capacity was much higher than those of TiOTl and TiOTlOH- under neutral and weakly alkaline conditions, while the species TiOTlOH- predominated among Tl(I) complexes in strongly alkaline environments. The adsorption and desorption rate coefficients derived from thermodynamics and kinetics coupling modeling suggested the influence of different complex characteristics on adsorption and desorption of Tl(I). Our results provide a comprehensive model for predicting the dynamic binding behavior of Tl at heterogeneous solid-water interfaces.

Abstract:In this work, solid–liquid equilibria (SLE) data for the ternary 3-nitrophthalic anhydride + 4-nitrophthalic anhydride + 1,4-dioxane system were obtained at (283.15, 303.15, and 323.15) K. The solid–liquid phase diagrams of the ternary system were constructed based on the measured solubility data. There existed two pure solid phases at each temperature in the studied system, pure 3-nitrophthalic anhydride and 4-nitrophthalic anhydride, which were identified by the wet residue method of Schreinemaker. Furthermore, the density (ρ) of the equilibrium liquid phase was determined. The ternary phase diagram and solubility data for the system 3-nitrophthalic anhydride + 4-nitrophthalic anhydride + 1,4-dioxane, which shows a much more practical application for the region where pure 3-nitrophthalic anhydride and 4-nitrophthalic anhydride are obtained, are much larger than those in the system with 2-propanone as a solvent.

Abstract:This paper is to critically analyze the effects of solvent properties and composition on the solubility of trifloxystrobin. The solubility of trifloxystrobin in eight mono-solvents and two binary solvents was determined at temperatures ranging from 283.15 K to 318.15 K. Among the selected mono-solvents, the solubility of trifloxystrobin in alcohols was greater than that in alkanes and obeyed the following order: n-propanol > ethanol > methanol > 2-propanol > n-butanol > n-hexane > n-heptane > n-octane. For the binary solvents, as the mole fraction of good solvent (methanol/ethanol) increased, the solubility of trifloxystrobin increased monotonically at the set temperatures. In addition, the obtained solubility data was correlated with the Apelblat, NRTL, Wilson and Apelblat Jouyban Acree model, and these models were in good agreement with the experimental values. The NRTL model given the results of entropy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy, which indicated that the dissolution was spontaneous, endothermic and entropically driven. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns proved that there was no polymorphic transformation during the solubility measurement.

Abstract:Alkylated anthraquinone is widely used as promising redox-active materials for both redox flow batteries technology and hydrogen peroxide production via anthraquinone oxidation (AO) process, yet its inadequate solubility in solvents has been the one of the main limitations resulting to insufficient energy density of working solution. In present study, solubility of 2-ethylanthraquinone was specifically investigated by the synthetic method at the temperature range from 304.15 to 344.15 K under the pressure of 101.325 kPa. In support for decent working solution exploit, various types of solvents were specifically selected as the working solution constituent in this work. Solubility data and activity coefficient of 2-ethylanthraquinone were correlated by modified Apelblat and lambda-h models. Furthermore, thermodynamic analysis was subsequently performed based on the thermodynamic fitting results. As a result, dissolution process of 2-ethylanthraquinone is endothermic and entropy-driven in these neat solvents, higher dissolution temperature leads to smaller value of partial molar excess Gibbs free energy and therefore results to a greater solubility. The Aqueous Complexation of Thorium with Citrate under Neutral to Basic Conditions

Abstract:Summary The aqueous complexation of thorium with citrate was investigated under neutral to basic conditions and over a broad range of ionic strengths. The solubility data for ThO2(am) as a function of citrate concentration indicate the presence of stable species with citrate-to-metal ratios of between two to three. The dependence of the ThO2(am) solubilities on hydrogen ion concentration can also be readily explained by the classical assumption of hydrolysis of the central Th(IV) ion to form mixed thorium-hydroxide-citrate complexes. 13C NMR spectra of the species in solution confirm that the citrate-to-metal ratio of the species in solution is between two and three and show that the citrate attaches to the metal in a bidentate fashion through oxygens on the α-carboxylate and α-alkoxyl groups, rather than through the carboxylate groups. The 13C NMR spectra, as well as a density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure study of the presumptive complexes, suggests that the associated α-hydroxyl proton can be displaced during complex formation. These findings indicate an alternative explanation for the observed changes in solubility as a function of hydrogen ion concentration, the displacement of protons from the citrate alkoxyl groups via metal binding. Removal of protons from the alkoxyl groups or hydrolysis of the central Th(IV) cannot be distinguished by thermodynamic measurements, however the species with the α-hydroxyl proton removed (i.e. ThOH(Cit)2 5- and Th(Cit)3 8-) would appear to better represent the microscopic binding. Apparent equilibrium constants for the solution phase reactions of these species and the hydrous thorium oxide have been calculated as a function of ionic strength.

Abstract:A computational model is developed to calculate thermodynamic phase equilibria in alkaline solutions of trisodium phosphate up to 100°C. A variety of data are used, including isopiestic measurements, freezing point data, vapor pressure data at 100°C, heat capacities, heats of dilution, and solubility measurements. Pitzer's ion-interaction treatment is used to model electrolyte solutions and many unknown parameters are determined from existing data through nonlinear least-squares fitting. Phase equilibria are determined by minimization of total Gibbs energy using a modification of the code SOLGASMIX. Results calculated using the model accurately predict experimental data.

Abstract:In this study, the saturated solubility of triethylamine hydrochloride (TEA·HCl) was determined using the static method in binary mixed solvents ((1-Butanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 1-Octanol) + dimethyl carbonate (DMC)) at temperatures ranging from 298.15 to 333.15 K and ambient pressure ( p = 0.1 MPa). Quantum chemistry calculations were performed to analyze the dissolution process among different solvents. Results showed that the obtained solubility data correlated well with five equations. Evaluation of solubility data was carried out by mean Average Relative Deviation (ARD) and Root-Mean-Square Deviation (RMSD). The findings indicated that the modified Apelblat model demonstrated the strongest correlation among the five models. The ARD and 10 4 RMSD were 1.39% and 2.61, respectively. Subsequently, the Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy of TEA·HCl dissolved in each mixed solvent can be determined by applying van't Hoff equations, revealing an endothermic and entropy-driven dissolution process. The experimental results indicated that the solubility of TEA·HCl in the selected binary solvents increased with the increasing temperature and decreased with the increasing molar fraction of DMC. The solubility sequence in various systems was explained in terms of the solvation free energy. The solubility values, model parameters, and thermodynamic properties of TEA·HCl in different mixed solvents can be obtained through experimentation, providing foundational support for its preparation, crystallization process, and further theoretical research.

Abstract:Trin-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) is a widely used extractant because of its high extractive ability. However, there is no systematic research on the thermodynamics of TOPO/n-dodecane in the separation of hydrochloric acid (HCl) from aqueous solution. In this study, the liquid liquid equilibrium (LLE) system (water + n-dodecane + TOPO + HCl) was investigated. Both the equimolar series and slope methods were used to determine the composition of the complex formed in the equilibrated organic phase. The form of the water molecules in the equilibrated organic phase was first investigated by the thermodynamic method. The thermodynamic model was established with the Pitzer equation for aqueous phase and both Margules and organic Pitzer equations for the organic phase. Two chemical equilibrium constants and their corresponding interaction parameters were regressed from experimental LLE data. The correlated results were in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, this model can also be used to predict the organic phase composition for this system. This confirmed that the thermodynamic model chosen was suitable for the extraction system.

Abstract:In this work, the solubility of Triethylamine hydrochloride (TEA·HCl) in Ethylene carbonate (EC), Propylene carbonate (PC), Dimethyl carbonate (DMC), Vinylene carbonate (VC), Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), N,N -dimethylformamide (DMF), Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), Methanol, 2-Propanol, 1-Octanol were measured from 293.15 K to 348.15 K under ambient pressure via a static method. Subsequently, the solubility data were correlated with the modified Apelblat Equation, the Van't Hoff Equation, the λh Equation, and the NRTL model. The average relative deviation (ARD), and root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) were introduced to evaluate the correlated data. The findings indicated that, out of the four models, the modified Apelblat model offered the highest correlation. Moreover, using the Van't Hoff Equation, we determined the Gibbs energy, enthalpy, and entropy of TEA·HCl dissolution in each solvent examined, all of which point to a dissolving process that is endothermic and entropy-driven. In the temperature range studied, the solubility of TEA·HCl in selected solvents increased with the rising temperature, and the solubility sequence of TEA·HCl at 298.15 K was Methanol > VC > 2-Propanol > EC > 1-Octanol > DMSO > PC > DMF > MIBK > DMC. In order to understand how TEA·HCl dissolves, density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate its molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and solvation free energy. In the meantime, the KAT-LSER model for studying the solvent impact has been presented. This work will provide valuable data references for the purification of TEA·HCl by crystallization.

Abstract:The solubility of the main group organometallics under inert atmosphere is of great importance for homogeneous process, while there's still no research reported on it. The solubilities of β-diketimine (1) (LH, L = HC(CMeNAr)2, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) in five selected pure organic solvents and aluminum hydrides (2) (LALH2) in three pure selected organic solvents were measured by the equilibrium method at temperature from 268.15 K to 313.15 K under a purified nitrogen atmosphere using Schlenk techniques or inside a glovebox. The results show that the solubility of compound 1 in pure solvents decrease according to the following order: tetrahydrofuran > toluene > n-hexane > ethanol > methanol, and the order of solubility of compound 2 is: tetrahydrofuran > toluene > n-hexane. The solubilities of those increase with the increase of temperature. The λh equation, Apelblat equation, Wilson model equation, NRTL model equation, and UNIQUAC model equation were applied to describe the measured system. The Wilson model equation, the Apelblat model were the best one for fitting the solubilities of compound 1 and 2, respectively. Furthermore, some thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy, Gibb's energy, and entropy have also been evaluated for the dissolution process.

Abstract:The third-phase behavior in extraction oxalic acid by trioctylamine (TOA) was investigated through measuring the solubility of oxalic acid in organic solvent.The result showed that n-octanol affected the dissolution of oxalic acid in the organic solvent apparently, and the solubility of oxalic acid, the complex of oxalic acid with TOA in the organic solvent and the extractability of oxalic acid with TOA increased with n-octanol concentration in the organic solvent. An obvious shift of the solubility of oxalic acid appeared when the oxalic acid concentration was larger than the saturated concentration of oxalic acid for TOA, which depended on the formation of complex dimer. Comparatively, the solubility of oxalic acid in organic phase for the experiment of extraction equilibrium was more than that of the organic solvent without water, and the water in the organic solvent was good for the dissolution of oxalic acid. Meanwhile, mathematical models were established to describe the solubility of oxalic acid and the complex, and the model parameters were obtained by fitting the experimental data.

Abstract:In this work, solubility data of 4-methoxybenzoic acid in eight pure organic solvents were measured by using a static gravimetric method at temperatures ranging from 273.15 K to 318.15 K under atmospheric pressure. The results showed that the solubility of 4-methoxybenzoic acid increased with the increasing of temperature in the investigated temperature range. The modified Apelblat equation, the λh equation, the NRTL model and the Wilson model were used to correlate the experimental solubility data of 4-methoxybenzoic acid in selected solvents and the calculated data showed that the Apelblat equation can give better correlation results. Meanwhile, Hansen solubility parameters analysis and density functional theory calculation of interaction energy were also used to investigate the mechanism of the solubility behavior of 4-methoxybenzoic acid in different solvents. Finally, the dissolution thermodynamic properties of 4-methoxybenzoic acid in different solvents, including Gibbs energy, entropy and enthalpy, were calculated based on the NRTL model and the experimental solubility data.

Abstract:This research reports the solubility and thermodynamic characterization of orotic acid (OA) when it reaches solid–liquid equilibrium in twelve pure solvents and four binary solvents. Solubility determinations were determined by HPLC in the temperature range of T = 278.15–323.15 K (DMSO at 293.15–323.15 K). The results exhibit that in pure solvents, the solubility order of OA is DMSO > DMF > THF > methanol > water > n-propanol > isopropanol > n-butanol > ethanol > acetone > methyl acetate > ethyl acetate. The solubility order in four binary solvents is DMF + ethyl acetate > THF + ethyl acetate > methanol + ethyl acetate > n-propanol + ethyl acetate. According to the solubility data, it can be found that the solubility of OA in the selected pure solvents is positively correlated with temperature. As the temperature gradually rises to 323.15 K, the mole fraction solubility of OA also reaches the maximum. In binary solvents, in addition to the influence of temperature, the increase in the mole fraction of DMF, THF, methanol and n-propanol also promote the dissolution of OA. The properties of the solute and the solvent were combined, the KAT-LSER model was used to investigate the solvation effect of OA in the dissolution process. According to the results, the solubility of OA mainly depends on the ability to accept the hydrogen bond of investigated solvents, and the proportion of the total solvent effect of it is 21.99%. Through the fitting analysis of five thermodynamic models (λh model, modified Apelblat model, CNIBS/R-K model, Jouyban-Acree model and SUN model), the maximum RAD and RMSD are 0.3082 and 0.2272, respectively, indicating that the experimental data is highly correlated with five models.

Abstract:Because of renewed research on thorium-based molten salt reactors, there is growing demand and interest in enhancing the knowledge of thorium chemistry both experimentally and theoretically. Compared with uranium, thorium has few chemical studies reported up to the present. Here we report the vibrationally resolved photoelectron imaging of the thorium monoxide anion. The electron affinity of ThO is first reported to be 0.707 +/- 0.020 eV. Vibrational frequencies of the ThO molecule and its anion are determined from Franck Condon simulation. Spectroscopic evidence is obtained for the two-electron transition in ThO-, indicating the strong electron correlation among the (7s sigma)(2)(6d delta)(1) electrons in ThO- and the (7s sigma)(2) electrons in ThO. These findings are explained by using quantum-chemical calculations including spin orbit coupling, and the chemical bonding of gaseous ThO molecules is analyzed. The present work will enrich our understanding of bonding capacities with the 6d valence shell.

Abstract:The solubilities, refractive indices, and pH values in the NaCl–Na2SO4–NaHCO3–H2O system at 323.15 K were determined by the isothermal solubility method. The dry-salt diagram of the system consists of three isothermal solubility curves saturated with two salts, one invariant point, and three crystallization regions of NaCl, Na2SO4, and NaHCO3. Two models were applied to predict the solubilities in the system based on the Pitzer model. Model I assumes that there is only one carbon species HCO3 – in the solution. Model II supposes that there are three carbon species corresponding to HCO3 –, CO3 2–, CO2(aq), and OH– in the solution. Both the computed solubilities with the two models were basically consistent with experimental results. The concentrations of HCO3 –, CO3 2–, CO2(aq), and OH– were calculated by model II. The dominant form of carbon species is HCO3 –, and the concentrations of CO3 2– and CO2(aq) in the sodium bicarbonate solution can be neglected. Model II can be used to describe the experimental pH values. The mean activity coefficients of NaCl, Na2SO4, and NaHCO3, osmotic coefficients, and water activities were also calculated with the Pitzer model.
