Abstract:Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as a new paradigm to achieving a practical balance between Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Hybrid Optical Networks (HON) that combines OCS and OBS has emerged to grant the OBS network the ability to support connection-oriented applications. Although efficient in terms of reducing the burst loss probability as well as improving the overall network performance, it provides a limited degree of Quality of Service (QoS). What we mean by QoS is the capability of a network to provide a guaranteed level of availability while satisfying strict limits on delay. In this paper, we propose new hybrid architecture for OBS networks. The proposed architecture qualifies the OBS network to support different classes of QoS.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty IP traffic over optical WDM networks. It provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS is mainly hampered at network nodes by burst contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of OBS networks. A leading source of contention is the congestion at congested links where a limited number of wavelengths are shared by a lot of bursts. These congested links are stemming from burst routing algorithms. In this paper, we studied on routing path competition phenomenon. We proposed a differentiated QoS aware multipath routing algorithm for OBS networks. This algorithm is evaluated through extensive numerical studies over a typical topology--the 14-node NSFnet. Results show that it outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of burst blocking probability and link utilization.

Abstract:A new scheme for optical burst switching (OBS) networks under self-similar traffic is proposed in this paper. Self-similar traffic is classified into two types of payload by partial pre-deflection edge node router, and the two types of payload are transferred using different routing algorithms - least hop first routing and shortest path first routing respectively, in order to properly utilize network resources and avoid burst contention at the core node switch. Simulation results indicate that the new scheme performs better than fixed routing and alternative routing for OBS networks under self-similar traffic. Furthermore, the implement of this scheme is feasible and easy, which makes OBS technology more applicable in network engineering (NE).

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising technology which is able to well support bursty traffic and is also technically mature. One critical issue in OBS networks is burst contention. Several methods have been proposed to solve contention such as wavelength converters and fiber delay lines. Among those methods, routing is relatively cost-effective and technically tractable and has been extensively researched. A framework for evaluation the strength of this method is presented in this paper. As routing is a fundamental issue in optical networks and not only confined to OBS, the framework is applicable to a class of connectionless and non-buffer all-optical networks. Through comprehensive analysis of the relation between the total traffic load offered to the network and the traffic load on each link together with some mathematical skills, a lower bound on the burst loss probability is figured out. Extending it by minimizing the lower bound over all reasonable topologies, another lower bound is worked out. With the help of the two lower bounds, comprehensive prospect on the effectiveness of routing and network topologies in reducing the burst loss probability is shown for the first time to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:A class-aware routing scheme is proposed in this paper for OBS networks providing offset-time-based differentiated services (DiffServ). To unravel the structure of the routing problem, mathematical programming formulations are utilized. An optimization model for two-class OBS networks is presented and studied in particular. The objective is to minimize the burst loss probability over the entire network for both traffic classes. The effectiveness of the routing model is evaluated via illustrative examples based on programming techniques. Numerical results show that compared with traditional class-oblivious routing schemes, class-aware routing further reduces the burst loss probability of multiple classes especially when the network load is light or moderate.

Abstract:The most critical challenge in the design of burst optical networks is burst contention, which occurs when multiple bursts contend for the same wavelength on the same link at a certain node simultaneously. The techniques to address this problem include contention resolutions as well as contention avoidance. In contention resolution approaches, conflicts are resolved in wavelength, time or space domain when they have occurred. In contention avoidance approaches, bursty traffic is distributed through routes that are dynamically re-computed or selected according to network congestion status to avoid potential conflicts in advance. Current dynamic routing schemes for OBS are all based on global information, resulting in bandwidth consumption at signaling channels and a considerable delay between network status change and adaptation of the routing tables. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic routing selection mechanism based on local statistical information, namely dynamic alternative routing, to balance load and avoid contentions in OBS networks. In this mechanism, a route is dynamically selected from the primary path and the alternative route for an incoming burst. The simulation results show the blocking probability of the proposal is significantly reduced and load balancing is efficiently achieved compared to the general OBS.

Abstract:The resource contention problem is critical in Just-Enough-Time (JET) based optical burst switching (OBS) networks. Although deflection routing (DR) reduces the contention probability in some degree, it does not give much improvement under heavy traffic load. This paper analyzed the inducement causing contention in OBS networks, and proposed Resource Information Sharing Enhancement (RISE) scheme. Theoretical analysis shows that this scheme achieves shorter length of the detour path than normal DR. We simulated this scheme on both full mesh network and practical 14-node NSFNET. The simulation results show that it gives at best 2 orders magnitude improvement in reducing the burst contention probability over its previous routing approaches.

Abstract:The combination of deflection routing and burst retransmission is an attractive scheme for resolving the burst contention problem in Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks. Most of previous works on hybrid schemes use simulation approach to prove the efficicency. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for obtaining the overall burst loss ratio of an OBS network that take into account deflection and retransmission togetther. The accuracy of the proposed model is confirmed by extensive simulations upon the NS-2 simulator and two typical networks topologies. Numerical results obtained from the model indicate that at low traffic load, the hybrid scheme significantly outperforms the conventional deflection routing and burst retransmission schemes in terms of overall burst loss ratio. However, at high traffic load, the simple hybrid scheme performs even worse than the other schemes.

Abstract:A novel contention resolution scheme for optical burst switching (OBS) networks is proposed. Traffic payload is classified into two types at the edge nodes, and they are transferred through the core nodes using two different routing algorithms-least-hop first routing and shortest-path first routing, respectively, leading to balanced traffic loads among fiber links. By using this contention resolution scheme, active avoidance of burst contention is achieved. Performance evaluation and simulation results indicate that the new scheme outperforms the commonly used shortest-path first routing and is robust under both Poisson and self-similar traffic. Furthermore, the new scheme can provide quality-of-service (QOS) differentiation when used with wavelength conversion, and the implementation of this scheme is easy, which makes OBS technology more applicable in network engineering. Abstract:Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is considered as an efficient switching technique for building the next generation optical Internet. An offset-time-based scheme has recently been proposed in order to provide quality-of-service (QoS) in OBS networks. Unfortunately, the proposed service differentiation has several problems. In this paper, we propose a burst-length-based QoS scheme cooperate with Void-Filling, which is less complex and more valuable than existing offset-time-based scheme. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of our burst-length-based scheme provisioning within OBS networks in terms of burst loss probability.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high-speed, flexible, and transparent technology. It is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty IP traffic over optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. OBS technology facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. It provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, there are still a lot of challenges, one of which is burst contention. Owing to the fact that random access memory like buffering is not available in the optical domain at present, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Many contention resolutions are proposed. The major contention resolutions in literature are wavelength conversion, fiber delay lines, and deflecting routing. In this paper, a new data burst scheduling scheme, called group scheduling based on control-packet batch processing (GSCBP) was proposed to reduce burst contention. Like transmission control protocol, GSCBP has a batch processing window. Control packets which located in the batch processing window are batch processed. A heuristic scheduling algorithm arranges the relevant bursts' route based on the processing result and the network resource. A new node architecture supporting group scheduling was presented. The GSCBP algorithm is combined with wavelength converter and/or fiber delay lines which is shared by some data channels. Meanwhile, an extended open shortest path first (E-OSPF) routing strategy was proposed for OBS. Both GSCBP and E-OSPF are introduced into 14-node national science foundation network by means of simulations. The ETE delay, burst blocking probability, as well as burst dropping probability were attained. Results show that the GSBCP lead to the higher-priority traffic drop rate decrease one order of magnitude, if drop rate and ETE delay of lower priority traffic is sacrificed.

Therefore, many contention resolutions are proposed, such as fiber delay lines, wavelength conversion, and deflection routing, etc. These resolutions are focus on the node design. They are increase the complexity of the node. But they can not always take some significant effect and make notable gains in cost-efficiency. In this paper, unlike these schemes are focus on the node design, we proposed a novel link architecture named dual-fiber-link (DFL) for OBS networks. We also proposed a relative media access control protocol. We have developed some scenarios to evaluate this architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed link can decrease packet drop probability in terms of orders of magnitude in OBS networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.
A Novel Scheme for Optical Burst Switching Networks under Self-Similar Traffic and Wavelength Continuity Constraint

Abstract:Many recent studies have convincingly demonstrated that network traffic exhibits a noticeable self-similar nature, and most studies of optical burst switching (OBS) networks are under a fundamental assumption that full wavelength conversion is available throughout the network. In practice, however, economic and technical considerations are likely to dictate a more limited and sparse deployment of wavelength converters in the optical network. Therefore, we present a novel scheme for OBS Networks, called logical cascaded private subnet with start wavelength assignment policy. We define the concept of canoe relative to cluster in self-similar traffic, and introduce a new device named payload segregator at the edge node as a gateway to the OBS core node. According to the changes in the edge node framework, we put forward the concept of cluster private subnet and canoe private subnet in OBS core node correspondingly. Due to the absence of wavelength conversion capabilities, we assign start wavelengths to both private subnets before network start operation. A new start wavelength assignment policy is proposed for the absence of wavelength conversion capabilities in the core node of OBS Networks. The analytical results clearly show that logical cascaded private subnet scheme can yield better performance in terms of block probability than traditional OBS Networks, and logical cascaded private subnet with start wavelength assignment policy has the potential to improve the block probability by more than one order of magnitude compared with traditional OBS Networks, helping reduce the performance gap with respect to full wavelength conversion.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new resource sharing scheme for double-link failures in survivable optical mesh networks. With 100% protection guarantee, our proposed scheme can accommodate reasonable contention for sharing resources and minimize backup capacity for reservation. Simulation results show that this sharing scheme can achieve satisfied performance in terms of resource utilization ratio and blocking probability.

Abstract:This paper investigated the problem of multicast in optical burst switching(OBS) network with sparse splitting capability.It proposed a novel scheme,which named preemptive priority based tree share scheme(PPTSS).The algorithm assembled sessions with same splitting nodes as a burst,and then used preemptive priority to reserve wavelength resources for the burst.Compared with traditional multicast scheme,the proposed scheme could further decrease the blocking probability and improve the bandwidth resource utilization ratio.

Abstract:A crucial issue in optical burst switching (OBS) networks is burst loss caused by resource contention. As a result, many methods are currently being proposed to reduce burst loss rate. These methods can be summed up into two categories: burst scheduling algorithms and contention resolutions. Both categories of methods can reduce burst loss rate to a certain degree. However, to make OBS to become a viable solution, the burst loss rate needs to be further reduced. Furthermore, almost all methods ignore the fact that an unfortunately scheduled, locally generated single-hop burst could block a number of future incoming transit bursts, though the burst just travels to its next downstream node. This phenomenon becomes more evident when links are heavily loaded in mesh OBS networks. To eliminate contention caused by single-hop traffic completely, this paper proposes a novel transfer mode called packet calking by differentiating between single-hop traffic from multihop traffic for OBS networks. An analysis model is developed to evaluate the performance of packet calking. Theoretical results are validated through extensive simulations in both ring and mesh networks. These results show that packet calking outperforms the transfer mode without packet calking in terms of burst loss rate and link utilization.

Abstract:With fiber being cheaper and cheaper, the core fiber bandwidth utilization is not the key factor of the network, how to use the huge bandwidth flexibly and efficiently is one of the hot topics of optical networks. Optical burst switching (OBS) is the best choice to statistically use the optical resources, OBS based transparent optical network attracting attentions. We proposed an integrated policy by using dual fiber links server model along with traffic spacing mechanism (TSM) by address differentiating and transmitting those traffics between adjacent nodes by IP directly, the others by OBS mechanism. The theoretical results show that this method can improve network performance and be practically used in fields.

We proposed a novel networking policy by using dual fiber links server model along with traffic spacing mechanism (TSM) by address differentiation, the transmitting IP directly in optical domain for traffic data between physically adjacent nodes, with no necessary burst assembling (NABAN). The theoretical results show that this method can improve network performance and be practically used in fields.
