Abstract:Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are forcing major changes in the production styles and configuration of manufacturing enterprises. Traditional centralized manufacturing systems are not able to meet these requirements. In recent years, the internet has become the worldwide information platform for the sharing of information and data. Information processing is an important challenge in an internet-based manufacturing environment, and must facilitate distribution, heterogeneity, autonomy and cooperation. This paper reviews recent trends and major developments in internet-based manufacturing. Broad categories of distributed information management are identified, based upon the development of computer integrated manufacturing, and the possible direction of future research is indicated.

Abstract:One of the key technologies for distributed integrated manufacturing systems is to realize automatic transmission and conversion of product data among distributed and heterogeneous systems like CAD, CAPP, CAM, CAE, etc. This paper presents an Internet-based framework of product data exchange and the architecture of the framework, which uses Internet/CORBA as the communication platform and XML as product data exchange language. This framework within which, conversion of other data formats to XML format is implemented by software agents, supports exchange of structured and non-structured product data.

Abstract:As part of two EU-Asia projects, Asia IT&C and Asia-Link, the research in Web-enable collaboration for design and manufacture has been carried out. The major Web/Internet techniques involved in the projects include a Web-enable environment for collaboration, online collaborative CAD/CAM, remote execution of large size programs (RELSP), and distributed product design. Two related techniques are presented in details: (1) a client-server approach for RELSP, where the Internet techniques involved include CORBA, Microsoft's Internet information server, Tomcat server, JDBC and ODBC; (2) Web-services supported collaborative CAD which enables geographically dispersed designers jointly conduct a design task in the way of speaking and seeing each other and instantaneously modifying the CAD drawing online.

Abstract:The technologies of mechanical computer aided engine ering(CAE) can reduce the time of products,so they play an improtant role in enhancing competitive power of products.But most of traditional CAE technol og ies have not exploited their advantages,because they are limited in environment of single machine of local area network(LAN).In this paper,an Internet based remote manufacturing analysis server system is presented,which combines traditi onal CAE and Internet technologies,provides an environment of design and ana lysis of mechanical products for remote users.In this system,real-time display o f products model on the net can be carried out with Java and VRML language.W ith ASP,ADO,SQL and ODBC technologies,the authors built knowledge-based remote query system for common technologies about mechanical industry.WebCRP technology is applied to realize network computing,which can share computer res ources and transfer some computing tasks.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to implementing agile design and manufacturing concepts by using Internet-based technology. The underlying philosophy of the approach is to use web-based design and manufacturing support systems as smart tools from which design and manufacturing customers can rapidly and responsively access the system's built-in design and manufacturing expertise. The approach is described in detail with application examples. The major issues in implementing the approach are discussed with particular reference to using Java programming, client-server technology and open computing of design and manufacturing requirements. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Fixture design is a complex and intuitive process. An efficient fixture design system is essential to cut costs and reduce product lead time. For networked manufacturing, the fixture design system must contain characteristics of rapid configuration designing, three-dimensional (3D) modelling, a completely standardized elements database, and it should be able to transfer information with various other systems. For the requirement of rapid configuration design, based on the analysis of the contents and characteristics of fixture design, a hybrid CBR/KBR (case-based reasoning/knowledge-based reasoning) fixture design method is proposed, with CBR as its core, KBR as its assistant and CBR as the support of case-adaptation process. Using design information, the designer can obtain a satisfactory subset of possible configuration designs of a fixture from the KBR process. Then the designer, using this subset and other information (via FIXCOD system), can obtain a similar design of the fixture from the retrieving case database, and then finally use the CBR adaptation technique to obtain the satisfied design of fixture. Networked information releasing technology is applied to part design in the computer aided design (CAD) system, and a new 3D modelling method is presented, driven by networked parameters. The data on the web are integrated into the CAD system to realize multithreading data exchange between the web information releasing system and the CAD system, which will make the CAD system obtain data from the web. Then networked 3D modelling will be realized by the driving of parameters from the web, and a proved model based on CATIA is provided. The internet and the use of extensible mark-up language (XML) as a file format provide a means for the transfer of information and knowledge between the various computer aided manufacturing (CAM) systems. The system has been implemented using Java and is based on a three-tier browser/server (B/S) architecture. This ensures the platform independent performance of the system.

Abstract:Collaborative product development needs the wider support of web manufacturing resources. A network-oriented resource service system and its key implementing technologies are presented in this paper. The manufacturing resource information is achieved through web search engine and processed with semantic description. The system also realizes the Internet-based cooperative development environment and web resource bases including web parts library as well as distributed knowledge repositories. Finally, an application case is introduced, which promotes the networked cooperative design and collaborative manufacturing of tire mould. It preliminarily demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of this Internet-based resource service pattern for product development.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) has a significant effect on the development of manufacturing technology. Therefore, according to the analysis of the challenges and opportunities faced by manufacturing industry, this study uses the assembly process of mechanical products as the research object and analyzes the characteristics of IoT-based manufacturing systems. To improve the interconnection, perception, efficiency, and intelligence of the assembly system, this study proposes the concept of IoT-enabled intelligent assembly system for mechanical products (IIASMP). The IIASMP framework, which is based on advanced techniques such as information and communication technology, sensor network, and radio-frequency identification, is then presented. Key technologies under this framework, including assembly resources identification, information interaction technology, multi-source data perception and fusion, intelligent assembly agent, and value-added data and dynamic self-adaptive optimization, are described. Finally, the current results of IIASMP are described in the case study. The proposed framework and methods aims to have an important reference value for applying the key technologies and be used widely in the intelligent manufacturing field.

Abstract:Traditionally, the technological design of sheet metal forming was limited to competing locally for customers. Currently, the connectivity of the Internet and World Wide Web allows manufacturers to offer their services globally. This research is focused on developing a new system where a remote user can design sheet metal forming process. The remote design system is run on the platform of the World Wide Web (WWW). It offers several advantages to the conventional stand-alone approach. Users are not limited to a specific platform or location, and maintenance of the system is considerably simplified. The Java programming, Web database, ASP technologies and Network computing are applied in the system. In the design environment, user can inquiry technical data, take some process analysis, download some vector drawings of standardized parts and components, optimization of blanking layouts etc.

Abstract:A framework of network support for utilization of integrated design over the Internet has been developed. The techniques presented are also applicable for intranet/extranet. The integrated design system was initially developed for local application in a single site. With the network support, geographically dispersed designers can collaborate a design task throughout the total design process, quickly respond to clients’ requests and enhance the design agility. In this paper, after a brief introduction of the integrated design system, the network support framework is presented, followed by a description of two key techniques involved: Java Servlet approach for remotely executing a large program, and online CAD collaboration.
