Abstract:A mathematical model is presented to describe steady-state mass transfer and oxidation processes in coal at low temperatures in a fixed-bed flow reactor. The model incorporates the effects of partial pressure of oxygen, temperature and coal particle size, and accounts for the rate of coal oxidation and the composition of oxygenated products at high pressures. This is an important development since previous models did not include the effect of pressure in their formulation. It is found that, when the partial pressure of oxygen increases the rate of oxygen consumption increases accordingly. However, the influence of partial pressure of oxygen on the rate of oxidation is less pronounced when the pressure surpasses 1MPa. In addition the model predicts that, for a constant partial pressure of oxygen, higher rates of oxygen consumption occur at lower total pressures. The same trends are also found for the concentration of oxygenated products at the reactor outlet. It is suggested that, the variation of partial pressure of oxygen leads to different concentration levels of oxygen at the surface and within the pores of coal particles, substantially affecting the rate of oxidation.

Abstract:Oxy-fuel combustion is one of the most promising technologies to isolate efficiently and economically CO2 emissions in coal combustion for the ready carbon sequestration. The high proportions of both H2O and CO2 in the furnace have complex impacts on flame characteristics (ignition, burnout, and heat transfer), pollutant emissions (NOx, SOx, and particulate matter), and operational concerns (ash deposition, fouling/slagging). In contrast to the existing literature, this review focuses on fundamental studies on both diagnostics and modelling aspects of bench- or lab-scale oxy-fuel combustion and, particularly, gives attention to the correlations among combustion characteristics, pollutant formation, and operational ash concerns. First, the influences of temperature and species concentrations (e.g., O2, H2O) on coal ignition, volatile combustion and char burning processes, for air- and oxy-firing, are comparatively evaluated and modelled, on the basis of data from optically-accessible set-ups including flat-flame burner, drop-tube furnace, and down-fired furnace. Then, the correlations of combustion-generated particulate/NOx emissions with changes of combustion characteristics in both air and oxy-fuel firing modes are summarized. Additionally, ash deposition propensity, as well as its relation to the formation of fine particulates (i.e. PM0.2, PM1 and PM10), for both modes are overviewed. Finally, future research topics are discussed. Fundamental oxy-fuel combustion research may provide an ideal alternative for validating CFD simulations toward industrial applications.

Abstract:Low-temperature oxidation of an Australian coal is examined in an isothermal flow reactor operated at atmospheric pressure and 50 degrees C. Strong dependence of the rates of consumption of oxygen and the formation of carbon dioxide are observed on coal particle size and oxygen concentration in the gas stream. Following an induction period, oxygen consumption proceeds at a quasi steady state rate indicating that this process is limited by oxygen diffusion in the pores of coal particles. The rate of carbon dioxide production decreases with time, due to the progressive reduction in the number of active sites at the internal surfaces of pores in coal particles. This points to the kinetic control of CO2 production. The apparent reaction order for oxygen consumption at quasi steady state varies between 0.63 for large and 0.41 for small particles, with the latter number providing the best estimate of the intrinsic order. Fitting the rate of CO2 production to the expression developed by Kam et al. for higher temperatures suggests that, under the present experimental conditions, CO2 is formed via parallel pathways of (i) direct oxidation of coal to CO2 and (ii) formation and subsequent decomposition of solid coal-oxygen complexes, with carbon dioxide produced mainly via the first pathway at long times. The results presented in this paper have applications to self-heating and spontaneous combustion of coal.

Abstract:Coal is a crucial energy source globally, but it poses environmental challenges due to high temperatures and harmful missions during combustion. This study investigates bituminous coal's oxidation combustion in low-oxygen environments using thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry tests. We explore the thermal behavior and kinetic properties of three coal samples during combustion. Our findings reveal that, as oxygen concentration decreases, the combined combustion index of the coal samples also decreases during the oxygen-absorption stage. Additionally, the apparent activation energy of coal increases with its conversion rate (temperature). We observe a shift in the reaction mechanism from three-dimensional dissipation mode to two-dimensional as the oxygen concentration decreases. Notably, the activation energy initially rises and then decreases with increasing conversion (temperature) during the pyrolysis combustion stage, with a shortened phase of increased activation energy at lower oxygen concentrations. Furthermore, the kinetic mechanism transitions from stochastic nucleation and growth to one-dimensional phase-boundary mode with decreasing oxygen concentration. These insights enhance our understanding of coal oxidation combustion in low-oxygen environments, contributing to strategies for mitigating coal spontaneous combustion.

Abstract:Oxidation of a bituminous coal has been studied using an isothermal flow reactor operated at temperatures between 60 and 90 degreesC, and packed with coal particles smaller than 853 mum in diameter. The time-dependent rates of production Of CO2 and CO during experiments were obtained simultaneously from the measurement Of CO2 and CO concentration at the reactor's exit, just after the onset of oxidation of the coal, using a dual-column micro gas chromatograph. The ratio of the rates of production Of CO2 and CO was high at the beginning of an experiment, but decreased to reach a steady state after 10 hours or so. Experimental data indicated that this ratio, at steady state, depends on temperature, and is independent of the size of coal particles and oxygen concentration in the oxidizing medium. The latter discovery has led to formulation of a new mechanism for low-temperature oxidation of coal, which is consistent with the existing spectroscopic data. It is proposed that carbon oxides are produced via the direct burnoff reaction and the decomposition of stable oxygenated complexes, such as carboxyl and carbonyl species. The decomposition of the initial chemisorption intermediates liberates carbon dioxide. For the First time, the paper reports an estimate of the activation energy for the direct burnoff reaction, Which ranges between 62.3 and 70.1 kJ/mol for the present coal. The proposed mechanism in Conjunction with the activation energy for the direct burnoff reaction could be used for predicting the emission of CO2 and CO from low-temperature oxidation of coal in practical applications.

Abstract:Coal fires are very typical hazards caused most significantly by uncontrolled spontaneous combustion processes in coal mines, seams, and the like. By thermogravimetry (TG) experiments, evolution behaviors and properties of thermal oxidation processes at low temperature of a bituminous coal with five microscale particle sizes (L1 215.20 μm; L2 151.90 μm; L3 80.22 μm; L4 43.71 μm; and L5 19.21 μm) were investigated. A two-step reaction model was developed by using Coats–Redfern method and pyrolysis kinetics parameters were calculated. Results show that in stage 1 (65.0–160.0°C) segments of water evaporation and gas desorption dominate, while in stage 2 (160.0–320.0°C) segments of generation of coal–oxygen complex and structure oxidation contribute most. Five macro-characteristic temperatures (critical temperature T1, xerochasy temperature T2, activity temperature T3, mass peak temperature T4, and ignition temperature T5) move to the low temperature direction with decreasing particle sizes except T4. Reaction processes during coal–oxygen interactions are proposed. Activation energies decrease as particle sizes reduce during both stage 1 (15.01–32.47 kJ·mol−1) and stage 2 (64.29–96.34 kJ·mol−1) since specific surface areas are augmented and more active groups are exposed. This work is expected to better monitoring of temperature thresholds for coal spontaneous combustion processes.

Abstract:Oxygen chemisorption on the surface of coal plays a key role in the low-temperature oxidation of coal. Due to the complex molecular structure of coal, it is difficult to fully analyse and characterize coal-oxygen chemisorption, so its mechanism remains unclear. Based on the simple coal molecule active groups, the reaction pathway, electron transfer and heat of adsorption of oxygen adsorbed by each active group in the coal molecule were calculated by density functional theory (DFT). The characteristics of chemisorption and its relationship to the molecular coal structure at different temperatures were studied experimentally. The results showed that carbon radicals (·C radicals) were the oxygen chemisorption sites, and the activation energy of free hydroxyl radicals for hydrogen extraction to produce ·C radicals was 0.1–5.02 kJ/mol, that of methyl radicals was 18.43–26.32 kJ/mol, and that of oxygen radicals was as high as 107.56–132.17 kJ/mol. The free radicals in coal play a major role in the production of chemisorption sites at room temperature. Oxygen was chemically adsorbed on the coal surface in the form of peroxide radicals (COO·), binding to the ·C radicals with a binding energy of −0.2935 eV. Then, the chemical reaction generated gas, free radicals and new ·C radicals. The coal-oxygen chemisorption reaction sequence of different temperature stages was constructed to determine the key reaction of chemisorption. This study could improve the understanding of coal oxidation at low temperatures and guide the prevention of spontaneous coal combustion.

Abstract:To investigate the reaction pathways of key reactive groups in coal when coal undergoes oxidation at low temperatures, the start-up stage of the reaction pathways, and the evolution of free radicals and functional groups. Firstly, according to the similarity in the types of groups, this paper classifies many reactive groups in coal and uses GaussView 6.0 to construct molecular models of primary (-CH3, –OH, –CHO, –COOH) and secondary (-R∙, –C(O)∙, –COO∙, ∙OOH) groups. Then the reaction channels of primary and secondary groups were built and verified based on the similarity of the reaction forms of the groups. The results show that both primary and secondary groups have "dual channel reactions" when coal undergoes oxidation. Channel A of the primary group reacts with O2 with a start-up stage of 70∼200 °C, and channel B reacts with ∙OH with a start-up stage of 30∼70 °C; channel C of the secondary group reacts with O2 at about 30 °C and channel D reacts with self-decomposition with a start-up stage of 70∼200 °C. The results show that oxygen insulation and cooling can be adopted according to channels A and C. Channels B, C, and D eliminate R∙ and ∙OH to efficiently prevent and control coal spontaneous combustion(CSC).

Abstract:This paper reports results from an experimental study on low-temperature oxidation of a bituminous coal in an isothermal flow reactor. The rates of consumption of oxygen and the formation of carbon oxides were quantified by an on-line oxygen analyzer and a dual-column micro GC. Water produced during oxidation was measured using a drierite absorber. This allowed detailed calculations of mass balance during the oxidation experiments. It is observed that the rates of oxygen consumption and the formation of carbon oxides decreased with time, as opposed to the mass of coal sample, which tended to increase during the experiments. The integral amounts of gaseous products evolved in each experiment indicate that CO2 production is far larger than that of CO and the molar ratio among H2O, CO2, and CO production is about 21:3;1 at the present experimental conditions. It is proposed that the molar ratio of produced CO to consumed O-2 be applied as an index for ranking coal propensity to self-heating and for determining the; onset of spontaneous combustion.

Abstract:The rate of oxygen consumption and the release of CO2 were studied using a low-temperature oxidation simulation system. Six model compounds with different functional groups and pore structures were used in the experiment. The results showed that the oxygen consumption rate of six model compounds was mainly controlled by pore diffusion; the release of CO2 for the carbon nanotube (CNT) model compounds CNTs-Mac and CNTs-Mes was controlled by chemical adsorption of oxygen-containing functional groups, while the CNTs-Mic compounds was by diffusion resistance in channels. The carboxyl group, where CO2 adsorbed, was the main adsorption site; this had a higher oxygen consumption rate than the hydroxyl group. Two different methods were employed in further studies to explore the relationship between CO2 and oxygen-containing functional groups: a quantum chemical simulation for basic structural units of lignite, and measuring the activation energy of two types of lignite pre-treated by different CO2 concentrations. Experimental results revealed that the OH bond of the carboxyl was longer than that of the hydroxyl, and the negative surface potential of the carboxyl was stronger than that of the hydroxyl. The non-covalent bond between the reactive group and coal macromolecule could be weakened due to the presence of CO2. Finally, there was a synergistic effect between 30% CO2 and active functional groups to promote low-temperature oxidation of lignite.

Abstract:To explore the mechanism of low-temperature oxidation of residual coal at different depths in goaf, the oxygen concentration of airflow was dynamically adjusted to simulate the natural oxidation of coal at different depths in goaf with the aid of a self-built simulation experiment system of low-temperature coal oxidation. Based on electron spin resonance (ESR), analyses were made on the variation of free radicals during coal oxidation at low temperatures in different concentrations (volume fraction) of O2. Besides, an industrial analyzer and a gas chromatograph were also applied to the determination of the change of volatile matter and the emission of gaseous products. The results show that line height, the free radical concentration, volatile matter, and CO concentration change in stages with the increase of oxidation temperature. At about 130 °C, they shift from slow-varying to rapid-changing, reflecting that the coal steps out of a slow oxidation stage and enters a rapid one. The variation trend of line height and free radical concentration is basically the same, and g values are always in the range of 2.00141–2.002034, with little change. As O2 concentration rises, the tendency of each parameter with the oxidation temperature remains unchanged, but the overall variation gradually increases. When O2 concentration is lower than or equal to 9%, free radicals undergo reaction at a low speed and CO generation delays in the low-temperature stage. When it is higher than 9%, there is a growing possibility of coal-oxygen reaction. The increase in temperature improves the excitation of free radical reaction, so that CO concentration rises exponentially. Since different O2 concentrations have varying effects on coal oxidation, it is of great importance to adopt prediction and prevention technology in different-depth areas of goaf to ensure the safe mining of coal seam.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is widely used in the prevention and control of spontaneous coal combustion. In this manuscript, three low-rank coals with different metamorphic degrees were selected as the research objects. The temperature-programmed experiments, in situ infrared cooling experiments, simulation of the competitive adsorption of CO2 and oxygen (O2) in coal pores, and simulation study of the CO2 inhibition of the coal oxygen composite reaction were used to obtain the role and effect of CO2 in preventing oxygen adsorption in coal at the low-temperature oxidation stage. It was concluded that CO2 can displace the O2 near the pore wall to physically prevent the adsorption of O2. Through the changing law of heating rate and a kinetics analysis, it was found that CO2 can increase its activation energy by 5.3–108.3% during the slow heating stage of coal and reduce its heat rate. At around 120 °C, coal loses the protective effect of CO2. From the changes in functional groups, it can be seen that when coal was cooled in the CO2 atmosphere, mainly pyrolysis and condensation reactions occurred due to the lack of O2. In addition, CO2 can also inhibit the chain reaction of the chemical adsorption of oxygen in coal. This work provides a theoretical basis for CO2 prevention and the control of spontaneous coal combustion.

Abstract:The study of coal oxidation and weight gain at low temperatures is helpful in understanding the spontaneous combustion of coal and its mechanisms. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the low-temperature oxidation properties and the oxygen adsorption weight gain kinetics of Chinese Shenhua subbituminous coal (SH). Using thermogravimetric experiments with various particle sizes, heating rates, and coal ranks, the oxygen adsorption mass gain stages of coal oxidation at low temperatures were investigated. According to the results of these experiments, as the particle size of SH coal decreased, the dry cracking temperature (T1) decreased, the ignition temperature (T2) changed slightly, the weight gain increased, and the spontaneous combustion tendency increased. The three-dimensional diffusion model (Zhuralev-Lesokin-Tempelman) (D5) is suitable for SH coal samples with different particle sizes. A higher heating rate is not conducive to the formation of carbon-oxygen complexes. The D5 model can also be used to fit the kinetics of the SH coal samples at 5 K/min, 10 K/min, and 30 K/min. Unlike the SH coal samples, the Shengli lignite (SL) and Tavan Tolgoi anthracite (TT) samples fit the three-dimensional diffusion model (Jander) (D3). Based on the fitting results of the Achar differential method and the Coats-Redfern integral method, the activation energy E of the low-temperature oxidation weight gain of the coal samples decreases with decreasing coal particle size and with increasing oxidation rate and coal rank.

Abstract:To understand the oxidation reaction of coal and predict and control generation and development of coal fires, a one-step global dynamic model of the chemical reaction between coal and oxygen considering multi-material actions was established. A volume-averaged oxygen consumption rate (OCR) to evaluate the characteristics of the oxidation reaction of coal was proposed. The results demonstrate that, in the reaction between coal and oxygen, the dominant effects of temperature and oxygen concentration on the reaction rate of coal oxidation also change. There is a certain time-lag between changes of the temperature during coal oxidation and combustion and the reaction rate: the changes of temperature parameters fail to reflect the instantaneous reaction rate in real time. By changing the volume fraction of oxygen and the programmed heating rate, it is found that increasing the volume fraction of oxygen and the heating rate both can promote the reaction between coal and oxygen and reduce the hysteretic effects of heating in the reaction under external heating. Therefore, controlling the temperature storage conditions is beneficial to preventing the oxidation reaction of coal in its early stage, while changing the oxygen supply conditions can control the development of coal spontaneous combustion in its later stage.

Abstract:In-depth and comprehensive analysis of reaction sites evolution has important enlightening significance for understanding the chemical reaction sequence during low-temperature oxidation. For this purpose, FT-IR, XPS and 13C NMR were combined to analyze the changes in reaction sites. As the oxidation temperature increased, the CH3/CH2 ratio continuously increases, indicating that methylene has a higher reactivity. Before the oxidation temperature reached 150 °C, the relative content of C-H decreased slightly while that of C-O increased. Then, the C-O gradually transformed into C=O. When the oxidation temperature exceeds 150 °C, the ratio of aliphatic carbon has been significantly reduced and that of aromatic carbon is greatly increased. The ratio of carbonyl carbon also has a small increase. Based on these results, representative macromolecular models are established and electrostatic potential analysis is performed. The results show that the main active site is the hydroxyl, methyl and methylene groups, especially the hydroxyl in the carboxyl group. In summary, it can be considered that the main active sites for coal oxidation at low temperature are hydroxyl and methylene groups. At higher temperatures, the hydroxyl group will be further oxidized and the main active site will gradually evolve into carboxyl groups.

Abstract:In this study, industrial analysis, 13 C NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and in-situ infrared spectroscopy were employed to determine the elemental composition and structure of Tingnan coal. The peak area, pore volume, and specific surface area were used as the main parameters to investigate the structural changes of coal molecules and pore evolution during low-temperature coal oxidation , using an automated surface area and pore size analyzer. The analysis revealed that with increasing oxidation degree, the CH groups in the aromatic structure gradually decreased, while the total content of oxygen-containing functional groups such as alcohols, phenols, carboxyls, and carbonyls remained relatively constant. However, the relative content of hydroxyl groups and ether linkages increased with increasing oxidation temperature. Additionally, coals with different oxidation degrees exhibited well-developed micropores, and the specific surface area gradually decreased while the pore size increased with temperature. Molecular models of Tingnan coal in its original state and oxidized at temperatures of 50 °C, 70 °C, and 110 °C were constructed using Materials Studio software. Based on these models, pores with diameters of 2.79 nm, 3.07 nm, 3.07 nm, and 3.11 nm and a length of 4.5 nm were constructed using the coal molecular structure as the pore walls.

Abstract:Precursors of carbon oxides in coals are considered to be related to aldehyde group(–CHO) and carboxyl group (–COOH), but the way of decomposition of precursors to produce carbon oxides is not clear. Through theoretical analysis, experimental research and quantum chemical calculation at molecular scale, this paper explores the decomposition mode and products of carbon oxide precursors during coal spontaneous combustion (CSC). A programmed heating device was used to investigate the change rule of gas product concentration during the constant temperature oxidation of coals, and the microstructure of the coals was characterized by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption experiments (BET), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The results of the study show that during coal oxidation, the inhomogeneous energy exchange between the coals and the external heat source results in the change of gas product concentration with time following two rules. BET experiments reveal that oxidation leads to the evolution of fine mesopores to macropores and an increase in the number of pores with diameters larger than 20 nm in the coals, which facilitates the transport of oxygen molecules through the pore structure. Within 200 °C, the microcrystalline structure of coals is basically unchanged, and the active structure C–C/C–H on the side chain is converted to –CHO and –COOH and then decomposed to produce carbon oxides. Quantum chemical calculation shows that the reaction energy barrier of carbonyl group and carboxyl group decomposed step by step to form carbon oxides is much smaller than that of direct decomposition, and carbon oxides and alkyl radicals can be produced even at room temperature by step decomposition. The research results provide theoretical guidance for the formation mechanism of carbon oxides during low temperature oxidation of coals.

Abstract:Accurate assessment of coal char oxidation kinetics is essential for the design of efficient combustion systems; nonetheless currently, there is little research on this aspect under moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution (MILD) oxy-fuel (MO) conditions. In this study, experimental and modeling studies were conducted for analyzing the intrinsic kinetic properties of coal char oxidation under MILD air-combustion (MA) and MO conditions based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The experimental conditions were improved to minimize various diffusion resistances in the crucible during the TGA experiments. Under the optimal conditions of TGA experiments, the reactivity differences of coal char under the MA and MO atmospheres were small. Both nonlinear model-fitting and linear model-free analysis methods were used to analyze kinetic parameters of coal char oxidation. The results showed that the random pore model correlated the best with the experimental results. The activation energies of coal char under the optimal conditions in MA and MO atmospheres (i.e., 104.4 kJ/mol and 98.2 kJ/mol, respectively) were much higher than those obtained by the conventional method. The reaction orders of coal char oxidation in MA and MO atmospheres were close to 1.0, and the specific values were affected by the diffusion effect and background atmosphere.

Abstract:Coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) is a complex physicochemical dynamic evolutionary process. Oxygen consumption rate is commonly used to estimate the intensity of coal-oxygen reactions, but is easily disturbed due to derivation from the volumetric flow rate. To address this issue, a new estimation parameter, called the oxidation reaction constant, was proposed, and modeled using mass flow rate. Its correctness was verified through experiments on the oxidation of coal samples in two inert gas environments (i.e., N2–O2 and CO2–O2), respectively. The ability of N2 or CO2 to inhibit the CSC was also quantitatively evaluated using the oxidation reaction constant. The results show that the oxidation reaction constant is related to the coal's own properties and temperature, but almost independent of the oxygen concentration, which is more appropriate for estimating the oxidation properties of coal. The oxidation reaction constants in CO2–O2 environments are only 40%–85% of those in N2–O2 environments, indicating that CO2 has a stronger inhibitory effect. Furthermore, the stronger the physical adsorption properties of the coal sample to oxygen, the larger its oxidation reaction constant, and the more likely it is to spontaneously combust. This work provides more reasonable characterization parameters for investigating the low-temperature oxidation process of coal.
