Abstract:In order to assess image coding quality objectively and accurately, based on importance measures and fuzzy integral, a new objective assessment approach for image coding quality is proposed in this paper. The first step of this approach is: firstly the errors at edge, texture and flat-region are computed separately, then the errors are assessed according to the assessment function, lastly a global evaluation is obtained based on the importance measure on edge, texture and flat-region. The second step of this approach is: firstly a importance measure is established depending on the positions where the errors occur, then a subtle evaluation is acquired by fuzzy integral on all of the errors which occur at the pixels of the image. The third step of this approach is: a final evaluation is given based on the evaluations obtained in the previous two steps. Experimental results show that from the viewpoint of correlation coefficient, the proposed approach is obviously better than the others such as PQS、PSNR、WMSE.

Abstract:Image quality assessment is an important issue addressed in various image processing applications such as image/video compression and image reconstruction. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) with the L2-metric is commonly used in objective image quality assessment. However, the measure does not agree very well with human visual perception in many cases. In this paper, a fuzzy image metric (FIM) is defined based on M. Sugeno's (1974) fuzzy integral. This new objective image metric, which is to some extent a proper evaluation from the viewpoint of the judgement procedure, is closely approximates the subjective mean opinion score (MOS) with a correlation coefficient of about 0.94, as compared to 0.82 obtained using PSNR.

Abstract:Based on characteristics of HVS (human visual system), a new objective image quality assessment is proposed. In this method, the information of luminance, frequency and edge is used to predict the quality of compressed images. Multi-linear regression analysis is used to integrate these information. Experimental results show that this new image quality assessment closely approximates human subjective tests such as MOS (mean opinion score) with high Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.970 and 0.976, which are of significant improvement over some typical objective image quality estimations such as PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio).

Abstract:Evaluation of image quality still remains important and difficult. This paper proposes a novel objective approach, named Weighted Gradient Metric (WGM). This model measures the gradient similarity of the images, and takes regional weight into consideration. WGM is tested on a series of images under several typical degradation models. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method gain better performance and well matches human visual system (HVS).

Abstract:Image quality assessment (IQA) is a crucial technique in perceptual image/video coding, because it is not only a ruler for performance evaluation of coding algorithms but also a metric for ratio-distortion optimization in coding. In this paper, inspired by the fact that distortions of both global and local information influence the perceptual image quality, we propose a novel IQA method that inspects these information in the spatial frequency components of the image. The distortion of the global information mostly existing in low spatial frequency is measured by a rectified mean absolute difference metric, and the distortion of the local information mostly existing in high spatial frequency is measured by SSIM. These two measurements are combined using a newly proposed abruptness weighting that describes the uniformity of the residual image. Experimental results on LIVE database show that the proposed metric outperforms the SSIM and achieves performance competitive with the state-of-the-art metrics.

Abstract:Moving cast shadow detection is important yet difficult problem in video analysis and applications. A novel shadow detection method is presented, which base on the fuzzy measure and fuzzy integral theory. This method integrates the extended Local Binary Pattern texture feature and color feature by using the choquet integral, where color similarity, texture similarity and feature importance degree are measured respectively between pixels in current and background images. The Experimental results on different video sequences show that the proposed method owns much higher performance of shadow detection than other methods. 1548-7741/Copyright © 2011 Binary Information Press.

Abstract:Zhou Wang proposed the Structural Similarity theory (MSSIM), Guan-Hao Chen proposed a marginal texture distorts theory on it. Jian-Xin Pang proposed a method of image quality assessment based on the energy of structural distortion (ESD). Because the theory isn't applied directly on the video field and it don't think over HVS. So we propose a method of video quality assessment based on the sensitive region. First of all, we get the energy of structural distortion (ESD)based on the block. Then, we get the weighted factor according to the structure information and the movement information. Finally, we get the final results according to the HVS. From the last results, we know that the weighting method base on the ESD (WESD) is better than the PSNR, MSSIM and ESSIM on the compress losing, smooth losing and noise losing.

Abstract:In this paper, an implementation of full reference image quality assessment based on independent component analysis (ICA) is proposed. ICA is a method for signal processing which is used here as a mathematical tool for image feature extraction. In addition to greyscale-based algorithm, we also develop an approach based on hue, saturation and value (HSV), which treats color information as an important part of the evaluation of image quality, in order to realize a more comprehensive simulation of human visual system (HVS) and thus achieve better consistency with subjective image quality assessment. Our experiment is conducted on MATLAB platform, and the results demonstrate that the HSV-based algorithm gives better performance for most distortion types such as JPEG, white noise and fast fading in comparison with some other common-used full reference image quality assessment algorithms. Besides, the influence of the size of sample windows on algorithm performance is also explored in the experiment.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new integrative method to measure fingerprint image quality on the basis of proportion of fore- ground,Gabor filter eigenvalue with 8 different orientations and core point position.Firstly,an image is divided into manyω×ωblocks,and several features used to determine the proportion of foreground are computed by every pixel orientation in each block; Secondly,Gabor features of each block are computed and the variance of 8 Gabor features is used to determine the Gabor filter eigenvalue;Then,core point position is determined by orientation changes between neighbouring blocks;Lastly,weighted average of above three assessment factors is used to determine fingerprint image quality.Experimental results demonstrate that the integrative method is accurate and efficient to estimate fingerprint image quality.

Abstract:As traditional pixel -difference statistics and structural similarity (SSIM)cannot well reflect subjective e-valuation results,a novel image quality assessment method based on local information distortion modeling is pro-posed.According to some characteristics of human visual system (HVS),models are established for the pixel gray dis-tortion,local contrast distortion and local structure distortion.Taking local variance as weight,the final image quality assessment metric is obtained.The experiments on the LIVE database indicate that the proposed method has high pre-diction accuracy and consistency on distortion types like jp2k,jpeg,gblur and fastfading,and it is better than the SSIM method.Also,a fairly good prediction result is achieved for wn distortion type.Compared with other assessment meth-ods,the proposed method has good predictive performance,and its calculation is quite simple,and it is more consistent with subjective evaluation.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new image quality assessment framework which is based on color perceptual model. By analyzing the shortages of the existing image quality assessment methods and combining the color perceptual model, the general framework of color image quality assessment based on the S-CIELAB color space is presented. The S-CIELAB color model, a spatial extension of CIELAB, has an excellent performance for mimicking the perceptual processing of human color vision. This paper incorporates excellent color perceptual characteristics model with the geometrical distortion measurement to assess the image quality. First, the reference and distorted images are transformed into S-CIELAB color perceptual space, and the transformed images are evaluated by existing metric in three color perceptual channels. The fidelity factors of three channels are weighted to obtain the image quality. Experimental results achieved on LIVE database II shows that the proposed methods are in good consistency with human subjective assessment results.

Abstract:In this paper, a new effective and reliable objective video evaluation model is proposed based on fuzzy synthetic judgment. Firstly, the essential design of the model is described systemically. Then the fuzzy membership functions of all factors which affect compressed video quality are determined. And the factor weights are also estimated by approximate algorithm. This model highlights a comprehensive evaluation by taking account of multiple properties of the compressed video which affect the whole video sequence, such as quality, fluency and motion info. On the other side, this model has well capability of compatibility with other evaluation models or standards. Simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the fuzzy objective video quality evaluation model especially in comprehensive judgment of the whole video.

Abstract:Image fusion is to reduce uncertainty and minimize redundancy in the output while maximizing relevant information from two or more images of a scene into a single composite image that is more informative and is more suitable for visual perception or processing tasks like medical imaging, remote sensing, concealed weapon detection, weather forecasting, biometrics etc. Image fusion combines registered images to produce a high quality fused image with spatial and spectral information. The fused image with more information will improve the performance of image analysis algorithms used in different applications. In this paper, we proposed a fuzzy logic method to fuse images from different sensors, in order to enhance the quality and compared proposed method with two other methods i.e. image fusion using wavelet transform and weighted average discrete wavelet transform based image fusion using genetic algorithm (here onwards abbreviated as GA) along with quality evaluation parameters image quality index (IQI), mutual information measure (MIM), root mean square error (RMSE), peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), fusion factor (FF), fusion symmetry (FS) and fusion index (FI) and entropy. The results obtained from proposed fuzzy based image fusion approach improves quality of fused image as compared to earlier reported methods, wavelet transform based image fusion and weighted average discrete wavelet transform based image fusion using genetic algorithm.

Abstract:Image quality assessment methods quantify the quality of an image that is highly correlated with human-perceived image quality. In this paper, the image quality is represented by the image patches that are selected by applying the spatial correlation of pixel-pairs. The quality image patches are selected from the database LIVE2, and quality feature detectors are learned by running the FastICA algorithm on the patches. Then being quality features, the independent component coefficients are found out from each quality image patch. A Hash lookup table is built by the binarization of the independent component coefficients of quality image patches, and the Hash table can be indexed by the binary code of the independent component coefficients of a tested image. The results of proposed approach were compared with results from other methods of image quality assessment and with the subjective image quality evaluated scores. And the experimental results expressed that the proposed metric method of no-reference image quality assessment could accurately measure the distorted degree of images. The Pearson linear correlation coefficient (PCC) achieves a high value 0.949 for the accuracy of evaluating results. The Spearman order correlation (SRC) achieves a high value 0.996 for the monotonicity of evaluating results. And the root mean square error (RMSE) is 5.917 for the subjective consistency of evaluating results. Extra evaluating aerial images, the proposed method obtained the result that the foggy weather led to the worst quality.

Abstract:Image quality assessment is of fundamental importance for various image processing applications. A novel method is presented in which the joint occurrences of statistical local representation by log-Gabor filters and texture analysis by local tetra patterns and histograms of colour are considered as quality-aware features. Then the dissimilarities of these features between the distorted and reference images are quantified and mapped into quality score prediction by utilising a support vector regression. Extensive experiments on LIVE, CSIQ and TID databases show that the proposed method is remarkably consistent with human perception and outperforms many state-of-the-art methods, and also it is robust across different distortion types and different databases.
Image Quality Assessment Based on Three Features Fusion in Three Fusion Steps

Abstract:The objective image quality assessment (IQA) method was developed to replace subjective observer image quality evaluations in various applications. A reliable full reference color IQA method that allows reference and distorted images to be compared in a symmetric way is designed via three fusion steps described in this article. The three fusion steps include luminance channels fusion, similarity maps fusion, and features fusion. A fusion weight coefficient is designed to fuse the luminance channels of input images as an enhancement operator for features. The extracted SR (spectral residual), gradient, and chrominance features, by means of symmetric calculations for the reference and distorted images, are conducted via similarity fusion processing. Then, based on the human visual system (HVS) characteristics of achromatic and chromatic information receiving, a features fusion map represents the weighted sum of three similarity fusion maps. Finally, a deviation pooling strategy is utilized to export the quality score after features fusion. The novel method is called the features fusion similarity index (FFS). Various experiments are carried out based on statistical evaluation criteria to optimize the parameters of FFS, after which the proposed method of FFS is compared with other state-of-the-art IQA methods using large-scale benchmark single distortion databases. The results show that FFS performs with higher consistency with respect to subjective scores in terms of prediction accuracy, e.g., the PLCC can achieve at least 0.9116 accuracy and at most 0.9774 accuracy for four databases. In addition, the average running time of FFS is 0.0657 s-a value representing a higher computational efficiency.

Abstract:According to the different smoothness characteristics of compressed images blocks,a blind compressed image quality assessment method is proposed.The system of compression degree and quality assessment is constructed through the ratio of zero one-dimension AC coefficients,which can effectively identify the degrees of compression.Experiments show that the proposed method has a good performance for compressed images,and has a better performance for the low-pass filtered images than the methods using block edge pixel differences in the simulation.

Abstract:Visual quality evaluation is crucially important for various video and image processing systems. Traditionally, subjective image quality assessment (IQA) given by the judgments of people can be perfectly consistent with human visual system (HVS). However, subjective IQA metrics are cumbersome and easily affected by experimental environment. These problems further limits its applications of evaluating massive pictures. Therefore, objective IQA metrics are desired which can be incorporated into machines and automatically evaluate image quality. Effective objective IQA methods should predict accurate quality in accord with the subjective evaluation. Motivated by observations that HVS is highly adapted to extract irregularity information of textures in a scene, we introduce multifractal formalism into an image quality assessment scheme in this paper. Based on multifractal analysis, statistical complexity features of nature images are extracted robustly. Then a novel framework for image quality assessment is further proposed by quantifying the discrepancies between multifractal spectrums of images. A total of 982 images are used to validate the proposed algorithm, including five type of distortions: JPEG2000 compression, JPEG compression, white noise, Gaussian blur, and Fast Fading. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed metric is highly effective for evaluating perceived image quality and it outperforms many state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of image storage and transmission systems, in which image compression plays an important role. Generally speaking, image compression algorithms are developed to ensure good visual quality at limited bit rates. However, due to the different compression optimization methods, the compressed images may have different levels of quality, which needs to be evaluated quantificationally. Nowadays, the mainstream full-reference (FR) metrics are effective to predict the quality of compressed images at coarse-grained levels (the bit rates differences of compressed images are obvious), however, they may perform poorly for fine-grained compressed images whose bit rates differences are quite subtle. Therefore, to better improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) and provide useful guidance for compression algorithms, we propose a full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) method for compressed images of fine-grained levels. Specifically, the reference images and compressed images are first converted to Y C b C r color space. The gradient features are extracted from regions that are sensitive to compression artifacts. Then we employ the Log-Gabor transformation to further analyze the texture difference. Finally, the obtained features are fused into a quality score. The proposed method is validated on the fine-grained compression image quality assessment (FGIQA) database, which is especially constructed for assessing the quality of compressed images with close bit rates. The experimental results show that our metric outperforms mainstream FR-IQA metrics on the FGIQA database. We also test our method on other commonly used compression IQA databases and the results show that our method obtains competitive performance on the coarse-grained compression IQA databases as well.
