Abstract:A new nonchalcogenide inorganic blue laser recordable disk was successfully developed using a Pd-based metallic glass, which transformed from the amorphous state to the crystalline state upon laser irradiation. The optical properties and thermal properties of the Pd-based metallic glass thin film were studied. A recordable optical disk was prepared with a simple disk structure, which included only a dielectric layer and a recording layer, for an optical system based on a blue-violet laser diode and an objective lens with a high numerical number (NA) of objective lens of 0.85. The recording performance of the blue laser recordable disk was evaluated. The readout stability and archival lifetime were verified for the blue laser recordable disk.

Abstract:A nonchalcogenide inorganic blu-ray super-resolution near-field optical disk was successfully developed using an Al-based metallic glass as the recording layer. Data were recorded based on the large reflectivity change obtained during transformation from the amorphous state to the crystalline state upon laser irradiation. The optical and thermal properties of the Al90Ni3Gd7 metallic glass thin film were studied. The crystallization and melting temperatures were higher and more thermally stable than that of conventionally used Ge2Sb2Te5 chalcogenide phase-change recording material. Al90Ni3Gd7 metallic glass also demonstrated fast phase-change response to blue laser. Dynamic recording performance of this new structure showed good carrier-to-noise ratio and readout stability.
Organic Materials for Recordable Blue Laser Optical Storage

Abstract:High-density Optical storage technology which uses a 405 nm laser and an objective lens of high numerical aperture (NA)of 0.85 is developing rapidly due to its high capacity over 23 GB on a single layer of a 120mm-diameter optical disc and great commercial demands. New storage media have been the bottleneck in high density optical storage. Organic material can be an attractive optical storage medium with various advantages, such as good sensitivity, easy fabrication, reasonable cost and structural flexibility, etc, compared with inorganic storage material. Efforts have been made to seek for new organic storage materials with high performance matching the 405 nm short wavelength laser. In this paper, recent progresses in developing organic materials as recording media for high density blue laser optical storage are presented. The recording mechanism of recordable dye layer and basic requirements for the dye materials are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:All-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have been effectively incorporated in the three-dimensional ordered structure of blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) to stabilize the BPLCs. Uniform dispersion, reduced phase transition temperature, widened BP temperature range, dynamic and fast electro-optical response and static optical display of selective reflection mode and photoluminescence mode have been confirmed with a given concentration of PQDs. Such a novel strategy of assembling all-inorganic PQDs in BPLCs shows favorable prospects for wide-range and near room temperature BPLCs, responsive BPLCs, multifunctional display materials and tunable bandgap lasers.

Abstract:Tetrafluoropropanol soluble, metal(II) hydrazone complexes derived from alkyl substituted isoxazole and barbituric acid were synthesized and evaluated as suitable optical recording materials for the recordable blu-ray disc system. The behaviour and relationships of the absorption, reflectivity and optical constants (complex refractive indices N=n+ik) for different metal(II) complexes in spin-coated films were discussed. In addition, the important thermal decomposition data of these metal(II) complexes from simultaneous TG–DSC analyses were presented as well. As an example of the utility of dye-based blu-ray recording media, we used the nickel(II) hydrazone complex thin film as recording layer for static optical recording performance test. Results showed that high reflectivity contrast over 45% and durable information marks (after repeatedly reading 20,000 times) could be achieved under optimum laser writing power and pulse width conditions, indicative of producing a very promising optical recording medium for blu-ray disc-recordable system.

Abstract:The requirements for the recording materials include excellent thin-film optical characteristic,high recording sensitivity,favorable photo-thermal stability,and good film spin-coating performance.The organic compounds such as cyanine,macrocyclic azotic compound,azo,metal chelate,benzoheterocycle dye,have been researched as the recording materials for blue light recordable optical disc.The macrocyclic azotic metal complex is indicated to be an important direction from the analysis of the growing route of dyes for CD-R and DVD±R.Research on dyes for blue-ray disc could make China to be in the leading position of the new generation recordable format.

Abstract:We have developed a new inorganic write-once optical disk for an optical recording system with a numerical aperture of 0.85 and a 405 nm blue-violet laser diode. The recording layer is composed of multi-layered structure of alternating Mg-based alloy layer and Si layer. Our experimental results showed that the recording sensitivity of the optical disk is strongly dependent on the stack structure of the recording layer, which can be optimized through adjusting the number of the component layers. Dynamic experiment results showed that the write-once optical disk has a low-to-high polarity and jitter value below 7.5% can be achieved at both 1 x and 2 x speeds. Effects of the multi-layered recording layer structure and the low-to-high polarity on recording performance are discussed.

Abstract:A new azo metal chelate thin film has been developed for digital versatile disk recordable (DVD-R) by means of a spin-coating. The absorption of the film matches very well with the wavelength of the GaAlInP semiconductor diode laser (0.63similar to0.65 mum). Thermal property of azo metal chelate indicates that the rapid decomposition of the dye happens in the narrow temperature zone. The optical recording performance of the azo nickel chelate thin film shows that high reflectivity contrast (34%) can be obtained at low writing power and short writing pulse-width using He-Ne laser (632.8nm) irradiation. The average jitter of 5-in DVD-R disk after recorded with optimistic power on DVD-RT650 tester is less than 12%.

Abstract:With the development for 20 years, the research and application of optical recording materials for the three-generation recordable optical discs, infrared light CD-R, red light DVD R and blue light BD-R/HD DVD-R, are summarized in this review. The developments of organic dyes as optical recording materials, cyanine, macrocyclic azotic compound, azo-metal complex, metal chelate, and benzoheterocycle dye are introduced. The material properties, including thin-film optical characteristic, recording sensitivity, photo-thermal stability, and film spin-coating performance are commented. The relations of the characteristics of recording materials for each generation optical discs and the corresponding optical disc system are summarized. The excellent properties of macrocyclic azotic metal complex, especially in high photo-thermal stability and favorable recording sensitivity, are discussed. Base on its successful application in the former two generation recordable optical discs as recording materials and the research in our lab, the macrocyclic azotic metal complex should be an imprtant direction of development as the recording material for high density blue light recordable optical disc.

Abstract:Smooth thin films of three metal(II) complexes were prepared by spin-coating process from 2,2,3,3- tetrafluoro-1-propanol solution and characterized atomic force microscopy (AFM). In order to examine their possible use as blu-ray recording media, the spin-coated films of the metal(II) complexes on K9 glass substrate with a silver reflective layer were evaluated by static optical recording testing system with a 406.7 nm laser. The morphologies of the thin films are smooth and have a root mean square surface roughness (RMS) of 0.34-0.41 nm with in 5 μ × 5 μ area. The results of the static optical recording test demonstrate that high reflectivity contrast (> 54 %) can be obtained at an optimum laser writing power and pulse width with high-to-low polarity, and the recording marks are durable even after 15000 times readout. In addition, the recording marks on the cobalt (II) complex thin film are very clear and circular, and their size can reach 200 nm or less.

Abstract:Lithium niobate crystal triply doped with zirconium, ruthenium and iron was grown by conventional Czochralski method and its nonvolatile storage characteristics were investigated by means of two-wavelength technology, where blue and red beam were used as recording and readout light, respectively. In oxidized Zr:Ru:Fe:liNbO3 crystal, short response time of 9.1s and high recording sensitivity of 0.92cm/J were demonstrated, together with high fixed diffraction efficiency of 44.9% maintained. These excellent properties were attributed to the elimination of intrinsic defects by ZrO2 doping and effective excitation of electrons by blue light. Our experimental results indicated this doped LiNbO3 crystal was an outstanding medium for holographic storage applications.

Abstract:Blue-laser optical recording is considered as the third generation of optical storage technology.The development of key technology of blue-laser optical storage is described.Two models named as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD were listed and compared.It is generally considered that HD-DVD is suitable for PC application;Blu-Ray is better for video disk recording.Some extended technologies of blue-laser optical recording such as multi-level,super-resolution near-field structure and multi-wavelength technologies are reviewed.The prospective development is discussed.
Optical and thermal properties of nickel(II) hydrazone complex for recordable blu-ray storage

Abstract:A nickel(II) hydrazone complex was synthesized in order to obtain a suitable optical recording medium for the new generation recordable blu-ray disk. Smooth thin films of the nickel(II) hydrazone complex were prepared by using the spin-coating method. Absorption and reflectance spectra of the thin films were evaluated in the wavelength 300-700 nm. Thermal properties of the nickel(II) complex were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Optical constants (complex refractive indices N=n+ik) and thickness of the thin film, prepared on single-crystal silicon substrate, were investigated on a rotating analyzer-polarizer scanning ellipsometer in the wavelength 285-705 nm. In addition, in order to examine its possible use as a blu-ray recording medium, the spin-coated film of the nickel(II) complex was prepared on K9 glass substrate with a silver reflective layer, and was studied by static optical recording testing system with a 406.7 nm laser. It is found that the absorption spectra of the thin film has an strong absorption band in the wavelength region 360-420 nm and a moderate absorbance at the 405 nm side, which indicates that the absorption of the film is well matched with the laser wavelength of the 405 nm. The reflectance spectra show that a high reflectivity of the thin film at 405 nm wavelength can be obtained by an optimum film thickness and an appropriate metal reflective layer. The thin film of the nickel(II) complex gives a high n value of 1.62 and a low k value of 0.33, corresponding to the wavelength of the blue laser of 405 nm. Measurements of the thermal properties show that the nickel(II) complex holds a high thermal stability (∼ 300°C) and a sharp weight loss which are helpful to fabricate a small and sharp recording mark edge. The results of the static optical recording test, using the nickel(II) complex thin film as the recording layer, demonstrate that high reflectivity contrast (>50 %) can be obtained at an optimum laser writing power and pulse width. In addition, the recording marks are durable even after 20000 times readout. These preliminary results indicate that the nickel(II) hydrazone complex has great potential application for high-density discrecordable system at wavelength of the 405 nm. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Abstract:Up‐to‐date optical storage technology calls for large memory capacity, expanded storage dimension, rewritable capability, low cost, and high energy efficiency, which poses stringent requirements on the storage medium. In this study, a novel BaSi2O5:Eu2+,Nd3+ photostimulated luminescence (PSL) phosphor is developed and then made into phosphor‐in‐glass (PiG) storage medium. Upon ultraviolet light irradiation (write‐in), the generated electrons are captured by the traps, which can be further released by thermal or near‐infrared laser stimulation (read‐out). An insightful investigation is carried out to establish the relationship between trap properties and PSL performance. Demonstration application confirmed the intensity‐multiplexing optical information (including the designed bar code, quick response (QR) code, graphic patterns, and binary data) encoding/decoding. Remarkably, BaSi2O5:Eu2+,Nd3+ PSL PiG show excellent erasable‐rewritable capability thanking to the admirable anti‐ultraviolet property in glass host, as well as good optical data retention ability owing to the spatially isolated deep traps. Hopefully, the present work can push forward the research progress of PSL material and its practical application in optical storage.

Abstract:3D optical storage, spatially expanding storage capacity, is regarded as an effective and economical way to break the diffraction limit of the conventional 2D optical storage. In this study, a new kind of 3D optical storage medium, i.e., vanadium ions (V5+) doped sodium borate glass, is developed, showing intriguing spatially-selected photochromism (PC) upon laser driven excitation. Significantly, a brand-new PC mechanism of V5+-aggregation regulated by localized optical basicity (OB) of glass is proposed and demonstrated. The developed PC glass is responsive to a low-price desktop-level mini-laser to encode optical information, yields unique twofold decoding modes in bright- and dark-fields, and shows good data erasibility. 3D volumetric optical storage with a memory density of approximate to 480 Mbit cm-3 is realized with the aid of an advanced femtosecond laser micro-machining system. The findings suggest a novel design approach to fabricate 3D PC glass in terms of manipulating the scale of optical basicity in glass, hopefully stimulating the development of new multi-dimensional PC optical storage media. A new strategy to design photochromic glass as 3D optical storage medium is proposed, following a principle of regulating local optical basicity of glass during the interaction with a laser.image
Blu-ray Type Super-Resolution Near-Field Phase Change Disk with In2Ge8Sb85Te5 Mask Layer

Abstract:A new mask layer of In2Ge8Sb85Te5 was developed and used on super-resolution near-field phase change optical disks (super-RENS). The thermal and optical properties of the mask layer were investigated. Thermal analysis showed higher crystallization temperature and activation energy but lower melting temperature than Ge2Sb2Te5 phase change material. Ultra-fast crystallization within 30 ns was obtainable using a pulsed high-power laser beam of 405 nm wavelength. The recording performance of the new structure was evaluated on an optical recording system with a numerical aperture of 0.85 and a 405 nm blue-violet laser diode. Carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 32, 25, 15, and 10 dB were obtained for 80, 50, 40, and 30 nm mark trains, respectively. Readout thermal stability of 20,000 cycles was realized for 80 nm mark trains. These performances were by far the highest obtainable for blu-ray aperture-type super-RENS disk.
Thermal and optical properties of cyanine dye for high density digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R)

Abstract:A new cyanine thin film has been prepared for the high-density digital versatile disc-recordable (DVD-R) by means of a spin-coating process. The effects of the optical and thermal properties of the cyanine dye on recording characteristics were studied. The rapid decomposition of the cyanine dye in a narrow temperature range, which critical to the clear mark edges, was shown. A steep absorption edge at the 635 nm is crucial to high reflectivity. The optical recording performance of the cyanine dye thin film shows that high reflectivity contrast (48%) can be obtained at low writing power and narrow writing pulse-width using He-Ne laser (632.8 nm) irradiation. The carrier to noise ratio (CNR) of single layer disk is greater than 40 dB at travelling rate of 2.4 m/s.

Abstract:A new azo nickel chelate thin film has been developed for short wavelength write-once optical recording by a spin-coating process. Thermal property of the dye was studied by thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA). The azo nickel chelate begins to decompose at temperature 295.6degreesC, which is 44degreesC above that of azo, and rapidly decomposes in the narrow temperature range. A dynamic optical recording test on the disc made of this dye indicated that the CNR of written signals was more than 43dB at low writing power and short writing pulse-width using Ar+ laser (514nm) irradiation in a wide scan velocity range.
