Effect of Polysaccharides from Spirulina Maxima on the Growth of Human Tumor Cell Lines

Abstract:Aim To observe the effects of intra- and extracellular-polysaccharides of Spirulina maxima (IPS,EPS) on the growth of five human tumor cell lines.Methods In vitro, one normal cell line(LO-2) and five tumor cell lines(HCT-8、U251、HeLa、SMMC7721、A549) were cultured with IPS or EPS at the final concentrations of 0(control),7.5,15,30, 60μg·mL -1 for 72 h. Following incubation, their sensibility was measured by SRB staining.Results The polysaccharides could significantly inhibit the growth of these five tumor cell lines in a dose-dependent manner,and there was weak effect on the growth of normal cell line. Conclusion The polysaccharide from Spirulina maxima has cytotoxicity to the tumor cells and may be a potential adjuvant to cancer therapy .
